EA Goes Too Far With Harsh Wii-U Bashing April Fools Joke, Then Deletes It

T1 - April Fools is always played in good spirits in the video games industry, but this latest attempt by EA, which sees the company openly mocking the Wii-U on Twitter, comes across more spiteful than playful.

Dark113671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

lmao people getting upset over april fool joke.

So much salt.

clmstr3671d ago

This "april fool joke" is neither funny nor creative IMO.

truefan13671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

Lol that's what I'm saying, it is a big sob fest over a plastic console with computer chips, mind you on April fools day. Is it smart from a business standpoint, no, but you guys act like they insulted a person. Being an XBOX game for like 8 years i have heard a lot worse.

@But everyone loved the company to company jabs Sony has been making towards MSFT, E3 2013 and the indie parity post. Just another double standard in the gaming community. I agree though it's pretty weak to attack the Wii-U, but I disagree with the double standard because it's EA and the sob fest.

styferion3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

so you're saying it's fine going too far like that as long as you say april fool at the end of the day?
please bear in mind this is company to company, not personal business like the comment section here.

LOL_WUT3671d ago

Got to love EA stay salty people ;)

Dee_913671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

I'm trying to figure out, how is this too far? I don't even care if its april fools day or not, or rather the joke is funny or not.You people acting like the WII U has feelings. Its funny that a guy running the frostbite twitter made the comments yet people are mad at the entire Electronic Arts now.People are so damn irrational lol.
Nintendo should come back with a DLC joke lol.Bet EA wouldn't like that.

Eonjay3671d ago

@trufan...

I am trying to agree with you here... but alas no. I agree that people are to sensitive. I agree that if you have a problem the Wii U not getting EA games, tough shit. After all if Nintendo hasn't aggressively pursued them, you need to take your business to someone who will. I also think that people are a bunch of pussies who feel some sort of emotional attachment to companies and get insulted when people take gabs.

CAB18023671d ago

Meh, its just as bad as saying a PC gamer getting a console for an April fools joke

MASTER_RAIDEN3671d ago

im not even a big nintendo guy myself and even i have to admit the tweets were just really unfunny.
They werent offensive at all, and didnt get me upset in any way either. they just werent funny at all. not once while reading those tweets did i get the urge to laugh (or be upset for that matter).

dont mean to repeat myself but you seem to be having a little bit of trouble understanding why people arent so entertained by EAs tweets. everybody seems to go to the "your just salty" excuse when people dont like something. nah dude nobody salty. sometimes what you have to say just...kinda sucks.

AngelicIceDiamond3671d ago

People are upset because the Wii U can't do those things or they can't do those things effectively.

I dunno if the anger should be geared towards DICE or the fact the console's specs can't those requirements.

Or maybe both.

SilentNegotiator3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

How are ANY of those jokes "harsh"?

"Frostbite now runs on the #WiiU since it is the most powerful Gen4 platform, our renderer is now optimized for Mario and Zelda" - Ironic, not "harsh"
"Frostbite will power #HalfLife3, coming out summer 2014! #WiiU exclusive" - Absurd, not "harsh"
"Good news, we have finally fixed and optimized our ‘netcode’. Uses quantum entanglement for Zero Latency connections. Exclusively on #WiiU" - Quantum entanglement? Hilarious, not "harsh"

legionsoup3671d ago

Seems less like an April Fool's joke, and more like a jab at Nintendo (because EA couldn't do what they wanted on the console).

At least be creative with the joke.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3671d ago

okay what if someone said something like house caught on fire, car stolen or family member died and take it personally.

Their are people who create extreme jokes.

Kryptix3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

It's very apparent that they were poking fun of the Wii U's limitations and tried using April Fool's Day to slide the insult into public view. People caught on to it's true intentions and it got deleted.

I mean, a good April Fool's joke is something that makes people speculate to believe in the joke. The ones given were just too obvious to fool anyone.

randomass1713671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

@SilentNegotiator

I really don't see how they were supposed to be funny to anyone that actually owns and enjoys their Wii U. I want to get one and I think they seemed more like pointless, mean-spirited jabs. To you they're not harsh, but I think it's weird you describe any of them as hilarious.

edit: Either way, I think Wii U owners have every right to be annoyed, especially after how ingloriously EA ditched the system. The whole thing is just in bad taste.

