Sony Says the Days of a 13-Year PS2 Lifecycle Are Over

The PlayStation 4 may be outpacing the PlayStation 2 when it comes to units sold, but Sony doesn't think the PS4 will repeat the 13-year PS2 lifecycle.

ok ..13 years is a bit much....but 5 years is almost thievingly short (if they plan to release/ announce shting nasty like PS5) ...i want pS4 for at least 3 more years from now to be active with exclusives

darthv722460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

Keep in mind that just because a new system releases that does not mean all of a sudden the previous is no longer on the market. sony released the PS1 in 95 and then the PS2 in 2000. 5 years between 1 & 2 and then released the PS3 in 06 making it 6 years between 2 & 3. Even when a new system releases, there is always a transition period of at least another 2-3 years.

If PS5 were to release in 2019 that would be 6 years after the PS4 (3 after the Pro) and PS4 would likely still receive support for another 2-3 years. What Sony is talking about in terms of 13 year cycle is "support" technical support and repairs / replacements if needed. not specifically about continued game development.

In terms of sales, I figure the PS4 will likely surpass the original PS1 but not the PS2. It's a much different time now than it was for the PS2. If sony can reduce the PS4 price to $99.99 then by all means it has a chance to pass the PS2.

conanlifts2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

Every new system releases with 1st party exclusives. Ps4 had killzone, knack then infamous etc. So while ps5 will not kill off all ps4 1st party games it will reduce it. Plus pro only launched last year, they should at least allow 3 years before ps5. My estimate is still 2020. If ps5 launches prior to that it will whether be $500+ or an 8tflop gpu with new cpu at most. 2020 would allow a lower price, new cpu and 10-12tflop gpu.

Welcome back Darth. . We missed you

Seraphim2459d ago

not only that darth but Sony continued to sell PS2 for a long time after the PS3 dropped. Also, companies, while continuing to thin released quite a few games for PS2 once the 3 was out. But yes, technical support, repairs, manufacturing, etc. That is all part of a life cycle. It's not limited to the PRIME years of a consoles' life.

I said we'd likely see a PS5 in 2020, 2019 at the soonest when the PS4 launched. With the addition of Pro I think that 2020 number is more accurate but either way the PS4 dropped Nov 2013 meaning that in '19 that would be 6 years + another 2-3 on shelf/support/etc making it a good 8-9 life cycle. As technology has advanced it's been easier to push life cycles further from a 5 year frame we saw earlier in gaming history to 6, 7, perhaps more in the future...

TWB2459d ago

I think 6 years is still little on the short side, so Im willing to bet that they are going for 7 years. We havent yet "hit the wall" this gen, where the consoles simply struggle with the new games. Though, we no longer see devs gawking over the "power" of the current gen (except for the premium models), so its safe to say we are over the half point this gen.

Its also true that the old systems simply wont die that quickly. Even PS3 got some AAA support 2 years after PS4 was released, and few years prior many devs had already expressed how the PS360 gen was stalling for too long.

Now that we're into x86 architecture there's no reason that future consoles won't be backwards compatible. I still want 5-6 year cycles though, beef them up a little in the meantime.

threefootwang2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

Agreed! With full backwards compatibility i wouldn't mind seeing updated consoles every 4-5 years. Say it was set up so that every console was rated for 2 cycles before developers can move on, I'd honestly be ok with that...just as long as each cycle is at least 4 years. Meaning each console would last at least 8 years before a replacement is technically required.

2460d ago
NapalmSanctuary2460d ago

@threefootwang
8 years is far too long for a couple of reason, not the least of which is how ancient the tech would be in the last 2-3 years of its life. It would end up arbitrarily holding the industry back. 6 years is a good maximum life span for a generation.

segamaniaco2460d ago

With the launch of ps5, sony and third party can make ps4 pro exclusive cross platform games, that wont be compatible with ps4 slim

This maybe boost the graphics of pro
By the time, i think there will be a ps4 pro slimmer (249$) and maybe an even slimmer ps4 slim (149$?) models in 2020.

