Rise of the Tomb Raider - Update

As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I’d like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we’re creating at the studio.

Wow that is huge... i guess all the more reason to get an xbox one

Ballsack3538d ago

Massive announcement well done ms

But please Crystal dynamics don't take gamers for idiots... The reason it's exclusive in 2015 is the huge wedge ms gave you

And the wording 2015 ..noone will be surprised when its released on ps4 few months later

iGAM3R-VIII3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Exactly! They said it would be an exclusive IN 2015. So my thoughts is it will come in 2016 early spring or summer.

MS were sneaky with that wording though, it didn`t fool me though.

Xsilver3538d ago

i like how they cut off the fans that bought it on PlayStation damn We Pushing MS to their limits well it's about to go down this generations bring napkins because their's gonna be allot of tears.

GarrusVakarian3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Yeah, I really hate it when devs/publishers talk to us like we were born yesterday. This game isn't exclusive to the X1 because they're "friends with MS", or because "MS believe in your vision", it's exclusive because a large amount of money was handed over to you for it to be so.

And every company does it, and it pisses me off. Why can't they just be honest to the people that they're expecting to buy the game?

PS4 gamers miss out on Tomb Raider, and X1 gamers miss out on No Man' Sky....for what?! It's BS. GAMERS missing out on GAMES because suits can't get enough $. It really grinds my gears.

Team_Litt3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

"lmfaoo..."really? you found that hilarious?
To each his own.
xsilver, the tears seem to be flowing freely already.

They made a deal with MS, get over it folks.

Skips3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

http://i.imgur.com/HrOk6qB....

lol... So true...

Anyways, considering games like Ryse, Plants Vs. Zombies, Dead Rising 3, and Titanfall, I doubt this is permanent.

EDIT: Not to mention the first barely broke even on 3 platforms back in 2013. And this...

http://www.videogamer.com/p...

SuperBlur3538d ago

last i remember , they barely broke even(not sure if they actually did) with the last Tomb Raider , it would make sense to partner up with either MS or Sony to gain back some loss by signing some exclusivity deal .

Ballsack3538d ago

Holiday 2015 carefully worded by ms and crystal dynamics

Few months later ps4 and PC

Buy will ps4 and PC gamers cop it few months later thats the question

This was a stupid move by CD not only because they complained about sales of the last tomb raider but now its up against uncharted in not only sales but review scores

JeffGUNZ3538d ago

Eh, I think he means just this installment coming out in 2015. He is also taking the opportunity to tell you when it's released. Who knows if it is timed, but the wording of 100% exclusive is what makes me think this game won't see PS4 for a while.

extermin8or3538d ago

Well this decision is pretty stupid really based on the way market share is getting if it does release on ps4 in 2016 (what about pc?) then I won't be buying it full price although I'm sure I will live-uncharted will in all likelyhood be a better game.

UltraNova3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

So that's where that 400 million went...paying Square Enix...

haha I'm kidding ladies!

Great move from MS, they finally realized they had nothing against Sony's Uncharted and decided to buy TR to put against UC4 next holiday 2015.

Good for XB1 owners, bad for everyone else its a good franchise!

bouzebbal3538d ago

it's exclusive like Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Mass Effect, BioShock, Tomb Raider Underworld, Fallout 3, Star Ocean...

We all know what happened later on... they aren't thinking that it will suffer against Uncharted 4. definitely a bad move due to the release window they have chosen. TR will flop due to U4 coming out at the same time, and i cannot imagine how many people haven't bought PS4 yet just for U4.

sonarus3538d ago

great move by microsoft. These are the types of moves microsoft needs to make. Spend that money microsoft. show us how deep your pockets are.

GTgamer3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

So crystal Dynamics basically just said screw all PS/PC fans that bought the first Tomb Raider damn bruh these Devs ain't Loyal.

Edit: Good Move by MS Reallly Bad Move by Square Enix because if they thought the first tomb Raider sales were disappointing then gonna be really dissapointed smh.

