The Xbox One X is a fantastic media player, but it's status as a great video game console is very much up for debate.

Lol, there is no competition. X is doubling the resolution of PS4 Pro which is the only ""wannabe competitor"". If you want a 4k gaming Console this is the only option.

Sadly though your entire article is kind of FUD though, because while X does do gaming well, it doesn't do media very well. The lack of Dolby Vision makes it a disappointing media player for Bluray and even Netflix or Amazon Video. It is better than any other console, but the Apple TV 4k is a much better media player.

People love to spout the same nonsense over and over again on n4g, like a flock of deranged parrots suffering from tourette's, when the truth is there are 4 big exclusives coming in the next 6 months. State of decay 2(which has a much bigger budget, Dev team and scope than the 1st game, and is now using unreal engine 4), crackdown 3 (1st game ever to utilize cloud compute for physics/destruction etc), sea of thieves (rares return to game development), and, in a couple of weeks, PUBG (biggest online game ever). Now whether you like those games is a different argument, but to say the Xbox has no exclusives is simply false. And how many more AAA exclusives does Sony have in the same period?

I would disagree that the X is a disappointing console. I like the xbo and the games i have for it. playing them on the X would be even better thanks to the improvements in the hardware that translate to the software as well.

The disappointment would be if NONE of the games i already have would play but that is not the case. Overall it is a better xbox experience than they initially offered. What's there to be disappointed in?

In one thread there was a comparison list of 2017 ps4 exclusive games to switch exclusive games. i only had 1 one from the list for ps4 (horizon) the others just arent my thing. I buy what i like and play what i like. As it turns out I dont have many games for either the ps4 or xbo. 15 for the PS4 (14 of which are exclusives) and 23 for xbo (13 of which are exclusive). I may have more exclusive games for ps4 but i have more games overall for xbo. It just works out that way because i play only SP games on PS4 and MP games on xbo.

I like to play and support both platforms.

Um State of decay ok but its on PC. Crackdown 3 ok again will be playable on PC and the "cloud compute" is in question right now as it still hasnt released and its been like 4yrs. Sea of thieves is also questionable and again on PC so not exclusive and PUBG is only timed it will be coming to Ps4 after Xbone. Now to your PsNow and your claim of playing Playstation exclusives on PC and Smart TVs. Not sure if PsNow is on PC I know remote play is and its just a streaming app you still need a Ps4 for that. PsNow doesnt have any Ps4 exclusive it has Ps3, Ps2, Ps1, PSP and Psvite exclusives but maybe it has Knack so I guess that counts but how does that help your argument? Ps4 has actually has two or three exclusives coming in the next 6 months and more on the way not mention they've had already had a stellar year in that department. So again not sure how you're helping your argument bring up the lenghty list of Ps4 2017 exclusives to the table.

You can pretend there is no competition but of course in reality there is competition from both Sony and Nintendo and Microsoft is losing to both.

You can focus on resolution like Microsoft has and get outsold by the competition that focuses on games. The success of the Switch is the perfect example of what sells consoles, it's games not resolution.

That is factually incorrect. PS4 had more exclusives from the very beginning. During the first years of this generation we had a website that was counting the exclusives of all consoles(they stopped the website a couple of years into the generation). PS4 was ahead the whole time. The exclusive gap has only gotten wider the whole generation.

What you are recalling is the period of “drought” when both consoles had a slow down.

Dolby vision is just a HDR mode its not that big a deal. But you are wrong its not doubling the resolution either 1800p upscaled isnt double its just higher, Assassins creed Origins runs in 1800p on XboneX and 1440p on Ps4 Pro. They both upscale and honestly the difference in picture quailty isnt that big of a deal at least enough to spend 100$ on, to me at least. There is no true 4k gaming console they both have draw backs and short comings.

I do give you credit though for calling out the nature of the quality of the X1's 4K media content capabilities though.

I find the TV's apps for netflix or amazon to be more efficient than the consoles, although there isn't a lot of high end audio being delivered that way to decide if it's better there. My TV can even play 4K through the USB or local network pretty well, but none of that has full Atmos support.

I'd say that Xbox is a decent entry level 4K media player that could get better over time through updates. However, unless someone has the most basic of 4K TV's, they can get the same features on their TV itself more often than not.

It is quite easy to bash the Xbox One lately. Where are the great games? It does not matter if the Xbox One X is powerful because it will be lacking new games. If MS can get their head out of the butt, then we might see new games that will also be on PC. Sea of Thieves could be really good. I hope it does well for MS. I'M having great fun with my original ps4 playing games like horizon, gts, ac:origins, until dawn, order 1886 to name a few all looking gorgeous, we also have detroit, gow, days gone, tlou pt2 to name a few in the future. Nxt gen is when 4k gaming properly starts and I'm glad I spoke of this mid gen BS with my wallet.
Seriously pro was half arsed, x is slightly better but nothing to show it off apart from 1 or 2 games and pretty much half arsed but granted a little better than playstation attempt.
My 2cents save your mid gen upgrade money for a higher end model of 4k TV nearer the 2019 time frame and wait for nxt gen 2019, trust me that 18ths/24mths will fly by, plus they'll actually be a boat load of 4k content available movie wise and proper 4k games built for 4k not games made for Base models and then patched for 4k

I choose games over pixels both the PS4 and Switch offer more of what I want GAMES!!
