Trash talking is one thing, but it's totally different when someone says a racist comment because they are angry. In the gaming industry, you get angry because you feel embarrassed and you retort to the most hateful shit possible, and in that moment of anger you express your true feelings. I've been called the N word numerous times-particularly whIle playing COD, but it never bothered me because I'm actually mixed. There's a lot of " African American" gamers who aren't mixed, so imagine how they feel; especially after they finished gaming while they're lying down getting ready to go to sleep.

There's a big difference between trash talk and talk that is meant to offend someone.

Trash talk is trashing someones level of skill or how they play the game, making them feel as if they suck at the game compared to yourself or others.

When you start making personally targeted and offensive statements, such as insulting someone based on race, ethnicity, sexuality, or anything of that sort, then you've moved into another territory.

This has nothing to do with being a "pu**y" you tough guy. You're someone that sees no boundary between the two, and that blindness is a surefire way to exacerbate situations. Same thing with something like basketball pick up games in real life. Trash talk someones skills to hopefully affect their output, but I'm sure you wouldn't be trash talking using words like ni**er or fa**ot because you know damn well that could lead to something you won't be ready for.

You are correct in the legal sense, but I tend to believe society should expect freedom of speech in our daily lives as well. I do not like companies (although yes they do have a right) deciding what I am or am not allowed to say. I would think most reasonable people would agree diversity of thought is important, regardless of whether you agree with what is said.

See the first amendment does not guarantee free speech to a citizen. It is instead a regulation on government to prevent censorship and control over what can be shown. Movies, games, and other media rely on first amendment protections. Citizens are not protected by the first amendment as it literally has nothing to do with them.

As others have stated Blue Holes servers are NOT a public forum. The use of racist, xenophobic, sexist or homophobic crap on a server not owned by you when they don't want that kind of behaviour is not an infringement on your free speech. I was part of a MOHAA/CoD1 clan that had a very strict set of rules about language and how you speak to others on OUR server, if you weren't willing to toe the line we simply kicked you if you come back and continue we just served you a ban. Were we really limiting free speech? Or were we free to do as we please with the servers we paid for and ran?

Why don't you look back at your own American history and the ordeal "Communist Sympathizers" went through? Was that not the government limiting the exchange of ideas? Oh wait it was, weird huh? Quick story. So I'm playing Super Street fighter on the 360 and moping ppl w/E Honda like I used to do in the arcade, except I used to play w/ Ken. After 30 seconds of waiting for the next match, I found myself playing against another player who also used W Honda. In the middle of the near perfect round, this dude starting going on saying " N " this, and "N" that. I payed him no mind, being that he was frustrated but after going back and forth(I did not say anything racist to him, just proceeded to tell him I was mixed ) he proceeded to go into political and social issues pertaining to blacks and whites in America. After sending numerous message, and receiving numerous message from him, we actually sent each other friends requests. He invited me to play call of duty, and then Tomb Raider guardian of light. I had a healthy respect for him because he had LEGIT reasons for feeling the way he did. I told him that expressing his views wasn't necessarily wrong, but the platform by which he choose, coupled w/the fact that it was out of frustration because of losing, wasn't the right thing to do. Not saying that I'm Mr. IQ, but everyone doesn't have the intellect to have a civilized conversation with someone who spews a bunch of hatred and vitriol. I hope this story sheds some light on the subject.

Given the loose terminology of "racism" these days. Not a great idea and easily abused. We live in an era where a good chunk of people actually think Muslims are race, and any criticism in their direction is "islamophobic". Hell, in some cases even anything critically constructive is seen as disparaging an entire group of people simply because there's those who don't like what they're hearing or seeing, ignoring any and all context on the matter just to silence and antagonize an opposition.