Infamous2983538d ago Show
slasaru013538d ago

Who cares? In 2016 another exclusive will come

Anarki3538d ago

Yeah, Square Enix, who is in huge financial stress will not isolate the biggest next gen market like this, especially seeing as how PS4 has almost sold DOUBLE the amount of XBOne. Give it a few months after it will be on PS4, with out a doubt...or even PC too.

Sevir3538d ago

Money Talks... Even though the game sold more on PS3 and PS4, MS money hatted the hell out f that game. Rise of The Tomb Raider is gonna be awesome. But I can wait till Spring or Fall 2016 for it! :) Congrats though XBO fans This game is one stellar game to have in your fall 2015 lineup.

Mega243538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

I'm not buying it even if it releases for PS4 and PC, Square enix has lost my respect, just like ea.

I've played the entire series, since I was a kid, it was my favorite game. Guess this is goodbye Lara, cus I don't have the money to shell out for a new console.

RosweeSon3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

I hope and pray but it seems logical that they would see the sales gaps in the two consoles already surely they won't ignore 10 million gamers already likely to be 15 million plus by the time game comes out, was an amazing game and big news that it's exclusive but time is key and I'm sure it's not until the end of time, all big games jump ship, Resident Evil 4 was a GameCube exclusive apparently haha.

CYCLEGAMER3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

I mean what do you guys expect them to say....TOMB RAIDER is exclusive because MS gave us x amount of dollars??? When has any company ever done that in the history of gaming????

Why would they say that? Is anyone questioning why Destiny has exclusive content on the ps4? No because we all already know why. It would be silly and VERY unprofessional for them to mention $. #dealwithit

VforVideogames3538d ago

I guess Uncharted is in trouble.

DiRtY3538d ago

MS securing Tomb Raider = moneyhatting, MS IS EVIL!

Nintendo securing Bayonetta = SEGA YOU EVIL *peeeep*

Sony securing Bloodborne = well done Sony!

...just another day on N4G

lazyboyblue3538d ago

@dirty but bloodborne is new ip. Tomb raider is something playstation fans are invested in as a series. Its dead rising 3 all over again.

osamaq3538d ago

I think they said in the trailer "exclusive to xbox" and not xbox one

xbox= xbone and x360

so its cross generation game meh...

DragonKnight3538d ago

@MELMAN26: "I mean what do you guys expect them to say....TOMB RAIDER is exclusive because MS gave us x amount of dollars??? When has any company ever done that in the history of gaming????"

YES! WE DO WANT THEM TO SAY THAT! For goodness sake that is a better answer than this patronizing, bold faced lying, P.R. B.S. these companies spew every time they make dumbass decisions like this.

This is by far the stupidest thing they could do for the franchise. Removing a userbase of 10 million (PS4), and another userbase of many millions more (PC) in favor of a userbase of 5 million makes NO MATHEMATICAL SENSE AT ALL! It doesn't even make BUSINESS sense.

We're not stupid, we know why they did it, this PR response just proves what we all say, that PR responses just irritate us.

5eriously3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

"This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4."

aLiEnViSiToR3538d ago

Yeah and PC version will be called something like Ryse of the Tomb Raider xD

Personally i think this is a middle finger to all Tomb Raider gamers all over the world !

dmeador3538d ago

@Everyone

Yeah! Every game should be on every system ever! Goodness people put down the pitch forks

GiantEnemyCrab3538d ago

We know it's temp exclusive. That seems to be the way they roll with third parties. I really don't get this deal or really think it's going to benefit the console much.

gootimes3538d ago

I prefer the older tomb raiders more, they went with trying to copy Uncharted in gameplay. I just want tomb raider to be tomb raider, and uncharted be uncharted.

RebelWAC3538d ago

I agree but Am I the only or doesn't this feel like a "fuck you Sony for selling off our shares and leaving us to rot" move?

Samsara823538d ago

Heard through a friend that they were looking for a partner to fund the studio(and an exclusivity was the way to get the most money quickly) since eidos is not doing too good financially apparently, first game did not reach their sales objective... If that's the true reason, I personally wish they were more straightforward with why they sided with one company instead of saying how great a partner they are...unfortunatly in the end gamers get penalized if they do not own an xbox console.

