I'm Becoming Increasingly Disappointed With Nintendo Switch

Richard at GameSpew: For months after launch I thought my Nintendo Switch was the best thing since sliced bread. Now, however, I'm just becoming increasingly disappointed by it.

I'm sorry Mario Odyssey is a disappointing exclusive?? I guess there's a first for everything..

More to a console than just Mario. Switch can’t hang with the PS4 or Xbox one in terms of overall games/capability (never mind the Pro and X pull ahead even more) . It’s a great portable but not a great console imo. Even the multiplatform games that make it to Switch (which aren’t a lot) are vastly inferior to their counterparts on other systems. And while Nintendo does have a few first party winners, it’s all it has to rely on. You’ll never get Farcry or final fantasy or any of the actual biggest selling games. I don’t even touch my Switch since Mario Odyssey.

ibrake4naps2177d ago

I've thought that too. It's the king of handhelds! If their messaging was more of it being a portable with easy tv connectivity. I think it wouldn't be compared to higher spec home consoles in a negative light.

mkis0072177d ago

I enjoyed Zelda even though I havent technically played any others...but ya that was the only game that grabbed me so far. Odyssey was kinda boring to me. Then again Mario was never my thing. Paper Mario...now that was my jam. Dont regret the purchase though; I like upporting the industry taking risks.

dumahim2176d ago

Yeah, I always saw it as a portable you can dock. Not sure why it wasn't marketed like that from the start. It seems that's how most people use it anyway.

ClanPsi12176d ago

I find it funny how you put PS4 and XBO in the same playing field.

There’s a lot of ppl that don’t. A lot of younger people don’t. I LOVE Zelda, and Mario is alright, and I appreciate its quality...but my issue with Switch is that it simply is NOT held to the same standards that other consoles and mobile devices are.

If Sony or MS released a tablet that played their games in 720, but also had a google store and did what other tablets do...it would be HUGE!

ILostMyMind2177d ago

I've always thought that there is still space for a portable PS and XB (maybe).

Old McGroin2177d ago

I'm a Switch owner since December, bought it because if the great games released in the first year and thought Nintendo would ride that wave with a steady release of AAA games. Nearly half way through this year and I'm sad to say my Switch has become stale. If last year hadn't happened I can honestly say I don't see anything on the horizon this year that would make me run out and buy one. Got so impatient that I bought a PS4 last month to play Monster Hunter and since then my Switch hasn't gotten a look in.

Nu2177d ago (Edited 2177d ago )

I wonder how the author feels about his Xbox One X gathering dyst with no games /s. Better to have games than to have no at all. You can use my quote if you like. 😉 Damn auto correct sucks

Sayai jin2176d ago

Nu, this article has nothing to do with the XB. I'm not disappointed with the Switch as I delivered on what I expected from it. The XB has no games at all? That's news to me. No big library of exclusives, but still getting all 3rd party games.

SR3882177d ago

Odyssey was abit meh, and I'm a huge Mario fan... I love my Switch, it great but there has been a game drought for the past 5 months :/ Ninty said no more game droughts and what have we got ... E3 needs alot more games coming to Switch, we know SMA5H, Metroid, Pokémon etc are coming but more needs it and old franchises need to be brought back...

InTheZoneAC2176d ago

BotW is pretty underwhelming, considering they delayed the Wii u version for the switch

Gr8saiyaman882176d ago

Super Mario Odyssey > God of War

: D

Kribwalker2176d ago

i would agree with that so far and so would the critics as it does have a higher metascore and open critic score.

indyman77772176d ago

Wow the only thing rated higher than Zelda is Mario (meta rating) and he is disappointed? The majority of reviews are PERFECT 100's so I read the article and it sounds like a cluless fanboy wrote it from stuff he read from other haters. Sorry not buying the hate. Plus since he is a fan boy he does not know that there are other AAA million sellers on SWITCH. More than 10 already. Your not fooling anyone.

SegaGamer2177d ago

The problem with the Switch is that thing is simply not powerful enough. Some companies will try and optimise games for it, but it will take a lot of work to achieve it. Doom is the perfect example of this, it's been scaled back massively just so they could get the game to work at all on the Switch.

