Video Games and Marijuana Use: Does One Encourage the Other?

With the recent release of the next-gen platforms, PS4 and Xbox One, and with the announcement of new installments of worldwide smash hit franchises like Call of Duty, gaming really is here to stay. Video games are not specific to one age range, and are enjoyed by people of all ages, but teenagers and young adults are one of the key demographics. And, naturally, there is a subset of that group who also enjoy the recreational use of drugs such as cannabis – and it’s not unusual to find groups enjoying both marijuana and video games at the same time. This may beg the question, then: does one encourage the other? Let’s find out.

100% of my friends who do use recreational drugs started on their own terms just to "fit in" with the crowd. Peer Pressure is one hell of a tool.

GarrusVakarian3569d ago (Edited 3569d ago )

I'm sorry, but your friends sound like weak-minded idiots. Weed should never be smoked to "fit in", it should be smoked if you, and only you, want to smoke it. I have a friend who would constantly say no every time we offered him some, then eventually he said yes and enjoyed it...he did it on his own terms, not just to be "socially accepted".

And to answer the article, getting high might make you want to play a videogame (so much fun, i *highly* recommend it), but videogames don't make you want to start doing drugs, lol. I don't sit there and think "oh man, that game of CoD makes me want to roll a fatty and get wasted".

Codewow3569d ago

Sounds like you guys inadvertently pressured him into it. And I agree my friends are weak-minded idiots when it comes to that. They have wasted thousands of dollars on it and have nothing saved up to support their future. So they're all around stupid... well up until most of them split ways after high school. Then life caught up to them.

Bigpappy3569d ago

You just called him out then proved his points. Had that guy not have you as friends, he may never have touched the drug and be quite contented with that. Not saying he is not at fault, but he gave in due to you guys making him comfortable with the idea. I have friends who smoke, but as soon as they pull the herb out I wish the well a politely move on. They don't offer me any because I am not ambiguous about my position on that. I put my heath above all else and would easily end friendships to protect it. Friends are supposed to respect each other.

GarrusVakarian3569d ago (Edited 3569d ago )

@ codewow

"Sounds like you guys inadvertently pressured him into it."

Lmao, no. Please don't make judgements on me and my friend circle based on your own idiotic friends, please. We didn't push the blunt in his face every time we smoked and say "CMOOOON just one hit, you'll love it!"...we asked "you wanna try it?", and he simply said "no". Then one day he said "yeah, aright then, I'll try it". He's an adult, he makes his own decisions, he wasn't "pressured" into jack shit.

@bigpappy

What point did i prove? He said his friends started through peer *pressure*, that's not how my friend started. Peer pressure is not the same as offering a choice. Sure, if he didn't have us for friends then he might not have ever started smoking....but why is that a good thing? He enjoyed it, the drug is great, life is good. Lol.

How many of y'all smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol (two things i never do)? Make sure you aren't being hypocritical before commenting about weed, fellas.

PeaSFor3568d ago

to me smoking a blunt is like drinking beers, its recreational.

Gozer3568d ago (Edited 3568d ago )

Weed is less harmful to your health than drinking or smoking cigarettes. Being high doesn't lead to violent crime either, like alcohol does.

I smoked weed socially in the beginning, videogames had nothing to do with it.

However, I love to get high and play videogames now. Its like the one thing that can make a fun game even more fun. After you get used to weed, it can actually make you play even better. I have no idea why, but you can become so focused that you go into what I can only describe as a "zone".

Lol, I just read the article, am I the only person that thinks the author was high when he wrote it? A lot of errors in his write up.

GarrusVakarian3568d ago

@Gozer

"However, I love to get high and play videogames now. Its like the one thing that can make a fun game even more fun."

We have disagreed on many occasions, but this we can agree on.

MASTER_RAIDEN3568d ago

For me personally, video games arent the first thing i go to after toking. most of the games we love to play require really great timing and precision which i just waaay too difficult for me while blazed. id much rather spend a few hours watching stoner cartoons on adult swim or walking my dog.

either way i totally agree. im a pretty regular smoker myself but a lot of times when i just dont feel right about smoking up, i just pass it along without thinking twice. simple as that.

@Codwow: no offense man but youre way off. most of people I KNOW smoked weed for their first time because they wanted to know what weed was like. NOT because some kids pressured them into it like all the anti-drug commercials would have you believe. I'm sorry that you were once associated with such weak minded people, but rest assured that millions of people out their smoke marijuana simply because thats what they love doing.

i think my favorite part was when you actually tried to imply that those crazy stupid stoners got whats coming to them and that "life caught up".
LMAO. Bro. there are probably millions of people in high paying professional career feilds that smoke weed on an at least occasional basis. Life is not an anti-drug commercial. wake up.

for the record, im not endorsing anyone use pot for any reason.

sinspirit3568d ago (Edited 3568d ago )

"I have a friend who would constantly say no every time we offered him some, then eventually he said yes". - Lukas_Japonicus.

