HD Remakes Look Exactly How I Remember Them

GeekParty writes: "It was today that I first saw the initial batch screenshots from the upcoming HD remake of the original Resident Evil. This remake, based on the GameCube reimagining of the heavily pixelated PSOne original, has gorgeous new texture work, improved lighting, and a heavily boosted resolution that pulls the entirety of the frame into sharper focus.

But, to my mind, it looks exactly like the GameCube release. To a tee."

I think there's a lot of confusion over the term 'remake' and that is what's causing a lot of arguments here. Resident Evil (GameCube) was a remake. Built from the ground up, new engine, fully recreated from scratched. Nothing from the original version was used (technically speaking) they even went to the trouble of rearranging some areas, puzzles, and even included some brand new sequences and levels that were absent from the original - making it feel like a fresh experience for veterans. Not to mention it looked astonishing. To this day, it still looks impressive. The game just drips with atmosphere and is actually complimented by its pre-rendered backgrounds. It's a treat to experience.

Oddworld: New n Tasty is another example. Although it doesn't quite have the same polish or attention to detail as REmake did. It's a great game, but there's something about how they've tweaked the art style to where it doesn't quite feel as grim or as threatening as the original did.

99% of these games that are being re-released are just that, re-releases with very minor improvements as sole selling points. 'Remaster' is almost too strong of a word to use on these games. They're merely running at a higher resolution which allows the already existing assets look crisper and sharper. That's hardly remastering.

Does that make these releases irrelevant and unnecessary? Not necessarily.

Of all the games to get hate for being re-released, Resident Evil strikes me as one of the more worthy games. If only for the fact it was, and is, a truly superb game that was released on a console that didn't have the demographic to match it. I imagine many people missed experiencing this game when it was originally released. Granted, they could have replayed it on the Wii - but no doubt there's a lot of people who were interested in this game, but didn't want to fork out however much it was for a GameCube at the time. More so than the likes of Sleeping Dogs, and Tomb Raider anyway - just to name a few.

As it stands, Resident Evil is a remake in the truest sense of the word. It's an incredible game that everyone with a remote interest in the genre should experience. Screenshots and videos will not do it justice. You just need to play it for yourself.

Something else regarding this particular release that interests me is the inclusion of an analog control scheme. As I understand it, they've tweaked the controls so that your character will move whichever way you push the analog stick. This in itself will no doubt come as a huge relief to those who couldn't get used to tank controls - yet no one is mentioning it. That being said, I don't think tank controls are that awkward in the first place.

Still, if you skip this release without ever playing it before - you're doing yourself an injustice.

(really wish I had an extra bubble to communicate with)

I hope that we will have a remaster of Re: zero and Code veronica as well, more people need to experience those games

If you can't tell the difference between the two versions in the screenshots, you'll definitely be able to tell the difference when you're actually playing the game. The Gamecube version looked beautiful back in 2002, but on a modern HD tv it looks murky and a lot of the finer details are blurred. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited to finally play it in HD.

Eternal Darkness was way ahead of its time especially for a Nintendo exclusive.

This Feature Makes Lethal Company Scarier Than Resident Evil

Games like Lethal Company end up scary because of their freeform nature, while Resident Evil's polish and storytelling ultimately make them rather tame in comparison. Agree or disagree?
