Opinion: Why don’t we finish games?

If there’s one thing I have a habit of doing, it’s not finishing my games before moving onto the next. It’s something that I’ve never really thought of before, but I recently cast my thoughts to my pile of shame. Being honest, we all have one, some larger than others, but we’re all guilty of leaving one or more games unfinished.

porkChop2495d ago

The issues I've had are open world fatigue and some games just not doing much to keep my attention in the final 1/3 of the game. Later stages often seem like thrown-together afterthoughts, and open worlds are sometimes just so boring and lifeless. The industry needs to do better as a whole.

AnubisG2494d ago

Not only that but new games are released every week. It happens a lot that I play a game and a new one comes out I've been waiting for so I start playing that instead of finishing the other one.

Sniperwithacause2494d ago

Thats my problem also.
That plus when I buy multiple games at one time.

Sono4212494d ago

No I think the problem is all major games always release within a week of each other. It's very annoying actually. 365 days a year and the biggest games always release close to each other. Spread it out ffs.

Aenea2494d ago

The "ohh! shiny!" syndrome... I know it well!

thekhurg2494d ago

"Open world fatigue" - just a stupid argument. If you're tired of open world games, then stop buying them? It's not fatigue that makes you play them all.

Dirtnapstor2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

Hate to complain about having too much of a good thing, but that's just it...I cannot complete one before another is released. I get back-logged, then my MP games get jealous, so I need to play those for a bit. Then the SP campaigns start pining again. I get pulled in too many directions to complete anything LOL! Add the PS Plus freebies, it's over!

DaGR8JIBRALTAR2494d ago

This is my issue exactly. ..

CorndogBurglar2493d ago

@ TheKhurg

You missed the point.....

Its not that we are tired of open world games. Its that there is too much to them and I get tired of the game before coming anywhere close to seeing everything it has to offer.

thekhurg2493d ago

@corn

Game is too big so you can't complete it? Sounds like you don't like open world games - so my original point still stands. Don't play them...

There's a market for huge open world games, and it's irritating watching people that clearly don't enjoy them complain about them wanting them to change. There's a ton of games out there that aren't open world (fewer open world games than others actually). So enjoy those instead.

fr0sty2493d ago

I finally finished Doom, after starting it on Ultra Violence difficulty and only being able to progress in slow amounts here and there, and only having time to game every few weeks. Took me 6 months.

Kosic2493d ago

I've tried my best not to buy day one. Either I won't complete it quick enough and get bored. Or I buy it play it through then the game drops in price rapidly thay i couldve saved by waiting a few weeks.

I agree. Open world games have never been able to hold my attention to the end. The only exception has been BOTW. Most people complain about shorter games but I prefer them because it usually means I will see the resolution.

FinalFantasyFanatic2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

I find that I need more direction in my games, I generally don't get that with open world games and just end up dicking about in them and never finishing them till I get bored of them.

It's definitely a focus issue for me (I need a strong story to point me "in that general direction"), plus I don't have as much free time as I had when I was a teenager (having more disposable income only fuels my problem).

RommyReigns2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

My current wall of unfinished games, mainly because of other games releasing/keeping my attention (and I mostly prefer story mode games) -

- Battlefield 1
- Completing the unlockables and collectables to improve my trophy % on the Last of Us Remastered (planning to complete eventually after backlog)
- Day of the Tentacle Remastered (tried to get the platinum trophy, but hated hearing the name 'Hoagie' after an hour of playing)
- Street Fighter 5
- GTA V
- NBA 2k16
- Mortal Kombat X
- Battlefield 4

Godmars2902494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

How do you not finish a fighting game? Don't play through all character story modes?

Also, does getting all trophies and awards, things first introduced specifically to artificially or externally extend a game's life, really count towards finishing a game?

RommyReigns2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

@Godmars

Mainly playing through the story modes and getting the most out of fighting games, I nowadays rarely get to invest much time to play fighting games to enjoy the full depth of mechanics, gameplay additions and improvements, compared to when I was young playing games like Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Super Smash Bros 64 and Melee almost religiously.

Also on trophies counting towards 'finishing' a game, it's more like getting more out of a game and something to aim for. Using my example of the Last of Us which I completed and loved it, but specified the collectables mainly to as one thing to aim to come back for (as in my playthrough I was enjoying and discovering as much as I could along with that awesome story, that I ended up getting most of the collectables in the game and have some left over to get in future using a trophy guide).

stanr2494d ago

I agree, so many open-world games are repetitive or just empty and I lost my interest after the third act of the game.

