After more than four years, Feminist Frequency’s Tropes vs. Women in Video Games series has come to a close. Host Anita Sarkeesian sends the show out with little fanfare, focusing the final installment on the sorry state of “lady sidekicks” in games.

Truthfully, Tropes vs Women hasn't been her main source of income, or even biggest claim to fame. It was just the springboard which allowed her to exploit others....and funny enough, she wasn't even the mastermind behind it. Go look up what feminist frequency is, and who were it's principal founders, and you will see this whole controversy was completely manufactured to happen like this from the very beginning, and part of the gaming press was part of it....hence Gamergate(which involved more than this). It's pretty sad all that got swept under the rug, just so a few people could become rich and popular.

Movie reviewers like SISKEL and EBERT and others movie reviewers have been the word 'trope' for a very long time.

People may not have known the terminology, but gamers have complained about all sorts of tropes long before Anita used the word for a title. I'm sure in every day discussion, many did the same things, in reference to TV shows, movies, and even music.

But, I will say that movie reviews, whether professional or otherwise, I've seen the word used often. I typically used the word cliches, which is actually more apt for most of her examples.

You see, a trope isn't a bad thing. They exist everywhere. Anything that is recognizable within a story is considered a trope. Everything is a trope at this point(The simpsons already did it syndrome). It's just the way it is. It's the overuse, and thus annoyance of said trope(for whatever reason it is annoying or frowned upon) that is a cliche. Ultimately, it's when the trope is predictable, that it's cliche, but even that predictability is in itself a trope in many cases. The princess captured in the console for the hero to rescue is a trope. If it resolves itself in a boring and uninteresting way, then it's a cliche. but if it resolves itself in say the way Bioshock infinite did it, then it's no longer cliche....it's just a trope presented with a cool twist.

The above is why her whole web series was flawed. It attacked the tropes, not the cliches....or at least misappropriated her ire. Any connection to something negative about women was bad.....and all context was ignored in how it was resolved, or all the other aspects of what surrounded why those tropes existed in the first place.

To be more on topic.....the female sidekick. While technically a story trope(although that'd be sidekick in general, not just female), I find it hard to believe she could come up with enough content to actually make this video. The female side kick is quite rare in gaming. Last gen, we can probably count on one hand games that had female side kicks, and of the three I can think of off the top of my head(TLOU, UC, Bioshock Infinite, Coratanna...by a stretch) the female sidekick is considered to be a pretty strong character that at times, surpasses the main character in terms of plot relevance or character development.

I just don't know how low we have to go before developers and the industry as whole finally says enough is enough. I think when developers are no longer able to create a game they want will you see push back. Her lack of being able to swim is believable within the story line, and stems more from the developer wanting to have some sort of basic puzzle to add in to keep parts of the game interesting. Not exactly harmful to women to assume that a 14yo girl couldn't take summer swim lessons at the Y 20 years after the apocalypse.
