I'm Becoming Increasingly Disappointed With Nintendo Switch

More to a console than just Mario. Switch can’t hang with the PS4 or Xbox one in terms of overall games/capability (never mind the Pro and X pull ahead even more) . It’s a great portable but not a great console imo. Even the multiplatform games that make it to Switch (which aren’t a lot) are vastly inferior to their counterparts on other systems. And while Nintendo does have a few first party winners, it’s all it has to rely on. You’ll never get Farcry or final fantasy or any of the actual biggest selling games. I don’t even touch my Switch since Mario Odyssey.

I enjoyed Zelda even though I havent technically played any others...but ya that was the only game that grabbed me so far. Odyssey was kinda boring to me. Then again Mario was never my thing. Paper Mario...now that was my jam. Dont regret the purchase though; I like upporting the industry taking risks.

There’s a lot of ppl that don’t. A lot of younger people don’t. I LOVE Zelda, and Mario is alright, and I appreciate its quality...but my issue with Switch is that it simply is NOT held to the same standards that other consoles and mobile devices are.

If Sony or MS released a tablet that played their games in 720, but also had a google store and did what other tablets do...it would be HUGE!

I'm a Switch owner since December, bought it because if the great games released in the first year and thought Nintendo would ride that wave with a steady release of AAA games. Nearly half way through this year and I'm sad to say my Switch has become stale. If last year hadn't happened I can honestly say I don't see anything on the horizon this year that would make me run out and buy one. Got so impatient that I bought a PS4 last month to play Monster Hunter and since then my Switch hasn't gotten a look in.

The problem with the Switch is that thing is simply not powerful enough. Some companies will try and optimise games for it, but it will take a lot of work to achieve it. Doom is the perfect example of this, it's been scaled back massively just so they could get the game to work at all on the Switch.

The Switch is still getting a lot of games from the 360 / PS3 era, but that was a long time ago now. As time goes on, the Switch is just going to get more and more left behind. We are already at the point where a lot of games from this gen just aren't being ported to the Switch, and when they are, they are scaled back by a ridiculous amount. There is only so long that they can continue to do this and the Switch seems to have already reached it's limit with the type of games it can take.

Even the latest Naruto bundle had to be scaled back just so they could get the games to work on the Switch. This is where we are with the Switch now, it's just not powerful enough.

Still, it's selling well, so i'm sure Nintendo are happy enough, but for me, it's not something i think i will ever be that interested in. The idea is good, but i'm not willing to spend so much money on it, i can get better gaming experiences elsewhere. It's good for gaming on the go (something i never actually do) but when playing on a tv.......well, i may as well just plug in my 360 and PS3 instead of buying a Switch.

Not only that, but doom is a special exception because of the unique scalability of the id tech 6 engine, I don't see any games outside of that engine even achieving that much.

I think Nintendo should have waited another year or so before releasing it so they can have used better hardware to justify the $300. If they were to release the Nintendo Switch with more powerful hardware at the time they released it, people would have complained about it being $350 or $400. Even when it launched at $300, most people predicted it to be around $250. You can't satisfy everybody though, so it's understandable. I'm pretty sure that within the next couple years at least, Nintendo will release a more powerful Switch variant just like they did with the 3DS no doubt. There is already a pretty big demand for a more powerful Switch, so I can't see Nintendo passing up on this opportunity.

Releasing a new, more powerful Switch in a couple of years is an opportunity to piss off existing customers. If the purpose of a new Switch is so it can get some of the newer 3rd party games, then that means the original Switch won't be getting them, so all those early adopters will be left behind.

How would this be any different? You're always gonna piss off a group of people no matter what you do. I think 3 years after an initial system release is reasonable. I was hoping for the x2 chip instead of the same x1 garbage that runs in the nvidia shield in the switch. The x2 would have basically had better performance, battery, and scaleability, not cost nintendo that much more, and basically would have ran all games at 1080 60. Which is a huge missed opportunity. All 1st and 3rd partys on the go at 1080 60. Say wut...

