The Switch will be Nintendo's last console - and that's a good thing for gamers

Nintendo's future is games not consoles, argues Tom Parsons

LOL_WUT2655d ago

Agreed it's time for them to focus on software only. It's clear that they don't know what consumers want outside of Japan. ;)

Neonridr2655d ago

meh, I know I will get tons of use out of this thing. For me personally this appeals to me in many ways minus the pricing. I think everything is priced a little too high (handheld, accessories and games). Here's hoping that Nintendo makes some adjustments to help with sales down the road.

I still have my PS4 for any other core gaming I need to do.

Vegamyster2655d ago

The price of the accessories and all the bogus online are the only things I'm highly disappointed in, that said nearly every game they showed minus the motion control stuff has me interested and i love portable devices, Zelda, Mario, Xenoblade 2, Octopath Traveler, Bomberman, RMX, Fire Emblem Warriors from Team Ninja then later down the line the inevitable Monster Hunter & Pokemon games ect. it won't have great 3rd party support but given that the tablet is only a couple inches bigger than a 3DS XL it doesn't surprise me, i have my PC & PS4/Xone anyway. Hopefully they can have a steady stream of games coming out similar to what they did with the 3DS after 3D Land & MK8, they can't expect it to sell past this year if they don't.

_-EDMIX-_2655d ago

just like people like you got use out of the Wii U?

This is not about what you personally like , this is about 190 million people decided to not purchase Nintendo's Hardware that decided to purchase it the previous generation.

DeadlyOreo2655d ago

190 million lol? Where'd you hear that.

acekaze2654d ago (Edited 2654d ago )

I can really understand your position, when i bought my WII U I was still living with my 2 younger brothers, while everyone was crying splitscreen and COOP in local games was dead, I was having a blast playing mario kart, nintendo land, super smash, super mario party, wii u party and so many other games, its a damn shame people will downvote you just for disagreing with what theyfeel its right, this coming from someone owing a wii u, a ps4 and a pc for gaming.

All gaming is great and adapted to different type of people, only reason I wont get a switch at least on release, is because i have not much use for the portability it offers, mostly because i have a ps4 + 2 steam links, that allow me to play all my pc games eithert on bedroom or living room, since I left home i lost a bit the appeal for the splitscreen games / coop, hence why i decided to get a ps4, funny enough, i keep playing games i could easily get on my PC just to have an excuse to play on the PS4 while I wait for kingdom hearts which was my main reason to getting a ps4 in 1 place.

Neonridr2654d ago

@EDMIX - well sure. Mario 3D World, MK8, Bayonetta 2, Smash, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Mario Maker, Zombi U, NSMBU, Lego City Undercover, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Rayman Legends and many others all got good use out of my machine... I definitely got more than $350 worth of use from the thing.

2654d ago
_-EDMIX-_2654d ago (Edited 2654d ago )

Dead- 190..

The DS sold 160 million
the 3DS sold 60 millon
the wii sold 100 million
the Wii U sold 14 million

Simple math bud.

I'm still not sure why you guys are trying to deny this despite how easy it is to calculate.

Sorry but in the ballpark of 188 million did not return to purchase this company's Hardware.

Maybe it's because their fan base is dwindling maybe it's because of the increased rise of mobile or casual gaming maybe it's all of the above...

But there's no reason to deny math and logic.

Unless you have another way of calculating that lol

@neo- if you personally like the wii u ,help yourself, don't get me wrong I'm not saying this in a personal respect, if that was worth it to you then that's completely fine but millions of Gamers clearly disagree evident by wii u historically low embarrassing sales.

What you have to consider it I think I'm getting more games in the next 3 months that are all brand new titles as opposed to Ports then what you just listed...

That's probably why the PlayStation 4 is breaking records in sales.

Just saying enjoy the games that you got with the wii u, but regardless of how you try to spin it I'm still purchasing titles like Yakuza zero Persona 5 , Resident Evil 7 , Mass Effect ,kingdom.hearts 2.8 ,Nioh,Horizon zero Dawn, Nier...

Just in months bud, not
YEARS....months.

I get Wii u is enough for you and those are some fun games, but that is just a extremely small amount compared to the competition.

