Facebook's Oculus Buyout 'Biggest VR Deal in VR History' - University Professor

VRFocus - Henry Fuchs, member of the American Academy of Arts and Scientists (AAAS), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Professor of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has labeled Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus VR as ‘the biggest deal in VR history’. Fuchs made the claim whilst hosting the keynote speech at the 2014 IEEEVR conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Facebook is set to purchase the Oculus Rift makers for a total of $2 billion USD.

Wow, with that kind of logic no wonder he has a job in a university. Of course it's 'the biggest VR deal in VR history', even though it was around before it was very primitive and was never taken seriously. We are really starting to venture into this new frontier I'm sure there will be bigger deals and bigger improvements in a few years. Sony's Morpheus from interviews sounds like it's running laps around Oculus and with Facebook dictating it's focus all potential for the OR went out the window.

"Sony's Morpheus from interviews sounds like it's running laps around Oculus"

Uh, hate to break it to you, but the DK2 Rift still out specs Morpheus in every department.

webeblazing3671d ago

dont rain on their parade. this is their time to shine. now they have ammo against OR. before the buyout they was in enemy base with no ammo.

annus3671d ago

What? Are you talking about the old development kit? The new one certainly doesn't have Sony 'running laps around it'.

Summons753671d ago

From what I understand Mroph is more responsive than OR.

Visuals will only catch up

annus3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

To DK1? DK2 uses OLED display (Morpheous is LCD) and also has a magnetometer, so it has better tracking...

And visual wise I hope you aren't talking about the hardware that will be rendering it (PC vs PS4)...

Pandamobile3671d ago

Yeah, the biggest hindrance to VR on PS4 is the PS4 itself. I takes a monster machine to produce the resolutions and framerates needed for a truly immersive VR experience.

1080p60 isn't going to cut it for long. The first consumer version of the Rift is rumoured to be 1440p95.

Oled is good but drives cost up and lot of people have mentioned that they would not buy vr if too dear. Sony maybe keeping costs down to get vr off the ground.I would pay for more tho.

Hence a 2 billion buyout to drive pricing back down ;).

Bonerboy3671d ago

Wow this Fuchs character is a total genuis! ‘the biggest deal in VR history’? You dont say. I can see now why this guy is a professor!
Thanks for that breaking piece of news Henry, you tard.

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook7343d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt343d ago (Edited 343d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal343d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow343d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal343d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt343d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.

Although I never owned an oculus, I played the demo for this at an electronics store. Pretty impressive in an early goings of VR title.