Agreed. Invariably Switch's biggest competition will be the same as the Vita's - mobile games. Nintendo will keep supporting the Switch with IP (as will Indies) so it'll stay alive but it won't be keeping pace with new releases. Doom and Wolfenstein 2 on Switch will be the Borderlands 2 on Vita.

I used to be the BIGGEST nintender fanboy opposite of yourself. Starting with the nes, and since i was in like... the 2nd grade then i was constantly bickering with the sega guys (mostly guys as it was a total sausage fest back then) on the playgrounds back and forth with their famous saying "sega does what nintendont". For those that say back in the day there were no console wars, most likely werent old enough to remember. Well, i member (member berries).

From the nes all the way to the gamecube not once did i or nintendo have to worry about their consoles being underpowered or launching with some damned gimmick. Fast forward to the wii-switch years, and while they are good enough, every last 1 of them have carried these 2 traditions like a std contracted from a 1 night stand. Why cant for once we get power, the games, and no gimmicks? The nes, snes, n64, gamecube didnt need to be vastly underpowered compared to the competition nor need gimmicks to be successful and carve many fond memories in to this gamers heart.

While the new mario was amazing, botw was souless compared to oot, mm, ww, tp, and ss. Thats worse than basically every zelda before it. Star fox was hot garbage on the wiiu and if you disagree well, youre in the minority. Xbc2 doesnt hold a candle to the older titles. While mario kart is really entertaiing, its super cheap when playing the computer on the hardest mode. Ssb is pretty much always amazing, i just know with this new entry its going to just be more of the same. Metroid Prime being my fav in the series, other m was hot garbage. What im getting at here, is most of nintendo stable 1st party franchises have gotten stale to this old school nintendo gamer. Gimmicks and underpowered hardware is whats holding this gen back from being truly amazing. I almost wish the wii, wiiu, or switch was my 1st nintendo console so i could see that nintendo magic again, but for this gamer, the mario plush toy is complety sunkissed and worn after many washes...

Yeh if we're absolutely honest the hybrid narrative is pretty much just marketing. If the dock added power to the system then I'd call it a hybrid, but right now it has all the features of a portable system while creating the illusion of being a home console/hybrid.

Having a system that's running games that on a technical level outperforms 360/PS3 games while being portable is pretty solid. I think once E3 hits we're going to see a nice variety of upcoming titles. We're guaranteed reveals for games like SSMB, Fire Emblem and Pokemon, and if we're lucky some announcements like Animal Crossing or Pikmin.

I dont agree with your logic sgt. The dock doesnt have any tech inside it though...its just a charger/video out cradle. You could literally create one for the vita if you wanted to, and sony could up the speed in docked mode due to not having to use the battery, just like switch.

Its a cool device, but a spade is a spade. Doesn't need the dock to ever work...you can own one without owning the dock. Thats a portable. Devils advocate signing off.

it's a home console to me. Never take it out as it takes literally a 5 minute drive for me to get to the work place and I have always use it as any other console before it: hooked to the TV. It also provides home console experiences with BoTW being one of the best games I played this gen alongside Persona 5 and Witcher 3. There is no one that can't tell me that the Switch isn't a home console since it is very much providing me a home console experience period.

I'm with TekoIie on this. The Switch dock is nothing but a USB-c hub with an HDMI adapter. It could be replaced by a cable. My PSP Go has a dock and video cable, is it a home console as well?

Marketing... Which sounds better? A portable that you can plug into your tv, or a home console that you can play on the go. Think about which narrative you'd go with when marketing a new system.

The point is that the dock is not essential for the hardware to operate. If the Vita came with a dock we still would call it a handheld.

Again if anyone can show me facts, that the dock does not give the switch more power. Then by all means provide the info. It's a know fact that while in docked mode, it outputs at a higher resolution due to the fact that while in portable mode it does run lower resolution to save on power for the battery. So in fact, the dock does give it more power, which can only be accessed while on the dock. Facts do not care about your opinions.

