Mass Effect: Andromeda Review - Giantbomb

Andromeda largely feels like a shoddily assembled facsimile of the previous Mass Effect games.

How is this review not in the least bit accurate ?

Are you telling me that you haven't experienced a single thing this reviewer has gone through with this game ? Not a single bug here and there, no weird facial animations ? If you say you haven't experienced some of these problems with this game then you're lying. These things aren't just experienced by the odd few, everybody is having at the very least some issues with the game.

joab7772573d ago

Of course there are a few human characters that are weird looking. You will see them in the first few hrs. But after that its about gameplay and the journey across Andromeda.

Is it polished? No. It could be better, but I think many reviews ignore everything else.

Jon_Targaryen2573d ago (Edited 2573d ago )

@Segagamer, I've experienced lots of bugs on Witcher 3 too when it first released... MANY!!! Even ME2 and 3 on released game me gaming crashing problems due to optimization problems. Did it make those games crap? NO!!!

So acting like this is the first game ever to release "broken" as you make it out to be is just ignorant and plain stupid. This game is really good. 90% of the VA is great and there were many times I had to stop and just let the scenery overwhelm me on certain planets. You sir, are a prime example of whats wrong with video games. Looking for fault where there really isnt any!

antz11042573d ago

@Jon tygarean but it's not a review of ME2, ME3, or Witcher 3. Saying the cons shouldn't count because other games got a pass is laughable.

InTheZoneAC2572d ago

@Jon

I bought Witcher 3 at launch and probably put only around 15 hours into it and the little that I played I experienced no bugs. That was before all the patches came out. But anytime I look at ME:A it just LOOKS broken then I see it in action is and PLAYS broken.

The audacity to release a game in this state especially with this budget should be fair enough to drop it 5 points automatically.

SegaGamer2572d ago

@Jon_Targaryen

"So acting like this is the first game ever to release "broken" as you make it out to be is just ignorant and plain stupid"

Where in my comment did i say that ? I was replying to somebody who said that this review wasn't in the least bit accurate, which is simply not true. There are many bugs and there are many weird facial animations, that cannot be denied. So the reviewer is actually at least a bit accurate in his review. I'm not saying the game is broken or implying that it is either, but there are many things wrong with the game. If anyone is stupid here, it is you for misinterpreting my post.

"You sir, are a prime example of whats wrong with video games. Looking for fault where there really isnt any!"

Which again is a complete lie. There are faults with the game, many of them, and not just random unnoticeable ones either. A lot of the faults with this game is thrown right in your face. There are tons of examples of this all over the Internet. A lot of people dislike the voice acting, story, gameplay, facial animations, glitches. So to say i am just looking for faults is complete rubbish. It's impossible not to notice it.

Who the hell actually visits a garbage site like Giantbomb?

starchild2573d ago

I honestly don't care what critics think about anything. They are just a microcosm of the gaming community as a whole. Too many goddamn idiots.

frostypants2573d ago

Well, you seem pretty angry about it. Perhaps you care more than you realize.

starchild2572d ago

Not really. I'm disappointed and frustrated by all the double standards, fanboyism and bandwagons in the gaming community. But I don't care what score critics slap on a game (or movie, book, etc.) It truly has no influence on my own opinion of those things.

The bandwagon phenomenon is very real and is a recognized behavior pattern in human psychology. It's easy to see when it's happening in the gaming community. Some games get a degree of hate that is completely beyond rational grounds and is not proportional to any objective faults it might have.

alstruck2573d ago

I sense sarcasm here lol..

Criti-Choco2573d ago

garbage sites like Giantbomb? You clearly dont know...

now if you said polygon or kotaku, then maybe you would flip that disagree count around

LoveSpuds2573d ago (Edited 2573d ago )

You are grossly misinformed pal, Giantbomb exist purely because they are honest with their reviews. The founder of the Site, Jeff Gerstman was fired from Gamespot because he refused to change his review when advertisers threatened Gamespot with pulling their advertising money if they didn't give a higher score.

He took Brad Shoemaker (the reviewer of this game) with him, just because you haven't heard of them it doesn't mean they are a small concern. They are widely regarded among development and industry professionals as being stand up guys who care about the industry. Their E3 coverage has every dev you care to mention fighting to appear on their show because they are cool guys despite, this is despite Giantbomb often being critical of their games.

Read the review, it's Brad's personal opinion, it is well reasoned and is further backed up by several videos of pretty major bugs that affected him. You are the one here who sounds like a blinkered fan boy who cannot accept other people's perspectives.

ShadowKnight2573d ago

Well I've played worse games than this. This game is definitely better than the Division and Quantum Break IMO

Trekster_Gamer2573d ago

QB far and away was better in every conceivable way.

R6ex2573d ago

+1

At least the QB characters don't creep me out. I just can't stand looking at those ME:A faces ... just takes me out of the game! Its 2017 afterall.

This ME fan here (who bought 5 copies of ME 1-3) ain't buying this ME:A piece of crap!

