Xbox One Sales More Than Double in June with New $399 Option and Unveiling of Holiday Games Lineup

Over the past month, we’ve seen a strong spike in interest in our Xbox One console options, including the new $399 offering, and the amazing lineup of games announced during E3. Since the new Xbox One offering launched on June 9th, we’ve seen sales of Xbox One more than double* in the US, compared to sales in May, and solid growth in Xbox 360 sales.

I'm guessing since they didn't say it was the highest selling next gen console or the #1 console in the June NPD, that means the PS4 outsold it yet again. That really looks bad for MS since the Xbox One is now selling at the same price as the PS4, which many would say the PS4 being cheaper was the only reason it was getting outsold each month.

It's a 5 week tracking period, so 30k/ wk with a price cut. That's pretty terrible, and still tracking way under 360 sales with launches aligned. Next month they'll be back to 100k or lower. This is the most obvious form of damage control prior to Sony stomping on their teeth in June NPD. I expect Sony comes in around 250-300K, since it's a 5 week tracking period.

Usually they do sold to (retailers) numbers and not really sold through (to customers). Curious if they could sold even more if they dropped the price even more, seeing as the kinect stand alone will be going for $150 to $200 since the kinect v2 pc version is taking preorders for $200.

"Xbox One Sales More than Double." The announcement isn't as good as it sounds. May was the XB one's worst selling month. June figures are actually a cheat because they consist of FIVE weeks of sales and not four.

Many gamers waited until June to purchase an XB one which would have give the June figures a boost. It is a positive step that sales have been increased but the July sales numbers will tell us if the boost is consistent.

Other than Walmart, the X1 is farther behind the PS4 in online sales than at any time since launch. And at Walmart they are giving away multiple games with the X1 meaning they are losing money on those units.

This seems like a preemptive strike because they know the news tomorrow will not be good. I can imagine people saying, "Well the Kinectless Sku didn't launch until the 9th of June" but if you look at the sales it isn't helping and the units being moved at Walmart are Kinect versions.

As others have said, this just means they doubled the previous month which was the lowest so far because of the impending cheaper sku. If that low month is thrown out and we compare this month to the previous month of "normal" sales, it would mean a sales bump of… not very much at all. When you take into account that this 5 weeks of data it looks even worse.

PS4 is outselling the Xbox ONE because of media reception favoring the former. It's basically set in stone. Even if the Xbox ONE was priced lower, say 350, a 400 dollar PS4 would likely outsell the Xbox ONE in most cases. Most developers of multi-plat games have a preference for the PS4 as well.

As far as pricing, the Wii U is the cheapest console of this generation.

@Abash PS4 will always sell better then the XB1 because its available in 70+ countries compared to 13. Come back and say it once the XB1 is on equal ground. Japan has already shown interest in the XB1 with there pre-orders and there are plenty of other people in this world that would love to play XB1 games.

Also who the hell cares who sells more, I couldn't care less how much iPhones sell over Galaxy because there both great phones. As long as there both successful means will get better phones every year.

Xbox One was bundled with Kinect for $100 more. Kinect has been removed whick puts the Xbox at the same price as the PS4. If knowing that the 1080p image on your screen is native vs upscaled is going to burn a hole in your heart, the PS4 is the way to go. If you put more emphasis on games than you do hardware, you have to decide if the PS4, Xbox One or even WiiU is right for you.

Based on total sales in the same amount of time. Yes the XBO is selling better than the 360, mainly due to the 2+ million units it sold at launch.

Based on Year 1 sales (aka January 1 - December 31). No the 360 has been outselling the XBO even though supply constraints were hitting the 360.

So it depends on which way you choose to look at it. From a Marketing Standpoint the first is what you give to the public to make things seem like their completely fine.

But from a business standpoint the 2nd is the real story and it's the reason MS is doing so much to change their current state.

@tiffac008: It's not bad, but it isn't that good either, because May's numbers could be considered to show a drop-off in sales from people who were anticipating the June SKU. So June's increase in sales + May's decrease = a two month total of ~237,00 (assuming the 160k estimate turns out to be about accurate for June).

That's just a marginally bigger number than if you didn't announce a new SKU and sold at April's numbers during the two months, which would have been ~230,000. That's about a 3% margin of difference, which means there really isn't any appreciable significant difference at all.

This month's NPD accounts for 5 weeks instead of 4. Console sales across the board will seemingly see a spike. With that said, I don't find it hard to believe that the X1 has doubled it's US sales with the introduction of the 399$ version and an extra week.
They've put out a quality product at a competitive price, I don't see how their bottom line could be anything but better.