...It's still selling strong without any huge releases yet this year. With Smash and Pokemon on the way this year it's only going to become even more popular. Both of those are actually typically bigger franchises than 3D Mario and Legend of Zelda.

It's not my primary console either as my PS4 get tons of multiplats and exclusives all the time which mostly takes my focus.
But to be fair, the Swtich has more than just Mario and Zelda, and it's just the consol's first year. I'd personally recommend mario + rabbids, Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade 2. Playing Rocket League in bed, on the toilet or while chilling outside is also highly recommendable.

Thats exactly it tho. All you do is the same exact challenges over and over to get moons to progress. It's a giant checklist that offers little challenge by never utilizing many of the mechanics you can do. Like diving mid air or hat hopping are never used outside of speed running. It's a waste and very dull. They did a similar thing with BOTW which again was a giant checklist with the same handful of puzzles being thrown at you over and over. Really boring after the first few times.

To get the moon you have to go through many different challenges. Some of those challenges are almost impossible to complete, like the beachball and the rope jump ones. When you are able to complete those in just a couple of tried then you can say that this game is easy. Until then, you are wrong.

The challenges you are looking for appears when you've completed the main story. The secret platforming challenges and secret bosses are truly challenging.
But It would indeed be nice to have more hard challenges earlier through the story, but I guess Nintendo are afraid it's gonna scare of kids and casuals, and that I do get.

Oh I know I've already done those. The only real difference in those fights is some minor enemy or having to dodge projectiles raining on you. Hell, the octoboss was even easier because you had infinite water. The only real threat is that endurance thing on the dark side of the moon with the broodals with no healing. Beyond that its been nothing but basic platforming, catch the rabbit, race the koopas, etc. for the 500th time literally. They should've given mario new abilities or had the classic powerup modes instead of viving you everything outright like BOTW did

The first time I ever walked up to the jump rope challenge I did 275 jumps before I stopped trying as there was no point to continue jumping since the last moon was granted at 100 jumps. I even uploaded a video of it on twitter and asking how people can sit there hitting A until they hit 99999. The beach ball one was a little more difficult because it takes too long to get to the second star. But yeah go ahead and assume things

No its about content on a device when new and OVERALL expectation of content throughout its life. That's what matters.

Nintendo didn't have much if you owned a Wii U. Especially not if you own a PC/PS4/XB1/Wii U. If you had any or multiple of these, all that was left was portability, Mario, Arms, Xenoblade and a few other titles.

So in essence Nintendo offers far less content, because it doesn't get the kinds of games the other devices get and many times what it does comes late, more expensive, and with inferior IQ. But you get portability.

This won't change either as people are already looking to next gen when Switch can't handle this gen games. (or as I said in another post, barely, in the rare best case scenario like Doom a 1 in 1,000 game)

All that can happen is for Switch to continue selling well, not slow down, and hope 3rd parties have a reason to create a team to specifically develop games on Switch. Meanwhile Nintendo needs to drastically up its first party offerings. Especially what would be considered AAA Nintendo games.

This is how you have to look at it, because otherwise you're just pulling the wool over your own eyes. Not a good idea.

DKC:TF is the first decent AAA release which hasn’t launched previously on PS4/Xbone, however even that is a re-release.
The last game I bought for Switch was Odyssey back in October 2017.

Exactly. I looked at my Wii U, my knowledge that I will never use Switch on the go, and the announced lineup and said... well $300 or more for Mario Odyssey? No thanks. Paid online? No thanks. Without the screen and portability angle Switch could be a $149-179 device. That's how it values to me, and many others.

If it reduces in price and gets enough games I'm interested that I can't play on my WIi U, I'll bite. But I said way back then it might be never or a few years. I've seen nothing since then to change that. If anything I'm even more resolute on it. Why? Well if they'll remake any game, I know I can just pick up any game I miss on the next device, if it's a proper console.

There's not much benefit in me buying a Switch. Anyone that finds value in it, more power to you, enjoy. But they made a device that just isn't for me.

Full clock doesn't mean more power, it means it removes the restrictions that portable places on it.