The Switch is still getting a lot of games from the 360 / PS3 era, but that was a long time ago now. As time goes on, the Switch is just going to get more and more left behind. We are already at the point where a lot of games from this gen just aren't being ported to the Switch, and when they are, they are scaled back by a ridiculous amount. There is only so long that they can continue to do this and the Switch seems to have already reached it's limit with the type of games it can take.

Even the latest Naruto bundle had to be scaled back just so they could get the games to work on the Switch. This is where we are with the Switch now, it's just not powerful enough.

Still, it's selling well, so i'm sure Nintendo are happy enough, but for me, it's not something i think i will ever be that interested in. The idea is good, but i'm not willing to spend so much money on it, i can get better gaming experiences elsewhere. It's good for gaming on the go (something i never actually do) but when playing on a tv.......well, i may as well just plug in my 360 and PS3 instead of buying a Switch.

bluefox7552177d ago

Not only that, but doom is a special exception because of the unique scalability of the id tech 6 engine, I don't see any games outside of that engine even achieving that much.

Goldenhawk5212177d ago (Edited 2177d ago )

I think Nintendo should have waited another year or so before releasing it so they can have used better hardware to justify the $300. If they were to release the Nintendo Switch with more powerful hardware at the time they released it, people would have complained about it being $350 or $400. Even when it launched at $300, most people predicted it to be around $250. You can't satisfy everybody though, so it's understandable. I'm pretty sure that within the next couple years at least, Nintendo will release a more powerful Switch variant just like they did with the 3DS no doubt. There is already a pretty big demand for a more powerful Switch, so I can't see Nintendo passing up on this opportunity.

kneon2177d ago

Releasing a new, more powerful Switch in a couple of years is an opportunity to piss off existing customers. If the purpose of a new Switch is so it can get some of the newer 3rd party games, then that means the original Switch won't be getting them, so all those early adopters will be left behind.

Goldenhawk5212177d ago (Edited 2177d ago )

So Nintendo was wrong to release a *New 3DS then? Sony released a more powerful PS4 in just 3 years, Microsoft released a more powerful Xbox twice, and Nintendo has as well. How would this be any different? You're always gonna piss off a group of people no matter what you do. I think 3 years after an initial system release is reasonable. Sure you will leave a fringe group of people pissed, but the overall fan base will be pretty happy.

Gaming_1st2176d ago

@Goldenhawk521

Cause the switch is under powered and under featured to a base PS4 and Xbox 1. No reason for that in this day and age. The game argument will only go so far, especially if you only have the big 4 you release over and over.

paintedgamer19842176d ago (Edited 2176d ago )

I was hoping for the x2 chip instead of the same x1 garbage that runs in the nvidia shield in the switch. The x2 would have basically had better performance, battery, and scaleability, not cost nintendo that much more, and basically would have ran all games at 1080 60. Which is a huge missed opportunity. All 1st and 3rd partys on the go at 1080 60. Say wut...

Kneon:

The 3ds says hello... The 3ds released a better performing handheld a few years down the road. I assume the switch will be no different. I would be fine if by 2020 there was a ss (super switch).

crazyCoconuts2177d ago

Agreed. Invariably Switch's biggest competition will be the same as the Vita's - mobile games. Nintendo will keep supporting the Switch with IP (as will Indies) so it'll stay alive but it won't be keeping pace with new releases. Doom and Wolfenstein 2 on Switch will be the Borderlands 2 on Vita.

paintedgamer19842176d ago (Edited 2176d ago )

Very well said,

I used to be the BIGGEST nintender fanboy opposite of yourself. Starting with the nes, and since i was in like... the 2nd grade then i was constantly bickering with the sega guys (mostly guys as it was a total sausage fest back then) on the playgrounds back and forth with their famous saying "sega does what nintendont". For those that say back in the day there were no console wars, most likely werent old enough to remember. Well, i member (member berries).

From the nes all the way to the gamecube not once did i or nintendo have to worry about their consoles being underpowered or launching with some damned gimmick. Fast forward to the wii-switch years, and while they are good enough, every last 1 of them have carried these 2 traditions like a std contracted from a 1 night stand. Why cant for once we get power, the games, and no gimmicks? The nes, snes, n64, gamecube didnt need to be vastly underpowered compared to the competition nor need gimmicks to be successful and carve many fond memories in to this gamers heart.

