Not really impressive considering how they used Mario and other characters twice. Why didn't Nintendo keep the baby charters as an alternate outfit? Waste of character slots in my opinion. On the bright side good to see that Koopa Troopa in the roster ;)

randomass1713663d ago

I think the babies all have different stats and karts. Thirty characters is a lot. I'm surprised you're complaining about that.

Neonridr3663d ago

@LOL_WUT - yes but in the Wii version those characters existed as well. Obviously they wanted to carry the baby characters over as in previous titles..

The roster grid is 6 x 6 = 36 characters.

DryBoneKoopa853663d ago

@Neon: It's 6x5 grid bud. So it is 30 characters.

I hope Dry Bones makes it back. If not that's ok too. Wonder who those three secret characters are going to be. Have a feeling it's Bowser Jr, Dry Bone's, and King Boo... Could be wrong though.

This is awesome. I mostly only use Mario anyways, but good to know there is a large selection.

Not sure how anybody can complain.

DaGamingKing3663d ago

This game is gonna be loads of fun. I hope you can power slide like in previous N64 version.

LKHGFDSA3663d ago

I imagine it'll play exactly like Mario Kart 7 considering how similar they look and sound. (the powersliding has changed since the N64 version)

Shnazzyone3662d ago (Edited 3662d ago )

I've played it, You absolutely can powerslide. It works precisely like mk7 but with some of the most precise motion controls to ever hit the series. At first I was like "aww I HAVE to use the wii pad like a steering wheel? That sucks!"

Suddenly I was in shock, it fucking worked and it worked incredibly. I decided to try doing with the wheel on the turns like I would to drift in MK7. Imagine my surprise when it worked EXACTLY HOW I WANTED IT TO.

Got First place on both the races I played (felt kinda bad for the kid I was playing against because of how hard I demolished him). This game couldn't come sooner... it's just beautiful. Before anyone asks, yes... 2 player ran at split screen at 60fps and seemingly 1080p. It was a sight to behold.

randomass1713662d ago

Guh, you're making me jealous. I need this game in my life lol.

Shadow Man3662d ago

What about 4 player split screen?

Shnazzyone3662d ago

@shadow they only did 2 player. However, I can understand why it'd have to dip after playing it. All the weapons, the beautiful and colorful tracks, the detailed character models. That speed. All rendered 4 times. Locking that at 30 fps at 1080p while being rendered 4 times is actually pretty damn impressive.

Beastforlifenoob3662d ago

Actually Mario Kart 8, Super mario 3d world are the games on the WII U that look good.

itsJoe3663d ago

Looks like 2 lightweights and 1 heavy. Perhaps Dry Bones & Diddy Kong for LW and then either Honey Queen or King Boo the heavy slot?

live2play3662d ago

You would think it makes sense at firs glance. I did to. But it doesnt. The way the roster is set up is weird

The very top line looks like medium weight but. Rosalina us a heavy weight and shes in that line up.

The heavy weight has a lightweight koopaling. And a heavy koopaling in the bottom

Yoshi and koopa troopa are in tje same line up but yoshi is a medium weight and troopa is lightweight

choujij3663d ago

Personally, I hope it controls similarly to their Mario Kart Arcade GP. I had the pleasure of playing that a few years back, and it was incredible.

DOMination-3662d ago

Thats in my local bowling alley and its a really awesome experience

Rockefellow3663d ago

I really do think the baby characters are worthless when considering some other neglected possible characters, but 30 is enough to satiate variety elsewhere. The inclusion of the Koopalings is still just awesome, and I'm hoping a few more left-field announcements are made.

Is love it if they launched with a few secret characters-- unlocking stuff is one of the most addicting parts of this game, so it'd be fantastic if they left one or two drivers completely secret. I doubt they will, but one can wish.

Oh, and hurry up and officially reveal my man Diddy. He's already practically confirmed, but official word would be nice.

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

there wont be a new one until the switch 2 comes out.

nintendo needs their bangers early on

The Next Mario Kart Desperately Needs A Good Gimmick

Mario Kart 8 has been out for nine years now if you include the Wii U version. Despite the Switch port continuing to sell insane numbers since it came out in 2017, many people believed that a new installment was way past due. When the Booster Course Pass was announced instead, it was a bit controversial, with one side of people stating that it was time for a new game, and the other side believing that this was the best course of action and that there's nothing else Nintendo can do to innovate the franchise.

There's nothing wrong with the games, but after most of them being very samey, I got a bit bored. I liked MKDS because it added a mission mode, yeah it didn't have maybe as many as I'd like but it was decent for variety.

I really prefer the new Mario Party for the different types of games in it.

Mario Kart doesn't really feel fresh because you know what to expect for every new game pretty much. The single player mode of DKR was far more in depth a game vs Mario Kart IMO, MK is probably better for multiplayer though.

-Foxtrot311d ago

It needs a campaign mode like Crash Team Racing with open hubs, driving around the Mushroom Kingdom, selecting your races and the like. Have a system like the CTR tokens within the races that then unlock secret racing cups later on or the time relics to unlock other things.

There's nothing wrong with the games but when you've had the same set up for so many games it just gets a bit samey after a while.

They could even have something like a track creator like Modnation Racers or something.

Neonridr310d ago

I always enjoyed the single player aspect of Diddy Kong Racing myself.

Knushwood Butt311d ago

After starting with the first game on SNES, I think the last one I bought was on the DS.

Phlacky310d ago (Edited 310d ago )

I think the next gimmick should be interactive tracks with obstacles and traps such as maybe throwing a shell ahead to make something fall on another player Also have water and mud parts that effect handling more also fire parts that can cause you to over heat if you stay in it to long etc...

Yi-Long310d ago (Edited 310d ago )

I don’t think it needs ‘a gimmick’ so much, because gameplay is pretty much perfect right now, but I would like the next Mario Kart to do either a ‘track-builder’ thing, so you just get access to the tools and make your own tracks (think Modnation Racers or LBP Karting), and/or expand upon ‘Mario’ Kart and open it up to the rest of Nintendo IPs, and just do a ‘Nintendo Kart’, so we’d see more of Zelda, but also Starfox, Kirby, Metroid, Valkyria Chronicles*, etc.

* I know, technically not ‘Nintendo’.