It's not more power. But it is in effect, more power compared to portable mode, which developers, if they choose, can up resolution or whatever. That said, they have to create and provide that content, which can also create disk space size, which of course, can be an issue if digital.

This is completely false. Smash and Pokemon are releasing this year and both franchises are typically bigger commercially than 3D Mario and Zelda. On top of that there's Project Octopath, Fire Emblem, Yoshi, and likely one or two games under wraps.

Plus over the next year and a half I'm sure we'll see a 2D Mario, Animal Crossing, Retro Studios new game, Next Level's new game (Luigi's Mansion 3?), Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4, Pikmin 4 . . . and that's just the stuff we know exists and should be coming soon. Mario Kart 9 should be 2019/2020 and by 2020 it'll be about time we could see another 3D Mario or Legend of Zelda game release.

On the third party side most 3DS developers are moving on to the Switch. The fantastic Level-5 said Switch is their main focus and they want all their games on Switch. Capcom will be putting Professor Layton on Switch. A lot of those third-party JRPG's will be on Switch now. Even without most of the typical AAA home console third-party games the Switch should be fine on that front because in addition to a selection of those games, it will have the third-party support the 3DS and Vita had.

Yeah, a lot of people think 3D Mario and Legend of Zelda are Nintendo's biggest franchises. That is definitely true from a critical perspective, but that doesn't translate to massive sales. Nintendo's biggest franchises are Pokemon, 2D Mario, and Mario Kart. As of now they have a port of Mario Kart and that's it. Below that things are a bit trickier, some franchises do better on handheld and others are better on home consoles, but the next biggest is pretty much Smash Brothers, with 3D Mario just below that. Then below that you've got Splatoon, Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, and occasionally another series or two that achieves the same number of sales.

So in the next year Nintendo is set to release Pokemon and Smash Brothers, two of their biggest franchises from a commercial perspective. If I had to hazard a guess 2D Mario will be 2018 or 2019 and Mario Kart 9 will be 2019 or 2020. By then it will be time to think about another 3D Mario or a new Legend of Zelda game. I don't think sales will really start to see a major lull anytime soon.

Nintendo could of made two devices, a proper console with PS4 Pro like power for $299-349 and the Switch. They chose just to do the Switch. Now Nintendo as a whole is defined by what games can be made on a portable device, which as we see, are indies, 10 year old games, the rare Doom best case scenario, 1st party Nintendo titles, and the 3rd party efforts like Ubi Rabbids that could become more common if it continues to sell.

The ps4 had 2 drought years before it got really good, sure 2015 had bloodborne but most of the good stuff didnt come until 2016

Yes, but as stated from the beginning, they put their teams on Wii U games to port to Switch and started a few things for 2019-2020-2021. Which means those that made the Wii U ports, would then only start the NEXT games AFTER that. Nintendo simply doesn't have the teams to carry a console.

Nintendo wouldn't have to put the console on the back and haul it themselves if it was powerful enough to put the AA/AAA games on it. Without those games, Nintendo does, and the results are a meager offering of games.

I really enjoyed my switch at first, but my honeymoon phase is about done. I haven't played it in a couple of months now, and it sits gathering dust. I've been playing Vita again, mainly to finish up the R&C collection and Y's VIII, (which is fantastic btw, get it for switch when the port drops!) But now being a switch owner has really boiled down to the main reason I bought it: the dream of getting a new Metroid, which Nintendo is actually doing, and the hope of a new Advance Wars.

For now though, I just don't see much use coming from it until at least July when Octopath Traveler comes out. My next game purchase will be SMT: Strange Journey Redux for my 3DS, which as much as I love, I now value even more over switch due to BC games and VC games.

