Sea of Thieves is Rare's Fastest Selling Game of All Time

It has been confirmed that Xbox exclusive Sea of Thieves is Rare’s fastest selling game of all time. This new info came to light because of tracking firm The NPD Group.

Rare had masterpieces on N64 which deserve that spot, not this game.

timotim2185d ago

It is what it is...they have never made their publisher this much money or had this many gamers playing their game out the gate in any of their past releases on any platform...that says a lot.

Goldby2185d ago Show
vega2752185d ago

@ Goldby

I'm pretty sure NPD isn't tracking gamepass.

Eonjay2185d ago

Its a shame so many people bought it on hype thinking it was a excellent game because now their name has been tarnished and dragged through the mud.

Eonjay2185d ago

Also, EliteGamer was the site who tried to get ahead of this stink bomb by breaking embargo to say it was a 93. They are complicit with hyping a bad game. And they know it. These guys don't respect you, your time or your hard earned money.

yomfweeee2185d ago

Oh please, don't get "fastest selling" confused with total sales. Other Rare games sold millions and millions because the games sold themselves and were excellent. This was all hype.

2185d ago
timotim2184d ago (Edited 2184d ago )

@MarkoD

😆Nice way to cut off my quote to phrase it the way you want to haha. I said "out of the gate"...what I didn't say was overall or lifetime sales...keep pushing that agenda though, you're doing a terrible job.

@Eonjay

What are you even talking about? The game CONTINUED to sell well through the month...this is after countless betas and streamers being able to stream the game weeks BEFORE it shipped haha. It's STILL high on the list of most played games on Xbox Live! It's a good angle but we gotta do better. The game is being enjoyed by gamers, which is why we continue to play it. It's Rare's fastest selling game to date...instead of saying something positive, you rather reach for something negative, even when the evidence doesn't back you up...

@Yom

Don't put words in my mouth sir. I know and meant exactly what I said...its you who is confused here, not me. I said fastest selling, and that's exactly what it is. No need to debate.

2184d ago
thejigisup2184d ago

Says that some gamers will buy anything when they've got not much else to play. How easily pleased some people are.

TheCommentator2184d ago

Especially since the game is the first to release on Game Pass, yet physical and digital sales still pushed this title above all others Rare has produced. SoT will do well with continued post launch support in spite of all the claims of, "too little, too late" and, "there's nothing to do".

Nice job, Rare, now bring on Perfect Dark!

Is fastest selling game really saying much when you look at their games? I mean you either have games that were made on the n64 at a time when games didn’t sell as well relative to today (not even factoring in the n64 install base); Or early 360 titles with a tiny install base. Not saying their games are bad quality wise, but they did not sell too good by today’s standards. So fastest selling doesn’t seem like a big deal when you look at their library of games. Where are the actual numbers though?

mikeslemonade2184d ago (Edited 2184d ago )

urthewalrus

I played enough games to know if I would like it or not. And I have chance to play it on PC. I play almost any notable game, so that's saying a lot if I'm not playing it.

Atanasrikard2185d ago

@Goldby How does that have anything to do with sales? Or are you saying people tried it with game pass and enjoyed it so much they ended up buying it? Doesn't that go against your fanboy narrative?

Isn't gaming supposed to be about having fun? Every single review I read about the game said the game was an absolute blast to play, then gave the game a low score for "reasons." Shouldn't fun trump all? I think it says a lot about certain people and their agendas, especially on this site, when they pretty much never have anything good to say about a certain system that isn't their system of choice.

2185d ago
Goldby2185d ago

im just stating that when it was first released, they were boasting over 2 million players, yet the sales only beat out QB.

the increase player pool from gamepass probably helped sell more copies because of the playerbase and because people got to try the game for either 10$ or in some cases free.

im not dismissing the sales at all, just that it is much easier now for games to get exposure, specially with game pass than games could get over a decade ago

UnHoly_One2185d ago

You said it man. The game is fun.

I don't deny that if you boil it down, all the quests are essentially the same.

But it's so much fun to play that it doesn't really matter.

I don't care what kind of review score it has. Hell I don't even know what I would give it. It's a weird game to score.

Just looking at the "content" of the game itself, from a solo perspective, it's hard to give it a high score. It's all the intangible stuff that happens mostly due to other players that keeps it interesting and creates all the excitement.

It's a unique game, hard to classify.

MattE2185d ago

Lol, cranky .. well done Rare

“Sea of Thieves is Rare's Fastest Selling Game of All Time“

Fastest selling and best selling are two different things. Sales could drop off the map for all we know.

Obscure_Observer2184d ago

@DarkVoyager

"Fastest selling and best selling are two different things. Sales could drop off the map for all we know."

