Back in November 2013, Sony and Microsoft launched their respective next-gen gaming consoles, the PS4 and the Xbox One. Even though Sony's console has always had a strong lead over Microsoft's console in terms of sales numbers, the Xbox One is actually better than the PS4 in one aspect: Updates.

I buy gaming consoles to play games, period, full stop. I could give a toss about the dashboard, apps or features that have nothing to do with gaming. I have smart phones, smart TVs, tablets, smart receivers, laptops, PC gaming rig, and various other devices for anything not gaming related.

Sony has the bang for the buck advantage having hardware that out performs it's competitors in the home console gaming market. They also offer more bang for the buck with their online service (PS+) as well.

Sony did monthly updates last gen and all we heard is banter. MS does it this generation and it's a good thing. You just got to love the whole "it only doesn't matter until it does" mentality / hypocrisy.

I personally enjoy consistency, and I think it's great that the XBO has monthly updates offering more features and improved functionality.

But the one thing I don't get is that when Sony was doing this with the PS3, it was a huge problem and people were trolling and complaining about the PS3 always updating and improving stability.

An update is never a bad thing (unless it crashes your console). Improved stability is something you should always want, because when you really want to game, and you keep crashing from an error, you're not going to be happy so just take the 5 - 10 minute update and be good. At least that's how I felt with the PS3.

As of today, I do feel as if Sony's moving a bit slow, and in comparison to MS they're moving really slow. But when you look at it from another perspective MS has to try harder, because they're losing the sales race right now, so any advantage helps.

Meanwhile Sony is trying to launch PSNow at the same time they're trying to get all this together. Their next major update has already been pretty much confirmed to be launching in August, so these articles are completely pointless knowing there is about to be an update. It's complaining for the sake of complaining.

Have you heard of the term "software drives hardware"?

It means that no matter how awesome your hardware is, if it isn't made to be taken advantage of in software it is meaningless. A perfect example of this is how the original PS3 lacked party chat and cross game chat despite having more powerful hardware and an operating system that took 50% more memory resources than Xbox 360. Yup the hardware was more powerful on PS3, but lacked shared memory pool that gave the Xbox 360 an edge.

So hardware is at best only half the value. The other half is the evolving software!

People were complaining on the PS3 (me included) due to a variety of issues including annoying updates when I wanted to play with seemingly completely featureless (stability only...) or features I don't use updates. Sometimes the download speed would be atrocious, and the update eats up 20 mins of my 40 minute play time.

In fact on the Xbox 360, if you had a game update you could update the game while the game is running. You didn't even have to restart the game!

With the new generation of consoles, I don't remember actually waiting for an update. It does it in the background, and the features upgrades have been pretty substantial.

I just turn on my Xbox One, and suddenly I have new features and I can play immediately.

Also, one big update coming isn't a trend changing event. It is something that is long overdue, and hopefully frequent feature laden updates on the PS4 is something that will continue.

Here's some actual cold hard truth with no spin attached to it.

No it won't. The only way the gap closes is if Sony twiddles their thumbs and never improves the PS4's abilities while just letting MS improve the Xbox One's abilities.

Sorry to say, the Xbox One and the PS4 will never be on equal terms because the PS4 is built better than the Xbox One. That isn't subjective opinion, that's observed fact. No matter what SDKs or APIs or "magical cloud technology" that the Xbox One needs to use to catch up to the PS4, the fact remains that the PS4 out of the gate is more powerful than the Xbox One and will have it's own SDKs, APIs, and other tricks to stay ahead.

To believe otherwise is to show naivety and ignorance.

Sony has the advantage over Microsoft in the games department because not only does Sony have more, and more talented, first party developers, they also are willing to take the biggest risks to get the most unique and best games on their console and always have been.

Everything you mentioned as having a problem with on the PS3 didn't stop the PS3 from outselling the Xbox One globally every year (except arguably 2011) and also didn't stop the PS3 from surpassing the Xbox 360, so the saying you brought up has worked against your point, not for it.