And considering how poorly the Wii U sold, it makes complete sense for Nintendo to bring those Wii U games over to the Switch so they can reach a larger audience. Sony did the exact same thing by bringing over HD versions of PS3 games like The Last of Us, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, God of War 3, Heavy Rain/Beyond Two Souls, Journey, Flower, etc. I personally didn't own a Wii U, so all of those games are new to me and millions of others. The Wii U only had a 10 million userbase which, in terms of market share is next to nothing. The reason Switch is doing so well isn't just a direct result of Wii U's failure. It's doing well because it's an infinitely better designed machine than the Wii U with much more versatility and functionality. It really is what the follow up to the Wii SHOULD have been. The Wii U was a terribly designed console and Nintendo could've easily followed that up with another terribly designed console. But they didn't and now they are reaping the rewards.

I guess I might feel differently If I had bought my Switch as my primary gaming device however, it is pretty telling that I chose Switch over the XB1X because in my opinion, if you game on PlayStation there are virtually no reasons to by an Xbox. I love the Nintendo exclusives, they supplement the content I enjoy on PS4 brilliantly, I am more excited by Mario Tennis than anything MS has lined up for sure.

I guess my point is, if you bought Switch on the premise of it being a secondary device or a mobile device, it absolutely delivers on its promise, having Darkest Dungeon on the go or when the footy is on the TV is amazing to me at the moment.

I own a base PS4, bought my Switch to take on the go, but I also use it on my TV as well because I want to play it's games on the big screen.

I see no reason to buy an XBox this gen, the games hold no real interest for me, when I can afford to build my PC I'll probably pick up Forza Horizon 3/4, Gears 4, Ori and Cuphead.
You just don't need an Xbox now.

Building a decent PC has become pretty cheap with the Ryzen APUs and soon 4K gaming will be cheap when AMD launches Navi, I mean GTX 1080 performance for $250, it's too much of a lure, way better capabilities than the One X.

There's too much partisanship here, so I won't reply to any posts. I'll just say that this writer at gamespew is whining way too much. I agree with some of his points, like the inability to back up saves (a deal breaker for me) and the hardware issues like reliable controller connectivity (which I think will get solved). But, buddy, if you're disappointed with Mario Odyssey, you may have to rethink whether Nintendo consoles are for you at all, ever. And you know 3rd-party games haven't been Nintendo's focus for a very long time, right? Don't look for major exclusives from 3rd parties. Those were never going to happen without Nintendo footing the development bill, and you should have known that before you bought in.

Well clearly Switch is capable enough for great Nintendo games to run on it, sure 3rd Party titles are more demanding from a hardware perspective, but to get the likes of Breath of The Wild on a portable system to fit in your hands concessions needed to be made.

Sure Nintendo could have used a 16nm version of the Tegra X1, which would have allowed Switch to house a faster clocked version of the SoC, by about 25%, unless Nintendo wanted to make a bigger box they were always limited to a system about half the performance of XB1, which isn't bad for a box Switch's size.

Going with a box that fits under your TV and that only stays under a TV most of the time would have allowed them to make a more powerful system, with little in the way of a lure to get the masses to buy this Nintendo games console.

Switch plays great games, is a fun system, even though I own a PS4.
If anything I feel it's great to have a machine that differs from PS4, it gives me different reasons to buy the Switch compared to PS4.

I'm loving my Nintendo Switch, it's a great little system.
Mario Odyssey is utterly phenomenal IMO, Labo is a load of fun (even for adults that like creative things), Zelda BoTW, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade, Arms, MK8, Bayonetta, Fast RMX and Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle are all great fun.

I think I play my Switch as much as my PS4 and PSVR.
Tbh it all depends on whether you like a good chunk of the games on each system, but too me the stuff I have for my Switch provides a great draw to get me on the system.

Arms, Xenoblade, Splatoon, Fast RMX and Labo are all new things, maybe not so much Xenoblade because it's the 3rd game, but it's pretty fresh feeling, but those games coming in the first year was pretty damn good.

It was obvious that Nintendo stopped supporting the Wii U (besides BOTW) years before Switch launched, and yet now that Switch has been out a year, not much has come out.

Games takes years to make. This is obvious. Each team that made a game that has already launched on Switch will take years to put out another title. That's what was so obvious about Switch's launch. It had very few games that weren't on the Wii U. It had half titles like Splatoon 2. Arms which easily could of been a Wii U title.

