Why Are People Criticizing P.T. a.k.a. the Silent Hills Demo?

When I hear that a teaser trailer for a game has been released I find it difficult to stifle a groan. In this day and age, teaser trailers usually consist of a 15-second clip consisting of zero gameplay footage, often complemented by some swanky video footage that will not appear in the finished product. At their best teaser trailers are redundant, and at their worst they’re unrepresentative of the product they’re advertising.

because people needed the diapers changed and also because they didn't read up that the gameplay of the PLAYABLE TEASER will not be indicative of the final project and game

sonarus3531d ago

Well i haven't noticed any complaints myself but then i havent seen the tech demo/ teaser. Primarily because its a tech demo or teaser or wateva and i generally dnt care about tech demos. When it gets boiled down to game format though, i would definitely be more interested afterall it is MR HIDEO KOJIMA - one of the greatest game developers of all time - and also guillermo del toro another visionary on his own. The pairing certainly suggests success, but then again i am not sure how much faith i would put in non metal gear hideo kojima stuff

fr0sty3531d ago

This isn't just a tech demo, you are doing yourself a disservice by ignoring it. It's actually very well put together.

SilentNegotiator3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

...I've overwhelmingly seen more praise than criticism.

nicksetzer13531d ago

I honestly don't think I saw anyone complain. The idea was ingenius and the result was a new silent hill!!!

SilentNegotiator3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

All I've seen in terms of criticism, and only in two or three comments, is the fact that it's so vague and that a lot of it is trial and error. But that is the point (I wouldn't say that there's NO merit to some of those criticism, though).

dumahim3531d ago

Yeah, mostly praise, but there are a lot of people, even those who ultimately like it, that complain about how random it is and people not being able to get the ending to work.

I agree that it was a neat idea, but it was frustrating trying to play it and I find horror stuff incredibly boring, and the trial and error aspect of it didn't help.

fr0sty3531d ago

I actually enjoyed the fact that we gamers had to work together as a community to solve the game, through trial and error, before we finally nailed down the solution. I also like that that solution involved a hardware device, much like Psycho Mantis.

MysticStrummer3531d ago

Yeah I saw no one complain, except when people said the game should stay first person.

DonDon3531d ago

No one complained. This is clickbait article and it's working...

MRMagoo1233531d ago

Yeh I dont recall any bad words about this demo , everyone that has played it or watched it have said its a good thing.

Panthers3530d ago

@dumahim

If you find the horror stuff boring, then it just isnt for you. Honestly this demo was the scariest thing I have ever played, or watched. The sense of helplessness in it is just awesome, and a lot of that had to do with the randomness of the final loop. You are never in control in this demo, the game is. Thats one of the many mind games this game pulls to keep the tension.

Ive played through it twice and I still get chills when I play.

Am_Ryder3531d ago

Yeah. What the hell criticism is this person talking about. I don't think I've read one negative comment about the game- not counting people saying it's too far away from Silent Hill stylistically. Which isn't entirely valid due to the "it's not Silent Hill" disclaimer the developers put on it.

UnwanteDreams3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

l'll admit I was critical until I realised this wasnt a gameplay demo. Knowing the full story I think PT was a great idea. I'm just gun shy been burned by too many bad games calling themselves Silent Hill.

DarkOcelet3531d ago

People that are criticizing it are probably the ones who didnt get to play it .

HanzoHattori3531d ago

I agree...

Envy, nothing more, nothing less.

GW2123531d ago

I played it and I'm criticizing it... mainly because I had to buy a new pair of pants after I was done playing ;)

Kojima, I expect a check in the mail for a new pair of pants. Ya bastard.

(Seriously though, I thought it was really cool... and clearly scary as sh*t)

MRMagoo1233531d ago

stupidly scary imo lol I played a bit but i had to keep the lights on and I was on the edge the whole time never knowing when something was gonna jump out, hideo can make anyone feel anything he wants at the drop of a hat.

kryteris3531d ago

because the game is disturbing, and a part of their psyche needs payback.

TransientDreamer3531d ago

Because everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

You could use that on literally every article on the internet...but then again, what is the fun in that when we can add to the discussion?