Lets not forget that ms started last gen hot and a lot better than they ended it. Some people won't be fooled again.

Why o Why it always fascinates me how although well intended how greatly well meaning people opinions differ from my own.

You note that Microsoft hasn't been consistent speaking to their hot start last gen but not remaining consistent, which I partially agree with but you also conveniently overlook how slow sony has been the last 2 gens to get those great exclusives out, they have a good game in inFamous SS for sure buy on the whole I think even most normal ps fans find the lineup for this whole year lacking. This gen in particular other than the hardware sales numbers from Sony things have been pretty slow, I mean expected updates for features found on ps3 and delivering great games like they did in the last few years leading up to this gen sony has been surprisingly quiet.

It's foolish to expect every game to be Uncharted2 or TLOU quality from sony but I considering that "sony ethos" you speak most people would think that ps4 isn't quite living up to its *consistent offering of high quality exclusives, from the start, we could both speculate on reasons for micros blunders, 180's= poor leadership, or speculate why sony has shifted to a indie focus= perhaps poor financial status imo but in reality it just seems to me like both companies experience highs and lows. We just make each situation out to be more than it is and of course preference causes some to remember things more favorably toward their choice brand.

Fortunately as you allude to things change and we can only hope that micro is indeed more invested in what made them= core games and online investment without trailing off with a casual focus and sonys financials won't affect their "ethos" so that they can not only crank out the kinds of games expected from them but also do it consistently without ps4 gamers having to wait too long before they deliver.

Ok, it could be argued the slow start that you've mentioned could be attributed to the ps3 releasing one whole year after the 360 so in comparison to the the console in its second year, the offerings seems scarce.

I would also like to state that there wasn't just a mirrored reversal in output. Sonys 'slow start' was nothing like ms's 3 year fall off or focus switch. By ethos I mean quality, quantity, variety and consistency. Sony took more risks despite being financially weaker than microsoft. More new ips, more games released with less time on the market, of course sony couldn't meet every parameter every time but they kept pumping and churning internally.

I do honestly believe that because of their dodgy end of last gen and subsequent bodged start to this one, ms will do better. I say this because they do not have the same advantages of last gen: Overall media backing, year/year+ headstart, cheaper price point, perceived/actual multiplat superiority, xbl superiority. Ms will have no option but to fight with games, games, services and more games. Wounded animal mentality. Will they be consistent with it.......time will tell but I believe as long as they're behind they will do better than their minimalistic ethos they practiced last gen.

Specs and hardware don't make a better system, but it adds a whole lot to the end result of a console. The functionality of each system offers different benefits and opportunities in different ways. Sony makes an amazing system built on power and exceptional first part studios, I would be lying if I said otherwise. Microsoft makes an amazing system that NOW is being advanced by the community for the community and has an awesome line up of IP's that have been a solid part of the gaming culture. For me all I see now is a win win and 2 systems that don't feel the same, but made more for us (slowly but surely) than we have had the luxury in the past. Lover them of hate them, but know each isn't going anywhere and neither will they sway the empty minds of the fanboys.

The Dreamcast was way better than PS1... a lot more powerful, better looking games, and a highly underrated console....was also more powerful than the PS2....Sega just didn't have the foresight to use the DVD format at the time and the controllers...even though had some really cool features... like the screen on the controller to call plays on NFL2k while playing on the couch with a friend was genius and the non-battery powered rumble pack was nice.... the controllers were very uncomfortable though...Sega didn't have the cash to support it either..... but the power difference between the ps1 and dreamcast is on scale to the difference in power between the xbone and PS4 8)

With ps+, u ve got great free and discounted games from all publishers all year long. No need for any more access than that.

PS4 has greatly improved over the software state on PS3 in terms of the OS. However, it is falling into the same trap of slow updates.

The hardware on PS4 is in every way better than PS3 was in comparison to their competition. In fact, Sony learned that lesson well with the Xbox 360 so props to them!

