PS4 firmware 1.70 to feature friends list fixes; may include game sorting option - rumour

PS4's latest firmware could include a much-touted game sorting option, as well as tweaks and fixes to the friends list.

Ninver3656d ago (Edited 3656d ago )

meh at this point first and foremost we need media playback capabilities and usb playback like the ps3. i have so many movies and music on my external hdd i can't even play.

KwietStorm_BLM3656d ago

I want that too, but I definitely wouldn't say first and foremost.

cleft53656d ago

I am happy to see them improving the online network in this fashion. Definitely a good sign and there is plenty of room for improvement.

Mr Pumblechook3656d ago

I'd like to be able to use my official PS3 remote with my PS4! I paid good money for it, it helps so much with Blu-ray playback and it should be pretty easy to implement.

tbone5673656d ago (Edited 3656d ago )

They really need to remove the light before I even consider a PS4. Really annoying. And add friend notifications just like Xbox Live.

G20WLY3656d ago

^Bone, did you not know Yoshida already confirmed there are options regarding the light coming in an update soon?

I guess you'll be considering a PS4 now... ;^P

thereapersson3656d ago

G20WLY

tbone is trolling with his anti-Sony nonsense, just like he does in every single one of his posts.

ZodTheRipper3655d ago

I'd rather have the share button fixed and a stable PSN, I need mah spaze for gamez.
My PC takes care of media playback.

thorstein3656d ago

This isn't a major update. Major updates usually have the main number changed. The next major firmware update will be 2.0.

ziggurcat3656d ago

actually, the .10 updates are major. the .01 updates are minor (often stability-related).

morganfell3656d ago

Try looking at the feature set. This may not be 2.0 but there are some top shelf items included.

I am not sure this will be on hold until next week. Some of the comments made by Sony today seem to indicate it might drop this week.

Bowzabub3656d ago

That's not necessarily true. 2 of the PS3's biggest updates were 1.80 & 2.40.

blackblades3656d ago

You can play them it's called having a ps3 hooked up.

Ninver3656d ago

well i do have my ps3 hooked up but i'd rather lay it to rest and focus on my brand new ps4.

Bathyj3656d ago (Edited 3656d ago )

I'm opposite, Id rather reduce wear on my PS4 and only use it for gaming and use my cheaper PS3 for media.

But yeah, I still think those features should be added, especially with the video/screen captures. Id like to dump them all all an external USB and watch them.

morganfell3656d ago

I have a Sony 65 inch 4K with the Sony 4K media server in my main room. I just plug the drive straight into the TV (or the 4K player) and it plays everything including MKVs. Or else I just start the PS3 media server in my computer room where I do recording on my second PS3 and second PS4. I have a 16TB Sans DIgital tower for storage in there and I just stream the media across my network and straight to the TV without turning on the PS3 or PS4 in the main room.

I am so looking forweard to being able to record hours of footage from the PS4 in the living room with just an external drive. Currently in order to record 1080p footage on the PS4 (or PS3) I have to split off the audio on the PS4 (or PS3) using Digital Optical out. I use a cable coming from the console that hase HDMI on one end and DVI on the other. That goes into an HDMI converter, recombines the Digital Optical out audio onto the HDMI stream and then that runs into a Avermedia recorder that does 1080p HDMI in recordings. The only issue with that is recordings are capped at 30fps.

Thehyph3656d ago

I need to have these features on ps4, but I will still use my ps3 for some things.

As a Canadian, my ps3 is dedicated to using an American DNS for Netflix purposes.

TitanUp3656d ago

i have a ps4 but no ps3.

Neonridr3655d ago

@Bathyj - streaming digital files over a DLNA does no wear to the PS4 system.

elninels3655d ago

@Morganfell

Ah geeze man just sh*t on my life some more.

"well i do have my ps3 hooked up but i'd rather lay it to rest and focus on my brand new ps4."

You can focus on playing games on your ps4, but movies and music you can still enjoy on ps3 not like it's going to be improvement.

