Microsoft Couldn’t Make Uncharted for Xbox, So They Stole Tomb Raider Instead

CraveOnline: "We’ve reached a point now where exclusivity deals are so transparently anti-consumer that Xbox boss Phil Spencer isn’t even trying to hide it any more. While there are still some in the gaming community who fervently and foolishly keep waving their flags of support for their favorite hardware manufacturer, his latest comment regarding Xbox’s recent purchasing of Rise of the Tomb Raider as a “timed exclusive” should have even Microsoft’s most ardent of supporters putting their Xbox banners back in their closet."

Stole... but will soon be found. there are so many games coming out that i cant wait a few months for SE to release this on the ps4. i never got the original until it came free to psplus.

LAWSON723529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

It will take more than a few months. While they are under a partnership a PS4 version will not be in the works until the deal is over.

SilentNegotiator3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

These "exclusive" deals are always about launch dates and not mentioning another version coming for X months. I doubt they're not at all working on a PC/Ps4 version in that (likely 12 months - it's always a year) time between versions.

Unless they *specifically* said otherwise for this situation, and I just missed it.

SCW19823529d ago

Are you really that gullible?

nypifisel3529d ago

Pff, those are all being made simultaneously, XBO version got precedent though.

jimjam34423529d ago

id be pretty surprised if it was a whole year, id bet 3-6 months exclusivity tops.

sonarus3529d ago

LMAO @ lawson. Stop falling for pr bs.

hakeem09963529d ago

Didn't uncharted steal from Tomb raider and Indiana Jones?

cleft53529d ago

The problem with what Microsoft did is that they didn't steal Tomb Raider from the PS4 they just made it a timed exclusive. Which is pointless because ultimately a better version of the game will release on the PS4/PC.

If this was a fully exclusive game than yes Microsoft would have done something good for their consumers. Instead, they just paid a ton of money to delay the game on the PS4/PC because they couldn't compete against them directly. The biggest problem is that all of the money they spent on this would have been better spent on a new IP that was completely exclusive to Microsoft. That would have been better value for their consumers.

Oh and you better believe Square Enix will release a better version of the game and try to charge Xbox One consumers $60 for that updated version as well as PS4/PC consumers. This is why people are upset and calling Microsoft out on their anticonsumer bs.

mikeslemonade3529d ago

Naughty Dog is currently the best video game developer in the gaming industry. They have been since 2009. Nobody is replicating or surpassing them right now.

mixolydian_id3529d ago

Doubt it.

PS4 will get TR and the launch quality will be on par with the XB1.

It'll actually works in PS favour.
If the exclusivity deal prevents a PS release for a year... then that means there will be one less year between the RotTR and their next release.

It's a clever move by MS... not because of what everyone else is saying. More along the lines that they'll be effectively teaching SE how to release their future content on the console.

SE are a valuable asset, they need to get as many people on board and familiarised as possible.

darthv723528d ago

You know...SE could have said no thank you. It wasnt like MS was playing the role of the godfather "I'm gonna make you an offer you cant refuse..."

I wouldn't use stole. More like they borrowed it. However, to me uncharted still remains far and above better than anything tomb raider has put out even including the new tomb raider. Uncharted 4 might not be as good as the first 3 but even the very best tomb raider game still doesn't touch Uncharted 1-3 for me. New tomb raider was a nice step but it certainly wasn't a game i wanted to run and tell all my friends about how awesome it was. Uncharted and last of us on the other hand...

Yaay4me3529d ago

@Mikelarry
true. and its not like TR is even close to Uncharted.

sonarus3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

lol i don't understand how one can disagree that tomb raider is not better than uncharted. I mean i know everyone is entitled to their own opinion and stuff but playing both games i would like to see someone objectively argue this with concrete arguments like uncharted is too slow or the story in tomb raider is better e.t.c.
I am a big uncharted fan from my point of view it isnt even close

Blaze9293529d ago

"Microsoft Couldn’t Make Uncharted for Xbox, So They Stole Tomb Raider Instead"

they make that sound like a bad thing. Glo up

BiggerBoss3529d ago

How is it a good thing exactly? It doesn't make the game better for Xbox gamers, it just excludes PC and Playstation gamers from being able to play it.

Zombro3529d ago

Good uncharted is garbage

3-4-53529d ago

IF they PAID for it, HOW is that stealing ?

Blaze9293529d ago

N4G logic for you bruh. Everyday my IQ drops trying to understand what's going on here.

