Could The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Be The Next Skyrim?

Hardcore Gamer: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was one of the biggest western RPGs ever released. It sold tens of millions of copies worldwide, and swept many Game of the Year awards back in 2011. With the next proper Elder Scrolls game years away (setting aside the MMO), role-playing gamers are left with a growing wanderlust and nothing to quench it. While many RPG developers have tried to craft a living open world, most have fallen tragically short. One series has managed to achieve similar acclaim, though, and its latest outing introduces a world brimming with possibilities.

So true.
As others ha e stated, the Witcher is the Witcher and I'm looking forward to it.

gaffyh3576d ago

Skyrim was a lot more accessible than The Witcher 1 and 2, which is why it sold so well. Witcher 3 looks to be taking some of the better aspects of Skyrim, and I am actually looking forward to the changes they've made, as it looks like it plays a hell of a lot better.

joab7773576d ago

Me too. I want a game with a good story, less glitches and difficulty. Choice is great too. What sense does it make to be able to level every skill to 100x and be the leader of ever guild.

Hopefully its alot better!

JsonHenry3576d ago

Same here. The Witcher story, combat, and world is so much better (IMO anyway) than anything the Elder Scrolls has given us.

To be fair though, I do feel that every E.S. game has been better than its predecessor so it might change one day. But for now I would choose Witcher 3 over Skyrim any day of the week.

anticlimax3576d ago

Oblivion better than Morrowind? I had more fun with Morrowind than Skyrim and Oblivion combined. They should've never cut the levitate-skill.

JsonHenry3576d ago

Levitate? You would have loved Daggerfall then.

But no, I think the game mechanics/world/story is getting better with each game. Though I do, as you said, miss certain things like becoming a wereboar, scaling walls and levitate skills.

Bigpappy3576d ago

Morrowind is still the best Elder Scrolls ever made (My opinion). Everything else since has been watered down with a bunch of hand holding and simplifications so people don't cry that they have a sword and can get pass the rat. Or they were told to go North East to find a cave and keep having to pay bandits and run away from tribes men. There were too many of those barn birds though. In Skyrim they turned in to Dragons. Just not as many.

To this day I'm still confused as to why in Skyrim between one guild and the other there's no connection at all I could literally kill the emperor and still heralded as heroes by his army later, while in the other series by the same company, Fallout, there's such a nice connection between factions that everything we do has its consequences.

No. Why do people always compare games now.

The Witcher is its own entity and with a masterpiece like Withcer 2 we can look forward to The Witcher 3 being fantastic.

I'm hoping for better than that.

ninjahunter3576d ago

Well, theres a key difference, and CD Projekt has said this before. Skyrim is your adventure, you are dohvakin, The witcher is Geralts tale, Geralt is not you, he has his own character, personality and traits.

Not that that means much to most people, but for some immersion junkies its worth noting.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave19d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan19d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name43d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno43d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood43d ago (Edited 42d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno42d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure42d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