I don't think the "general public" even knew there was a difference. I doubt they really care about 900p vs 1080p or know the difference between 30fps vs 60pfs. Unfortunately for the American market, which the xbox is reliant on, it's a very fickle market. They'll leave you as quickly as they flocked to you... And right now, the PS4 is just "hotter" than the X-1, not by much, in terms of numbers, mind you. The real difference is the world market, that is where the PS4 is really widening the gap. Fear not, if you own an X-1, the X-1 will sell. Many great exclusives and multiplats, have and will continue to make it's way to the system. MS will not allow the X-1 to fail.

XBO: 155k
Wii U: 117k

July should be the same thing with TLoU being the only big game hitting that month. The holiday season could be in favor of the XBo simply, because it'll get it's worldwide launch which will inflate numbers for those who rush out to get it, but ultimately they'll be back in 2nd come New Year (albeit a closer 2nd than before).

May was their worse month thus far (77k), and to say they've doubled the sales in June in comparison to their worst selling month isn't some to brag about when put into perspective that they were selling 115k units in April, and for June they're estimated to be around 155 - 160k units. The $399 SKU has definitely helped, but it's not the boost that fanboys were hoping for.

Now I'm with you, the XBO is doing just fine, and there's nothing wrong with selling +100k of anything per month. It only becomes a problem when you compare it to the competition (PS4), and sales from last-gen.

retail calendars use the 4-4-5 method cuz they base the year on a 4 quarters equally split into 13 weeks which results in 1 month within each quarter having an "additional" week... it's purely to keep the quarterly results in check

When MS has crappy numbers, they like to tout that they "doubled sales"! Sounds great in a press release...but means nothing in real life. They do the same thing with Windows Phone and with Surface. It's not hard to double your sales when the original number was so low! And if you double your sales, but still lag behind the market leader, you didn't really accomplish much, did you? And if you double sales, and STILL didn't beat the market leader, even after introducing a lower priced product, that should tell you something else, right?

No matter how MS spins this, they lost June. If they lost June in North America, then they were absolutely SLAUGHTERED globally. You don't "turn around" a losing trend by continuing to lose.

I've never seen more interest in sales numbers, for a console, in all of my life. MS would love to sell more, but the fact that they are where they are at this point is good enough for the meantime.

The Xbox One will continue to sell at a good pace, plain and simple. Maybe not as well as the PS4 but at least enough to have a pretty good size install base.

I'd expect the Xbox One will move a ton of units right before, during, and after the MCC is launched.

Oh man you ain't lying! I have 130,000+ on Xbox, level 15 or higher on Sony. I really wish Nintendo has some kind of reward system also I'm going for all the gold kart items on Mario kart would be cool to get some recognition for it.

Wow! Congrats, I have almost 70,000 achievements all gained without xboxlive gold, just can't stand online gaming. For PS3/4 I'm only lvl 7 in trophies.

On point... impossible to say if this is good in comparison to other consoles just given NPD's aren't out unitl tomorrow. Certainly more than doubling last month can't been seen as anything but good given how rough last month was. The key from here will be seeing how it paces with July and August months. Sept to December will certainly get better given its the holiday time frame, but June to August are tough months.

Anyway, good to see the bump. Hopefully Nintendo also gets a good bump. Would be nice to see all 3 home consoles once again showing strong numbers.

For sure. I haven't owned a Nintendo system since the N64. That was mainly due to being younger, and broke. I've owned every Playstation, and the past two Xbox systems. I'm looking to make it all three this gen. The issue now isn't so much money as it is time. It would be difficult for me to truly get quality time on all three systems.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you get pay checks from MS or Sony..Me either..so guess what...these articles are pointless really...if the numbers for the X1 are low, then its Uh Oh XBox is doomed articles galore, if they are quite good then its somehow turned around into a bad thing. The numbers dont matter to most gamers/people, only the chosen few that decide that 8 months into each consoles life the numbers are a sign of life or death.

I know a lot of fanboys won't look at X1 objectively but if you look at X1 since its little fiasco of announcements and changes last summer they have done a great job of turning it around and re-focusing on gamers...

The dashboard updates have been full of quality and quantity... In particular being able to put marketplace content on an external drive, Skype snapping, and the new achievement snap app are huge for gamers.

Also, on games content. Yes, there aren't as many games on X1 the competitor but that is mostly about Indie titles. If you look at "new" content meaning games that are either new IPs or all new stories on existing IPs X1 is a very strong offering.

