Microsoft's final sales pitch for Xbox One X falls flat

To say the least, preorders are looking good for Microsoft. One X is number one on Amazon at the time of me writing this with Switch at #17 and #22 and PS4 at #38. It's definitely to be expected since it's new hardware, but I think it's safe to say that a bad showing hasn't hurt the excitement of early adopters. Could be genuine excitement, could be scalpers preparing for the holiday season, could be a mix.

Remains to be seen how it'll play out after the Scorpio edition and holiday season are done, but the fact still stands that there's enough excitement to get Microsoft excited about the launch.

I'm not sure why people keep saying that. The fact the ps had games to play was the point. Nobody at Sony said they were going to split their user base with pro exclusives. Exclusives help both the x1 and the 1x and releasing a console off the back of little exclusive push does more harm than good.

Difference is PS4 had plenty of exclusives already with the stunning Horizon coming in a couple months, not only that a bunch of other high budget games on the horizon. Even with all this, alot of people ignored the Pro and it still gets some mixed reception a year later. The post clearly was implying Xbox has barely done anything over the past couple years and you would think they were putting all their resources towards scorpio to help it launch, but they clearly did not.

It took more than 15 hrs for pre orders to sell out on Gamestop.com and Walmart.com. Target still has pre orders available online for the very limited (says Microsoft) Scorpio Edition.

Remember the day one edition Xbox One you could buy years after release. It may not be the same with the Scorpio Edition but for something that people were so excited about pre orders weren't as quick as say the Nes Classic Edition or even the Nintendo switch.

They're both Xbox one and Ps4 so are you saying you're pretty sure Xbox one will outsell ps4 most months after the release of the X ? That's a pretty big statement even though its only Npd. As it stands, worldwide it's pretty much a conclusion that the ps4 will continue to be the better selling console of the two.

I personally think Xbox will do quiet well this holiday but they've missed a trick. There was this fuss about Phil Spencer trip to Japan and it was set up nicely for them to announce a decent looking exclusive game from Japan. I know most Xbox gamers don't care about those but Phil knows how important adding those helps especially outside the US. They had some great Japanese collaborations although, those weren't always commercially successful, they help in giving the Xbox that diversity and uniqueness if you like.

I think history us going to repeat it self. Microsoft thought having "the world's most powerful console" at the launch of the original xbox would drive sales for their console but most gamers didn't care. They went where the games were at. The core Xbox gamers will surely upgrade but I highly doubt the rest of the gaming community will ditch their consoles and shell out $500+ to get a slight upgrade on third party games.

There is one single reason that kept and keeps me from switching to a gaming pc instead of going with ps4 - the exclusives. But i never felt the need to game with xbox gamers via crossplay. One thing is sure, it never has been power that made a console more succesful than another, nor will it be networks, controllers or bc or crossplay because the average consumer doesn't care about that. You need to have games that can only be played on that platform to make people outside of xbox home turf say " hey i have to get an xbox 1 to play these games" because otherwise, for example here in germany(and most of europe) people will have no thought of buying an xbox.

This is what Nintendo did with the NES Classic, and a lot of their amiibos. I don't think they are necessarily doing that with the switch, but I think they are being conservative with how many they make. If they flood the stores with them, people will walk by them and not give them a second look. But if they keep them scarce, they will see them in the wild and have to buy it because of the excitement of finding something in demand/rare. I am sure it is part of our psychology. Fear of missing out, or like the feeling of regret is a bitch. "Fuck! I should have bought that when I saw it on the shelf!"

No it does make sense. I actually work in a game store and the preorders selling out are not indicative of much. If I told you I sold 34% or my stock which we did this weekend it sounds impressive. Here's the thing, my store is the biggest in my city and we ONLY got 18 available. 6 presold units doesn't sound all that impressive though.

Our Switch launch was over 200+ units so not sure about you, but, 250 >>>> 18. Even if we get 2nd and 3rd run preorders lets say another 100 units not the Scorpio edition for comparisons sake. 250 >>>>> 120 or so.

Based on my weak allotment its a piece of cake to say I will SELL OUT. But selling out of the meagre amount we are getting is not much of an achievement.

I've never said the X1 was a bad system, and I rarely criticize MS games by saying they're bad, and in fact think most of their 1st party stuff is very good to exceptional.

But I still get a lot of people who think all I do is hate on MS, even when I'm defending them against rampant Sony trolls.