True. But this game is far from "A flop" like many "Patchers wannabe" predicted based on forum goers hype.

yomfweeee2185d ago

It is only "fastest selling" which is literally a short term thing. It won't beat those N64 games overall.

showtimefolks2184d ago (Edited 2184d ago )

This proves 2 things Xbox fans are desperate for an exclusive. 2 of the best selling games on Xbox one as in exclusive wise PUBG/SOT both launched with bugs and glitches yet both sold well

I don't know if it's the peer pressure to buy them just to say Xbox has exclusives but if we reward those who make average games than don't expect things to change anytime soon

One day very soon most of the stuff we will get will be GAAS. Launch at full price during beta and charge even more on name of GAAS

Obscure_Observer2184d ago

@showtimefolks

"This proves 2 things Xbox fans are desperate for an exclusive. 2 of the best selling games on Xbox one as in exclusive wise PUBG/SOT both launched with bugs and glitches yet both sold well"

This proves nothing what you´re saying.

1 - Maybe some gamers are looking for a different and unique kind of experience in SoT that both Sony or Nintendo can´t provide.

2 - Like every single Open World game ever released! HZD included!

It´s just sad when a gamer feels bad for another gamer enjoying a game.

Gazondaily2184d ago

"I don't know if it's the peer pressure to buy them just to say Xbox has exclusives"

Lol you're kidding me. You think there's peer pressure to buy those games? What an awful argument. How on earth is that a valid explanation in your head?

A lot of a sub par games sell well. And we've had plenty of examples on PS4 too. Just look at Knack, The Order, Driveclub and GT Sport.

showtimefolks2184d ago (Edited 2184d ago )

Septic

Gt sports is awesome and free content sometbing xbox fans know nothing about as forza charges for everything

Rest i agree with

Let's see one console with less exclusives meaning whatever launches has an higher chance of selling

Kiwi662184d ago

@MakoD so first you say in your reply to @timotim "no Sea of Thieves isn't a game" but then in your reply to @showtimefolks you say "I said during the beta that it was a 5-6 game" so which is it, is it a game or not, because it seems that you change your opinion based upon who you reply to

every COD titles sells big numbers, but it doesn't mean it's better than other games who didn't sold as much. Some games appeals better for a bigger population of gamers compared to others. And remember that's US only if I'm not mistaken.

Plus gaming is way more main stream now than it was in the late 90s/early 00s.

At least Rare are sure to get more funds for their next games with those sales numbers.

2184d ago
eagle212184d ago

Well Donkey Kong Country sold over 9.3 million copies on SNES. Let's see if this comes close. :P

Xavi4K2184d ago

Sales say else get over yourself

Teflon022184d ago

Xbox doesn't get exclusives much so it makes sense. Plus it's a online game, it's kinda how it goes on Xbox

JEECE2184d ago

A. N64 had a surprisingly small install base (it only got to about 32 million by the end). MS doesn't release numbers, but I'm guessing XONE has already surpassed N64's total.

B. I can't prove this empirically, but I think most would agree that the average age of XONE owner is significantly higher than N64 owners at the time, which makes a lot of preordering/launch purchases more viable than back in the day.

letsa_go2184d ago

The N64 sold less than the xbox one, so it kind of makes sense.

Very impressive and well deserved Rare.

It was a direct shotgun blast to the naysayers talking about game pass would hurt sales.

It ends up outselling all ps4 exclusives and nintendo exclusives in march only beatin by Far cry 5.

"It was a direct shotgun blast to the naysayers talking about game pass would hurt sales.

Please don't act like this is the best selling game of all time.

Do you know how many it sold roughly? it may have been one of the best selling games in March but that isnt saying much unless there are concrete numbers. I'm not convinced this game sold well / has sales numbers to brag about.

EDIT: i'm getting disagrees left right and centre yet no one is able to tell me how many copies it sold.

ONESHOTV22185d ago

well not trolling but you shouldn't be talking about the best selling game because I know no PS exclusives aren't even in the top 5, wow the GT3 on the PS2 is in the top 50 last place that is.

vega2752185d ago

@ mervin

So you say NPD is lying and you know better than them that this game flopped. Please tell us your source........ is it vgchartz?

2185d ago
ZeroX98762184d ago

US is only a fraction of the market. I find it funny when the switch or PS4 sells more, where the US is the prime region for Xbox sales.

@mervin43

"Do you know how many it sold roughly? it may have been one of the best selling games in March but that isnt saying much unless there are concrete numbers. I'm not convinced this game sold well / has sales numbers to brag about."

Well, according to NPD (EUA) SoT is sitting at 8th position for 2018 Top Ten best selling games! When you have 6 multiplat games on that list, says pretty much a LOT how well SoT is selling on Xbox One consoles.

rainslacker2184d ago

Can't give concrete numbers, but I'd say after the first week, since it had 2 million players, that it's likely that it didn't have more than 2 million in sales. Kind of depends on how many of those players were from one copy played on multiple accounts, and how many consumed it through Game pass. Other numbers which aren't available. Obviously, since players doesnt equal sales, the game didn't sell more than 2 million in that first week, and I haven't seen any official or respectfully sourced numbers since that player count announcement.