4Sh0w3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Yeah there's a difference between sony paying for Bloodborne and micro paying for TR. TR is a old franchise that ps fans supported, Bloodborne is a new IP.

From a gamer perspective I think ps fans should get the game but if I work at microsoft I'm only interested in securing any and every opportunity to make the X1 platform more attractive to existing and future X1 owners, that's micros dog in the fight, not ps fans feelings.

gfk3423538d ago

You're right.

Everyone should chill out. Until fall of 2015 there is plenty of time for clarifications regarding this subject.

Also do not forget that Uncharted 4 will be released until then.

If MS really secured this title, then MS played a lot of money and with that they might have used all their bullets.

Darrius Cole3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

@DragonKnight

You don't know whether it makes sense for Crystal Dynamics unless you have seen the check from Microsoft.

And I am willing to bet that it was a MIGHTY check.

It's probably going to kill the franchise for the PS4/Xbone generation. But they won't have to sell as many units if they check was big enough.

Like always it probably was a waste on money on Microsoft's part. They probably could have financed 2 or 3 games for the amount they have to pay to make TR an exclusive.

PONTIAC08G8GT3538d ago

What's the big deal? This isn't COD, BF, Madden, or any other major cross platform game. For a long time Tomb Raider games were not very good. It's just another exclusive, no big deal. If both the PS4 and X1 had the same exact games, where would the fun in that be? Maybe I am the minority but I like that I can play Halo, Gears, TF1, and Forza on Xbox only. That's one of reason I bought the new Xbox was I prefer the games released on that system. PS is getting exclusive Destiny content, doesn't bother me one bit. Both systems need to make themselves appeal to the audience and games and content are one way.

marcofdeath3538d ago

Power and you don't have to downgrade, no party...

maddskull3538d ago

even though they are trying to take on naughty dog they wont succeed but we will see i guess that uncharted will blow tomb raider. i don't think tomb raider has any chance in facing uncharted now especially that it went exclusive.

Prime1573538d ago

I don't know, I understand taking an exclusive to multiplatform in a sequel(especially with third party studios) like mass effect.

I don't understand taking something that was multiplatform on it's first iteration and making it's sequel exclusive.

That is the difference in this scenario. If MS SOLELY funded the game like Nintendo to bayonetta2 then fine, but I hardly suspect that to be the case.

DragonKnight3538d ago

@Darrius Cole: Oh really?

5 million x $60 = $300,000,000 potentially. (XB1)

10 million x $60 = $600,000,000 potentially. (PS4)

And let's not even pretend we know how much it could make on PC.

So Microsoft would have to have given Square Enix $600,000,001 for it to make sense. There's absolutely no reason for this at all. It doesn't make sense on a business standard for anyone but Microsoft, and it sure as hell doesn't make mathematical sense at all.

GameNameFame3538d ago

Do x1 fanboys really believe that this is an exclusive?

Lets be honest here. Look at MS's history from 10 year span.

soooo many timed exclusives.

morganfell3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

The truly insulting thing is entire affair isn't the game exclusivity. It truly isn't. It is Crystal Dynamnics saying the best thing for the game is to put it on the lower end machine with a more difficult development suite. It's just insulting to expect us to swallow such tripe. I could actually respect them if they said, "We did it for the money." At least that is honest. But this is laughable.

Then they talk about MS believing in Tombraider since 2011. Did they forget Sony since 1996? They thank the community for their support and then cut off the largest part of the community. That is thanks? What does payback get you? It is idiotic that a company thinks gamers are such idiots to believe anything that was in that desperate respoinse posted on tumblr today.

kingfetish173538d ago

I think just the initial release of the game is exclusive to XB1. The inevitable Definitive or GOTY Editions packed with DLC will release on the PS4 too.

chaosx3538d ago

Wow listen to all this rubbish about loyalty and fans support. It was different story with Destiny on this site a few weeks ago. Lets be clear tombraider has xbox fans also , and they deserve to play the game just as much as anyone else.

The studio needed cash to finish the game , and also they would be going up against Uncharted next year. This is a intelligent business decision. Get funded ,release game on system get money, use money to work towards release on future platforms and release when it will work best.