While the new mario was amazing, botw was souless compared to oot, mm, ww, tp, and ss. Thats worse than basically every zelda before it. Star fox was hot garbage on the wiiu and if you disagree well, youre in the minority. Xbc2 doesnt hold a candle to the older titles. While mario kart is really entertaiing, its super cheap when playing the computer on the hardest mode. Ssb is pretty much always amazing, i just know with this new entry its going to just be more of the same. Metroid Prime being my fav in the series, other m was hot garbage. What im getting at here, is most of nintendo stable 1st party franchises have gotten stale to this old school nintendo gamer. Gimmicks and underpowered hardware is whats holding this gen back from being truly amazing. I almost wish the wii, wiiu, or switch was my 1st nintendo console so i could see that nintendo magic again, but for this gamer, the mario plush toy is complety sunkissed and worn after many washes...

If you forget the PR about home console and see the Switch like portable its the best in market and its amazing to play outside, on the bus, train, beach. Mario Kart, Zelda, Splatoon, Odyssey!

EddieNX 2177d ago

It's fully portable and yet there's still people who say it's a home console lol. It's a powerful portable that plays on the tv.Its awesome!

Sgt_Slaughter2177d ago (Edited 2177d ago )

It's a console that you can take with you, not the other way around. If it were a portable first, console second, the dock wouldn't be bundled in it and the 3DS wouldn't still exist. I love the portable aspect of the system but people need to stop using their option about the system as a fact.

2177d ago
TekoIie2177d ago (Edited 2177d ago )

Yeh if we're absolutely honest the hybrid narrative is pretty much just marketing. If the dock added power to the system then I'd call it a hybrid, but right now it has all the features of a portable system while creating the illusion of being a home console/hybrid.

Having a system that's running games that on a technical level outperforms 360/PS3 games while being portable is pretty solid. I think once E3 hits we're going to see a nice variety of upcoming titles. We're guaranteed reveals for games like SSMB, Fire Emblem and Pokemon, and if we're lucky some announcements like Animal Crossing or Pikmin.

mkis0072177d ago

I dont agree with your logic sgt. The dock doesnt have any tech inside it though...its just a charger/video out cradle. You could literally create one for the vita if you wanted to, and sony could up the speed in docked mode due to not having to use the battery, just like switch.

Its a cool device, but a spade is a spade. Doesn't need the dock to ever work...you can own one without owning the dock. Thats a portable. Devils advocate signing off.

Imalwaysright2177d ago

it's a home console to me. Never take it out as it takes literally a 5 minute drive for me to get to the work place and I have always use it as any other console before it: hooked to the TV. It also provides home console experiences with BoTW being one of the best games I played this gen alongside Persona 5 and Witcher 3. There is no one that can't tell me that the Switch isn't a home console since it is very much providing me a home console experience period.

kneon2177d ago

I'm with TekoIie on this. The Switch dock is nothing but a USB-c hub with an HDMI adapter. It could be replaced by a cable. My PSP Go has a dock and video cable, is it a home console as well?

Gaming_1st2176d ago (Edited 2176d ago )

@EddieNX, mkis007, TekoIie, kneon

Nothing i like better then showing people up. Nintendo has stated themselves it a home console on the go. And it has more power docked. But hey, whatever fits your agenda, right?

Facts do not care about opinions.

TekoIie2176d ago

@Gaming_1st

"Nintendo has stated themselves it a home console on the go"

Marketing... Which sounds better? A portable that you can plug into your tv, or a home console that you can play on the go. Think about which narrative you'd go with when marketing a new system.

The point is that the dock is not essential for the hardware to operate. If the Vita came with a dock we still would call it a handheld.

"And it has more power docked."

No I'm afraid it doesn't. It's just running at a higher clock speed. The system is capable of doing this without the dock. Like I said before, the dock does not add power to the system.

"hey, whatever fits your agenda, right?"

Agenda??? Please, enlighten me. It's clearly a hidden agenda if even I'm not sure what it is.

