4 Reasons why Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox exclusivity is a good thing

MMGN: Put the pitchforks down and let us explain ourselves: Rise of the Tomb Raider’s Xbox exclusivity is a good thing for the industry, even if it’s a swing-and-miss for those that only have a PS4.

rmw2hot873542d ago

To everyone complaining that its Xbox exclusive, would you all be complaining so vocally if Sony had snagged it? Would you be telling them what a dick move it was to remove a section of the potential audience?

Big_Game_Hunters3542d ago

Are you really going to ask this knowing full well what kind of answers you will get here. Don't waste your time with logic. It's just a good way to lose your bubbles.

uptownsoul3541d ago (Edited 3541d ago )

@rmw2hot87 You make a good point, but I can flip it on you and make an equally good point. What if it were reversed and Sony got this game exclusive…Would Xbox fans not be complaining just as vocally?

WAIT: we don't have to wonder…Here is a link ( http://www.inquisitr.com/13... ) to a bunch of Xbox fans on "Bungie Day" vocally complaining about Playstation having THE BETA for a longer period of time and ANNOUNCED TIMED dlc…Some Xbox fans were saying "this is a big f*** you to xbox one fans" and "I just can’t support sh** like this" and even "Cancel your Xbox Destiny preorder"

(Mind you these people knew they were still getting the full game at the exact same time. Just imagine if Destiny were a full Playstation exclusive)

So lets not act as if it would be all peaceful if the shoe were on the other foot.

user95970823541d ago

it's not the fans complaining that's the problem so much as it's the unprofessionally biased reactions of the authors of these articles.

Mikelarry3542d ago (Edited 3542d ago )

I own both next gen consoles,The only reason this irritates me is because the ps4 is my platform of choice if Sony had done this and Xbox one owners were kicking up a stink I would understand why and support their cause. I don't support any kind of third party exclusive it is the most stupid and utterly pointless approach the industry seems to be giving way to. Yes there are a lot of hypocritical gamers out there who would have had a field day if this was a Sony exclusive but trust me some level headed gamers who believe if I have the money and console multiplatform publishers should not jerk gamers around

Bennibop3542d ago

I also own both consoles and will NOT be purchasing this game. I think these kind of moves hurt gaming, DLC is one thing this is another. Its annoying people keep mentioning No mans sky arrangement with Sony but that is no different to the arrangement between Microsoft and Platinum for Scalebound and you are not hearing anyone complain about that. They are brand new IP's with no established fan base on any console. Microsoft should instead be focusing on establishing a new studio and new IPs.

rainslacker3541d ago

The only time I would support a 3rd party exclusive, outside of the annoying timed deals, is when the developer or publisher made a conscious decision to make it exclusive for some reason. Many japanese games fall into this category. Or when a company foots the entire bill from the beginning for a new(many examples), struggling(Bayonetta), or dead(can't think of one, but sure it exists) franchise.

Tedakin3541d ago

Nope if Sony had snagged it, everyone would being say the same things, just reversed.

lonelyplayer3541d ago

The fans are on playstation. that's why you see a lot of reactions: the majority of the fanbase can't play the game.

Ares84HU3541d ago

Yeah this is pretty much it. Majority of TR fans game on Playstation and that is the reason why you see so many people complain. This fact was also proven when TRDE sold 2x as much on Ps4 than it did on xb1. Can't argue with that fact.

gangsta_red3541d ago

Wrong, the majority of those original fans are on Xbox too. To sit there and pretend that PlayStation has the most Tomb Raider fans is false.

Rachel_Alucard3541d ago

@gangsta_red

Can you provide any evidence to suggest that?

Brix903541d ago

@gangsta_red

How can you deny the main fanbase for TR is on Sony. Lara Croft to me found a stable home on PlayStation. Obviously there are fans on Xbox but it sold twice as much on PlayStation consoles.

MysticStrummer3541d ago

@gangsta_red - Check the reboot sales numbers sir.

gangsta_red3540d ago

@YTP

Can you provide any? Funny everyone is quick to believe EVERYTHING for PS but not Xbox.

@Brix
Again, how can you say it isn't? Especially when a lot of PS fans switched over to 360 this past gen. Not to mention any new users who just started gaming for 360 or PC that probably never even played the original Tomb Raider.

Again, where is the evidence that everyone is asking me for but not others?

@Mystic Summer
Sure, and the sales are not some astronomical difference between them so again....why is it that TR has to belong on Sony's PS?

All you guys do is copy and paste each other's responses but no answers.

gangsta_red3541d ago

We all know the answer to that.

N4G would be celebrating claiming that PS4 is selling so well that third party devs are abandoning the Xbox.

or

N4G would be celebrating claiming that devs want to only support the most powerful console in the world.

or

N4G would be celebrating claiming that Tomb Raider ONLY belongs on the PlayStation console and no where else.