MS gave them money so you at least get a chance to play another Tombraider. Its your choice not play it on an xb1. Be grateful, they might have just saved the IP.

Sorry Sony didn't pony up with the dollars , but they have their own horse in the race and i sure as sh#t guarantee they will be putting all their marketing behind Uncharted not Tombraider..

Given the choice of buying Uncharted 4 or Tombraider if they came out at the same time. Which would sell better on a PS4???

Just saying.

BattleAxe3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

I'm not very happy about this, as I was looking forward to a PC release for this game. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is absolutely not what I was looking forward to.

I love the Tomb Raider series, but there's no way I'm buying an Xbox One to play it. I should also add that this is not a healthy thing to do for a series that is still in the process of refreshing itself. It clearly needs the support of all platforms to hit the kinds of sales numbers it needs to grow the fanbase. Short term gain for long term obscurity.

BVFTW3538d ago

Wow guys none is betraying anybody, this is as old as gaming, there is no reason to be so upset, a little disappointed? sure! I was one of many gamers planning to buy the game on a different platform than the XBone but I'm not gonna pick a "bone" XD with square-enix or CD for this decision because they can publish their game wherever and whenever they want, it's their game after all. Every platform has its exclusives and many franchises change platforms from time to time, every big game company is guilty of locking a third party game on its platform by an exclusive deal and it is not the bane of gaming. From a business POV it was a good move Microsoft but from a consumer POV I guess I'll play the wait game on this one for a while (see if it's released on PC or PS4 in some time), Xbone still needs more games and a better price to seal the deal for me but I recognise they are playing hardball again, more competition means more and better games so bring it on!

morganfell3538d ago

So chaosx you can't see the difference between timed DLC for a new IP versus removing multiplatform for an entire game that has been on the Sony brand since 1996 and whose recent outing sold over double on the PS4. Not much sense in discussing things with you if you cannot ss the disparity between those two situations.

mkis0073538d ago

In case anyone is interested GI wrote this in an article today, which pretty means the game is not a lifetime exclusive. They could be toying with us though.

"Right now, Microsoft isn't confirming lifetime exclusivity (we used Titanfall as a comparison when inquiring), but lining up even the crucial holiday 2015 release window for a coveted third-party exclusive could be a big win."

http://www.gameinformer.com...

Ares84HU3537d ago

This is has got to be the biggest lie I've ever seen. They think we are total idiots. If it comes to PS4, I will only buy it for $39.99 now. Not a penny more.

Mr-Dude3537d ago

When it will release on PS4, I will buy it used. After alienating half your fanbase, they don't deserve my money.

That said, I get it that it is a competing businesses, but making multiplatform titles exclusives isn't the way. Goes for Sony also (looking at No Man's Sky and Silent Hills)
Sony makes their one games, they have many studios. But making TR a exlc is just a big FU to many fans... That's my piece of mind.

Buy it used after it's released on the PS4 and PC some day... And stop all these articles about it

Neonridr3538d ago

then don't play it, or wait and see if it releases on the PS4 later. But don't whine about it. This is business to these guys. MS and Sony want to win at whatever costs.

Malphite3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

I agree. MS should start investing in 1st party imo. Look at their "exclusives":

Dead Rising, Ryse, Plants vs. Zombies, Titanfall: 3rd Party (not exclusive or timed exclusive)

That's why I highly doubt that Tomb Raider will stay exclusive forever.

Team_Litt3538d ago Show
MysticStrummer3538d ago

It's not something I'd buy a console for, but I'm sure many people will. I still need to finish the last TR but I lost interest so it may never happen.

JeffGUNZ3538d ago

@Malphite

Exactly. People have said this about Titanfall, Dead Rising, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, and now Tomb Raider. You add those up and I think you have good grounds to own an Xbox One along with PS4/Wii U, whichever console you have now. What makes me feel good is that Xbox has turned the ship and put their main focus on gaming, where it should have always been.