Of course they have other titles on the way for 2018 and 2019, but it's few and far between. So it's the same drip, drip, drip you get from Nintendo. Some smaller efforts can be done a bit faster... like Arms type games. We'll know more as Nintendo directs/E3 showcases more.

Meanwhile Switch ISN'T powerful enough for most AAA games these days. Doom is simply the best case scenario for Switch. Some Nintendo fans think it's proof positive that any game can run on Switch. These people are simply delusional. This was the best case scenario. By FAR the best case scenario. It could barely run that, which showcases the problem with Switch. It simply cannot run the top games of today. 3rd parties make games Switch simply can't handle. But you got portability. If you care for that. So most of these games are not coming to Switch, and that is the vast majority of the games people buy besides indies.

Doom runs at like 150-200 FPS on ultra with a modern PC. It's ridiculous. It simply is the most bang for your buck graphics wise game you'll find. It's ludicrous to believe other games can copy that, because they all have different situations.

People have to understand the realities of game development. Each company has their own proficiencies. They use an engine that know to create the games they know. Most can't simply make a Switch version of their game on a different engine even if they wanted to. They make their games and the devices that run them, have to be able to compensate for the different performance levels of that engine and the skill in which the team can wield it. Switch can't. It simply needs the perfect circumstances to achieve it. Like Doom, which is unlike pretty much everything else.

Cry out about it not getting specific games all you people like; it wasn't that long ago that you were ALL saying, with ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY, that it wouldn't be getting the new Wolfenstein either, let alone other games like Doom which can take a lot of power for a system with smaller specs to run.

Specs alone do not determine how great a game will or will not be on a system like Switch.
A game doesn't need to have Far Cry 5 graphics to become an enthralling experience, and Switch is going to get plenty of games that not only compete in entertainment quality with other big names, but that will also stand the test of time and be looked back upon as amazing titles that ANY system wished it had.

Thus why you won't see many AAA games that aren't 6-8 years old, because power wise, the Switch is from last decade. Literally. 2006 CPU and 2007 GPU. It's that simple. That's why you see old remakes. Because the base game was usually made with floor of a 360/PS3 hardware.

Switch, as anyone with a brain from the beginning knew, would have the slow drip of Nintendo games, indies that you can get on any other devices 99 percent of the time, and a few special efforts like Ubi (the more Switch sales, the more of these special efforts you'll get), and remakes.

If you thought you were getting something else, you were obviously wrong from the get go.

You have portability, so the games you get you can take on the go. Some people will love it. Most couldn't care less.

So yes, Switch is everything people thought it was before launch. It's a high power portable that can plug into a tv to be a low power, last decade console.

Now, with that said, hopefully Nintendo continues to invest in studio expansion and IP's, so people who bought their Switch will get more content in years ahead as it ramps up, if it does. We're also at a point where many of the old guard are getting old, so they really need to ramp it up just to replace the ones who might leave in the next few years. Can't expect guys to be making games at 75 or 80. Then they also need more to increase the number of games.

So if you wanted a handheld, you got your wish. If you wanted a console, well, it's portable. That's the tradeoff and it's showcasing itself once again, as predicted.

Me, I wanted an actual Nintendo console powerful enough for any AAA game, and Nintendo games that could, if they chose, to use that power. If they wanted to have one ecosystem where it was possible for SOME games, if the developers chose, to also have their game on the handheld... great.

Two devices, one ecosystem. Best of both worlds, if you're interested. Instead we got a handheld whose main points are portability I give two craps about, and most of the games I already have or passed on my Wii U.

I play this thing nearly every day, currently Xenoblade 2. But there's no way I could pay for the online service though. That's gonna be the biggest problem for me come September. And that's where they're gonna lose me. There's no way i'm gonna pay to play Splatoon 2 or Mariokart. It all just sounds weird to me. I'm worried about Smash and Pokemon because of the online features. The free games are ok but I can get those on emulators or my snes mini if I want. Let's see what happens. For now I hope they keep releasing great single player games.