How is that not peer pressure? Peer pressure is giving in to a consistent push from others to do something. It doesn't matter if it's shoving it in their face or not. You offered it to him, all as his friends, several times and he had no interest in it. Of course he would likely eventually give into it. He already had a choice. He chose not to do it, and after you guys kept bugging him about it as his group of friends he thought he should just go ahead and try it, and he changed that choice.

Good for you for not trying to force it onto him, but you should just leave him out of it and not try to bring him into it by asking him so much. That is definitely a form of peer pressure.

elhebbo163568d ago

damn lukas why you so passive aggressive, we get it smoking weed is up to you.

AntoineDcoolette3568d ago

As someone who smokes I don't want to play video games or read when I'm high; it takes me out of my element. I just want to listen to music or watch tv/movie/anime

Arkardo3567d ago

@AntoineDcoolette

Totally agree with that, I don't know how some people can play competitive video games or do something that requires heavy brain to locomotive response when high, as you said see music videos or listening to music, Anime is such a great idea.

ShinMaster3567d ago

You don't have to say stereotypical things like "CMOOOON just one hit, you'll love it!" that you see in PSA ads to call it peer pressure.

If he constantly said no, it's because you were constantly asking him until he eventually gave in. That can be technically called peer pressure. It doesn't have to be aggressive.

Larry L3567d ago

The real problem with weed and video games is a pretty big one. It's that I like to be high when I play my games, but games kill my high. Playing Gran Turismo online for example, I'm burning half a bowl between each race. I just go through too much weed when I'm gaming. It's an issue.

Weed isn't a drug, it's a plant. It grows, and you smoke it. That's all, plus it has very beneficial effects as well and helps bring down pain levels without the use of actual drugs. It's why they prescribe medical marijuana to some people going through a lot of pain.

sinspirit3568d ago

It is a drug. This is a medical fact. If you think because it isn't mixed with anything or not in prescription bottles that it's not you're dead wrong.

Drug - a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.

It's the same crap people used to say that "Weed is illegal because the government can't put a tax on it!". I've heard that crap so many times from people that try to justify to me that it should be legal. I don't think it should be illegal. I think it's perfectly fine if you're responsible or if you actually have medical issues to take it. But, keep it away from me and keep your dumb theories to yourselves.

Tetsujin3568d ago

I've played video games since the 80s, and I don't smoke or drink, or sometimes even eat (using the bathroom is the most I'll do depending on the game). Getting that next level/mission complete is more important than "boy, I could smoke one right now..." Of course I take breaks to eat/drink or other real life responsibilities, however while I'm playing a game that comes first outside an emergency.

I also know some drinkers/smokers, and while I don't judge, what they do is their business, video games or not.

TheSaint3568d ago

Fallout and weed, is there anything better?

mixolydian_id3568d ago

Weed...

I used to smoke and play video games...

I kicked the weed and still play video games...

They're two separate addictions!

This article is almost as bad as saying "I smoke weed when I drive a car... therefore they're both related"

IrishSt0ner3567d ago

I've seen peer-pressure in action many times with other kids, personally with me it was always about expermentation (first cigarette was by myself).

OT, absoute BS there is little to no relation. I first smoked with friends, and mostly not at home. Now years later, I'll smoke when I'm gaming or watching a movie/show, as entertainment does feel enhanced in every way, and you're far more engrossed IMO.

THC no recorded deaths in all history. Alcohol is the 2nd largest killer below tobacco. Says it all really. Weed FTW.

TooHigh2Die3567d ago

Its safer than alcohol or cigs and makes gaming 10 times better IMO. Could I chug 10 beers and dominate a match in Destiny? Hell no..But could I smoke a few bowls and calm my nerves and perform even better def yes....

jc123567d ago

couldn't agree more man! I love toking up and then playing BF4. For some reason, my focus and intensity is much better when im high. Personally, I feel like being high makes a game seem more visceral and realistic.

I don't smoke. Played videogames for over 30 years. Never did any drugs either, but I am not here judging people. To each his own. If people want to dope themselves that is their right as long is it doesn't lead to them harming or forcing the effects on someone else.

So have your ganja, cigarettes, coke or whatever floats your boat. Just keep it to yourself and others who care to indulge. Blowing it in my face or impacting my personal comfort could lead to violence and who know what that outcome would be.

AgentSmithPS43568d ago

I've played Battlefield with many types of drug users and while it is sometimes comical it doesn't make me want to do any. Recently I played with a Latino that was drunk and doing lines of coke on mic, lots of snot related sounds and energy.

I used to play with a funny doped up redneck, he was only ok at BF but the dope gave him super powers in Dark Souls games.

A funny paranoid pot headed black ghillie wearing sniper guy was the most entertaining, he was surprisingly motivated but lacked the ability to work as a team. He was often found running up to armored vehicles, tossing C4 on them, and blowing himself up too, furry-body ragdolling wonderfully away from the armor.

Immorals3568d ago

Been smoking for 8 years, never once has a video game even remotely made me feel the urge to get high.

Infact, most of the time I just play peggle, or watch something on tv/Netflix when I'm high

Knightofelemia4h ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄
