PS4 Vs. Xbox One: EA Weighs In On Which Console Will Dominate This Holiday Season

Since the launch of Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4 last November, Sony’s current-gen device has remained in the lead in sales, with a cool 7 million units sold as of April. But the real battle for gaming supremacy lies just ahead, the all-important holiday shopping season.

It turns out a competitive console war is a good thing for game developers.

JBSleek3578d ago

What about Wii U? I think they are coming out with the best exclusive game this holiday season which will no doubt sell millions and make many people buy the system.

It would matter to EA if they cared about the Wii U.

jaredhart3578d ago

You answered your own question. EA doesn't like Nintendo.

Now it could all change if the Wii U continues to do better.

johndoe112113578d ago (Edited 3577d ago )

Allow me to sum up the article for everyone who just doesn't feel like clicking on the link:

It turns out a competitive console war is a good thing for game developers especially for EA who just loves to pocket rape the gaming community.

"I think it's going to be a great fight in the holiday. And as a third-party publisher who would sell their soul for a dollar, we sit right in the sweet spot, that spot between your wallet and your bank account" Electronic Arts Chief Operating Officer Peter "I want" Moore told WinBeta on Sunday.

"Consumers love it as well, and it's good for the industry aka E.A" Moore said. "You need powerful companies like Sony and Microsoft to be battling out with each other because it drives investment in their platforms and tons of cash from the hungry gaming community straight into our pockets. It drives competition. You want to see Nintendo come back with the Wii U, well at least you do, us, we don't give a damn about them. They can't make us money. All in all, it becomes healthy for our pockets ..uh..I meant gamers, and for our investors...uh...I meant the environment. When you have a runaway winner, that actually has a reverse effect."

Last year, Sony’s PS4 hit store shelves one week earlier than the Xbox One on Nov. 15. The PS4 was also priced at $100 cheaper since the Xbox One came bundled with the Kinect.

Last month, Microsoft made the console available without the Kinect for $399 -- the same price of the PS4.

Nintendo’s Wii U launched in 2012 and its sales recently picked up due to the popularity of racer “Mario Kart 8, still, that won't be enough for E.A to evn consider making a game or two for them” The Wii U differs from the PS4 and Xbox One due to its backward compatibility with previous generation Wii games and the fact that E.A. actually makes games for those systems. Its popular 3DS handheld is also compatible with older DS games.

Moore said EA plans to keep churning out titles for last-gen systems Xbox 360 and PS3 because the fanbase is huge there and they can rape customers out of more money on those consoles.

"The hope is we get a decent tail of two or three years, and we'll continue to make games for those platforms as long as fans buy them even if the games are unfinished and full of microtransactions. And if not we'll just use our "go to" plan and start charging for demos" he added.

"What PlayStation did with the PS2 was a wonderful tail. I was at Microsoft and we kind of buried the Xbox quickly because to be blunt, it was just losing money. We stopped making games for it ourselves and stopped manufacturing it because the view was, 'Let's move to Xbox 360. Let's get there quickly, establish a beachhead before the PlayStation 3 came out,' and that certainly worked well in that generation. That's why I adopted the same mentality for E.A., totally screw up loved franchises then abandon them when they don't makes us at least 300% profit. You could argue maybe the tables have been somewhat turned in this generation.”

Eonjay3577d ago

What about the fact that former Microsoft. Head Peter Moore doesn't actually answer the question the title insists.

SilentNegotiator3577d ago (Edited 3577d ago )

Wii U won't dominate this holiday, plain and simple.

Mario Kart 8 was arguably their biggest game of the year (MK sold ~3x as much as SSB on Wii) and it only gave Wii U a short lived boost above the xbone (never even matching ps4's sales).

ShinMaster3577d ago (Edited 3577d ago )

It's not that EA doesn't like Nintendo. They just don't like the Wii U.

@ johndoe11211

Exactly, people are buying Wii U for games like Mario Kart. They're not buying Wii U for third-party/multiplatform games.

What about Wii U? The Wii U is not going to dominate this holiday season.

Are you crazy? You people are really that oblivious aren't you?

The Wii U and Xbox One are fighting for a silver medal, cause the general public doesn't want either of them on a mass level.

http://cmemes.com/wp-conten...

What did people actually think was going to happen?

JBSleek3578d ago

You truly are the worse type of person...

MRMagoo1233578d ago

@jb

the worst type of person ? so they are worse than murderers ? rapists ? bit of a personal attack there I think myself. I mean you can dislike them if you want , I mean most people do dislike the people that have facts to back them up because they cant argue against facts so they just attack them, but saying they are the worst type of person is kinda overboard.

OT: Looking at what PC,Xbone, PS4 and WIIu have this holiday coming out, seems to me like we all win no matter what no matter what platform you prefer to enjoy.

No_Limit3578d ago (Edited 3578d ago )

WOW, maria...your hate for xbox is growing stronger by the hours. Let it go girl and go out an walk in the park for a while. It is ok, it is only videogames..unless you actually works for the company you are supporting or got fired by the company that you keep bashing, there is no need for all that hate.

OT, I think EA will sell the most on PS4 simply because it has a larger user base but the XB1 will still be a viable platform for them and will continue to be in the long run.

NatureOfLogic_3578d ago

WiiU is tracking ahead Xbox One on Amazon. WiiU will still have second place this holiday season. I think the story this year will be Xbox One vs WiiU for second place. WiiU is not giving up second place so easily.

Are you seriously trying to say that someone making a troll comment on a game website is worse than a murderer, rapist, child molester and Hitler? That someone who doesn't like the wii-u is the worst type of person in the world. You crack me up.

GordonKnight3577d ago

When you say general public do you mean brainless sheep that only use the media to research their console purchase? Wait a minute Nintendo has had good press since E3 maybe not on N4G. So it could happen.

True

>which will no doubt sell millions and make many people buy the system.

Wrong, sadly

JBSleek3578d ago

You think Super Smash Bros won't sell millions and also be a system seller?

rdgneoz33578d ago

Sadly true. Nintendo always has good exclusives. Only problem they have is multiplats. In the next 6 months, no Destiny, Far Cry 4, Shadow's of Mordor, Batman, Evolve, AC: Unity, etc. They'll get some good sales when Smash Brothers comes out, but people are gonna want more than a few games.

LamerTamer3577d ago

Are people really into arena fighting games still? I thought that fad died down years ago and has mostly become a niche.

SilentNegotiator3577d ago (Edited 3577d ago )

"You think Super Smash Bros won't sell millions and also be a system seller?"

Sure, it'll sell and get some (mostly) hardcore Nintendo fans to finally buy the system. But why don't you take a look at how Gamecube sold; exclusives that sold okay in the short run and a lot in the long run, weak third party support, no waggle to grab the casuals...

I believe the console which will have over a 2:1 sales gap will dominate the holiday season. Duh.

Is that really even a question? It's like asking who would win in a boxing match: Muhammad Ali, or an elderly monkey (and we are to assume Ali has no ethical dilemma about punching old monkeys that may or may not have the ability to hear or see very well).

Malphite3577d ago

Nintendo has finally started to focus on the Wii-U and I definately agree that their upcoming exclusive line-up is quite strong however it is not only competing with the other consoles exclusives but almost with their whole games lineup (exclusives + multiplayer).

That's probably the reason why the Wii-U is viewed as a secondary choice by a lot of gamers. Most people won't pass on games like Destiny, The Witcher, Metal Gear Solid V, Batman: AK, Far Cry 4, The Division, GTA and so on.

Whatever system sells the most of their games is the one the dominates.

BitbyDeath3578d ago

"Moore said EA plans to keep churning out titles for last-gen systems Xbox 360 and PS3.

"The hope is we get a decent tail of two or three years, and we'll continue to make games for those platforms as long as fans buy them," he added."

----------------------------- ---

Dammit EA, two to three years is a long time for more cross-gen garbage.

JBSleek3578d ago

You just want them to simply abandon 160 million users?

BitbyDeath3578d ago

Yes. Consoles aren't PC's, they don't need to be dragged down by old systems.

ITPython3577d ago

Do you want them to keep supporting last-gen for as long as it takes this gen to reach 160 million users? It could be at least 6 years for that to happen, which would mean 6 more years of games being gimped on next-gen consoles due to last-gen versions holding developers back and taking up WAY too much of their time (when that time could be better spent polishing a games graphics/story/multiplayer/etc on current-gen consoles, thus making a MUCH better experience and a MUCH better game overall).

Once next-gen comes out, last gen is done for. That is just how it works. There is PLENTY of games on the last-gen consoles for them to enjoy, and when they want to enjoy the newest games with better graphics/performance, then they make the jump to current-gen. It is the natural flow of console gaming, always has been and always should be.

I am really hoping devs will finally be done with last-gen by 2015. The hardware will be 9 years old by then and it will be time to move on. Next-gen sales are good, but if devs would abandon last-gen once and for all, that "160 million users of last-gen" would quickly turn into "160 million users on next-gen... plus lots more".

JBSleek3578d ago

Not quite sure how your PC comment makes sense but okay.

BitbyDeath3578d ago

PC devs are required to support old and new PC's hence the comment.

Every gen before this one never had so much emphasis on cross-gen games.

Sure they can make individual games for the old systems but there is no need to make the same game for both. Why even have new consoles if devs just want to keep rehasing lastgen games on them?

wsoutlaw873577d ago

it makes a ton of sense. If pc devs only had to worry about the highest end pcs, then pc games would like a crazy amount better and actually perform as their specs suggest.

JBSleek3578d ago

I understand what you are saying. I just simply disagree with the premise of it, business wise and simply that last generation shouldn't simply be written off.

3577d ago
wsoutlaw873577d ago

I dont think its bad to support ps3/360, but come on ea, at least try to make the next gen versions actually better. It would be nice if they were developed separately but that would cost more money.

Tetsujin3577d ago

@IT

I agree to a point however disagree overall with your statement. While previous gen can hinder a current gen it also depends on what games are available and what's under contract. One could argue Watch Dogs being better had it been next gen only, while others argue it sucked regardless because of all the hype the game received and underdelivered.

I commend companies keeping previous gen around (especially Sony with the PlayStation). You also have to keep in mind there's fans that keep previous gen for various reasons (main being financial reasons), so no I'm not as upset or even care; since I keep both previous gen and next gen together. Now something from NES to SNES, yes that would be a big jump, and SNES to even N64 it was a jump. Something like Wii to Wii U at the beginning I don't see the upset honestly (just a personal perspective); PS3 and PS4 at the beginning no, over time I can see someone being upset; 360 to One same thing.

EA Hopes to Use Generative AI to Drive Monetization and Make Development 30% More Efficient

Today Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson provided a look into his ideas for the use of generative AI in the company's development processes.

peppeaccardo47d ago

i have a better idea .. why the whole exec team doesn't get replaced by chat bots ?

just_looken47d ago

Though i agree the ai thing is already in other forms of media there have been ai translations/scripts/voice over and even full ai commercials aired on tv. Ubisoft has created a ai game creator story/vo/music except the building of the game

The new unreal engine has auto terrain creation tools

In the world of greed in which it is winning without any major blow back ai is our future.

everyone want's biden dead on the mic or a criminal instead of a woman and now we are getting ai everything because no one will stop watching/playing ai created media.

GamerRN47d ago

Maybe they should just focus on making good games?

Just a thought...

Kiryu199246d ago

Exactly EA are just pure evil. When they are beating Bank of America to be voted the worst company to work for that’s saying a lot

Good thing I don’t buy their games day one and wait for deep deep sale years after launch (the select few games I am actually interested in)

Gaming is making so much money yet the greed of these companies is never ending

CEO’s and people on board making millions yet cutting jobs to those who are actually making the products

EA is still a shady shitty company even with or without the help of Skynet. All they will use AI for is new ways to milk loot boxes and come up with the same sports title with a different year on the label. They are one company I truly do hate with a passion. They single handedly ruined some great franchise with their death touch. ME, Dead Space, Alice Returns, Dante's Inferno.

EA layoffs followed by 'Generative AI to Drive Monetization'

I knew it. Wonder what AI salary looks like? Nothing.

ChasterMies47d ago

I having a feeling that most of the layoffs in the industry are based on the idea that AI will do the same job for less.

DarXyde46d ago

Very likely, yes.

Made worse by the fact that the execs aren't changing their compensations.

My deepest fear at this point is that we are now in the capitalism endgame.

At this point, we really should just burn AI to the ground. Executives cannot be trusted to do the right thing.
How are those people expected to support families if everything gets automated?

Barlos47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

And take away creativity, and people's jobs as we've been seeing. Got it.

No thanks. I want my games created by people, not AI.

CobraKai47d ago

Exactly. If or when games start becoming more AI than people, im done with gaming. AI and companies like EA can suck donkey d***k.

just_looken47d ago

Though i agree remember this is no ps3/360 era were we got up to 3 games in one generation from on developer like gears/halo/bioware/sony/ms

The people today are pro esg/sweet baby for the most part AAA gaming is imploding right now.

We should be stepping back re evaluate everything as a whole this year xmen 97 written/directed by a woman that is nuts and its also being made by a group reshaping bodies to be less sexual like wtf. A dam famous cartoon from the 90's is being rebuilt with millions spent to be worse in everyway.

Gaming/movies/tv shows made today are worse than what we had 7years ago ai won't change this but that ai is also being made by these groups so either way we are screwed.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Eonjay46d ago

Don't be of afraid of women. Sexy characters in games and movies still exist. Got my Stellar Blade on preorder!!! Everything all the time doesn't need to be sexual...that's stupid, childish and dull.

Chocoburger47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

EA doesn't want to lose their title of worst gaming company ever, always trying their best to remain the champs!
What's sad is that they have so much potential to be a decent publisher.

SSX Tricky / SSX 3
Def Jam Vendetta / Fight for New York
NBA Street
NFL Steet
Mirror's Edge
Bad Company
Burnout 3 / 4 / 5

Remember when EA used to be awesome? It's all over with now. Unpolished, if not out-right broken games these days. Endless monetization and gambling in their sports games, and let's not forget wasting hours of your life trying to unlock characters or equipment using "surprise boxes!"

EA - Continuing to evolve our business and teams

EA CEO Andrew Wilson writes: "In this time of change, we expect these decisions to impact approximately 5 percent of our workforce. I understand this will create uncertainty and be challenging for many who have worked with such dedication and passion and have made important contributions to our company. While not every team will be impacted, this is the hardest part of these changes, and we have deeply considered every option to try and limit impacts to our teams. Our primary goal is to provide team members with opportunities to find new roles and paths to transition onto other projects. Where that’s not possible, we will support and work with each colleague with the utmost attention, care, and respect. Communicating these impacts has already begun and will be largely completed by early next quarter."

https://edition.cnn.com/202...

The greed and lack of transparency/oversight is disgusting.

Ups are still making bang but not enough for a golden boat fleet.

Remember we all use ups at some time even stuff in our stores this is going to be a huge issue gong forward i know in my area they removed half the state ups stores northern half least population got some 3rd party running packages now from minivans.

You do realize around this time this happens all throughout many industries (not just the game industry), right? It has to do with taxes for these major companies, like tax subsidies for downsizing. You want to know a little secret? Around May or so you’ll see a spike in hiring…

It blows my mind that people are oblivious to corporate workings.

Andrew33654d ago

So over 25 huge companies cut jobs every year like this and it only got noticed this time?

CrimsonWing6954d ago (Edited 54d ago )

@Andrew336

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Google it up if you’re uninformed of how corporations work. Only gamers seem to live in a bubble and when they see things like crunch, acquisitions, and lay-offs they act like this is the only industry it happens to and how shocked they are about it.

Welcome to the real world, kid.

thorstein54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

EA CEO Wilson's total compensation was 20 million. Let's take away 19 million (I'm sure he can survive on 1 million.... somehow).

1 million is the salary of an in the chair developer @100,000 for 10 years.

He could earn 1 million a year.

And save the jobs of 15 in the chair devs for A DECADE (plus benefits) with ONE YEAR'S compensation.

I heard Japan does it better, they do layoffs like what's happening with companies in the west. The higher ups also being agreeing to to lower there own salary. These MFs like jim and Phil isnt gonna do that they want that $

Sonic188154d ago

Like I said earlier, this is happening all around the gaming industry.