Tempest3173656d ago

It may not be an improvement but it means he only needs 1 system plugged in instead of 2. So only one set of wires, only 1 set of controllers, no switching inputs. Much simpler and more efficient that way.

randomass1713656d ago

Honestly, it's refreshing just to see Sony updating the system period. All three systems keep making updates and now all three are way above how they were at launch.

candy_mafia3656d ago (Edited 3656d ago )

Read between the lines regarding MP3/Video USB playback....

Right or Wrong...

Sony wants us to use Video Unlimited/Music Unlimited. It's called running a 'business' folks! I'm sure (eventually) these features will come, but Sony is pushing their own priorities first.

Sony know we want it, some of you super awesome people want it & I want it too, but for now we gotta be patient using our PS3...for those who were smart enough to have kept the 'll beauty :)

#nobiggie

MRMagoo1233656d ago

Or use a pc like most other people in the world for the multimedia side , you can even hook it up to the same tv.

XisThatKid3656d ago

Not everyone has PC and/or a PS4 believe it or not.

PhilJowns3656d ago

@XisThatKid

Every PS4 owner had a PC to play Titanfall apparently! LOL! 😁

Rainstorm813655d ago

@Bathyj
It'll be nice to have it as a feature on ps4 im 100% for that, but he's acting like he can't even play his movies and music at all in his home.

Rockstar3656d ago

Don't forget 3d playback for those of us with 3d sets and BR movies!

psplova3656d ago

not sure how anyone could 'disagree' with this... I mean, whether you have 3D blu rays or not, having the option would be better than not having this option. I personally bought into the 3D blu ray thing and am glad I did, being a movie lover. Besides most 3D movie sets come with a standard, non 3D version, so you always have an option either way..

I would like to know if such an option (that is, being able to actually update the current blu Ray player inthe ps4, to beable to play 3D movies) is even doable..

Neonridr3655d ago

@steele311 - of course it can be updated. The PS3 wasn't 3D capable out of the box. It wasn't until firmware update 3.50 (which came out in September of 2010 - nearly 4 years after the launch of the system) that the console was updated to enable 3D bluray support.

Ron_Danger3655d ago

At least the PS4 plays 3D games though. The PS4 version of Zen Pinball 2 looks so much better than the PS3 version. Almost zero loss in graphics when playing in 3D.

Rainstorm813655d ago

Trine looks great as well in 3D on PS4

I just hope devs don't abandon 3D gaming, especially now when 3D sets are cheaper and console are more powerful

DragonKnight3656d ago

You have a computer that has a usb port and you're telling everyone that you can't play the movies and music on that external drive? What is stopping you?

Baka-akaB3656d ago (Edited 3656d ago )

I most of all love the "meh whatever" part , about fix and features actually impacting gaming , for the sake of something we can all already do on tv , media center , pc , tablets nd mobile phones .

Sure i want media capabilities , the sooner , the better , but it more important than friendlists , better captures and other IU upgrades ? No , of course those should be prioritized over such optional stuff

AstroCyborg3656d ago

the PS4 is a gaming console screw the media crap

TitanUp3656d ago

yeah i would rather them focus on updates that pertains to gaming, i think they could still add a couple of media features in each update.

thefarkingchamp3656d ago (Edited 3656d ago )

And need to support NTFS or exFat not the dreaded fat 32 format

Stapleface3656d ago

This^ fat 32 is just too limited when it comes to individual file sizes.

DOMination-3656d ago

PLEASE Sony can you fix the Problem in your system where it doesn't mute audio through the tv whilst using optical out.

MasterCornholio3656d ago

There should be an option for that. I hate having to turn off the sound in my monitor every time I plug my PS4 into it with my Trittons.

DOMination-3655d ago

There isn't currently an option for it. It's not the end of the world, just a bit annoying.

Knushwood Butt3656d ago

Remote Play just doesn't work for me, and I don't know why.

I suspect my wireless kit, but am banging my head against a wall trying to get it to work. So much so that I've almost given up trying.

Anyway, maybe this is related to my PS4/PS Vita, and maybe not..

Neonridr3655d ago

does your Vita not detect your PS4 at all? Does it connect but it runs very poorly? Your Vita and PS4 are connected to the same wireless network?

