Okay Microsoft, We've Seen Shimmering 4K, Where's VR?

We knew for a fact that both gaming console giants have some amazing consoles upcoming that are aiming to provide the 4K gaming experience to the masses. Both had VR on their list. But where's VR MS?

Microsoft is not all in on VR. At least not yet.
I doubt we'll see any VR content from Microsoft.
We will see some VR games that are coming to Scorpio and Windows MR headsets.
But nothing from Microsoft themselves. They are leaving it up to third-parties until VR actually catches on.
I think it's the right choice because. I noticed a lot of hype for VR has died down.
And the fact that I haven't seen any Full AAA games yet except for Resident evil 7.
Until EA, Activision and Ubisoft are all in. VR will never catch on.

Dirt Rally is pretty amazing, I can actually be decent at a sim racer because of it. I'm also enjoying Eve. I'm playing my PSVR everyday just about.

Yep i agree. For it to be the next big thing it needed psvr to be pushed like ms did kinect but it did not get it. Great tech but for me it's not a must buy. I don't think they will use vr as a selling point. It has the power and what is coming out about 4k and 1080 sounds great just need the ip's now

Its not a gimmick. Problem is, how many devs will use it to its full potential. i still love 3d and it worked great if you had the right tech, but when no one is making games for it then no matter how well it works it will die out.

Hmm no! This year Zelda, Horizon, Nier, Ni-oh, Persona 5... is what people have been talking about and now the scorpio is getting all the attention. The only VR highlight this year was RE7.

I've said it along, VR, like 3d just isn't going to hold. I will say VR has endless potential though. And not just from a gaming perspective. Imagine being able to watch a sports game from a seat in the arena.... Like decades past perhaps in another 15-20 years we'll see it reintroduced and finally have the tech and support but right now, it's a niche market that just isn't going to take off; unfortunately.

Yep. Other than Battlefront's X-wing VR mission there's nothing worth playing on PSVR. It's Sony's own Kinect, and I regret buying one. Hopefully MS is done with the gimmicks.

VR is not for me, but options are never a bad thing when it comes to gaming. Perhaps make Scorpio compatible with PC VR headsets?
I don't think it's worth investing in their own VR hardware at this point. Seems like it's fizzling out.

There are 3 majors (Sony, FB, HTC/STEAM) in the VR space now... no need to wait for MS how about they continue to push the envelope in that space...

Lets just be real here. Microsoft is one of the top software companies in the world period. Windows holographic is already renowned API in the AR/VR space.

People may hate Microsoft with all they heart and soul... but the technology and gaming space needs Microsoft from a software perspective and a financial one as well.

You seem to have microsoft confused with a company that is more serious when it comes to gaming. Microsoft is out for profits period. Using their huge cash reserves as a point to why they're important is a horrible analogy because they simply will not spend the cash needed to do as you claim. If it's profitable and suits them, sure they spend the cash but otherwise they will not try to push boundaries or the envelope as you put it. Which means if any company is going to be doing the envelope pushing it will be Sony or Nintendo simply because their revenue stream is geared toward gaming.

I know every company is out to make money my point is that Sony relies heavily on video games for revenue and is more apt to invest for bigger rewards than microsoft who doesn't make much off of the xbox division compared to their bread and butter windows operating system

Microsoft has already developed and deployed Windows Holographic to any content creator gaming or otherwise...

Microsoft' has written and deployed new api's for gaming written right into W10 for pc and xbox.

If Microsoft wouldnof never got in the gaming space, Gaming could possibly still be in a primitive state. How we save games etc...

Lets not turn a blind eye to this... A mega billion software/tech company is very much needed in this space...

When you turn on ur console or phone and go through its respective app store, u can thank Microsoft who was a pioneer in that space

I think the best thing they can do is to open Xbox Scorpio for Rift, Vive and some others.

Facebook, HTC, etc. will be happy to widen the audience they can sell their hardware to.

No need for R&D and get the best VR headsets in the world on your console.

We've already seen Microsoft's VR plans http://www.theverge.com/201...

They are partnering with HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer but they don't appear to be making a 1st party headset (I assume, they might well announce one but honestly what would be the point?). I would guess their going to develop a Windows 10 VR Api which will work with all of these headsets and Xbox One, S and Scorpio because they all use Windows 10 Kernels (Much like how they've use the DX12 Api across the board). Long story short their not investing quite so heavily on in-house RnD in case the VR Hype dies down like 3d TV.

VR is easier to execute than 4K, especially on a console. I imagine they'll announce developer supported VR for Oculus and maybe Vive, but wont be MS' E3 priority. They want to regain the American hardcore gamer crowd. VR would be a distraction. I suspect VR will become "sim racing" focused, the only application that truly benefits from it and the demographic willing to spend the $ on gaming setups.

Haven't heard too much about VR after PSVR was launched... MS already stated Xbox Scorpio would support VR headsets... But, I don't think VR will really push very many sales in the console business... Not right now anyway...

Not like it'd matter. When people spend $300+ on a device they will be compelled to defend their purchase and have a biased view. That's why there's some debate as to whether reviewers are more objective if they bought the game themselves​ or if they got it for free.

I have Oculus and recently sold my PSVR. VR is great, for a short period of time but it gets old quickly. This is due to 90% of games simply being "experiences". The PSVR, which my hat is off to Sony for getting it to work period, has tracking issues and resolution is terrible. I enjoyed DCVR and RE7, but honestly I enjoy both of them even more on my 4k tv with my Pro. Its cumbersome, cables everywhere and over priced for what it is. Thats my opinion at least.

Don't own one, don't need to. Its a Niche device. Will have specialty uses but never be mainstream until you loose the bulky headsets.

I and many others had seen VR for what it is/was currently. A fad. The hype will slowly disappear and the industry will focus on making 4K affordable to everyone. Once 4K saturation is well established then Someone may try VR again. How many times has 3D come and gone?

All these gimmicks that mess with your eyes and trick your brain just won't stay until the side effects are non existent in the masses. How many people say " Ah 4K made my head hurt and I got sick, I'm going back to 1080" No one...

As much as i like the concept of VR the practice is that people get sick (motion sickness, I probably would get sick too) and it detracts from regular means of outputting media that i actually use. Until they work out the problems VR will remain in the gimmick category sadly.

VR is a gimmick and I for one couldn't careless if MS skips it. I actually hope they do because MS needs to put every resource they have into new IP not VR crap tech demos being passed off as games. PSVR is basically already dead. Besides RE7 I dont see any full blown AAA games that makes use of VR. MS can miss VR as far as I'm concerned.

I still think VR has ways to go before the masses flock to it.

For me it has to feel more natural. Right now in small doses it's ok but we are far away from long sessions of VR without some side effects.

I know it's impossible but it has to be cheap as well I mean under $200 cheap befor the masses are going to buy it.