Gamer19823671d ago

Wow I mean it was obviously a joke the fact they said frostbite would power HL3. Obviously Source would.. Anybody who knows games knows this..

abzdine3671d ago

that frostbite is garbage EA.
if Naughty Dog said it about theirs i would understand but FrostBite? seriously??

Patrick_pk443671d ago

I don't see a problem with the joke. It states facts.

SilentNegotiator3671d ago

"To you they're not harsh, but I think it's weird you describe any of them as hilarious"

"Quantum entanglement" as a development tool...how is that NOT hilarious (at least, in 2014)?

ShinMaster3671d ago

HOW IS THIS GOING "TOO FAR"? It's not very funny, but it ain't offensive either.

Saying FROSTBITE will power HL3 EXCLUSIVELY on Wii U is just plain silly.

They're just saying the complete opposite of the truth. There's some humor in that, even if it's a weak joke.
Are the Wii U's feelings gonna be hurt? Come on people.

crxss3671d ago

people need to lighten up

Evilsnuggle3671d ago Show
randomass1713671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

I dunno, I guess it's just not my kind of humor. Well either way, Peter Moore has apologized for it and called the tweets unacceptable/stupid. http://nintendoeverything.c...

edit: to the people disagreeing with my earlier comment, I don't think it's offensive either. I just think it's kind of dumb and I don't see why a professional corporation would even do something like that. It just seems immature and pointless.

elninels3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

I thought it was clever. People were hating on the lack of wii u support from EA. They're poking fun at the wii u and themselves.

Prime1573671d ago

What ea said is more trolling than fooling.

Bubble them down!

Sarcasm3671d ago

Overly sensitive Nintendo fans probably.

BattleAxe3671d ago

PS: Fun fact: Did you know BUGS cant get FROSTBITES? That's what we thought too but it turns out they actually do!

nukeitall3670d ago (Edited 3670d ago )

I wonder how many people here will still agree with what they said, if you replace Nintendo with Sony for instance in those tweets?

Point being, there is funny and there is stupid and insulting to Wii U owners.

Glad EA deleted it!

I kinda find it FUNNY!

Nintendo made a bad move so now EA is laughing at them.

It's Not like every XB1/PS4 fanboy here hasn't laughed at Nintendo for the under powered WiiU.

BlackWolf3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

But it's different when a company does this kind of things. It's unprofessional, and this kind of douche moves can make things sour between companies, specially when EA claims (we know it's not the truth but they have keep appearances, just in case) that they intend to keep working with Nintendo.

If it wasn't that bad, why the posts were deleted? I think this was uncalled for.

3-4-53671d ago

Whatever " it " is in life, EA doesn't comprehend/get/understand "it".

* "It" can be different in any given situation, but they seem to never "get it".

You know who else doesn't get "it".

People who aren't that intelligent.

So if they don't get "it", as in they don't understand WHY they are not liked, then it kind of proves that they aren't as smart as they think they are.

* They make mistakes A,B,C & D.

We tell them " Hey, we DON'T LIKE A,B,C,&D".

They do it anyways, and then THEY complain that WE complain about them.

If you don't understand why we don't trust/like you EA, then your OBVIOUSLY not as smart as you think you are.

Somebody REALLY OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY, is running things over there.

Prime1573671d ago

How is this joke bad in any way. Are people really going to cry about ea joking that wii-u is the most powerful next gen console. Seriously, if you think this is going to far and are crying about this then I am embarrassed for you. I get that some wii u fans are mad that ea isnt supporting it, but its not going to change.

Neonridr3671d ago

it's one thing if me and you toss around jokes about systems. But EA and Nintendo are companies and are expected to carry themselves in a PROFESSIONAL manner. Joking about another company that has helped make EA as big as they are today is rude and unprofessional. Nintendo has made EA tons of money in the past.

wsoutlaw873671d ago

Ya are still acting as if they said something bad when they didnt. It really isnt a big deal. Its a company that makes video games, not the president. I was more surprised about the net code tweet after all the people still having trouble with bf4 and saying they are going to use quantum entanglement as if its impossible to have servers that dont suck

nunley333671d ago

Yeah because poking fun at a company is so much worse than killing, robbing, making your customers sick. Monsanto does all this and more to people.