Forward compatibility is also possible, buy one disc and play it on ps4 pro and ps5, then you can buy ps5 games even without having the machine

Microsoft will do that with that talk about ending generations, so if you put a xbox two disc on a xbox one s it should work (thats why it has a uhd drive)

narsaku2460d ago

Of course there is, why support backwards compatibility when you can charge full price for remasters?

100 dollar Bloodborne, "ultimate blood edition", coming for the ps5. There was a reason we didn't get a pro version. ;)

Ju2459d ago

Backwards compatibility is fine. But you will want those 60fps on your new shiny PS5 while ps4 will run 30. This is only possible if it's a new platform not just a generation

Eonjay2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

Well, this reminds me of those claims of no more generations from Microsoft. Thats doesn't make sense unless they don't plan to make a new Xbox. The only true way to escape generations is to release an upgradable unit (which is the very idea behind PC). And sense we know they are working on another Xbox already, the length of their current system should be around the same as Sony's. I agree I want at least 3 more years from both and to be honest, we probably all have enough content already or known to keep us busy for quite some time. Also, consider the following
Microsoft originally said that the Xbox One was developed to have a 10 year life cycle.
Bungie wants Destiny to last 10 years (did they mean on current gen?)
PlayStation generations last forever.

conanlifts2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

Ms did not mean no future exclusives. They just meant every console going forward will play older games. It doesnt mean the xbox one will play xbox 2 games.

Kribwalker2460d ago

It Makes Total Sense
It'll be like the iPhone or android phones, eventually they get too far behind and support drops for them, but you can carry everything forward with you to your next device. Like 3 years from now they stop supporting the OG Xbox one and the Scorpio becomes the lower end, and etc. They'll prolly support each version for 6-7 years and upgrade every 3-4

InKnight7s2460d ago

Sony always support its platform go check psp, ps1, ps2, ps3 amazing library even after stopped production. As so recent example, Persona 5 is released on ps3!!

Weeblordbad2460d ago

Sony had nothing to do with the development or publishing of Persona 5. I can also guarantee you that it's on the PS3 because they started work on that game before Catherine even came out, the idea that Sony had some hand in Persona 5 is insane. Ever wonder why Persona 5 has zero Pro Support?

subtenko2459d ago

no, ps3 time was pretty good. SO what if its longer to wait, they have more time to R&D, devs have more time to make stuff while learning for the future, and we save some money vs upgrading like we buy new iphones every year (which is now becoming 2 iphones every year for some people; RIDICULOUS)

The only people who want shorter console spans are the people with fewer games....that'd be xbox and nintendo people...

UKmilitia2459d ago

i really hope sony doesnt think they have to release another console becasue of one X,they dont becasue they have the killer line up

JHippy50002459d ago

Right. It seems the PS4 has not even been pushed to its limits yet. I'd expect the PS5 to have movie cgi level graphics like Transformers or Planet of the Apes

The 10th Rider2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

It'll be 20-30 years before a console has graphics similar to CGI of the new Planet of the Apes series.

2459d ago
JHippy50002458d ago

@fleecejohnson75 Hey it will not be that long. 20-30 years? Uncharted 4 is damn close besides the hair textures and wait until The Last of Us 2 comes out you will eat those words

The 10th Rider2457d ago

@JHippy5000,

You're absolute bonkers if you think the Last of Us 2 will be anywhere near Planet of the Apes. Movies like that are rendered using many computers with graphics cards that cost far more than a gaming console does.

There's not even a game that looks better than the 13 year old King Kong movie.

The 10th Rider2459d ago

Why is five years too short?

If you buy a $500 console every 7 years over 30 years instead of buying a $500 console every 5 years over 30 years, you're only saving like $28.50 a year.

30/7*$500/30 = $71.42 a year

30/5*$500/30 = $100 a year

Considering that's less than half the cost of a new game, it seems like an incredibly small price to pay to have your games consistently running on newer and more up-to-date technology instead of 10 year old tech.