CorndogBurglar2493d ago

Yep. This is pretty much why I'm not thw biggest fan of open world games. I always save the story missions for last because I know once I finish the story I'll have little reason to keep playing pointless side missions.

So I usually try doing side stuff first, and then lose interest in the game long before i get anywhere close to finishing the story.

Give me a decent length linear game over open world any day.

Fazraza2493d ago

Open world games these days just aren't that appealing to me anymore, I used to love them when I was a teenager, but now I'm almost 26 and I've just lost interest in the big huge time consuming open worlds of today, even GTAV bored me after a few hours and I never expected that, the best kind of game for me is a game that is mostly linear but allows backtracking throughout a more open hub-like world, like bioshock, the souls games and the original silent hill and resident evil games.

Angeljuice2493d ago

I am prone to OCD behaviour and tend to finish all my games.

Nyxus2494d ago

Personally I finish almost every game (if it's story based at least).

Phill-Spencer2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

Same. If i like a game i will play through. Ofcourse if a game turns out to be crap i won't force myself to play until i see the credits

Edito2494d ago

Spot on, the worst open world experience i ever had was with MGS V The Phantom Pain, i'm a huge fan of Metal Gear Solid, played every single one but man Phantom Pain feels so empty and dry for me i still couldn't finish the game...

aftershock2494d ago

Dude, totally agree. I too am a metal gear fan and TPP was just lifeless and boring. Going open world was a giant mistake. I've tried to finish it several times but I still can't do it

Chaos_Order2494d ago

Feel the same way about MGSV. I absolutely love Metal Gear, have done since MGS on PS1, but I found MGSV to be boring and uninteresting. It did nothing to take advantage of being open world, crap story, and mostly dull missions. I put 30 hours into it, desperately hoping for the experience to get better, clinging to memories of Metal Gear greatness, before I quit out of sheer boredom. By far the biggest gaming disappointment of my entire life, even over the likes of Deus Ex: Invisible War.

Stogz2493d ago

Played Ground Zeroes and was not impressed. Glad I skipped the main game.

SamPao2493d ago

sry to hear, I played the shit out of Phantom pain, for me it was the metal gear I played the most. Becaue it has the best gameplay of them all.

affrogamer2493d ago

Platinumed MGS V and I loved every second of it. It's my 2nd fav this gen so far after Horizon.

mafiahajeri2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

Empty and dry? The music alone sets the tone perfectly. It sucks for you that that's what you felt because it is an epic game is.

The narrative alone and it being the end of the series should have at least gave you the motivation to finish it if you are truly a fan of the series. Let alone how much fun the game is.

It's called a sandbox for a reason you make your own adventures, you play the game how you want to, I feel like people don't even take full advantage of that in the sense that they do not try everything they have available to them in the game, and play it a certain way that they will definitely feel the way you feel.

I mean the game gives you everything for the genre, if you want you can be a tactical genius and really be stealthy or you can go in guns blazing in most missions and still be satisfied. What I'm trying to say is that it gives you everything you could want from the genre/series.

Maybe its your attitude towards games that has changed since last playing an MGS game, it definitely isn't dry or tasteless. Criticize the game mechanics but dry and tasteless is like saying one of the best steaks in the world is dry and tasteless... Your gaming taste buds must be off...

Soc52493d ago

Me too, I played a couple of hours and then Installed Witcher 3 which was on sale, and never looked back, since it was a rental I just returned it

Psychotica2494d ago

For me it's like watching a tv show with my finger on the remote control button ready to turn the channel at the slightest hint of boredom.

Yui_Suzumiya2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

I do unless it's too difficult or stupid. The GTA games were too stupid and boring to warrant more than a few hours and Killzone: Shadow Fall was too hard. Funny since I completed the others relatively easily.

SamPao2493d ago

shadow fall had no focus points in the campaign even though its pretty tunnely it just laked the focus. but I still finished it. KZ2 is still my favorite

Yui_Suzumiya2492d ago

The part I gave up on was when you have to protect that woman from the Helghast. I tried for hours and repeatedly got butchered while she was doing something. I was loving the story so I really hated giving up. Especially since I played the original trilogy multiple times and had no issues besides a few choke points in Killzone 2. The third will always be my favorite. Loved the story, environment, set pieces, weapons.. everything. I'd love the trilogy on PS4.

GrimDragon2494d ago

Most games today just aren't interesting enough to finish.

xPaYDaYx2494d ago

Now that's just silly, you can say that about movies and music all you want but we know you're full of shit when talking about games like that.

GrimDragon2494d ago

Lolz....ok..ok..maybe just a little geez:)