Mikelarry3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

The article implies this title was stolen not me, if you got a problem with that I suggest you take it up with the author

@ blaze its not a n4g user who wrote the article so your point is moot. Like I said to 3-4-5 you might want to take your grievances about how the title is worded with the author of the article

TheRedButterfly3529d ago

@Blaze929

My brother refers to this site as "the cancer."

He isn't wrong.

700p3529d ago

Exactly. Idk why people are crying about it. Buy a xbox one if you really want it.

DragonKnight3529d ago

Why are people who b*tch so much about this site still commenting here? If this site is "the cancer" and is infected with IQ dropping logic, WHY ARE YOU HERE?! Are you some kind of sadomasochistic people that you would willingly subject yourselves to these things, or is it the more likely explanation that you're full of it and just whining that your opinion isn't shared by most people and that that bothers you?

You can steal in more ways than taking something you didn't pay for. Your narrow definition of theft doesn't mean that theft didn't occur.

IrishSt0ner3528d ago

@DragonKnight - Man you come up as the top 2 search results for "is N4G biased?".

Thing is there's a lot more PS users this gen, so objectively it's going to be biased that direction, that's okay.

Problem is the X1 section is full of negative stories and comments, it's the worst place on the web for Xbox news. Any day I can point to the top story for proof of this.. today it's "Cancelling EA Access already", when the VAST mojority of Xbox Owners like the service or giving it some time to see.

That's where you counter-argument falls short, you claim "opinion isn't shared by most people", that basically means PS only fans come in and overwhlem the X1 section so that the X1 owners are in the minority. That's exactly why this site has that reputation.

On Topic - Case and point.

There's no confirmation of a PS4 release. This could be just like Ryse and DR3. Timed exclusive to Xbox then released on PC but never on PS4.

Phil Spencer practically said as much here "Clearly, I'm not going to invest in something to make games great on other platforms. Windows stuff I will. But not on stuff on other consoles. That's 101." ( http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

And Shuhei Yoshida said regarding a PS4 release "That question has to be asked to Square Enix and Microsoft. I hope the game will come out eventually on PS4. But how can I tell? Other than that cryptic message by Phil Spencer." ( http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

I wouldn't be surprised if Phil Spencer was desperate enough to pay whatever it took to keep TR off PS4.

Microsoft could have developed their own action/adventure game, but building a network of programmers and graphic artists would be too much like work.

iamnsuperman3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

Microsoft has always relied quite heavily on external studios. It is in the core of their business model. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I think Microsoft wanted a temp solution to the Uncharted problem (they could have even been spooked by the teaser since the Tomb Raider deals isn't that old). They need to stop thinking short term and start thinking long term. If they want an Uncharted type game they should build one (though they need to distance themselves away from Uncharted as you don't want a prototype or a Dante Inferno type situation). It will cost in the short term but the possible long term benefits out way a short term deal

harrisk9543529d ago

Bad business model, honestly.

Golden_Mud3529d ago

The only way to distance their game (if there is one) is if they develop more of a hardcore puzzle based adventure well written story game

xx4xx3529d ago

You act as though Microsoft is a sh*t company.

They posted record profits: $24B last year. They PROFITED $24B last year. Apparently they are doing something right. All this while Sony closes studios.

They clearly have the money to throw around. This money for Tomb Raider isn't even a pimple for Microsoft.

It damages Sony far more than it does Microsoft. I'm sure the Sony fans will claim it doesn't...but first it's Tomb Raider, than another game...and another game after that.

If you don't think this is just the start, you are sorely mistaken. I fully expect Microsoft's agressiveness to continue. They have significantly deeper pockets than Sony.

DragonKnight3529d ago

"They posted record profits: $24B last year. They PROFITED $24B last year. Apparently they are doing something right. All this while Sony closes studios."

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

What do you think made them $24B? I can guaran-damn-tee it wasn't the Xbox Division.

DoubleM703529d ago

I've been trying to say this for the past 2 weeks. Sony ate Sega they beat down Nintendo. Now a bigger fish is in the pond. Don't get made Sony fans I just seen this happen the last 30yrs or so. Back than Nintendo ate up Atari and took a bite out of colecovision and intellivision.

WorldGamer3529d ago

Good points made in this article. At the end of the day, MS is behind Sony in hardware sales and Uncharted 4 is looming as one of the biggest "Next-Gen" titles. As a business move, I would say this isn't a bad one for MS, but over the long term, I don't believe a timed exclusive of Tomb Raider will stem the tide in MS favour.

Now for Square-Enix, I don't know if this was a great move for them. The longer they take to release this game on the PS4, the closer Uncharted 4 is to release. I loved the first Tomb Raider, but Uncharted was in and is in another class IMHO. I, for one would wait for the inevitable "Game of the Year" or "Definitieve Edition" of Tomb Raider, particularly after the timed exclusivity. I don't see the loss of this game as a huge impediment to my gaming on the PS4 over the long term.