Now they just need to up their game on the software update and embrace EA Access instead of being salty over it. If Sony truly said no to EA Access, then they certainly wasn't doing Playstation Gamers any favors. In fact, on the contrary!

i have to be honest as a PS4 and PS3 owner the PS4 has been lacking. MS now have an exact model of PlayStation Plus and this month their GFG offerings are better than PlayStation Plus. even the PS3 is getting indie garbage along with a terrible and average shooter.

to anyone who says its 72 games a year stfu. PS3 and Vita are as good as dead consoles and its obvious Sony are toning down their offerings.

PS4 is lacking in media features like DLNA and MP3. they have conned PS4 owners into giving money for garbage indie garbages other than Outlast which was superb. theres barely any decent games so we can't even get the most of the online aspect of the subscription. very underwelmed from Sony.

sales don't equal better, it just equals more popular. If a product has more features, functionality, and purpose at a competitive price with minimal negative drawbacks in comparison it can probably be considered "better". It doesn't mean more popular.

I love my ps4, i honestly sincerely do ( i rocked TLOU remastered all night long...BEAUTIFUL) - but my xbox one has pretty much gone through rapid upgrades and functionality in comparison. literally every update adds new functionality or fixes usability along with the standard issue of bug fixes and stability. things like better app management, more multitasking functionality (snapping), external drive storage etc... the biggest thing I have gotten from a ps4 update is dimming the light bar and an app called share factory that I haven't even loaded up.

As of right now, the ps4 is the better performing console in terms of sales and game resolution, but in terms of upgrades and features its behind the xbox to a now surprising degree.

I use my PS4 for games 1st and it's only off when I'm at work, away from the house or watching TV. You say features like your desired features are the only ones that matter. I play games 1st, watch videos and listen to music and guess what my PS4 has that covered perfectly.

People need to remember that xbox fans grab the one thing thats different between the two consols and run with that like it makes their consol better than the other. Lol they did it with sales, multiplats looking better and Voice chat last gen. Now they don't have any of that to use so they grasp at straws.

Well god dam, MS is updating the Xbox 1 more frequently than Sony is the PS4? A shucks well I'm trading in my PS4 and getting me a xbox. Who's with me? lol.

The only thing I care about on a consol is the games, the thing that immerses me the most in a game is the graphics and atmosphere created by that power. Tomb Raiders atmosphere for example.

All that other stuff that comes with a consol is a bonus. What I'm digging the most about these bonus features is the video capture and screenshot capture. As long as consol manufactors improve on that then I'm happy and Sonys doing that. Youtube upload? Yes please. Clear all that space taken up by saved videos by uploading it to youtube and keeping my videos forever. Yes please, free cloud storage and being able to share my experiences with anyone who wants to look.

Xbox one started out with a few more features, and the ps4 keeps getting more and more of those features. The ps4 continues getting better than the xbox one, not the xbox one is getting closer.

The differences in update frequency between my ps4 and my xb1 are pretty staggering. the xb1 has practically become twice as functional while the ps4 has pretty much mostly received performance updates and is largely unchanged - both in usability and functionality. Im not saying one is better than the other (they both have strengths and weaknesses over each other), but the xb1 is practically a different machine from when i orginally purchased it. i would like to see some functionality added to the ps4 beyond, small minor tweaks as I feel its missing some pretty basic things.

Well, for n4g apparently this gen, selling point is 1080p. I don't play updates, I don't play features, I don't play apps, I don't sit there and play with the UI and think "wow this is great, what a fun UI".

I play games. Said games look better on the PS4, the hardware is better, it can hit higher resolutions, framerates and have better effects more often. You can upgrade the PS4 software (although I don't really care) but you are stuck with the xbone hardware.

1080p IS a selling point, my TV is 1080p, not 792p or 900p and upscaling and related artifacts and aliasing look like crap.

Personally I wish Sony would NOT bloat up the PS4 with crApps and "features" that I won't use and will just take memory and power away from game use. Let the A.D.D. xboners "snapp apps" in between playing their low res choppy games, I will stick to the best console gaming experience.