20 Awesome Canceled Games You'll Never Get To Play

You can understand some games getting canceled, but these awesome looking games still baffle us to this very day.

"Tommy saving the planet from an army of aliens after they abducted him and his entire bar, with the game ending on the promise that Tommy would be back, but that promise was never fulfilled"

The thing is with the original Prey 2 that Tommy wasn't even the main character, they replaced him with some generic looking space bounty hunter. It was a refreshing change to see an awesome Native American character with ancestral like powers fight aliens yet they ditched him. It was only after an outcry they showed much later in a new preview that Tommy was in the game as an NPC.

I'd have prefered a real sequel with Tommy as the main character, literally picking right up from the originals ending.

As for Eight Days...Sony really needs to pick this up

If Amy Hennig was still at ND, I'd have loved to see her tackle it after what she did with Uncharted.

isarai42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

I thought that was awesome too, and honestly i wish people werent so damn critical about cultural variety in games. I feel like people try to ruin devs lives if even one detail is off about their culture in a game and so everyone is too scared to try anymore

isarai42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

One of the lead engine programmers for Prey 2 at Human Head was my programming instructor when i was taking game design. This game was in limbo at the time and we asked once and only once about this game, the misery in his eyes when he told us "this is the 1st and only time ill ask you to never ask me about that game" was something ill never forget😅 he used a couple assets through the curriculum for teaching purposes but nothing very tangible. Just a function here, a 3d prop there. Such a shame. Years later i saw him at a magic tournament, we caught up and he still thinks about that game and how it's "practically done" probably sitting on a drive somewhere

shinoff218341d ago (Edited 41d ago )

Practically done? Jeez that fking blows because that looked much more interesting then what bethsada made. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the one bethsada made.

Lmno looked interesting.
I'd knock titanfall and fez off the list. Add something else. Scarface 2 man only if would've been awesome. Prey 2 should be higher to. Either way not a bad list. Out of 20 there's only 2 I'd hate on.

isarai41d ago

That gen got a lot of games canned right before the finish line. Cipher Complex, Battlefront 3, legacy of kain dead sun just to name a few

XiNatsuDragnel41d ago

Games that need to come out: Battlefront 3, 8 days, and timesplitter 4.

Skuletor40d ago

One that's not on the list is Killing Day, I remember seeing the trailer in 2005 and being impressed at the time. Being Ubisoft you know it would have been a AAAA game too, lol
2 Days to Vegas and The Getaway 3 are two other games that seemed promising but never came out.

Canceled Video Game Sequels That Never Happened

Anticipation can turn into disappointment so often in the video game world. Canceled video game sequels can feel devastating, especially those that promise to expand upon the thrilling stories of their predecessor. Wealth of Geeks runs down some of the most disappointing cancelations that kept anticipated sequels in the dark.

The orginal prey 2 better be on this list.

And it is. Man if could've got this instead. Wonder why no one's step up to do this kinda game yet. I think there's one in development for pc, it's cyberpunk Era but it takes place in some huge apartment complex I think. Anyway I'm saying this not knocking the prey that came out cause I did enjoy that to but really wanted prey 2 (canceled)

Skuletor64d ago

I wonder if they never happened because they were cancelled 🤔 (stupid headline)

Was just thinking the same thing...

I mostly disagree with Downpour's position. Yeah, the game is not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but is much better than the HD Collection and Homecoming. The main issue is the performance, but that was mitigated by the patches, especially on the PS3. Personally, I put it a little behind Origins and The Room.

Having Restless Dreams as a different entry from Silent Hill 2 is also a choice.

bfrye26175d ago

Normally, we would not consider it a different game (Restless Dreams), but since it had a very different critical reception and had new content, it was allowed. As for Downpour, I would agree, but since that one is subjective, we let him make his case for the placement.

gold_drake175d ago

silent hill 2 is definitely the best one out of those.

for me personally, the whole ritual/cult stuff was always so weird to me in all the other games.

CrimsonWing69175d ago

No disrespect but I put SH2 over 1. 1 is fantastic, but 2 took it all up a level.

bfrye26174d ago

We agree, that is why the writer put it in top place!
