Insomniac on Spider-Man: 1080P@60 Not Really an Option on PS4 Pro, FP View Used at Certain Moments

Insomniac revealed that 1080P@60fps won't really be feasible for Spider-Man on PS4 Pro. They also said that first person view is in the game, though reserved for specific moments.

Man, I'd be fine with 720/900p if it meant a solid 55-60fps

Genuine-User2495d ago

Even then it wouldn't be an option. Current-gen console CPU's can only do so much.

Alexious2495d ago

Both Sony and Microsoft cheaped out with those Jaguar processors.

thekhurg2495d ago

On top of that, I'd pass on sub 1080p resolutions on a 4k display.

Skull5212495d ago

Dang with the XBOX doing Forza 7 4K60 the PS4 Pro must be severely under powered to not pull off 1080p60.

super_bruno2495d ago

There is no reason to buy a Pro

bluefox7552495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

Those Jag cores mean 30fps for the majority of games on all consoles. I don't see that changing next gen either, frame rate is far less marketable than resolution.
@skull521 There are games on Pro that also run 4k/60, surely you see how dumb it makes you look comparing 2 vastly different games?

r2oB2495d ago

@ skull521

What resolution is the XBOX running Spider-Man? Oh wait...

On a more serious note, Forza is a closed circuit racer which is why the XBOX can run fit at 4K60. This is evident by the other AAA games shown running 4K checkerboard at 30 frames. Seems the XBOX is just as underpowered as the PS4 Pro by your standards.

bouzebbal2495d ago

4K 30fps it is !
It's great for this kind of games..
Just look at ratchet or infamous.

DragonKnight2494d ago

@Skull: Yeah, there's no reason to be impressed by a pretty racing game. Racing games are showpieces because there's not much to them. I think it's sad that you only have Forza to look forward to every year.

nX2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

I think 30fps are fine in most games, remember when people said you can't play racing games in 30fps? Since then Driveclub and Forza Horizon managed it perfectly and with a 4k TV, I'll certainly prefer the better graphics.

It's just that having the option for 60fps wouldn't be bad in some cases.

OB1Biker2495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

I think the article maybe misleading.
Someone asked if that would be an option and Insomniac replied they will optimise for the best experience. No option
In other words they are not saying they can't for some reason people blame the CPU for. They are just saying they won't. Maybe they want the game 30fps

Kiwi662495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

If its not the CPU then what other reason could there be as i'm sure Insomniac know more about what they can do on the hardware that they have to work with far more than internet experts do

OB1Biker2495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

@Kiwi
Probably the same reason they made R&C 30fps.
I'm no expert but I know there's always a choice/compromise to be made.

OB1Biker2495d ago

The news here is they will optimise for the experience they think the best and don't give the option for gamers to chose a different compromise.

HeyNowChillax2495d ago

No-one wants the game to run at 30fps. Gamer or developer.

DragonKnight2494d ago

Wasn't it Insomniac that said that all of their games would be 30FPS?

*checks the internet*

Yep.

http://www.insomniacgames.c...

So it's not at 60fps because Insomniac is following through with their promise to not have a 60fps game again after the previous R&C game.

donthate2494d ago

kiwi66:

The PS4 Pro is heavily bottlenecked all over the place, not just the CPU. The machine was built to fit a price of $399, and even dropped UHD blu-ray drive.

If it wasn't so bottlenecked, other areas of the system could pick up the slack and give the CPU more time. That just isn't the case with PS4 Pro. It was always intended to be a modest upgrade over PS4 Slim, and use checkerboard rendering to fill the gap.

Liqu1d2494d ago

Insomniac don't bother with 60fps anymore.

http://www.insomniacgames.c...

nicsaysdie2494d ago

@kiwi66
Um, maybe they feel like 30 FPS makes for a more cinematic experience. Maybe, just maybe, it's the way they want to make their game. Just a thought.

andrewsquall2495d ago

Then just get a TV that makes the game a bit smoother although it won't fix it looking like a jaggie mess at 720p unless you love gaming on a 28" screen on your PS4 in 2018.

PiperMCFierceson2495d ago

I game on a 28" asus monitor ... that's hooked up to my ps4pro. I don't have time for all that tv delay.

edeprez2495d ago

Tv's that interpolate frames introduce a lot of lag, i keep mine in game mode, or else it's a laggy mess. Lcd tv's are typically slower than plasma or crt to begin with, but it might be bearable in a single player game.

Erik73572495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

Well you see it's not actually running it at 4k which is why it can't do that. It's 1080p upscaled

They just love to call it 4k

MegamanXXX2495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

I actually agree with you and I also think it will happen to the XOX because of the weak laptop cpu in both consoles. True Native 4K 60fps is only in PC

medman2495d ago

+Alexious
Well, to be fair, if they didn't "cheap out" on the cpu, most gamers would be complaining about how much the systems cost, and they wouldn't have a chance to sell units to many gamers. They compromised to make a profit....hard to blame them for that. If the xbox one x decided to go the ryzen route for the cpu, imagine what that system would cost....people are already moaning and wailing it's overpriced at 499.