Spotie3538d ago

Doesn't it make sense that him saying "one" means it's the only game that interests him? Am I the only one who got that?

lemoncake3538d ago

No more horrible than the ps4 deals like no mans sky, but I guess that deals ok because it's Sony and not Microsoft, fanboy logic.

whoyouwit043538d ago Show
turdburgler10803538d ago

It's amazing to see so many people so upset. Ps4 has tons of great games coming out. So you lost a legacy game. Big deal. You got tons of great games like bloodborne and the order. If it hurts you so much just buy an Xbox one and then you will have two out of three consoles and the flames of fanboyism will subside within you. You will rise above the petty squabbling and become a true gamer. Then once you get a wii U your days of worrying and hissy fits will be over.

starchild3538d ago

I completely agree. Microsoft can go to hell. I was considering getting an XB1 down the line and I've always been respectful of the XB1 and Wii U even though they were consoles I didn't own, but this move has really turned me away from the console.

If Microsoft thinks buying exclusivity to games in well established franchises is a good idea they've got another thing coming. This is only going to build ill will against them.

PONTIAC08G8GT3538d ago

^^^

Sounds like someone needs a timeout.

Get over it. It's just another game that became an exclusive. Tomb Raider was hardly Uncharted, Killzone, LBP, so it's not like Sony lost a major game. And if you want to cry and pound your fists because MS secured an exclusive, go right ahead. It's called business. And to read all the comments of all these die hard, hard core Sony lovers trash MS because they can't have Tomb Raider is laughable.

Revolver_X_3537d ago

Its unfortunate that some cant see this as a stupid move(Xbox fans, I assume). Every Sony comparison thus far is comical. Going as far as comparing timed DLC to this. It is what it is. I was actually disappointed in the decision, but understood its about money. This BS response from CD is enough. I suggest ppl speak with their wallets. If it is timed, dont buy it or buy used. As far as xbox fans go, congratulations on another exclusive you wont support.

colonel1793538d ago

Like they are going to say: Don't worry, it will be announced for PS4 eventually, so just wait for it.

Of course they are going to say it's exclusive as it's been just announced as exclusive. Also, if it's indeed exclusive, when they see the sales, they will bring it to PS4 immediately.

lelo3538d ago

Square Enix did say that Tomb Raider wasn't very successfully. Maybe Microsoft paid for game development like Nintendo did with Bayonetta 2.

solidjun53538d ago

I would agree with you, but I thought Bayonetta 2 wasn't going to happen but for Nintendo saving it. This is different because even Square - going downhill for a while - said the IP wasn't successful, it was, and there was a likely possibility of the game coming to the PS4 and Xbox One (PC as well) before this became an Xbox One exclusive. Bayonetta 2 wasn't assured.

Anyway, good move by MS. While I think it's going to move units, I don't think it will move it like the Halo Collection. What's crazy is that the previous iteration sold more on PS4. So this is coming out from left field.

Tomb raider has been a multiplat game for a long time. I see this as a big middle finger to all the fans that own a PS4 or a PC.

Toon_Link3538d ago

No the real middle finger is the definitive edition that just came out on ps4. Oh well guess I'm not playing the next tomb raider.

Snookies123538d ago

I agree... This is a big slap in the face to Tomb Raider fans. I wouldn't have an issue if the first one had been exclusive as well, since this series is a reboot. However, making the first one multi-plat then having the sequel exclusive to one console is just messed up. Especially to those looking forward to it who were PC or PS gamers.

How much would Microsoft have to pay Crystal Dynamics to not include the 10million ps4 gamers, as well as PC gamers? That's a great business deal for Microsoft though. Gotta give it to em. My guess is it will make its way to PC and ps4 in spring 2016

styferion3538d ago

It's not really a great business deal. This is like "forcing" the fans to buy XB1, not making them "want" to buy XB1.
It's a different case if say, MS stated that it's a co-developed project like Bloodborne is. But what this is, is MS paid them a hella lot of cash to make it exclusive, and that's certainly not a move people can appreciate. Also this is a well-known multiplatform franchise, not a new IP like Bungie or Insomniac did, people will know that this is going exclusive because of money.

