Review: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - Movies Games and Tech

Movies Games and Tech writes: It’s almost ironic that Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle only exists because of time travelling misadventures, since anyone living in the past would laugh in Nintendo’s face if a company representative travelled back in time, to let people know it was letting Ubisoft run wild with its sacred Mario franchise. Not only that, but the very thought of a team up between the Mushroom Kingdom crowd and Rabbids just seems like a recipe for trouble. But is that the case or was it wise of Nintendo to throw Mario and co in the deep end with a group of deranged beings?

there is no way this game is a 6. The game is awesome, and I know it isn't for everyone but it is objectively a solid 8, subjectively I'd give it a 10.
The graphics are crisp without any aliasing (even in portable mode) It runs smooth with 0 slowdown or stutter. It is content rich with replayability, in between matches there is a nice exploratory element in the over world in which you try to collect coins and weapons, there are simple but varied puzzles to do this. In battle things are fast and chaotic with a nice challenge curve. The story is ridiculous so far but I wouldn't call that a bad thing.
Also, the rabbids are really not that annoying at all in it, which was my greatest fear with the game
What sites will do for clicks...

"it is objectively a solid 8, subjectively I'd give it a 10."

Lol

yellowgerbil2419d ago

yes, when you look at games objectively it is a SOLID game. There are no bugs, no lag, smooth graphics, and no slowdown. It is also has varied gameplay.
These are objective observations, without oppinion. They are FACTS. The game is solid. A 6/10 is a D in the American school system, this game is not a D.

Blastoise2419d ago

Yeah except games are judged on more than performance and bugs?

This game is not "objectively" an 8. That is the truth. Whether you want to believe it or not.

Opinions

Shocking...someone doesn't like it and gives his fair thoughts on it

yellowgerbil2419d ago

everyone has an opinion, A review is not an opinion. That is why gaming "journalism" is such a joke, no standards and no credibility just like this site "moviestechandgames"
opinion has its place but when a game that is averaging 8-10 reviews gets a 6, it is just for clicks. I don't care for Halo but if I was to play halo 600 and its mechanics were solid, and the game played exactly as advertised there would be no way I would call it a 6. That is disingenuous.

bluefox7552419d ago

@yellowgerbil Yes, a review is an opinion. A large part of the score is fun factor. If the reviewer didn't enjoy the game, he's going to give it a lower score.

deafdani2419d ago

With you, when it comes to Nintendo, it's a fair thought if it's a low score, but if they give the game a high score, they're overrating it and giving it a free pass just because it's Nintendo.

-Foxtrot2419d ago

@deafdani

No I say when I think something is being overpraised when I think it's been overpraised...fact

I don't think this looks anything special...in fact I think it's been rated higher just because of it's Mario appeal. If it was a game where the Rabbids crossed into a human like world which were brand new and just basic made up human characters I don't think it would have been anything special or done that well. Opinions.

I don't think Zelda BotW is anything special.

I'm looking forward to Super Mario Odyssey

I want the new Metroid Samus Returns

I want a new Animal Crossing

I want to hear more about the new Pokemon Switch game

Can you see where I'm going with this....OPINIONS.

Perjoss2419d ago

"fair thoughts"

that's just your opinion :)

-Foxtrot2419d ago

@Perjoss

Not really...I said fair thoughts as in "well he's not trolling or doing the review for hits", he takes his time to explain why other then just hating on it for the sake of it, no reasons backing him up.

I don't think you know what objective and subjective mean...

yellowgerbil2419d ago (Edited 2419d ago )

I do. Do you?
objective means without personal influence of opinion or bias.
To rate a game objectively you need to look at things quantifiable. Game mechanics, graphics, and game performance can all be looked at objectively. Objectively the game is SOLID
To subjectively rate a game it would be like giving a Bethesda game a 10, when we all know the mechanics are buggy and broken, graphical glitches abound and the game encounters massive slowdown.
Objectively THAT would be a 6, but it IS fun so knocking it up a few notches makes sense if you enjoyed it. Subjectivity should only be used to bolster an objectively bad game to go "yeah, it is flawed but still a ton of fun". When you do the opposite, like with this game it comes off as just dishonest "the game is perfect, but I didn't like the genre, so 6/10"
Subjectivity is something that should never negatively impact a review, only positively, like giving your personal seal of approval. Otherwise you get things like tipper gore destroying a game over a little cartoon violence...

thegamefox932419d ago

Who the fuck cares..It's an 85 on metacritic. Move on with your life

deafdani2419d ago

" but it is objectively a solid 8, subjectively I'd give it a 10."

You can't give an objective score to a review. A review is, by definition, subjective.

Not that I agree or disagree with your general assessment, because I haven't played Mario + Rabbids. But just because this guy gave it a lower score than the majority of people doesn't mean he's out to boycott the game or something. Maybe he just didn't like the particular game mechanics...

Eltortugagames2419d ago

Nah it is very much so better then a 6

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2419d ago

7 should be the lowest score this game should get. A 6 pretty much tell me you are playing a genre you wouldn't enjoy.

For me so far it's would be somewhere between at 9-9.5

yellowgerbil2419d ago

Exactly. But clickbait reviews aside it did what Nintendo needed it to do, it convinced me to buy a switch. Till I saw this game at E3 I was far from convinced. Nintendo games generally aren't my cup of tea. This game hit all the right notes for me, xcom but with humor.

TallonIV2419d ago

Don't agree, the game is at least an 8.5

sk8ofmnd2419d ago

The thing is, this game mainly appeals to nintendo fans... Ppl who arent will see it, and without playing say "meh its not for me" no matter how amazing it might be.

Lockdown5552418d ago

...and somebody doing a review should have played the game and not just saw it and thought meh.

Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope Review - IGN

When a game hits on a good idea, some developers are content to play it safe for the sequel, making a few refinements but largely stick to what worked the first time. That totally makes sense. But Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is not that kind of sequel; even though Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle surprised us all with its smart XCOM-style tactics in Nintendo clothing, this followup maintains its best ideas but reinvents itself to the point where it immediately feels very different. It’s bigger and better in nearly every way, with a more freeform and customizable take on combat and an almost completely rethought overworld that’s much less linear and absolutely packed with puzzles. The story’s all over the place and the Switch can’t always handle everything smoothly, but it’s a fantastic game that can be played as either an enjoyable cakewalk or a deep, demanding tactical challenge, all while maintaining its zany sense of humor.

The amazing thing about Mario is that this character is still meaningful, while at the sametime being anything.

How Mario + Rabbids Transformed the Rabbids From Menace to Mascot

When Mario + Rabbids creative director Davide Soliani first started working on Kingdom Battle, he was given express instructions from Ubisoft: Rabbids do not, under any circumstances, talk. But now, for the sequel Sparks of Hope, they do.