It will be interesting to see how this all develops. Maybe Square-Enix is right, but I really don't think it was a wise move on their part.

TheRedButterfly3529d ago

Halo 5 would like to remind you that it exists.

WorldGamer3529d ago

Yea, because Uncharted 4 and Halo 5 are more similar than Uncharted 4 and the new Tomb Raider.

I really don't understand where your comment fits in or what your comment is in reference to.

GarrusVakarian3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

A band-aid solution to Xbox's answer to Uncharted.

A band aid that will be peeled off and most likely later be used by Sony, anyway.

I agree with others, MS should take the time to form a team to create their own, exclusive, answer to Uncharted.

-Foxtrot3529d ago

A band aid you'll finally find as it will stick to your foot when you get into the shower.

Sony "Oh...I think I'll keep that"

@Lukas_Japonicus
"I agree with others, MS should take the time to form a team to create their own, exclusive, answer to Uncharted."

I could have sworn I read somewhere that Spencer stated that they have tried to create their own adventure ip. What they came up with wasn't good enough, so they did the next best thing for their platform. Quote below..Notice he states that WE'VE STARTED SOME.

"I'm a big fan of Uncharted, and I wish we had an action adventure game of that ilk. We've started some, and we've looked at them. But we don't have one today of that quality." -P3
Source: http://www.ign.com/articles...

With that being said, MS has tried. Yet n4g has to spin everything MS does into a negative. The way I see it is people have a few choices. Either buy an Xbox one to play Tomb Raider sequel, or wait till it eventually releases for the console of your choice. I'm just over the damn complaining and criticizing of every single thing MS does.

GarrusVakarian3529d ago

Cool, I didn't know they already tried. Thanks for linking that.

xx4xx3529d ago

Reddit XBOX One....a much more civil alternative.

LeCreuset3529d ago

Tried? How hard? As in they had this unique action adventure game coming out, but then had to drop Kinnect support and canceled it? I don't know. Phil doesn't really elaborate on that, after throwing it out there. I doubt they tried as hard as the money they spent on GTA IV timed dlc, which was half that game's development cost.

Lawboy23529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

I really hate the internet....and I'm really starting to hate this hobby we call gaming....maybe I'm getting to old but the way ppl act and carry on I'm starting o think that this hobby is better suited for children or it seems like a bunch of immature ppl who act no better than a child over games...get real...someone stole your game by making a business move...smh

As a gamer u should realize that it's not like you can't play the game...if the game is what ur really here for and gaming is what u do to enjoy your time why wouldn't u just buy the console you want to play the game on...instead of blindly following a company or hating the other company that you have no ties to....seriously

It sounds like this....mommy we bought ice cream from this shop and they brought ice cream from that shop and they got sprinkles on there ice cream which isn't fair...we should have got sprinkles as well...but atleast in this scenario the kid doesn't have a choice they have to get ice cream where there parents tell them to get ice cream from

BiggerBoss3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

So to play one $60 game, a person should throw down up to $500 to get another console this early in the generation? Before EITHER console has boatloads of games to justify it? I'm not hating on Xbox here, but that's just not good money management. If someone wanted to play tomb raider, AND halo, AND gears, AND quantum break, then your argument would make more sense. But for a single game? Ehh...

user3672723529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

So just wait out a bit and it hope it will come to your system of choice. I know for a fact I'll be getting the PS4 for myself once Uncharted 4 hits. I am not buying it for one game as it is an investment to play future games that will be available in the coming years. Right now there is no PS exclusive I want from the PS4 except Uncharted. That is the ignition point to buy the system for me as I'll know more games I'll want will follow soon.

Who knows..maybe people that love Tomb Raider will buy the xb1 and get to enjoy Halo, Gears and Crackdown down the road as well. You don't buy a console for a single game, but you got to start somewhere.