In fact you can actually go back in the post history of some of the 360s most devout posters, and quote their complaints about how much there ps3s (That they never play) have to do system updates every Time they turn them on.

Fast forward to today, and this is all the sudden OK for Xbox.

I dont think it was the number of updates the PS3 had, as much as how damn long they took, and how little they actually added most of the time.

The X1 updates are fairly quick, and actually add features every month. I used to get pissed any time i turned my PS3 on and saw that there was an update, knowing i'd have to wait 15 mins for the DL, then another 15 minutes for the damn thing to install.

Both the PS4 and and X1 handle the SPEED of the actual updates well (i own both) which is nice. So far, the X1 has done a better job of giving MEANINGFUL updates.

The fact is, PS4 Has a better gpu and ram. Now that is fact, the ones with a lack of intelligence deem this as the winning factor of the current gen.

The xbox one, on the other hand has grown rapidly since launch day, far more then the PS4, with certain features, some may argue that are better experienced on the xbox. As the months wind on, there is a sense of rapid progression on xbox vs. Slow progression on the PS4.

Owning both, I certainly believe this to be the case based off my experience with them from launch day. But everyone has their own opinion.

All I can see is the Sony Hardcore foaming at the mouth in every single positive xbox article, to the point where most people can guess exactly what will be in the comments sections.

I will give you an answer, the PS4 and X1 have many of the same games they are usually referred to as 3rd party titles or multi platform titles and in the case with a few of these titles the PS4 version runs at a higher resolution or frame rate, in some cases both.

Now it doesn't matter how insignificant you are now going to say those differences are the point is it is graphical superiorities and hey you did ask, me I don't really care I don't play Titanfall through gritted teeth because it isn't 1080p.

As it pertains to multiplats, the PS4 is superior. And not by one or two lines of pixels, either, like the 360 had over the PS3. The difference is frequently 1/3 to 50% more, and the same is often true of framerate. Even when these numbers are matched, other features- such as anti aliasing- are better on the PS4. If the small difference between the two HD consoles was a big deal last gen- and you're lying if you say it wasn't- then the difference between the XB1 and PS4 should be just as important. Right?

Now for the exclusives. People have, sadly, argued that the PS3 didn't have the best looking exclusives last gen. Whether you liked the games is irrelevant; they were graphically superior. And now those same developers have even better hardware this time around. Hardware that's superior to the competition, and will only get more capable over time. Already, we've seen the PS4 blow the XB1 out of the water in that department (sorry, but Ryse doesn't touch inFamous or Killzone overall, let alone The Order), and that looks to continue.

It's not about the update, but about the features, and yes, it is a factor to decide which console to buy.

You are right, gaming is first, and that's why I am choosing the PS4 over the Xbox One (I like more PS4 exclusives than Xbox's). However, it always nice to have other features so that you can enjoy the console even more for other reasons. It is also not about 'the Xbox has this feature and the PS4 doesn't' because each console is their own (It's like demanding the Wii U to play Blu rays because the other consoles can), but if Sony has previously released those features and in less powerful hardware, why can't they do it on the PS4?

There are some things that when introduced, people start getting for granted. Look what happened when Sony removed rumble out of the DS3. Would you be able to drive a car without hydro-electric wheel? Or have a phone without Caller ID? People get used to some features and expect to have them when something new comes out, unless they are replaced for something better, which is not the case here.

Exclusive wise it has been a little dry, but we just got The last of us (even if its a remaster), but you cant deny its a great game, little big planet 3 is shaping to be good specially that you can play all user created levels since the first one came out, and drive club is coming out soon, not to mention all the sweet 3rd party games.

Both consoles have their pros and cons. At the moment, I personally prefer the Xbone. The PS4 has better hardware but the Xone has better software.