UltraNova2495d ago

Correct but then they decided to keep hyping people like the xb1x was a 700 dollar machine with true 4K, uncompressed pixesl and higher framerates....when they knew all they got was checkeredbaord 4K and 30 fps on 1st party games...

medman2494d ago

+ultranova
I don't disagree with you at all, but once the final specs for Scorpio were revealed, the writing was on the wall. This "true 4k" nonsense Microsoft keeps yammering on about is rubbish, it's just a shame many gamers cannot, or will not, see it for what it is.

Microsoft has a willingness to deceive their customers that is becoming legendary....from Milo, Kinect, clouds and "the power of multiple xbox one's in the cloud", dx12 improvements to console gaming, Titanfall could only be made with the cloud, drivatars, etc. etc. etc....they just can't seem to just speak plainly. They embellish everything to such a ridiculous degree, it gets tiresome. Some people fall for it and continue to believe. For these people, I guess they keep hoping that one of these times Microsoft will actually be telling the truth to them. They shouldn't hold their breath.

frame rate is relative to the game. Personally I have no issue with 30 FPS. yes some games are great largely in part due to running in 60 FPS but so are plenty of games running 30 FPS. Some games it's imperative they run in 60 FPS while others, well, it doesn't matter because 30 FPS is absolutely great. Personally I can care less as long as the game looks great, runs smooth, plays fine and isn't riddled with bugs. Granted if the FPS dip too low we have an issue but 30, 60 really don't care I just want great experiences and games and both work great in their own right.

XStation4pio_Pro2495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

oof - 720p on a 4k tv would be brutal considering even 1080p is only half rez.

Father__Merrin2495d ago

those who say they cheaped out on cpu choice what cpu should they have popped in then? they have to manufacture a mass market product and not just for a few. if the ps4 and x1 launched at £600 each sure they could have had better cpu in there but who will buy it?

gamer78042494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

this isn't some twitch competitive game, the only time 60fps is nice if you are doing some sorta pvp, otherwise i'd much rather have a cinematic 30fps and 4k or better graphics.

if you really must have 60fps on all games you might as well sell your consoles and spend 2-3x as much on a PC that you need to keep upgrading every year.

madforaday2494d ago

When it comes to SP games I really don't NEED 60 FPS but of course I would pick that over any resolution. Uncharted 4 felt super smooth for being 30fps in SP. I do trust the developer in this case so we will see.

XiNatsuDragnel2495d ago

I don't care at this point 1800p at 60fps would be great.

Death2495d ago

1080p@60 really should be the minimum on the Pro and Scorpio. I think 4K@30 and HDR should be the realistic target with or without upscaling techniques. I don't care if it's native 4K as long as the frame rate is acceptable. 4K@60 is great, but not something to be expected. Forza is doing it which is to be expected because it's a racing game. I expect GT to hit similar numbers as well.

DrJones2495d ago

1080p 60 fps minimum on $400 hardware,.. lol. PC's at twice that price can't assure that performance on ultra settings in all games.

TheGamez1002495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

Imagine if the game did run 1080/4k at 60fps, My lord.... Its an exclusive so higher framerates dont really matter as long as its stable. Would people still be impressed by the game if it was 60fps but worse graphics? Prob not with how most ppl like to judge by graphics these days.

Sam Fisher2495d ago

Thank cod4 for that, but seriously gta does extremely well, and the graphics at best is claymation

joedahoe2495d ago

"Gta graphics is at best claymation?"

W-What?!?! You fuckin blind?!

phoenixwing2495d ago

@TheGamez

actually your point resonates with insomniac alot. they did market research and found most people didn't care about the 60fps and instead liked the prettier graphics. From that point on Ratchet and Clank was made to be 30fps and I'm not surprised it's carrying over to their other games.

Nathan_Hale532494d ago

Funny thing is, many R&C fans complained about the framerate.

Ju2495d ago

Butter smooth 30fps is quite alright (for these kind of games). If the frame pacing is rock solid and it never dips below, and the input latency is kept at a minimum, 30fps play just as great.

Animosity2494d ago

"Butter smooth 30fps" Lol

Ju2494d ago

Play RB6 at 85 fps unlocked or HZD @ 30 and tell me again which one is smoother

KwietStorm_BLM2495d ago

I'm so tired of the pixel counting myself. I'm glad I have a gaming PC, but console land is still treated like red headed step children with all these corners still getting cut in 2017, and so many consolers are complacent with the whole thing, that it's not going to change. Higher frame rates over higher res any day of the week.

CBaoth2494d ago

it's all give and take. PC only gamers get shafted as well. PC gaming in 2017 sucks to the late 80's and 90's for me. Hell everything after Crysis has kinda sucked. Modern PC gaming in a nutshell: spend $500 on a GPU to brute strength console sloppy seconds. Aside from the Civ series are there any triple AAA PC exclusives left? Blizzard makes games for consoles. CDR got a taste of that console revenue now. Valve doesn't even try anymore. Most of the innovation comes from indies as you know. But when it's more akin to Wii shovelware than Minecraft, sifting through thousands of them really only reinforces this point. Plus, with the rise of digital, buying games on the cheap isn't restricted to steam sales anymore. I haven't even discussed other issues like Early Access, Steam Greenlight/Direct, Kickstarter, subsidizing & homogenizing Mods, etc... and their negative impact on the platform. Ironic it seems on certain issues the red-headed stepchild label can be applied to it as well. There are pros and cons to everything.