No matter what there would be no outrage, anger or the nonsense we are seeing from the many gamers on here and other websites. The main point in my comment is "celebrating" by the way. Even with the recent announcement of Silent Hill we are seeing a lot of sony fan(boys?) hoping it's exclusive.

rainslacker3541d ago

"N4G would be celebrating claiming that PS4 is selling so well that third party devs are abandoning the Xbox. "

There would be some merit to that argument. It happened with the Wii U for example. Hard to argue against the difference in install base, and the difference in sales of the last game between the systems. However, I doubt the exclusive would be announced so early, since there's no telling where X1 will be holiday next year.

"N4G would be celebrating claiming that devs want to only support the most powerful console in the world."

Again, there is some merit to that argument. If the game did something that couldn't be done with lesser hardware, then that would be understandable. I doubt you'd see this argument much outside of the fan boys though, and this game probably isn't much more technically demanding than the definitive edition was.

"N4G would be celebrating claiming that Tomb Raider ONLY belongs on the PlayStation console and no where else."

Again, maybe among the fan boys, but most people that have been around a while have probably played TR on multiple platforms throughout the years. Anyone who made this argument would be laughed at, and facts would be presented to prove that it's just wrong. I would do so myself, and you know I"m a Sony fan.

And yes, there would be outrage. I'd personally be pissed that Sony would buy up a timed exclusive with TR, because they could certainly put that money to better use.

Master-H3541d ago

Yes it would be a dick move, and i could only imagine the xbox players uproar, just check the Destiney DLC debacle @uptownsoul posted below to see for yourself, and that's only DLC which MS pioneered since the days of GTA IV.

cyclindk3541d ago

Probably be the same reaction, but it's one thing to take a widely multiplatform game and "stealing" it from its fanbase and another to create your own IP.

Mikelarry3542d ago (Edited 3542d ago )

How is third party exclusive a good thing. No just no. If it was OK for final fantasy to go multiplatform then a game there is no reason tomb raider reboot which was multiplatform going exclusive. No matter how you try to twist this there is nothing good about it, it was done for cash nothing more nothing less

The author reasons

It will sell better from past data console exclusive always sells better

SE were disappointed with tomb raider reboot not selling well on multi but now on a single platform it will some how sell better

What is the point anymore

rainslacker3541d ago

There is something to be said for the exclusive bump. That reasoning does hold some water. However, TF was exclusive to X1(semantics aside) and it didn't really sell much more than it probably would have had it been available on the PS4. MS gained some console sales off it, but not in the hundreds of thousands that you'd hope to see off a big exclusive deal like this.

Manic20143542d ago (Edited 3542d ago )

Considering the fact TR started on play station, the uproar was obvious. It wouldn't have been that big if Sony had got it exclusive. To be fair there are many exclusives of Sony's which are 3rd party exclusives games, mainly indies which at this point will stay only on Sony's platform but the reason. This is getting a lot of flack is because it's an established multiplatform game. Not sure what the real reason it's gone to a single platform but I doubt MS would give a big enough cheque which would of covered the loss of 3 big platforms.

Surely Sony should of had a say on this issue.

''4 Reasons why Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox exclusivity is a good thing''

I could give you thousand about why it's a bad idea.

hotbeef3541d ago

Wasn't there already some news that it's really just a limited timed exclusive? Either way, I'll play it on whatever console but would prefer ps4 (especially if there's a framerate difference like the definitive edition)

Zero Dawn sold really well so I’m not sure this belongs. The second game released next to a big game again and it hurt it some I forget what it was though, oh yeah Elden Ring .
But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness464d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch464d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730464d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior464d ago (Edited 464d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot466d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto464d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior466d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B464d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws464d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730464d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69464d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

They're all solid games, but nothing quite matched the epicness of the first one for me. I think the 3rd one started off strong but once you got to that Peruvian area it took a massive nose dive for me.

lelo2play845d ago (Edited 845d ago )

You got to be kidding!
The first one was great at the time... but this latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games are also great.

LiViNgLeGaCY845d ago

I think he means the first one in the new trilogy.

CrimsonWing69845d ago

I meant the first of the new trilogy.

Furesis845d ago

yeah i remember liking the first one when it came out, so i tried the second one sometime after release and i just could not get into it, i couldn't finish it. So i might try the 3rd now that i got it for free but ehh. But i do remember enjoying the first one, i wonder if i'd feel the same way if i played it today? Better not taint those memories lol

ANIALATOR136844d ago

I was the same for some reason. Never finished the second one. I got like half way through maybe.

ActualWhiteMan844d ago (Edited 844d ago )

The first one of the latest trilogy is a masterpiece

Fishy Fingers845d ago

I'll take a copy of Shadow... Cheers.

Profchaos845d ago

Great games I've played them all on ps4 but it'll be good to finally try shadow on my rtx card.

Double_O_Revan845d ago

Trying to claim them and the store keeps crashing. lol.

gamefreaks365845d ago

EGS has been having issues all day.

RedDevils845d ago

Weird I don't has that issue.

Double_O_Revan845d ago

I finally got it after a while. But it was real bad for a while.

PeeShuter845d ago (Edited 845d ago )

Claim games by going to the website and login using ur credentials. I did the same as i couldnt use epic launcher. Also try reinstalling Epic Launcher I did it and it worked.

Double_O_Revan844d ago

I always go through the website. It was all just down for a while yesterday it seems.