Obscure_Observer2184d ago

@rainslacker

"Can't give concrete numbers, but I'd say after the first week, since it had 2 million players, that it's likely that it didn't have more than 2 million in sales."

2 millions or not, this news blows your prediction that this game wouldn´t sell if wasn´t avaliable for 10 bucks on Game Pass.

Just like armchair analysts predicted that Xbox One games wouldn´t sell because it´s avaliable on PC, this news falls like a hammer to their heads. Lol.

The_Jackel2185d ago (Edited 2185d ago )

bet if the reviews werent held back this would be a totally different song and dance. ;)

vega2752185d ago

So review came out a month after the game released???

The_Jackel2184d ago

they deliberately didnt send out review copies to journos ect and made them wait til release day if they did and reviews went up a week before release not as many would have got the game.
when a new game comes out that people have been waiting for when the peek of the games sales?
when the game is new

and dont give the its an online game as other online games have had private servers or had the server open for review proposes.

vega2752184d ago

You your saying all the sales for this game came from the sameday the game released because in your mind. Had they saw the reviews on the sameday it would have stopped them from buying the game. Thats sone logic there.

Kind of funny that it was still selling after the reviews came out. So what happened then?

TheCommentator2184d ago

Because nobody had seen or played the Beta before the reviews came out... and nobody listened to Rare talk openly, weeks before launch, about having the core gameplay in place but adding significantly post-release either? Please.

Your song and dance is wrong, and clearly you won't change even though this was all easy to find information and the game is doing well.

DJStotty2184d ago

@Jackal

Didnt send out review copies? Didnt most people that got the game play the beta?

So surely they bought the game off of their own experiences, rather than listening to some half assed review of a person's opinion of the game?

Couldn't reply to your original comment but since you asked I'll just leave this here.

Why does it matter that Sea of Thieves "outsold all PS exclusives in March" as the OP mentioned? Which is who I was responding to but perhaps you didn't read his comment. Is talking about sales ok as long as Microsoft is "winning"? Its not a matter of if it needs to, it defenitly wont.

DJStotty2183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

@offroad

I read his comment, and i read yours. I asked a simple question. Nothing to do with anyone elses comments otherwise i would have replied to them.

You stated "lets see if it outsells all PS4 exclusives in April" so i asked "why does it need to"

which still you have not answered

How disappointing this is to hear especially after Rare Replay flopped in sales

Godmars2902185d ago

The only saving grace is knowing that overall the industry wasn't the size it is now. Was a smaller install base.

Atanasrikard2185d ago

Whew, yes! Thank god there were fewer gamers back then otherwise people would think a game is bought because people think it's fun. /s

Godmars2902184d ago

So are you two saying that Rare was "never all that"? That they've only ever been overhyped because this is their best selling game ever?

The industry wasn't as large as it in now. That's it. Regarding only numbers without context has lead to the BS where SP are dismissed for not being as "profitable" as MP with MT and loot boxes.

Crows9012h ago(Edited 12h ago)

40 million have set sail...that's great. How many are sailing now? Monthly active users....when it actually matters. How many people purchased the game is another important number.

Gamingsince198112h ago

You don't get numbers like that from MS mouth pieces, they just like to say stuff like "this game was looked at 129 million time, the biggest amount of people browsing a game of this genre on xbox gamepass ever in the last 3 weeks compared to before gamepass was out (small print only 2 million bothered playing longer than 20 seconds and only 100 people are playing it concurrently)

It's all smoke and mirrors

nibblo11h ago

There are usually around 10,000 concurrent users on Steam not counting Xbox or PS but really it doesn't matter as long as there are enough people on the servers to play which there always were and will be for a long time now with the PS players coming on board. Same goes for how many people bought it and how many are on GP, we aren't the accountants of these console companies so why would we care?

Hofstaderman10h ago

Reporting on MAU stats is very misleading. Other companies publish units sold, MS cannot or will not due to Game Pass. We all know that their prior startegies have not panned out so now they have to actually sell games on other consoles. In any case, SoT is doing impressive preorders on PS5 and will very likely motivate Satya to release more games other than the four indicated games on their competitor's consoles. Take note Phil is radio silent....

Jingsing3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Yeah Microsoft would tell you the start menu has had 1 billions clicks on Windows 11 to let you know it is beating Windows 10 when the reality is something else. 10,000 concurrent steam users is enough for me to extrapolate there aren't millions playing this on console either. Lets not forget the motivation to bring this to PS5 is already an admission of poor player count. I'd prefer it is Microsoft would just say nothing when it comes to numbers as it makes them look stupid while trying to make everyone else look like an idiot.

40 Mil across Stream, Windows 10, and Xbox. Healthy numbers for sure, but when PC is the biggest platform, I expected more. It’ll be interesting to see how it does on PlayStation. Very well could be double that player count in 6 months with PS too. It’s crazy for developers to skip the most popular platform, not sure why they’d want to, but they must have had their rea$ons.