TBONEJF3671d ago

And makes the same shytty games every year

XxExacutionerxX3671d ago

(This goes to EA) Stop tweeting and Fix your very broken Battlefield 4 game, then you can talk about nintendo!!!! Thank You

combatcash3671d ago

Just read the tweets and they weren't funny. It's common knowledge that the wii u is the weakest of the "next gen consoles" but nobody cares. EA doesn't care about who they insult or don't either they don't even care if they release broken games to their fan base.

threefootwang3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

It was actually Frostbite that said these statements. EA apologized to Nintendo for the comments, they didn't think what FB said was funny. Not defending EA, but at least they apologized, get your facts straight.

Aliens congratulate humanity on progress in innovation when they had a look at the new dualshock controller (& Sony voted most innovative gaming company of all time based on their controller design for the ps4 that redefined gaming)

Microsoft developers voted best games development teams in the world & we congratulate them on thier innovative hard work on Titanfall & hope that thier 1st party studios continue that beautifull work, in fact we can easily see them thriving with no 3rd party support or rediculous dirty advertising at all.
They are also thanked for the deep immersive & diverse games they produce that are not just silly 1st person shooters & urge them to keep it up
Now imagine the above as tweets from Nintendo

Angeljuice3670d ago (Edited 3670d ago )

It's not going too far at all, if Nintendo didn't want to be the butt of industry jokes, they should have put their short arms in their long pockets and invested in a competitive product rather than relying on their reputation to sell a cheaply made piece of crap.

Immaturity knows no bounds at EA... of course neither does their professionalism. Just work on fixing games i.e BF4, making a decent NBA Live game, no more foot-in-mouth moments like Simcity will only ever work on-line, and committing to quality of quantity... cause if they manage to help DICE screw up Star Wars Battlefield, there will be hell to pay.

Errefus3671d ago

Disrespecful and unprofessional. i get it that is a joke but they went to far. And the fact that they removed the tweets and apologized shows how far they gone.

KwietStorm_BLM3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

I don't really care how other people would react. I'm saying *I* don't see what the big deal is. It's just a stupid joke, and people are getting offended. If anything, EA is making fun of themselves in context.

EA really doesnt have a lot of room to make jokes, considering their latest Battlefield is still a broken mess after 4 months since launch. That is indeed the joke.

lilbroRx3671d ago

Rules of business. If you pay money for a broken product, you are the one who has failed.

Honestly, EA shouldn't fix it because people these days are dumb enough to keep buying their products anyway.

Stop supporting EA and they will make changes. Otherwise, they'll release as many half-arsed projects as they feel like.

Dudebro903671d ago

By that logic we should never buy anything.

LOL_WUT3671d ago

Why don't you share those same views towards Nintendo then? For not making any changes and half-arsing the WiiU. See it can go both ways ;)

KwietStorm_BLM3671d ago

So we all knew the game was broken before it released?

Ck1x3671d ago

I couldn't agree more, people willingly buy games that are broken just hold off until the game drops in price or is fixed first!
And to the trollers, how often does Nintendo release a broken game? People like LOL_WUT make it their daily job to come into forums and bash the WiiU and how underpowered it is. Guess wut, we get that and there's nothing that your trolling will solve by this. In fact even though its a underpowered system compared to XbOne and PS4, the WiiU will probably have some of the highest rated games this generation. To be honest most of you people on this site must be teenagers when acting like the WiiU is the first console with poor 3rd party support.

lilbroRx3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

@KwietStorm there are these things called reviews, and that is what they are "supposed to be for". Of course most are about fanboyism and hits these days.

Though I'm sure at least a few of them pointed out the problems with that game.

KwietStorm_BLM3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

No, none of the reviews pointed out the problems we've been having with the game. They couldn't know the extent of it them anyway, not to this degree. And many of us don't use reviews as some sort of entry pass. When a game is released, if I want it I buy it. I don't even read reviews.

EA Hopes to Use Generative AI to Drive Monetization and Make Development 30% More Efficient

Today Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson provided a look into his ideas for the use of generative AI in the company's development processes.