ShadowKnight2573d ago (Edited 2573d ago )

QB made me fall in a deep sleep. I enjoyed the sleep more than the game

Trekster_Gamer2573d ago

Shadow Night looking at your comment history it's fair to say your anti Xbox and anti Microsoft I'm fairly certain you've never played Quantum break you're just a typical fan boy troll who doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

ShadowKnight2572d ago

I actually played Quantum Break on my PC and streamed it on my twitch account. Since I cleared that up obviously you don't know what you're talking about.

This game has high high's and low low's, if that makes any sense. It's not a bad game but not even close to any of the three in the original trilogy.

Donjune2573d ago

Spot on! Summed it up perfectly!

Servbot412573d ago

Basically. Either you can look past the issues and get a really enjoyable game out of it, or you can't. I'm having a blast, personally, even though its buggy as hell, but I wouldn't fault someone for rating it low, assuming they've actually played it.

Trekster_Gamer2573d ago

The issues is what make the game bad. Turn a blind eye to all issues?

That's lame.

mechlord2573d ago

Big part of the reason these sites are giving it low score (and me too personally) is what this game represents, what it was hyped to be and the shoulders its standing on. If it was some rookie developer i think all these issues would just receive a passing mention. But, with the developer and publisher it has, it has absolutely no reason to be this shoddy. It doesn't mean it cant be fun and engaging, but really, at times it feels no one playtested this.

Jon_Targaryen2573d ago

Take your nostalgia goggles off. If you wanted a true Sheppard sequel you were going to be disappointed from the beginning regardless. You can blame Mac Walter and Casey Hudson for that.

Jmanzare2573d ago

@mech
So you're judging the game for what it isn't and not for what it is?

The launch games were all right, but look at how Virtua Fighter and Daytona USA compared to their re-releases.

Mass Effect Companions, Ranked from Worst to Best

From Xfire: "BioWare's Mass Effect franchise took gamers on a fascinating universal sci-fi journey that will never be forgotten. While fighting against the ever-looming threat of the Reapers was central to Mass Effect's storyline, what made the series so iconic was its vast and diverse cast of characters.

Not only do these companions accompany Commander Shepard as you make your way through hell and back, but, throughout your journey, you also get to learn who these characters were and are and what they think about what it is that you are doing. Some will even fall in love with you, and others will even become your enemy based on your decision."

sourOG1071d ago

When I looked at the list I thought they were saying Garrus was the worst lol. And tali being so far down the list was fighting words for me. But the numbered list is just the order they are shown so you are forgiven.

CYALTR1071d ago

I think they listed them from worst to best. Also keep in mind that this includes Andromeda characters that aren't part of the remastered trilogy. Interesting refresh on the characters though.

sourOG1071d ago

They did but I didn’t realize it until I started reading. That’s just the order they are shown.

Knightofelemia1071d ago (Edited 1071d ago )

I couldn't stand Miranda I could never like her as a character and I always skipped Jacob and James. I always liked Grunt, Jack, Legion, Tali, Garrus, Samara, Liara, Wrex, Edi, Zaeed, Kasumi I always use these characters. Using Martin Sheen as the Illusive Man just fits the character like using Keith David as Admiral Anderson was another good choice always feels like Goliath from Gargoyles is yelling at you which I like.

Rebel_Scum1070d ago

Kinda weird having a question mark at the end of that sentence?

Soy1070d ago

Garrus is best space bro.

Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2021

Zahi AR. from Link Cable Gaming writes “Welcome back Link Cable Gaming fans, with me in andromeda. Specifically, Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2021. With the recent announcement of Anthem shutting down its future plans, I wanted to look at another recent BioWare game. My switch to a PlayStation 5 destroyed my save file right while I was at the end. So, I decided to do a fresh start on the new console to see just how well (or not) it’s been since launch. How has the new generation of hardware treated the game that fell from grace? Should you play Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2021? Let’s find out.”

Such a good game! It got a 4K X1X upgrade and it looks fantastic! Also like the story! Was playing it again before Series X dropped. Going to download it for the Series X, as soon as I have more room on my HD. Playing too many other games right now.

Instant resume is AMAZING! I can Switch between 5 games in seconds. Like 10 to 15 at the most! No closing a game and opening another one! Thank you Microsoft!

giovonni1136d ago

It’s was decent to me. I didn’t feel the magic I felt when I played two or even three. I don’t know. It was repetitive, and the worlds felt bland.

jeromeface1136d ago

There's a reason it reviewed so poorly in the first place... these reasons among others.

anast1136d ago

I had a lot of fun with this game, but I haven't played 2 or 3 yet.

giovonni1136d ago

2 was wonderful, three was just as good as two the ending though 🤦🏾‍♂️

Wintersun6161136d ago

I finally gave it a go last autumn and was amazed by how bad a game can be. And believe me my expectations were low. After 10ish hours I just had to give up.

giovonni1136d ago

I powered through it, myself. It was just repetitive, and the Land Rover Exploration wasn’t interesting at all. The story also we mahhhhhhh.
