According to a recent update, the legendary Mario character, of Nintendo, is no longer a plumber.

You wanted backstory and I just provided you link for that. There are many other links from official and non official sources on Google. By the way, what kind of backstory did you want? A multiple pages of essay explaining what date and where Mario was born in, what his parents name are, where did he study, what kind of food he like to eat, when he goes to bed, why Luigi is taller than him...? Kindda unreasonable don't you think?

Many iconic characters such as Sonic, Crash, and Link didn't need complicated backstories to make their games fun. And if Mario keep selling, why would they abandon it? It is just like asking Sony to abandon God of War or MS to abandon Halo, which has 0 chance in hell of happening.

Mario is rotund and basic because when the character was first introduced he needed to be drawn and animated with 2 colours.

Mario wears red and blue, because those colours contrast well against each other and against most basic background colours, because Mario was "coloured in" with an extremely limited colour palette.

That is the extent of Mario's "back story". It's amazing he's still going really.

Come on Maro is multi talented man he can beat Link and Cloud, he can run as fast as Sonic, play soccor, play tennis, jump over people and animals, he is in Olympia he can be racoon, he can use different types of weapons, he can fly, jump as ninjas and now have hat that can do anything and more dengrous than "007" villian hat. The little guy is definitely multi-talented. He probably quit being a plumber since the first Mario game. The amount of coins he had collected since the first game upto now had probably made him into a billionaire. He was never meant to be a plumber. Back in videogame prehistoric times, they needed a way to assemble a few pixels to look like a colorful character, and the little guy with the stache, overalls and red cap was the result. Kinda looks like a plumber, and dives into pipes. Why not?