RosweeSon2459d ago

I don't think that's asking too much besides gran turismo 6 etc came out so late in the ps3's life I'm expecting big things for PS4 over next 2-3 years and I'll happily stick to this current generation I'm in no rush to move on again yet barely just phasing out last gen. 360/PS3 gone (well 360 is boxed up) got my Wii U to finish and not far off then Vita? Or 3DS then it's PS4/Switch game on.
Seriously tho PS4 is gonna be around for a while remember when God of war 1 came out on ps2 apart from it not being HD it looked truly great and as good as anything else anywhere at the time.... then then release God of war 2... still on ps2, PS4 is barely just getting to the great part and it'll continue for another couple of years GT sport this year then a proper Gran turismo 7 within 2-3 years. Exciting times ahead and Switch with New Mario I'm one happy gamer. Can't wait for South Park as well.

BlackTar1872459d ago

6 yrs would be the length if the ps5 coms out in 2019

So it's safe to say most likely that 6yrs at the least and up to 7-8 yrs

PS2 is a legend, so should PS4.

yeahright22460d ago

Yeah no kidding, when a console that old gets a game that's releasing on it's grandson, you know it's on a whole other level. (seriously, fifa 14 released on PS2.)

FITSniper2460d ago

Wow I did not know that.

Gamble202459d ago

Not to take anything away from the accomplishment, as it is very impressive still, but the reason why FIFA 14 released on PS2 is largely because of under developed countries where they can only afford really old systems like the PS2. Even so it is pretty incredible.

PhoenixUp2459d ago

@ yeah

Same thing happened for Wii. Just Dance 17 arrived on it and its grandchild Switch

yeahright22459d ago

Didn't know that one. Amazing the legs some of these consoles have.

DevilOgreFish2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

@ the title

If they want to be more like a PC sure, but in the end it would only cripple the amount of games released on the console. PCs by comparison don't have games attached to hardware so shorter lifespans don't really matter. A good lifespan for consoles is 6 years, for PCs it doesn't really make a difference other than for new features and performance boosts.

Tech52460d ago

agreed. shorter lifespans for consoles is bad for game development studios. most games these days need at least 2-3 years for development. for PC that's nothing but for a console that's like half of it's lifespan. consoles should be out a while longer in order to receive the game.

DevilOgreFish2460d ago

@^^ " consoles should be out a while longer in order to receive the game."

That's actually the main issue with SqaureEnix. the FFVII remake has been in development for so long now. of course in the end no one wants a rushed game. so in the end the consoles should out a while longer, or their games get pushed over to the next console generation.

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil4d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19924d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop3d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom3d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor3d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog3d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit3d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

So they eventually don't pay their workers and depend on our tips to pay them like the case with waiters!

Deeeeznuuuts4d ago

That kind of practice is only normal in the states, as far as I know anyway, what a backwards system

H94d ago

No it's as well in a every country that wants to amercanize

bloop4d ago

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum3d ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

Jin_Sakai4d ago

Is this a joke? How about the big wigs giving up some of their pay for their hard working developers.

MrBaskerville4d ago

Maybe the CEO could earn his money based on tips.

mastershredder4d ago

good god. The devs are not baristas dude. Total 1% ideals. Fing Chadosaurus.

The Reason Sega Lost The 32-Bit War? The 32X, Says Yosuke Okunari

"The company was unable to focus enough on its main hope"

timeextension.com
ApocalypseShadow8d ago

Nope. Going back to the 32X as the reason Sega lost that generation doesn't go back far enough before the Saturn.

Sega executives need to blame themselves as to why Sega lost that generation. Not Saturn. Not 32X. Not Sega CD. Nope. Executives were the reason why. It wasn't the hardware. Those devices were either dropped early or released to soon resulting in a developer backlash the hurt the game catalog. They really shouldn't have been made at all because they should have planned their next move more carefully. It has nothing to do with the devices. Poor leadership decisions and lack of unity within the company are what happened.

Love how blame is always shifted away from what is the truth. Writing a book placing the blame on the 32X isn't the truth.

solideagle8d ago

I am pretty sure there are documentaries (Youtube) around it which highlights these points. I had Sega Mega drive and NES growing up but that's about it. I didn't even know there was a war going on between these companies but I do remember thinking why I can't play Sonic cartridge on Nintendo or Mario on Sega :D

FinalFantasyFanatic8d ago

I had the Genesis and the Saturn, also had the SNES and 64, I never got a Dreamcast for some reason, but I never saw one in the stores either.