I don't have a love of MS itself, think Spencer and his team are completely inept at their jobs, and overall, am really only as vocal as I am now because I invested in an X1 and it's not getting the support they promised which made me dive in in the first place.

But around here, if you admit or obviously prefer a different console, even though you think the actual hardware and some software is fine from the other, you are a hater because you want things to be able to use that less preferable console and make one's purchase justified.

Very rarely will anyone actually address any criticism I have about MS without automatically resorting to "you're a hater", when in fact, I can see things from different perspectives. They may not change my mind, but I recognize subjective opinion versus blind loyalty, and will never disparage against someone who has a good reason to like what they do. But I do see a lot of fan boys(on both sides) who can really express those reasons with enough clarity to make them seem anything more than blind loyalist.

To me, even if one likes the few games MS puts out, there is still a huge deficiency in their software output, and it's been dwindling every year. Their 2nd party isn't filling in their lack of developers, and it seems MS is trying to make it seem like they have all this content exclusively to fill in for their inability to create it themselves, which to me is just kind of crappy because it's disingenuous, and the bulk of what they showed had a big ol' asterix attached to the word "exclusive".

I would expect exclusives on the x hidden behind terms only able to run on Xbox one x.
Always look between the lines with Microsoft.
There will be nothing impresssive with Xbox one games running at a better res than Xbox one games... they have put no dent in the market yet so they will not be leaning on that alone.

microsoft is acting as if they drank too much of the nintendo-kool-aid. thinking they can get away with their xoxbox as clueless nintendo is also competing. but as clueless as nintendo is, they know that without their stale first parties they can call it quits. there are many people out there who like nintendo games. while microsoft got no more capable studios behind them. molyneux anyone? not that he was capable, but he was one to deliver more unused game concepts.

i am beginning to think more and more that there are 3 possible microsoft mindsets at work here:
1) they want to produce a gadget that flops to cut edges around tax bills.
2) they are no longer a video game market contender. they want to sell their streaming services to families in the living room. games are just a mere side product.
3) they are seriously convinced that their xoxbox will offer something the market wants. in this case their butthurt reactions will be epic.

Maybe they are going with 2 and 3... making them basically a second nintendo: no market contender, but still wanting to sell as much as possible to the core game market customers.

so far this gen the xbox has survived thanks to offering some really good bundles and sometimes some really deep discounts. Why do they want to try and make a high end machine that sony will easily be able to beat in price? I have every console and all I can say is there's always gonna be pros and cons to everything. That's life. Xbox one will be the best console for multi plats and their exclusives plus built in 4k player and Xbox live. Sony will be the "dynamic 4k" but they will have alot of exclusives. Some good. Some bad. OK, here's what I never understood in this horrible "console war". I live in the U.S. The Xbox One and PS4 (I own both) are basically neck and neck. I agree that there has been a lack of exclusives, but apparently where I'm from that doesn't make much of a difference. If exclusives are the be all end all, why isn't it crushing the Xbox in the U.S.? This is meant as a serious question I would like some opinions on. It's not rhetorical.

Maybe it is just that in the us, there are more loyal fans left from xbox sunnier days. The 360 sold approx 50 million alone in north america, while ps3 only pushed 30 million. Even if it may not be a big lead in favor for ps4 over there right now, we have seen a huge shift in marketshare, with the situation probably becoming more severe by the end of the gen.

This site could be so much more enjoyable if people could just have an open dialogue about to good and bad about both consoles. Instead it's comment after comment of links pointing to sales figures and trashing whichever console you don't own. For example, I have both (actually a Switch also). I wish the PS4 would add features as often as Xbox does, and I wish Xbox would add more games. If we just keep defending what we've purchased, neither company is going to feel much pressure to improve in either area. The mistake MS is making is in thinking that powefull hardware draws developers and i'm sure it does to a certain point. But what devs really like is a large install base that equalls high sales numbers. Your console could be a damn supercomputer but if you sold 15000 of them good luck getting devs to invest on games for it.

When you have nothing to show but controllers your show will be boring and flat. No one thinks the X should have it's own exclusive games the pro doesn't but the ps4 platform has tons of exclusive games that run on all ps4 consoles. MS have no compelling exclusive content. Just because a 4k blu ray player is included doesn't make it incredible. Who buys blu rays ? I stream and buy a console for games anything else is just an extra. Ms want to be a service and get all apps and devs to put their content on xb so they don't have to. You can't spin a terrible show its just reality. Unless you want a 4k mine craft and multiplat console for $500.