In 38 years of gaming, I've come to the realization that console gaming is, has, and will always be about compromises. PC gaming had a lot fewer of them. Recently, though, it's not so black and white.

Nathan_Hale532494d ago

What sucks is, you're right. People give too much shits for visuals over a good framerate. I definitely prefer frames over visuals.

well whatever they used for the e3 reveal was perfect for me.

Razzer2495d ago

I agree. The game looks incredible.

BeenThereDoneThat2495d ago

Totally agree with you! It looked fantastic no matter what the system used at e3. I'm looking sooo forward to playing it.

Tussin1872495d ago

Yes, this obsession with 4k and 60fps is getting ridiculous. Played and Platinum Horizon. Not once did I worry if the game was Native 4k or 60fps.

You know what I did? Enjoyed the f@cking game!!!! The game was/is absolutely a masterpiece in my eyes. And that goes with all the 30fps games I have played and enjoyed since I been a gamer. Since Intellivison to be exact. Remember those days?

Now we have a bunch of spoiled and entitled gamers. We should be talking about all the great games that are coming out but all people can do is bitch about framerate and whether a game is native 4k or not.

I watched this demo from the conference and it was amazing!! I didn't think about framerate or resolution. All I thought about was how f@cking good this game looked!!!

I'm done with this comment section because some of you are toxic to this industry and I can no longer read this bullshit!!! So have fun with all your bickering over f@cking pixels on a screen.

Four years of games below 1080p and now all you guys can talk about is whether a game is native 4k or not. Now all of a sudden resolution matters again when your side has the advantage. And the same can be said of the opposite. It's pathetic and does a disservice to all the hard work these developers put into these games to please you cold-hearted and nitpicking so called gamers.

Yes, I get you want certain things to happen but you ask for too much sometimes. Come back down to freaking reality. Making games is not easy and will never be and you guys are on here act like get to 4k or 60fps is some easy task. It's not. And if it's so easy then show us all how it's done.

So have fun especially the lowest of them all which are the closet fanboys. You guys take the cake and actually get pleasure with these fanboy wars. It sad and I can't believe you call yourselves gamers.

I'm done, have fun, and continue to fight over pixels even though the majority of you don't even own a f@cking 4k TV!! I will get back to enjoying all the amazing games coming out at whatever resolution or framerate.

To all the people who just enjoy games, I just want to say thank you and I hope you continue to enjoy games as I do. I know a lot of you have jobs, families, and other hobbies. Hats off to you all and HAPPY GAMING!!!! I'm out.......

asmith23062495d ago

"Now we have a bunch of spoiled and entitled gamers" - I call them pathetic fanboys. I have a PS4 and always play BF1 on it but I had the "privilege" of playing the game on a friends new PC on ultra. It was nice at first but the novelty wore off quick. It didn't make the slightest bit of difference to me and when I got back to the PS4 version I was ultimately more comfortable as that's what I'm used to. Lower framerates and graphics take nothing away from the enjoyment of a game as long as they don't break the game.

HeyNowChillax2495d ago

"Since Intellivison to be exact. Remember those days?" My cousins owned one and I was a little guy playing it all day every time we went over. Never forget those days in gaming, that and ZORK. 4K is just a marketing mistake that led an industry and we're simply not there yet for $500. There's something to be said talking numbers, but 4K 60FPS will be limited on current hardware. Wipeout PS4 Pro and Forza X1X @ E3 are good examples, both racing games of course. I think this new mid-cycle gen should have focused on 2160p or even 1440p considering the current market share of 4K owners. 60fps is really the goal depsite the BS, but yes Horizon was pretty amazing and the TV itself can smooth out a few of the issues as well.

Stapleface2494d ago (Edited 2494d ago )

I enjoy the hell out of my games, regardless of framerate. I could really care less about 4k.. But you folks should really stop pretending 60+fps is not a noticeable improvement over 30fps and stop pretending that something like Horizon wouldn't have just been even more amazing than it already is at 30fps. Yes it's a great game, the frame rate didn't bother me playing through it either. But it would have been even better than it already is at 30fps. Your just lying to yourself and everyone else saying otherwise.

Nathan_Hale532494d ago

My issue is with how fast Spiderman is, it's gonna look choppy without more frames man. The people complaining don't hate games cause of a bad framerate, but they just much prefer a better framerate to visuals and anymore, people freak out over visuals too much. People asking/wanting things/features in a video game aren't toxic, they are consumers that just want some variety in the product they're buying and they simply want the best experience that developers can offer.

Razzer2494d ago

Playing games at 30 fps doesn't make them "choppy". Just not as smooth. It is hardly a big deal.
