Many popular gaming YouTube channels have popped up over the past few years on topics like reviews, news, “Lets Plays”, strategies, and live-action skits. Time that people are using to watch someone play a videogame could be spent enjoying that same experience first-hand. However, Youtubers are exposing gamers and average individuals to gaming in a new way and spreading the word on games that might not previously receive attention. Ultimately, is this new way of participating in games good or bad for the industry?

Wasn't this touted as a feature of Stadia previously and never came to fruition? I swear I remember a whole thing about "watching a youtuber play Assassins Creed? Just hit the embedded play button and immediately jump to exactly where they are in the game!"
google should be more focusing on their google play games to function on pcs already.
i dont wanna wait any longer haha
Makes sense. Youtube is...a very big platform and been around very long lol. If I could go to a game streaming tab on my youtube app instantly, that'd be cool honestly.
Another day and another Retro Arcade vs Retro Console video.
How did Battlezone convert to home console? Vector graphics were next to impossible to create on the the consoles from the 80's. So we take a look on how they did it and if it was successful.
Playing is my preference, of course. But watching is free entertainment. Achievement Hunter is pretty good IMO.
I love playing but the main reason I like watching others play is to see what they think of what they're experiencing. Same reason I can never get tired of watching many videos of people reviewing and analyzing games.
I only watch games that I have beaten(speedruns), games that spread across multiple platforms(Dream Drop Distance), or games that have extremely low scores.
I used to avoid Youtube because I was preoccupied with gaming. But now my time is split between gaming and these gaming videos. A lot of them are just fun to watch and listen too. So much so I haven't watched any TV in years(my viewing taste branched to other topics besides gaming).
I also "study" these videos. I paid close attention in particular the use of language to convey a particular point or topic. These observations helped me greatly when doing assignments for my friends and I'm planning to embark on my own further studies soon.
Play for sure.
I don't get how people can legitimately just watch someone else play a game. If it's a fairly short, story-heavy game that you don't have funds to buy but still want to experience that story I could understand watching versus playing. But things like "Let's Play" videos that go for hours and hours? I don't know how (or why) someone would watch all that.
I'll check out a couple minutes of a LP or two on YouTube if I want to get an idea of what a certain game is like. To see if it's something I might like before buying, but that's it.