Well maybe it'll move the XB1 console sales a bit, but in turn they'll get a lot of hate, even from neutral post. Hardly many people will appreciate such underhanded move.

rainslacker3538d ago

It's more than that. MS would have to cover the loss of PS4 and PC. Also PS3, as it was cross gen. Probably about 5 million copies, minimum given the sales of the first game in the reboot. Multiply that by about $25, which is what SE would get after all the costs and stuff and you get $100 million dollars. The cost of a full AAA game.

I'm sure it wasn't quite that much of course, and there may be something shady going on where it will release later to get the money of all those fans they're shafting now, but I can guarantee that it was no small sum. A main title TR game that sold well on the last title would not come cheap.

mochachino3538d ago

Any person supporting this is not thinking it through.

Paying big money for 3rd party exclusives just means that MS won't pay big money for a new 1st/2nd party exclusive.

3rd party exclusives are a lose lose. They create NOTHING. Instead of MS fans having TR and some other game, they only have TR....which they would have had already.

Smart for MS maybe, but bad for the consumer whether xbox owner or PS4 owner - each have one less game. Just like paywalls, and DRM, etc. was good for MS but bad for gamers.

The fact that people are so desperate for xone to bounce back that they support this is shocking.

Jughead34163538d ago

Any way you slice it, it's still a good business move for Microsoft. Sucks for us gamers that don't have an xbox. But that's the point. If you want to play the most ambitious tomb raider ever, buy an xbox. CD just pissed off millions, but I'm sure they're still counting their money. Goes to show, that these companies don't give two shits about us. Its all about money. That's why it's pointless to be fanboys

Seafort3538d ago

I think this is going to have the reverse effect that MS and SE wants.

SE may be kicking themselves come launch of the game if Xbone sales haven't improved much by then. Just like EA and Crytek with Titanfall and Ryse.

Either way big mistake by SE and a good one by MS but will make them even more hated if that's possible.

And do they think PS and PC gamers will buy their other Tomb Raider game (TR and the temple of osiris)?

Not a chance after this sell out announcement :)

Huge mistake by crystal dynamics I don't care how much money MS is giving them. Not only are they alienating a huge fan base but they are tarnishing their reputation. "We can be bought and we don't really care who else buys our product". Getting sick and tired of money grubbing people/companies. Where's the dignity gone, the appreciation? How many people pc (me), xbox, ps4 bought the last tomb raider and this is how we get repaid. Discusting. And no, this will not make me buy an xbox as I am quite hapy with the pc. I have lots of games to play it's just the priciple of this I don't appreciate.

I know many xbox fans will gloat but look at the bigger picture and perhaps you will see the damage things like this cause. Now I'm all for exclusives I just don't like the under handedness of situations like this.

rainslacker3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Yeah, get an X1.

Read the comment section of that blog. See how just getting an X1 is not the answer to what has happened here.

CD and SE just pissed off a huge fan base. Not just PS fans, which has the biggest TR fan base, but also PC fans.

As of this writing, 850 comments on that blog. All but one person, an xbox troll laughing at the situation, are all saying how they screwed up, and how pissed off they are.

In this case, I can't say I disagree. I supported TR on the PS3, then brought the remaster on the PS4 because I wanted to support the series as I thought it was good enough, and I know SE was unhappy with the sales. And now we can get a crappy spin off game?

The part where they say they have great content for the fans on other systems reeks as much as MS saying "We have a product for those people, it's called the 360".

Edit:
I rarely get mad at these or other types of gaming announcements, but this whole thing is just wrong. I don't know if I'm madder at MS or SE/CD for accepting this deal. MS because they could have made a whole other game with the money they would have had to dish out, or SE/CD for alienating what is a huge fan base on other platforms. It's one thing when it's a sub par spin off game, but quite another when it's a major entry into the franchise.

I'm not even a huge fan of the series, but really liked the last game.

Jughead34163538d ago

Well said. I see more angry fans, than happy xbox gamers.

Omnisonne3538d ago

''The part where they say they have great content for the fans on other systems reeks as much as MS saying "We have a product for those people, it's called the 360".''

Thats exactly what I was thinking lol
They just trying to justify their greed for MS's money.