And for the rest of 2014 it looks like MS' game library is strong... I know other companies want to talk about 2015, but we are still in 2014 and it matters. Sunset Overdrive, Project Spark, Forza Horizon 2, Dance Central, Disney Fantasia, and Killer Instinct Season 2 are all solid offerings.

In the end the only people that lose out are the people that can't see that X1 is now a solid offering.

Sony had numerous fiascos on the PS3/PS4 yet people came back and played it. I don't see why they wouldn't do the same with XB...

- The 180 on home
- The 180 that the cell was capable of games with 120 fps
- The 180 on vapourware announcements like Ni-oh, Eyeidentity, Fifth Phantom Saga, Killing Day, Eight Days, Last Guardian, and The Agent
- The 180 on Move this generation
- The 180 on Drive club day/night cycles
- And how is the usage of that touch pad on the new DS4 controller? Its only a matter of time before it is removed

RRoD... I had three 360's die over the course of the past generation (all three RRoD in about 2006-07). And I had three PS3's die over the course of the generation (One YRoD, one from a firmware update, and one that just wouldn't do anything when turned on). Also, people like to make a big deal about RRoD, but MS replaced all of my RRoD consoles within days with no issues. Sony refused to fix or replace my last that just wouldn't do anything when powered on.

DLC was on its way long before MS came around. Sony, has DLC too. If they were so anti-DLC why did they incorporate it to PS3? Honestly, I think this was more of a publisher thing then an MS thing. It was designed to curb used game sales which publishers want to see happen.

All console accessories from the console vendors are ridiculously priced. Controllers, remotes, headphones, etc. This is not unique to MS. What was unique was that MS forced a specific HDD on 360. And 360 initially did not have wireless built in.

But, MS has one-upped Sony for the HDD as they support putting an external drive on X1 that can have marketplace game content. Sony only supports game saves on external drives.

Also MS one-upped Sony on wireless. PS3 only had G wireless but when MS included theirs they included N.

As for stuff that wouldn't exist had it not been for Sony...

Let's talk about what XB brought to the table...

Online in/cross game chat
Built in WiFi N (Sony only had G on PS3)

PS: MS had a HDD in their console before Sony. F2P was not invented by Sony. If you go back MS did have the first console F2P which was Hexic and Doritos Crash Course.

I'm not hurt at all... I own a PS4, Wii U, and X1... So every game you can play on your PS4 I can (and I do) play as well. I just think other gamers should experience all of the consoles because they are all good. Fanboys like to slam MS, but, X1 gamers know that MS is doing a great job with X1.

Anyhow, what your post points to more than anything is that competition in the industry is good and a strong Nintendo, Sony, and MS presence has pushed gaming forward.

The original xbox had a built in Harddrive... How can you credit Sony for that one? You credit Sony for games with gold, but PS+ only exists because PSN was getting owned by Xbox live... Also PSN only exists because of Xbox live did it first.

Sorry again how has Sony's YLOD anything close to RROD?! There is a huge disparity in defective units and they fixed your system because they had to not out of the goodness of their hearts. $150 hard drives and $100 wifi adaptor is just gouging.

For example what has Kinect done to prove it's worth $100? Where is this super immersive killer app? It's barely used for gaming and all I hear is praises about non game related features which while great has not proven it's useful for actual games.

I will own a Xbone when there's more games I'm interested in. I can't justify dropping $400 to play Quantum Break.

In what other business model is being in second place, or third considered being doomed\in trouble? Even it was third place out of three. Ford sells the most trucks every single year, yet other manufacturers continue to have success in the truck market. I understand a larger install base leads to more dev support. The Xbox One would have to be absolutely abysmal sales wise before third party devs pulled the plug, or suspended support like we've seen Ubisoft and other devs begin to do with the Wii U. That is nowhere near happening. The moment multi-plats begin to skip the Xbox One is when you could call it doomed. The game industry\market is big enough to support all three.

What people aren't seeing is the fact that it isn't the Kinectless sku that has doubled sales. Have they had any promotions/offers running recently for any of the bundles? In the UK the Titanfall bundle was heavily discounted for a large amount of time in June.

More console sales for the XB1 means more people buying video games. While they are in second place it doesn't mean very much as long as the multiplatform games are made for both consoles. The differences in sales numbers will not be made up in a few months, but forward growth and momentum which the post shows the XB1 currently has is a step in the right direction.