Knushwood Butt3655d ago (Edited 3655d ago )

They both connect via wireless - same wireless network. I can get them to connect, but then the connection will just drop after a short time, or I'll get some message on the Vita that the wireless speed is too slow for remote play to work properly. Pretty bizarre seen as it's a brand new, powerful wireless router, and the devices are only separated by about 10-15 meters.

Baccra173655d ago

I'm waiting for that myself. Not going to buy a system in a drought that cannot even do what my PS3 can.

Blaze9293655d ago

i can see how this is going to go now. Microsoft is pushing features and updates out to the Xbox One like they discovered a trojan horse every month.

Wont be long until the missing features wanted so badly on Xbox One are there. But for PS4, who knows how long the simplest software updates will take and what they will add. I mean, just look at the PS3's Software Update history.

Great hardware, but oh so lacking on the software front Sony. Honestly, priorities. Of all the things we are waiting for with PS4, game sorting im sure isn't up there in the top 5.

As for the, "Sony wants us to use Music/Video Unlimited" - maybe. They are a business afterall.

Clown_Syndr0me3655d ago

Exactly this. My PS4 currently feels like wasted potential. X1 has far more features that keep me busy for hours.

HugoDrax3655d ago (Edited 3655d ago )

I've posted this just a few days ago, and I agree with you.

Microsoft = Software Giants, this is their strength. Thus why they acquired Nokia to finally make decent hardware. As Microsoft stated a year ago "We have some of the best software developers in the world"

Sony = Hardware Giant! who makes aesthetically pleasing products, even attractive user interfaces. Although, their hardware rarely receives updated software improvements in comparison to computer software giant Microsoft.

That's just my opinion, some companies just do things better than the competition. On a side note, I think Apple does both (Hardware + Software) better than Sony and Microsoft.

+ Show (12) more repliesLast reply 3655d ago
1nsomniac3656d ago

+2 It just seems silly that an upgraded product would remove standard features that were in to begin with.

Until they fix the very basic foundations which we expect. There really is no point going further with silly things that no one cares about. All that does is aggravate the customer base.

Skate-AK3656d ago

I know a lot of people that will be happy when the studio suite comes out.

Majin-vegeta3656d ago

I'm as dumb as Lloyd but what is the studio suite??

Skate-AK3656d ago (Edited 3656d ago )

I was under the impression that it was an editing tool for your share videos. Like Microsoft Upload Studio. Can't seem to find any info on it now and it is gone from the article.

TitanUp3656d ago

playing ff14 without the metal and rock is killing me.

randomass1713656d ago

Did sony make any announcements regarding media updates at all?

TitanUp3656d ago

don't believe they have, think they only announced streaming stuff as the next update.

i could be wrong but i think i would remember them saying something about mp3 support

Iceman X3656d ago

Music Unlimited can do this.

UnwanteDreamz3656d ago (Edited 3656d ago )

I love that disagree. Music unlimited allows you to play all Sony owned music on any PS4 game. That is a fact.

Stapleface3656d ago

Should be called "Music Very Limited". I'm about to cancel my subscription. They don't have Rammstein. I need Rammstein sometimes when I'm playing certain games. There are certain songs that you just can't beat for destroying shit.

Soldierone3655d ago

Hate Music Unlimited. It is so clunky to use, and its a data hog when playing online. Plus it hardly ever functions. I've had several friends pay for a subscription, along with myself, and we all had the same problem. Almost all day during the week it will say "service unavailable" or have some error, then it will randomly quit while playing games etc....

Paid for two months, got maybe 1 day of it functioning properly, so I gave up.

MRMagoo1233656d ago

having you tried one of those weird machines out called a cd player yet? , they also have digital versions called MP3 players, if you dont like their sound dock it in speakers, or even put music on a pc with speakers. So many options to choose from but i guess some ppl forget.

Neonridr3655d ago

that's not an excuse for not having a basic feature. Almost every electronic device out there can play .mp3's

No excuse for not including something as basic as that. Some people actually like to do everything from one box. Makes life so much simpler.

Hammerwatch II Will Stop Dilly-Dallying and Head to Xbox and PS4 on April 23

"Hammerwatch II's journey to Xbox has been long and perilous. After first launching on Steam in the fall of 2023, the game finally turned up on PlayStation 5 last December.