Lawboy23529d ago

Not my arguement at all...I'm generally talking about the pettiness and immaturity of a lot of gamers....these are multi billion dollar companies they are doing what they think is best for there company nothing more nothing less....I just feel that articles like this are ridiculous....someone stole your game....really...if it was stolen you would have already owned it not waiting for it....further more it's not like you can't buy it....as a consumer you have a choice...and ppl on the internet act as if Microsoft has put a gun to their head....it's ridiculous....and childish....if you are 12-15 I understand your frustration u don't really know how the world works but if you re over the age of 21 you should atleast have an understanding of how the world works....these are multi billion dollar companies not your friends and they all will do things to piss you off....but to carry on as a child would do...which is to call names or whine or make constant articles about how the big bad company made a business call is ridiculous

No one forced you to buy the ps4 and no one forced you not to buy an xbox one...that was a choice.....so don't shout and scream now because if it was the other way around no one would have a problem

HanzoHattori3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

Guess what. Before Microsoft got into gaming Sega, Nintendo, and Sony weren't buying exclusives and excluding gamers, THEY DEVELOPED THEIR OWN! Sega had Sonic, Nintendo has Mario Brothers, and Sony now has several games associated with it's brand. And none of them were ever THIRD PARTY, multi-platform games. Microsoft enters the market and brings their anti-consumer business practices with them. Phil Spencer came off as a gamer at first, but now he has revealed himself to be nothing more than another branch of Microsoft's tree of schemes and attempts to monopolize everything and anything that deals with software. The problem isn't gamers, the problem is people like Phil Spencer. He thinks all gamers are stupid. Some are, but Phil Spencer is going to find out that most hardcore gamers, like myself, know more about the Xbox One than the con men selling it to retailers.

LAWSON723529d ago

That's funny not one was third party was ever associated with a brand? Isn't this a Tomb raider article? Well guess what Tomb Raider was never first party let alone even second and a lot of people are going on about how it is an iconic name on PS.

qwerty6763529d ago

"Sega, Nintendo, and Sony weren't buying exclusives and excluding gamers, THEY DEVELOPED THEIR OWN!"

hey man if you're trying to make a point at least dont spout lies.

HanzoHattori3529d ago

Sony never bought Tomb Raider or paid anyone to bring it exclusively to any Sony console. The point being made here is that these types of backroom deals are turning gaming into something that it never was before Microsoft entered the mix. And if you pay attention to the nonsense that Xbox/Microsoft Executives spew forth about it's intentions for gaming you'll see exactly why they tried to do what they did at E3 2013. Unfortunately for Microsoft, they are up against the entertainment behemoth, Sony. I'm sure you and others still believe Sony is going broke while the Xbox brand is slowly being edged out of gaming. Pay attention, or you'll miss it when it happens.

AngelicIceDiamond3529d ago

I knew it was only a matter of time until Phil Spencer was gonna be public enemy no. 1 amongst certain angry gamers.

Oh well can't satisfy everyone I suppose.

Manic20143529d ago

You're just like the "immature" gamers you proclaim. Inconsistency and hypocrisy all in one.

immoracle3529d ago

Eh. It's all supply and demand. In this case, gaming demand is vocal (thanks to Mr. Internet). And it's allowed to sound immature, it's still a consumer. I was born in 83' and I never remember a time prior to today in which we can not only influence game development, but also aid in production (ie. kickstarter).

I actually get a kick over fan boy wars. Brings me back to Sega/Nintendo, when 9 year old kids argued about 16 bit, without even knowing what it meant.

Microsoft has definitely changed gaming business ethics though. The consumer (end user) should never be aware of the business side of things. Just price tag.

Sayai jin3529d ago

I know how you feel, but the people making most of the noise are fan boys and they are a minority. Most of the gamers, fall into gamers that have a preference of game types or consoles, some prefer multiple consoles, etc...they may really support one company, but don't feel the need to bash other peoples preferences.

MrDead3529d ago

@Lawboy2

To stick with your ice cream analogy what MS did in this situation was to take the ice cream that was available to everyone and buy it all, only handing it out to people who will pay the ransom fee for the chocolate sprinkle goodness.

If MS had funded the game from the start to be exclusive to their system then there would be no issue. What they did was to pay lots of money for a multi-plat title to be removed (for an unknown duration) from other systems.

It’s not just MS that are guilty, we see more and more multi-plat games being chopped up into pieces that can only be played if you buy it on this system or from that shop. It is a crap practice that has to stop as us gamers are the ones missing out and I love my ice cream too much for some fat cat to dictate on who is and who isn’t allowed to have some.

DigitalRaptor3529d ago (Edited 3529d ago )

I think it's about time a company with all the billions of dollars as has Microsoft, should decide to commit to this industry.

They've piggybacked off third parties for every generation they've been in this industry. Both Sony and Nintendo have committed and yet, Microsoft seems content sitting on the fence, having people do their errands for them. You only need to admit that Microsoft has a selfish and non-committed approach the this industry, and that is likely why they will never win a generation or have the stronger gaming brand.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

gamerant.com
isarai460d ago (Edited 460d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness458d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch458d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730458d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior458d ago (Edited 458d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot460d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto458d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior460d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B459d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws459d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730458d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69458d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.
