Developer On PS4's 8GB RAM: 'It Is Pretty Difficult To Be Technically Overwhelmed By New Hardware'

"Ever since the announcement and the subsequent launch of the PlayStation 4, several developers have praised Sony's decision to include 8GB of RAM in its latest console."

I can see why, If your vision suits more power, you simply need it.

bubblebobble3560d ago

end of the day a ps4 is £350, its simply kimpossable to build a pc with as much power as a ps4 for that money, and dont include a pc that has no windows op system and no controller keyboard or mouse. to buy a pc with the same speed its gona cost you atleast £600, and think of all the stuff ps4 does better.

Matt6663559d ago

just download Linux, that save you some money when building a PC

TimeSkipLuffy3560d ago

I wonder what would have happened if Sony would have spent $100 dollars to get a faster GPU and more RAM...for the same price as X1 with Kinect...

GW2123560d ago

I think they would have upgraded the CPU before RAM.

Tzuno3560d ago

very true, cpu even if it is 8 core it is a weak one, good thing that gaming needs more gpu power than cpu.

ABizzel13559d ago

I kind of agree, but these consoles as well as future gaming PCs are going to be heavily GPU focused than CPU focused.

I think it would have benefitted them more to upgrade the GPU, and add 4GB of system RAM, keeping the 8GB of GDDR5 specifically for gaming.

younglj013560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

Wow...My first time hearing this song...holy crap...

andibandit3560d ago

Yeah i Remember those first few years of the PS3, hellish

mclean_5143560d ago

Thanks for the video never seen it before LMAO

Giru0173560d ago

Ufff, those first years were rough. I remember playing P.A.I.N. simply because there was nothing else to play besides Resistance and Super Puzzle Fighter :(

I think to the general consumer (which none of us are), more powerful hardware at a lower price than the Xbox one would be more appealing than much more powerful hardware at the same price as the Xbox.

ABizzel13560d ago

As @GW212 said we probably would have got a CPU and GPU upgrade over RAM considering it was hard enough getting 8GB of GDDR5in there.

As for the GPU it probably would have been and underclocked r9 280 instead of the underclocked r9 270 currently powering the ps4, making every game 1080p, and bringing 1080p @ 60fps a complete reality for the majority of games.

If they did add RAM it would probably be 4GB DDR3 specifically for system RAM and leave the 8GB GDDR5 specifically for games.

TimeSkipLuffy3560d ago

yeah. That is what I would have preferred. 2-4GB RAM for the system and have nice 8GB GDDR5 for games only. Developers would be all over this and we would see more games with 60fps instead of 30fps.

Azzanation3560d ago

@TimeSkipLuffy - Instead they spent $100 extra on a accessory (PS Camera) that's inferior to its competitors...

TimeSkipLuffy3560d ago

I don't know if it is inferior. I have both but haven't used both of them (yet) :D.

LOL@Given that 8GB of RAM is more than the average amount of memory found across PCs

older PC's maybe, but new ones..no, just no

DoomeDx3560d ago

Its unified GDDR5 RAM. The same RAM GPU Cards are using. Most GPU's only have 2GB / 3GB's of RAM.

Fishy Fingers3560d ago

And a dedicated 8-12 of system memory. With the OS overheads and CPU resources the PS4 GPU probably has access to roughly the same amount of RAM as the average PC card, 2-3 GBs.

Mikeyy3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

http://www.newegg.com/Produ...

Lets look here, its a well known fact that those of us who can build our own system are a tiny group.

90% of PC Gamers are going to buy a prebuilt for a reasonable price, Page one of my link, whats this? all the computers only have 4-8GB of DDR3? I thought you said computers all have 8-12?

Second, I haven't played a single PC game yet that could utilize over 4GB of RAM? (Hardly any PC games are even x64 native, still to this day???) So why do you need 12+ GB of DDR3?

Its the GDDR5 on you GPU that you need a LOT of, and coincidently, that's what the PS4 has a lot of.

You could put 24GB of DDR3 in you system and it wont do squat for gaming, I hope you know that?

AndrewLB3560d ago

Fishy Fingers- My PC has 16gb of system ram and once windows is up and running It's only using 12% of it's memory, which is roughly 2gb in use. And don't forget, it's far more efficient for the GPU and CPU parts to each have their own sequestered pool of memory to draw from than it is to have them both choking off the bandwidth by over-saturating the memory bus. Plus it's optimal for CPU's to use DDR3 due to low latency, and GPU's DDR5 due to high bandwidth and speed for frame buffering and rendering pipelines.

Having a unified shared block of memory is done specifically to cut costs.

3560d ago
BitbyDeath3560d ago

@Andrew, PS3 did that lastgen but devs found it too hard to code for which is why 360 had better looking multi-plats.

tee_bag2423560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

The unified RAM was a great move by Sony in my opinion. The GPU bus, memory bandwidth, ROPs and shader count dictate how power the card actually is though. This is unfortunately what makes the GPU in the PS4 a mere mortal and not the supercomputer some of you wish it to be. It's why not every game can manage to pull off 60fps. Better than the X1 but both are about as powerful as each other in the big world of GPU's. They are almost identical to AMD's fastest mobile (not desktop) GPU at their time of inception , which is a 7970m.

dcj05243560d ago

Well it is, technically speaking not exactly overwhelming.

Volkama3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

It is something of a double-bluff headline. The dev actually meant it completely literally that he is not overwhelmed.

Title says: "difficult to be overwhelmed by new hardware"
You read: "difficult to be overwhelmed by new hardware, but it's really happening!"
But it is actually: "no it is not overwhelming".