Though i agree the ai thing is already in other forms of media there have been ai translations/scripts/voice over and even full ai commercials aired on tv. Ubisoft has created a ai game creator story/vo/music except the building of the game

The new unreal engine has auto terrain creation tools

In the world of greed in which it is winning without any major blow back ai is our future.

everyone want's biden dead on the mic or a criminal instead of a woman and now we are getting ai everything because no one will stop watching/playing ai created media.

GamerRN43d ago

Maybe they should just focus on making good games?

Kiryu199242d ago

Exactly EA are just pure evil. When they are beating Bank of America to be voted the worst company to work for that’s saying a lot

Good thing I don’t buy their games day one and wait for deep deep sale years after launch (the select few games I am actually interested in)

Gaming is making so much money yet the greed of these companies is never ending

CEO’s and people on board making millions yet cutting jobs to those who are actually making the products

EA is still a shady shitty company even with or without the help of Skynet. All they will use AI for is new ways to milk loot boxes and come up with the same sports title with a different year on the label. They are one company I truly do hate with a passion. They single handedly ruined some great franchise with their death touch. ME, Dead Space, Alice Returns, Dante's Inferno.

EA layoffs followed by 'Generative AI to Drive Monetization'

I knew it. Wonder what AI salary looks like? Nothing.

ChasterMies43d ago

I having a feeling that most of the layoffs in the industry are based on the idea that AI will do the same job for less.

DarXyde42d ago

Very likely, yes.

Made worse by the fact that the execs aren't changing their compensations.

My deepest fear at this point is that we are now in the capitalism endgame.

At this point, we really should just burn AI to the ground. Executives cannot be trusted to do the right thing.
How are those people expected to support families if everything gets automated?

Barlos43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

And take away creativity, and people's jobs as we've been seeing. Got it.

No thanks. I want my games created by people, not AI.

CobraKai43d ago

Exactly. If or when games start becoming more AI than people, im done with gaming. AI and companies like EA can suck donkey d***k.

just_looken43d ago

Though i agree remember this is no ps3/360 era were we got up to 3 games in one generation from on developer like gears/halo/bioware/sony/ms

The people today are pro esg/sweet baby for the most part AAA gaming is imploding right now.

We should be stepping back re evaluate everything as a whole this year xmen 97 written/directed by a woman that is nuts and its also being made by a group reshaping bodies to be less sexual like wtf. A dam famous cartoon from the 90's is being rebuilt with millions spent to be worse in everyway.

Gaming/movies/tv shows made today are worse than what we had 7years ago ai won't change this but that ai is also being made by these groups so either way we are screwed.

Chocoburger43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

EA doesn't want to lose their title of worst gaming company ever, always trying their best to remain the champs!
What's sad is that they have so much potential to be a decent publisher.

SSX Tricky / SSX 3
Def Jam Vendetta / Fight for New York

EA - Continuing to evolve our business and teams

EA CEO Andrew Wilson writes: "In this time of change, we expect these decisions to impact approximately 5 percent of our workforce. I understand this will create uncertainty and be challenging for many who have worked with such dedication and passion and have made important contributions to our company. While not every team will be impacted, this is the hardest part of these changes, and we have deeply considered every option to try and limit impacts to our teams. Our primary goal is to provide team members with opportunities to find new roles and paths to transition onto other projects. Where that’s not possible, we will support and work with each colleague with the utmost attention, care, and respect. You do realize around this time this happens all throughout many industries (not just the game industry), right? It has to do with taxes for these major companies, like tax subsidies for downsizing. You want to know a little secret? Around May or so you’ll see a spike in hiring…

It blows my mind that people are oblivious to corporate workings.

Andrew33650d ago

So over 25 huge companies cut jobs every year like this and it only got noticed this time?

CrimsonWing6950d ago (Edited 50d ago )

@Andrew336

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Google it up if you’re uninformed of how corporations work. Only gamers seem to live in a bubble and when they see things like crunch, acquisitions, and lay-offs they act like this is the only industry it happens to and how shocked they are about it.

Welcome to the real world, kid.

thorstein50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

EA CEO Wilson's total compensation was 20 million. Let's take away 19 million (I'm sure he can survive on 1 million.... somehow).

1 million is the salary of an in the chair developer @100,000 for 10 years.

He could earn 1 million a year.

And save the jobs of 15 in the chair devs for A DECADE (plus benefits) with ONE YEAR'S compensation.