Hopefully for them it will help developing the series, but their reputation took a big hit

LeCreuset3538d ago

"Wow that is huge... i guess all the more reason to get an xbox one"

Not really. They're just trying to cash in while ducking releasing on PS at the same time as Uncharted.

If they want to make money they'll wait until the Uncharted coast is clear, then come grovelling back to PS fans with Rise of the Tomb Raider: MacGruber Edition. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

ramiuk13538d ago

well MS must of paid crazy money because the sales figures alone show ps4 as selling more.

MeLoveRamen3538d ago

I you actually think about it, it really isn't that surprising if it comes to xbox first in 2015 and then ps4 in 2016 because its direct competition Uncharted 4 is releasing the same time in 2015, but i will be surprise if it stays on xbox for its lifetime.

timed exclusive,,just wait a year and get it on ps4 with all dlc and better looking/playing.... this isn't gta or a new experience, its just plain old tomb raider

starchild3538d ago

This is bullshit. Really shitty move by Microsoft.

I don't care if you work together with a studio to make a new IP, although I would prefer if you just make more internal studios and produce exclusives from there, but buying exclusivity to a franchise that has long been enjoyed by people on many different platforms is a disgusting business practice.

masterfox3538d ago Show
gman_moose3538d ago

Why would this make me want to get an Xbox one? Why support a company who would rather spend money to keep games away from gamers, than invest the money in new development? No one benefits from this decision.

-Existing XBO owners would have had the game anyway, so this means nothing to any of them.
-PS4 and PC owners get screwed over.
-S-E and Crystal Dynamics lose a ton of sales- way more than MS could have paid for.
-And lastly, MS loses money because no one in their right mind will purchase an Xbox one to play this game. I know they are getting desperate, but this was the wrong gamble. All it does is show everyone how desperate they are, not to mention make everyone hate them.

GDDR6_20143538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Megaton by MS . Want to play it? Get an xbox one

GordonKnight3538d ago

Microsoft could add salt the wound by having it as Gaming with Gold game when the PS4 version is released. I'm not into the Fanboy wars, but do that would make dirtier. I could just see all the PS4 fans first we had to wait for the game and now X1 fans get it for free. N4G servers would crash!

Wii U>PS4>X1

TheLog3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Did you read the article? The Devs themselves say its exclusive to Xbox.

goodfellas273538d ago

Geoff Keighley:
Spoke to many people here at Xbox press conference on Tomb Raider. Official line is that the game is "exclusive on Xbox FOR holiday 2015."

https://twitter.com/geoffke...

mike_honcho3538d ago

nothing against the tomb raider series.. I've always been a fan.. but personally I'd take bloodborne over tomb raider any day of the week.. so all the more reason to get a ps4..

YoungPlex3538d ago

Na, as much as I like Tomb Raider we PS4 owners will be getting two lifetime exclusives, Bloodborne and Uncharted which will be both as good if not better than Tomb Raider IMO. There are several other exclusives coming to the PS4 as well but these two are the exclusives I'm really looking forward to. I am however disappointed that it won't be coming to the PS4 but it was a smart move on MS part.

so uncharted vs tomb raider in fall 2015 lol

not really they only have sunset overdrive and Tomb Raider. so its not really worth buying yet. 2 games for a $400 consoles isn't worth buying in my opinion.

lmfao the number one thing ps fans are talking about from games com is ms exclusive tomb raider. nice job ms.

... until it comes out on PC.

Volkama3538d ago

... I hope. The PC version of the last game was very well done.

DonMingos3538d ago

Well, in 2015 PS4 will have the game Tomb Raider is aiming to be, Uncharted 4, so I'm ok with that

Gardenia3538d ago

It says; 'exclusive holiday 2015'. So it probably will be on all platforms in 2016

starchild3538d ago

Hopefully. But, damn, this was one of my most anticipated games for my PC next year.

Kavorklestein3538d ago

What I find crazy is how Upset people are about this. I firmly believe that Square Enix and Microsoft had some giant deal worked out, I'm not denying that, but I fail to see why people who are getting so upset about it. Especially if we factor in that many who are upset secretly think it it is going to be a timed exclusive, or that it will come to PC in a similar fashion to Ryse and Dead Rising 3.