Goldenhawk5212177d ago

Seeing how the dock is just an empty plastic box with and HDMI output to set your Switch in, I don't see why Nintendo should charge $80 for it.

Gaming_1st2176d ago

While it is expensive. Again it adds more power to console.

Facts do not care about your opinions.

Gaming_1st2174d ago

Again if anyone can show me facts, that the dock does not give the switch more power. Then by all means provide the info. It's a know fact that while in docked mode, it outputs at a higher resolution due to the fact that while in portable mode it does run lower resolution to save on power for the battery. So in fact, the dock does give it more power, which can only be accessed while on the dock. Facts do not care about your opinions.

Seraphim2176d ago

nope, still a console here. while i figured this year wouldn't stack up to last it has become a bit disappointing. But hopefully [more] exclusives that make it worth owning are around the corner.

sKiiTs82176d ago

personally, that whole portable thing is a gimmick. I'd hate to play it on a train, for example. for me, gaming is a special thing, that I only do when im fully concentrated / relaxed - but that's just me!

xRacer74x2177d ago

Not surprised. Once you get past the heavy hitters like Zelda and Mario the Switch offers very little to average consumer. I love my switch but its not my primary console never thought it would be.

letsa_go2177d ago

I think the honeymoon phase is wearing off!

RosweeSon2177d ago

Well it lasted a lot longer than the 4 months i was with Xbox this Gen. Won’t be going back anytime soon. PS4 switch for me perfect combo.

The 10th Rider2177d ago

...It's still selling strong without any huge releases yet this year. With Smash and Pokemon on the way this year it's only going to become even more popular. Both of those are actually typically bigger franchises than 3D Mario and Legend of Zelda.

xRacer74x2177d ago (Edited 2177d ago )

@RosweeSon, least you got 4 months with a console you did not like much. I got like 2 exclusive games out of the PS4 so far that have been must play to me Second Son and Horizon Zero Dawn other than that my ps4 collects dusts. XBOX X , switch and PC is are where I spend most of my time.

stupidusername2177d ago (Edited 2177d ago )

It's not my primary console either as my PS4 get tons of multiplats and exclusives all the time which mostly takes my focus.
But to be fair, the Swtich has more than just Mario and Zelda, and it's just the consol's first year. I'd personally recommend mario + rabbids, Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade 2. Playing Rocket League in bed, on the toilet or while chilling outside is also highly recommendable.

Gaming_1st2176d ago

Of course the switch offers very little. And people are seeing this.

EddieNX 2177d ago

I absolutely adore my switch. I don't think of it as anything like a playstation or an Xbox. It's an entirely different thing.

Pennywise1382177d ago

I wish more people would understand the Switch is meant to coexist with either a PS4 or xbox and not be a direct competitor. Why would I want a system that's doing exactly what my PS4 is doing? Sometimes you want steak and potatoes (PS4) sometimes you want ice cream (switch).

remixx1162177d ago

You h3otta eat ya steak and potatoes at the table, you can slap that ice cream in a waffle cone and hit the road.

Both great options really.

Goldenhawk5212177d ago (Edited 2177d ago )

Because it can be used to play games while you take it with you? Yea, why would anybody wanna be able to play PS4-level games on the go? Seems irrational to me that somebody would wanna play something like The Last of Us in an airplane. I should have to wait 'till I get home to play that stuff goddammit. It's a good thing that you can't play PS4 games on a PS Vita through something like "remote play" or anything. Nobody cares for that.

Goldenhawk5212177d ago

I guess nobody understood my sarcasm in my last comment lol

Gaming_1st2176d ago

@Pennywise138

You can clamore coexist all you want. But you need to put out games. And the switch doesn't cut it in that front, sorry.

Facts doesnt care about your opinion.

G3ng4r2176d ago

Do you honestly want games on par with mario odyssey hitting switch every month and making sony's line up look pitiful? You act like you've had something good besides GoW to play this year. Give it until e3 when nintendo is dropping announcements left and right while sony is showing off the same games as the last few years, e3 2014 in the case of dreams. Facts care nothing at all about your opinion or feelings.

sKiiTs82176d ago

that's a nice way to look at it, however, given the price point, i can't really justify purchasing it if it's not going to be used as a primary console haha.
