PS3 overtakes Wii U in Japan to become top-selling home console again

The PS3 has once again become the top-selling home console in Japan, according to the latest sales data from Famitsu.

Sony’s 2006 machine outpaced Nintendo’s divisive box by a mere 32 units sold last week.

Abash3562d ago

I hope the PS3 continues selling for years to come, but Sony needs to drop the price and maybe give it a redesign (PS3 Ultra Slim).

There's still a ton of life left in it

Nineball21123562d ago

Not sure about a redesign at this point, but I agree that there is still a lot of life left in it.

HighResHero3562d ago

These PS3 sales are good news to me. It means we will continue to see plenty of Japanese support. Some of the newer development tools, combined with strong sales, and a possible price drop could be good news for people who care about interesting games. We may see a bunch of great RPG/Other titles emerge.

zeuanimals3562d ago (Edited 3562d ago )

If they drop the price, they're gonna be selling it at a loss again. Apparently they're working on a new CELL to replace the old one, this one is supposed to be cheaper and smaller which would allow them to drop the price without selling at a loss or maybe just selling it at a smaller loss.

Xof3562d ago

Most of that life is only there because the PS4 isn't backwards compatible. Sony's got themselves in a position where their new console (PS4) is competing with their old console (PS3), and suffers for the comparison.

What I find interesting in this whole turnabout is the fact that the WiiU was ever outselling the PS3 to begin with, given the relatively huge disparities in their respective libraries.

But then, of course, there's crap like the XB3/PS4 sales which are generated purely by hype.

PS3 is best console right now, best games library and thats the reason Im not moving onto current gen yet.

i just had to play Mario Kart 8, couldn't wait

medman3561d ago

I own a ps3 and 360, but I needed my ps4 primarily for Infamous, Tomb Raider definitive edition, TLOU remastered, Transistor, etc. etc. I look forward to the fall for Destiny, Far Cry, Drive Club, GTAV, Project Cars, etc. etc. I can understand if money is a factor, but there are so many quality titles already available, with many more to come in 2014. 2015, even early in the 2015 is looking phenomenal.

Metallox3562d ago (Edited 3562d ago )

I'm not trying to prove anything, seriously, but I thought the Meadia Create report had the Wii U in third place and overall, better sales for all platforms. http://gematsu.com/2014/07/...

Trolltroll3562d ago (Edited 3562d ago )

You are totally right.
Just to bash the Wii U over third place...pitiful.

Fake sales data look at original mediacrate numbers above

Wii U sold 8658 Third Place
PS3 sold 7763 4th Place

Metallox called it first.

I think the expression you were looking for was "wait a go Sony" or "way to go Sony". I've never heard anyone use the expression you just used.

KwietStorm_BLM3562d ago

I've never heard anyone say "wait a go" either.

marioJP873562d ago

I thought you would have meant, "way to go, Sony" but I could be wrong.

Theyellowflash303562d ago

Since when does Sony make the 3DS?

ShinMaster3562d ago

I think he means "everywhere" as in locations.
Their home consoles are doing better in most places.

Theyellowflash303562d ago

"think he means "everywhere" as in locations.
Their home consoles are doing better in most places."

How did you get that, from this:

Sony Domination everywhere.

The 3DS is the top selling device in Japan, the Wii U actually outsold the PS3 in Japan. Famitsu's numbers are not as accurate as The Media Create. Which charted the Wii U HIGHER than the PS4 and PS3 in Japan

ShinMaster3562d ago

Because "everyWHERE" implies place.

ritsuka6663562d ago

Errrr PS vita is flop worldwide dude.

OP_Tigrex3562d ago (Edited 3562d ago )

Errr in regards to consoles, dude.

ritsuka6663562d ago (Edited 3562d ago )

Errr in regards to consoles, dude.

You should put 'Sony console domination'. BTW, Sony is not domination shit because video games market does not apply only for consoles.

Skylar3561d ago

@OP_Tigrex

Not this again. Are you saying that the Vita is not a console? Then I wonder why we call them "handconsoles" (literally translated from the word "käsikonsoli" in Finnish). I really find this logic of yours so stupid.

Mikito113562d ago

And outselling ps4 too... Way to leave that part out lol

imXify3562d ago (Edited 3562d ago )

PS3 and WiiU still have a lot to do to catch up to the PS4's 642k sold.

http://prntscr.com/45n80p

The article didn't mentionned the total amount of consoles sold this year in Japan.

Concertoine3562d ago

Well its to be expected that the PS4 sells that much in the year it debuts. The ps3 and wii u are 8 and 2 years old this year, respectively.

joab7773562d ago (Edited 3562d ago )

True but Its b/c more than anywhere in the world, Japan is all about games...period...whether its the 3ds, vita or ps3.

Eventually the ps4 will have what they want but until then, they dont care about resolution and frame rate. They want particular games and the ps3 has a bunch coming out.

zeuanimals3562d ago

They're not just about games, they're about very specific games, games that are abundant on the Vita and 3DS. They're also more about mobile and handhelds than consoles, it just fits the Japanese lifestyle more.

HappyWithOneBubble3562d ago

PS4 is not in competition with PS3 so of course they wouldn't compare 2 of Sony's consoles together and plus PS3 and Wii U more affordable in Japan than PS4.

BrandanT3562d ago

If it's saying "PS3 is top selling home console" doesn't that mean it's also outselling PS4 as well?

Nineball21123562d ago (Edited 3562d ago )

Yes, it does. It outsold the PS4 as well.

randomass1713562d ago

I feel like that should be the other way around. oh well I can't complain at seeing a Sony console doing well especially in Japan. :)

zsquaresoff3562d ago

Last time I checked, Ps3 was a Sony brand. It's kinda like when Microsoft tells 360 and the bone combine to ship 1.2 million consoles.

The reason why PS3 is outselling Wii U is because of multiple JRPG titles for PS3.

Which in not the case with PS4, yet.

kingdom183562d ago

Its that "yet" part that I'm craving.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Coming Back for a New Generation

Originally launched in 2011, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is coming to Nintendo Switch, so It's time to look back at the original.

jznrpg10h ago

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

darthv7210h ago

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.

Fallout 3's Reveal Led To Death Threats And Bethesda's First Security Guard

The artist behind Fallout 4’s Deathclaw reveals just how bad things got back when Bethesda took over the series

anast12h ago

People are stupid I get it. No one should feel unsafe,

But I think they need to talk about why they cut so many corners during the development process and why none of their games ever look current. And why they think all of this is okay while they charge full price.

LucasRuinedChildhood11h ago

As much as Bethesda deserve criticism, that's not really relevant to the reveal of Fallout 3 in 2007.

VenomUK9h ago

The default angle Kotaku always go for is to highlight the worst in gaming.

I would’ve focused on the creative.

gold_drake7h ago

there is no "but". the hell lol
you dont send death threats, period.