Put your money where your mouth is guys. One moment people are saying "There's no Reason to own an xbox one" (even though there is plenty of exclusives and reasons to pick one up) OR- "All the good exclusives are going to come to PC anyway" and the next, they are complaining that there is NOW suddenly yet another reason to pick up an xbox one, but those same people are just proving that they never intended to get one whether or not it has good exclusives.

If you guys are really so sure about the assumptions you've made about ONLY needing a PS4, then this is what you get for assuming. It ALSO seems funny that PS4 owners MAGICALLY always have a gaming PC that is leagues more powerful than a PS4 and Xbox one, and say they'll wait for a PC version.

So if you can afford a killer PC, why can't you afford an Xbox one?

You can't have it both ways, guys. You either choose to buy a console for the games and exclusives it offers, or you don't.

With so many people saying the only valuable console is a PS4, then prove it, and stop crying about something you can't control.
It's your turn to man up and sit there quietly and accept the decision you claim to stand by so fervently.

I understand that some people are disappointed by this news, but most (keyword MOST) of the people who are upset by this would be CELEBRATING if it was coming to PS4 exclusively.
Whether or not Tomb Raider:DE sold more on PS4 is irrelevant because Square Enix ultimately has control of what they decide to do... (or what amounts of money they will accept to give Microsoft exclusivity)

The decision has been made.
If you think about it, MGS4 could have EASILY been done on the Xbox 360, just using multiple discs to get it done like countless other games.
So, there goes THAT ^ cop out for why it's okay for Sony, but not Microsoft to do such things.

People have had a split decision scenario when it comes to choosing exclusives or platform for ages now. This situation is NO different.
Besides, this COULD end up being a timed exclusive, so if you folks claim to be okay with waiting in all those other scenarios, why not this one?

DonMingos3537d ago

This is an easy decision.

What console would I rather have, the one with the exclusive Uncharted 4 or the one with the exclusive Tomb Raider spin off?

It looks like an easy decision to me if you're basing it on the exclusivity of an adventure game

Kavorklestein3538d ago

If nothing else, this situation should just be a lesson in making early adopters think twice from now on- at least until they can REALLY have a good idea of what is coming out for each console, respectively.

I owned a PS3 for short amounts of time or borrowed a PS3 from a friend for exclusives whenever the ones "I just HAD TO PLAY" came out. It never upset me when I made my decison for what console I owned.

Everybody needs to take accountability for their knee-jerk assumptions that the Xbox one is a piece of crap/or that it has nothing worth playing.

All consoles are great and have reasons to own them. I have been waiting for the list of reasons to grow for both platforms, and now that I have a good idea of what is coming, and now that there is more than one SKU available, and multiple bundles to choose from, I'm going to get the Call of Duty Advanced Warfare bundle in November.

Similar to how I waited to get an Xbox 360 until the Elite model came out, which saved me from getting RROD, as well as gave me more storage space.

Like I have said so many times on this site, and like I say almost every time video games are in discussion-
Patience is a Virtue.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not calling early adopters FOOLS or something, I'm just saying you pay a premium price, but you also get a whole year's head-start on enjoying the new system/s and so in that sense, I think you guys also get a fair end of the deal.

Let's just accept this, Please? Just like xbox owners have to accept that the PS4 is a bit more powerful, let's just accept it, OR since you guys are "always right" just wait for the PC/PS4 version.

It’ll Be Fine, Right? Five Games With Unfortunate Release Strategies

Mark from WellPlayed writes about five game launches that were impacted by unfortunate scheduling.

Zero Dawn sold really well so I’m not sure this belongs. The second game released next to a big game again and it hurt it some I forget what it was though, oh yeah Elden Ring .
But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

isarai462d ago (Edited 462d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness460d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch460d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730460d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior460d ago (Edited 460d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot462d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto460d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior462d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B460d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws460d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730460d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69460d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

lelo2play841d ago (Edited 841d ago )

You got to be kidding!
The first one was great at the time... but this latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games are also great.

yeah i remember liking the first one when it came out, so i tried the second one sometime after release and i just could not get into it, i couldn't finish it.