In the end, I went with the Xbone because despite the PS4's superior hardware, the graphics thus far, are pretty much the same. But I would definitely consider buying a PS4 down the line. That's what's so great about this current market; WE HAVE OPTIONS.

Better controller that still relies on batteries, has no new features like the share button/touchpad/built in speaker but costs the same, still no motion control sixaxis and it requires an extra peripheral purchase to plug your headphones into. You're mighty forgiving.

The point of this article isn't about the power the ps4 vs Xbone

It basically about MS actually listening to the consumer since the DRM fiasco and improving the experience and value of the xbox one by adding feature.
You can hate MS all you want but they mostly addressed all the major complaints regarding Xbox one.

Yeah, & I suppose Sony's console is getting worse....As soon as I booted up my PS4, I noticed it regressively started getting less powerful, less features, less games, less of everything... Apparently the reason Minecraft has not released on PS4 yet, is due to the fact the machine is now less powerful than a SNES, so it can't run Minecraft..... By next week, reports suggest it will be unable to run tetris.

In other news, the MS propping up, defending, & patriotic support by the Western world is to be admired... I guess they need as much support as possible in this world, as no other American or European company has EVER made it past ONE ROUND, in the console manufacturing world,.....not since Nintendo came in, after the Atari console crash, & built the biz back up to bigger levels than ever before, then Sony came along & doubled those numbers when they smashed there way through the marketplace door, with guns blazing, annihilating ALL sales records before or since...In fact, Nintendo's SNES held the record before that with 60 million+ install base....Sony then came in, and with there 1st attempt in the market, obliterated that number, by DOUBLING it.... Either way though, both are awesome for the market....MS not so much IMHO... But they have done well, & lasted waaaaay longer than ANY other American console manufacturer.... The PS4 was designed by Sony s an easy sell. Easy to program for, whack the best tech in so you always have that as a selling point, make it about social gaming / networking to appeal to the egotist in many and don't spend too long thinking about trying to do anything different gameswise from what the PS3 did.

In every generation I tend to support whatever is the underdog. I bought the Gamecube. I supported the PS3 when it wasn't particularly cool to. So the massive popularity of the PS4 with people who only want to use it as a stick to hit whatever Microsoft is doing leaves a bad taste with me. It makes me sympathise with the underdog. The underdog in console gaming always does something right if it's by a big company. One thing Microsoft did was secured an Insomniac Games exclusive in Sunset Overdrive. That game pops out the screen with colour and energy. Sony have Infamous Second Son so I understand that not everyone has to go mad for Sunset Overdrive.

Sony were generous with the PS3 with free online. So I don't begrudge them success with the PS4 even when it's not hitting the heights of the PS3's best yet.
But I don't appreciate the massive seesaw to Sony at the expense of everyone else when Sony haven't even done anything particularly out of the ordinary gameswise on PS4 yet.

First off if thats xboxs secret weapon thats just sad. Just means they screwed up in the beginning and have to fix it later on so that pushes manpower toward fixing (updates) and away from games. Your secret weapon is also your weakness.
If what you say is true, Sony is doing perfectly fine. And idk if anyone really noticed but at the end of the xboxs life cycle. both the PS4 and Xbox1 will be about the same in sales. I think Destiny is a great example of when suddenly the amount of pixels on my screen stopped mattering, the PS3 version while visually inferior to PS4 and XB1 played and felt the same as it did on other platforms.
If it didn't really impact my experience across a generational gap I really can't see how a resolution difference between PS4 and XB1 hold any real bearing on what you should buy, I also think that people need to be reminded that consoles when not rendering on your screens native res lets say 900p to 1080p use a hardware scaler not found on PC mitigating the perceived difference again.
The only reason people like to troll posts about which console is winning the holy war for gaming's future is when A: They don't have anything to play, or B: Work for posts

I own a ps4 but if MS keeps doing it's monthly updates and providing new features within every update, it will surpass the ps4 in terms of features.

For every 3 Playstation updates, two are performance updates and one is feature oriented.

While the other camp has something new for the user in each update.