The headline is presented in a way that implies the dev was overwhelmed by the memory.

They actually directly asked "are you overwhelmed by the 8gb GDDR memory in the PS4?", desperately hoping for juicy headline about how a dev was overwhelmed. They didn't get the "yes" they were pushing for, but they just ran the headline anyway.

This may actually be a new low for GamingBolt. And that is saying something.

dcj05243560d ago

Volkama, I got what the dev is saying. Look above and below me though. People misread the words lol.

andibandit3560d ago

How I read it:

"The PS4 is a supercomputer"

Volkama3560d ago

For a minute there I thought I was reading a satirical piece taking the p*** out of GamingBolt. Then I realised it was actually the real GamingBolt.

strangeaeon3560d ago

Why does Gamingbolt ask the same questions over and over? "So how bout that amazing PS4 GDDR5 ram?" Or "What are some of the challenges of the Xbox One hardware?"

JsonHenry3560d ago

My PCs for the last 6 years have had at least 8gigs of RAM for just the system alone. That isn't counting the Video RAM on the GPU..

MCTJim3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

Exactly, that was my whole point, but some people just don't understand.

Highlife3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

Yes but your ram speed is much slower

Mikeyy3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

These are all your GPU's that feature 8GB of GDDR5

http://www.newegg.com/Produ...

Boy look at those prices.

Here is all your GPU's that feature 6GB, (With overhead PS4 only utilizes 5GB so were getting closer)

http://www.newegg.com/Produ...

Damn, that's still a little pricey

Lets look at 4GB GDDR5 GPUS

http://www.newegg.com/Produ...

Yeah, ok that's reasonable, but where still spending a lot more money then a PS4 user is.

The whole point is the PS4 is a beast because its only $400. That's the whole point, Stop throwing you $2000 PCs at it, saying look what this can do.

JsonHenry3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

Doesn't matter, my older PCs even with slower system ram is more capable than the new PS4. The speed of your RAM isn't nearly as important as how much RAM you actually have.

Don't believe me? Go ask the devs themselves which is more important.

And my PC will be much more useful and has a vastly expansive games catalogue as well as an almost infinite amount of uses compared to the PS4. And you don't need a $2k PC to outperform the PS4 so please stop acting like you do. And this article is all about not being overwhelmed by the RAM. Why? Because they're used to higher limits and better results (for years!) on the PC platform. So it is a very valid point in this debate.

Is the PS4 the most powerful console? Yes! (assuming you're not counting Steam Machines) Is it a beast when taking all platforms for gaming into account? Not even close.

3560d ago
sorane3560d ago (Edited 3560d ago )

@Mikeyy

I guess you didn't get the memo that PS4 can only utilize 4.5gb ram for games. You also don't seem that tech savvy since you don't know that the ram is SHARED and it will never be able to use anywhere close to that amount ram for vram. You're listing prices for cards that have more vram than the PS4 will ever be able to use. That first card alone has about 4x the amount of vram than the PS4 will ever see.

Oh look another console topic flooded with PC elitists.

Why do you feel the need to come hate on consoles? If they are so bad then surely you don't need to.

ssjkiet3559d ago

I'm going to 100% have to diff on this ... the main gb of Ram today is 8gb ........ i worked at best buy & some of our high end PC's started off at 8gb & went up...

Sokol3560d ago

Compare to the 256x2 in the PS3?

It's quite a substantial upgrade. Then again, the Cell Processors were the core of last generation power source.

Sokol3560d ago

Yeah, true as well. It was pretty impressive seeing some of the accomplishment first party developers were able to pull off.

Best Racing Game of 2014

gamrReview's Connor Weller: "What can be said about this game that hasn't already been said? Mario Kart 8 takes a well established formula - choose your favourite Mario mascot and race to the finish - and completely flips it on its head. Quite literally. The addition of anti-gravity produces some stunning racetracks, made all the more amazing thanks to the game's beautiful graphics and art style. New items, such as the Super Horn, which allows you to destroy that ever-troublesome blue shell, add yet another layer to the long-running franchise."

I know Mario Kart 8 fun game but better than FH2 ?? i don't think so.

Gazondaily3396d ago

They are different types of games mate.

Both are fun but I can easily see how MK8 can be more enjoyable than FH2 for many.

Magicite3395d ago

Im not into racing games, but I wouldn't call MK8 a racing game exactly, more like family game, thats why it cant be a rival to arcade or sim racers.

luxtronix3396d ago

without any doubt DRIVECLUB #1 of 2014, best looking, grate game mechanic, super dynamic gameplay, DC best racing game of 2014.

sorane3396d ago

The braindead rubberbanding ai automatically disqualifies that game. Nothing worse in a racing game than making the ai slow down if you crash to wait for you or speed up and race perfect if you're too far ahead. That's a big no no in any racer. Nothing great or dynamic about it.

OmegaShen3396d ago

MK8 yes, the only bad thing is battle mode being change.

An Driveclub? Felt like Aloneclub, lack of cars, lack of game running right and lack of anything that made it a club.

crazychris41243396d ago (Edited 3396d ago )

2014 was a great year for racing fans but 2015 is shaping up to be even better. Project CARS, American Truck Sim will be released in the next couple months. Early access games like Next Car Game: Wreckfest, BeamNG, Carmageddon: Reincarnation, Road Redemption and Distance should be finished by the end of the year. There are also rumors of NFS Underground and F1 on current gen coming out this year

slappy5083396d ago

Driveclub was a nice game, really enjoy playing it at the mo, my first racing game in years and it will probably stay that way in future
