What Can Sony, Microsoft And Nintendo Do To Save Their Consoles?

With Nintendo reporting a $97 million loss even with Mario Kart now out, is it all over for console gaming?

This is a very odd article. It poses a question (see title) talks about what the last generation had and what this generation has, then proceeds to ask its readers on what they should do. Why post the question if your not going to attempt to answer it.

Anyway. The jump last generation was quite huge. Hence we got big titles fairly early on. It is going to take longer. It doesn't mean it needs saving

i have got to agree. last gen i never got a next gen console early on and i remember gamers and gaming media complaining about no games to play especially with the ps3 that had only motostorm and i think resistance in its first year of release.

OT: i had a thought today about sony and psnow. not sure if sony understands how important psnow is. with mobile becoming really powerful and claiming "console quality experience" sony could be ahead of the curve by being the first to that provides ps1,2,3,4 games to be able to be played on such devices thus stealing back some of the gamers they have lost to the ipads and andriod devices. obviously this would only be possible once mobile graphics does allow these complex games to be played on them. this approach in my opinion could keep their console and eco system relevant for quite awhile

IMO I think this is the first time a lot of people complaining have been early adopters to the new generation of consoles, because for old time gamers this is nothing new, and no big deal. WII U sales are improving, XB1 started off better than 360, and PS4 has been selling great since it's release. No saving needed.

They need to stop development on last gen, focus all resources on new gen and bring us games faster. The more choice people have to play on a consol, the more sales they will get.

Why did nintendo fail so much this gen. Weak hardware, not enough games, a lot of empty promises.

Why is MS falling so behind Sony. Because after last gen people now know Sony can deliver games from all their first party studios compared to MS and the more power isn't helping much either with Multiplats looking better for Sony which went in MS favor last gen.

With 8.7 mil PS4s sold I think Sonys do very well considering there isn't a big selection of games out yet. But all that will change in the next 6 months

What Can Sony, Microsoft And Nintendo Do To Save Their Consoles? hire more talents. I noticed most devs can't handle making games in a timely manner for the game engines of today. Its seem as though that the more RAM Devs work with, the crappier the games get; or the more time they have to spend producing their games.

Personally speaking, I think most devs just has to own up to themselves on what they can't or can handle. Open world doesn't cut it either. We need more variety in play mechanics. game engine's game play development structure are too repetitive from one game level to the next.

Nintendo has the right idea...They try to make every level different in play mechanic but the problems is they can do it in fast enough. They need to hire more talents as well.

Ummm, the loss Nintendo put out there was for Q1, Mario Kart didn't come out until Q2 towards the end at that.

Their fiscal year may start in 2nd quarter, therefore it is their first quarter results. ... December would therefore be 3rd quarter. Regardless their losses are decreasing and hopefully Oct to Dec will turn things around for them.

They can do this just listen my fellow gamers I've been trying to get the big 3 Sony Microsoft and Nintendo to make a cross play game.. Now listen in the game it's a MP shooter/almost anything now hold your like how's that?So if your playing on the WII u you get to pick nintendo owned and third party ips that we gamer think in our own gamer hearts belong on nintendo and each one will play kinda like how the would in there game so TUROK Samus FPS MArio one jump you get what I mean for game play and link hack and slash and same for the other 2 sony and Microsoft and each will have its own list only on there system and each one built to go with that ones strength wii u gamepad/ second screen 3DS remote play. I think Microsoft and Sony already know where gaming needs to go. Nintendo does need saving if it doesn't want to become a niche product by gaming standards. Contrary to what Sony fanboys think, gaming is headed to teh cloud. Compute and all. And the console of the future is already in your hand. Or pocket. Chips are getting smaller and more powerful. Bandwidth is becoming more readily available.

The chip in both the Xbox One and PS4 are mobile chips. And they will both receive die shrinks that will take them down to the 14nm size during this console cycle. The Puma cores that AMD developed will replace the Jaguar cores used in the current consoles in a month or so. They are 30-40% faster and the GPUs in them are more powerful too. Nintendo could modify one of those APUs and own this generation. Just take a look at AMDs chip roadmap and you will see the chips in the new consoles will look old very quickly. And DX12 and Mantle will make every new chip increase the gap between PCs, phones and tablets look huge in just a few years.

But the savior for Microsoft and Sony is those phones. People willingly upgrade phones at a far faster rate than consoles. So we may see fully compatible phones in the next few years to soften the transition to a completely phone gaming system in the next six or seven years. This will also allow consoles to better keep pace with those new PC APIs.

There is a reason Sony is pushing Xperia and a reason Microsoft bought Nokia. Phones are the next consoles. They'll have HDMI output, cloud support for streaming and compute. And you'll take it everywhere you go. With the new storage that allows TB levels in small cheap packaging and better speeds you won't need a console under your TV. You might need a battery pack though.

So get ready for a console upgrade every three years and expect it to be subsidized by your phone service provider. Not a bad deal to me.

Didnt know the Xbox One needed saving?The X1 has made profit since launch and this past quarter ending june the Xbox division profits was up again.Also its the second fastest selling console of all time at this point in its life and its only in 13 countrys right now.I know nintendo has been losing money for the past 3 years now and the playstation division has lost over 6 billion since 2006.This past quarter the playstation division finally made profit.So it might be ok now?Nintendo is the only one that is in trouble and needs to leave the console market.