People like you got use out of the Wii U but haven't you noticed the most people are not jumping for joy at the small list of titles that you just listed?

Consider that I recognize that lots of the small Niche titles that I play or not selling huge millions in Breaking records and selling platforms lol

Nioh isn't going to be breaking any huge records, not likely.

My response is simply pointing out that the majority of Gamers clearly are not going to look at that list and run out to buy a Wii U.... I mean you have to completely understand that at least to a degree.

Edit.
-yes but you are forgetting one simple fact here my friend ... my friends own a Wii u, I could play the system anytime I want in fact I'm buying Zelda for the Wii U to play over their house.

Neonridr2654d ago

@EDMIX - yes but you are forgetting one simple fact here my friend.. I also own a PS4.

I too am getting Resident Evil 7, Horizon Zero Dawn, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 Remix (all preordered) and possibly Mass Effect. But I am ALSO getting Zelda Breath of the Wild.

So how am I losing? I would say you are losing because you are getting less games than me. You will have less overall experiences than me. I am enjoying the best of both worlds. So try to spin it any way you want, but you lose.

iofhua2654d ago

I'm excited about it. It's exactly what I've wanted for a long time. I got fed up with the disc thrashing in my Ps3, and I refuse to buy another disc-loading console because of the slowness and waiting.

The N64 is still to date my favourite console. I never waited for a game to load on the N64. I'm hoping the Switch can repeat that.

I'm also happy they ditched the touchscreen controller that the Wii U had. It will be nice to have a controller with just sticks and buttons again.

I think the price is fair. I will get one at launch, if I can find one available. Nintendo is notorious for never shipping enough units for anything.

The only thing I'm not excited about, is paid online. But I might suffer it, if the games are good.

Can't agree. Even though I didn't buy the Wii U. Bought the wii and only used it for a month before selling it. And bought the 3ds. I would like Nintendo to keep making consoles. They bring a lot of interesting ideas and unique ways of playing video games something Sony and Microsoft hasn't done. As much as I would like the switch right now I'll wait about a year for more games to be pumped out. Besides I have to many PS4 games I still haven't been able to beat.

bluefox7552655d ago

The problem is, what you see as "interesting ideas and unique ways to play games", most everyone else sees as pointless gimmicks. Wouldn't it be nice if we could play Nintendo games without having to buy a Nintendo console?

princejb1342654d ago

@bluefox755

Of course it would be nice. I'm a Sony fan since ps1
That doesn't mean I'm going to downplay the competition.
You seem to be selfishly wanting Nintendo to fail just to see Mario or any other of their first party studios in your preferred console.

OhMyGandhi2654d ago

and that really is the crux of the issue. Nintendo does bring alot of interesting ideas to the table, but they are absolutely tone-deaf and refuse to listen to the market. The Switch is a console that isn't really made for western audiences. The last nintendo system I bought was the gamecube, because of its shear horsepower. Smash (still) looks great on the system, same goes for Metroid Prime, Twilight Princess, Mario Sunshine, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, and Wind Waker. The gamecube was exciting because it showed that Nintendo WANTED to compete with the big boys. It had the power to back it up, and had some excellent mature experiences as well.

The people who played Nintendo back then have grown up, gotten jobs and are probably raising families now. Gamers in general are getting more comfortable with more difficult games at a far faster rate than before. Hell, kids who can barely walk are adept at mobile games on Ipad.

Charge 399 for a badass console, with a plethora of games with split screen support and online multiplayer, improve value of online subscription by giving away more then one NES game a month, and let third party developers do their thing.

Give me more then Zelda and Mario.

Hell, I'd say that most of their games should resemble Bungie's Halo 2 effort. Where you can play split screen with four players, and bring them ONLINE to play against others. Now that is something that is sorely lacking these days, and I'd love Nintendo prioritize that aspect.

MrChicagoWind2654d ago

If Nintendo truly merges their console and handheld departments, the Nintendo Switch will extremly successful.

dcbronco2654d ago

Who's betting Microsoft throws a ton of money at Nintendo for exclusivity on a lot of those Nintendo exclusives. Nintendo on Xbox will sell some Xboxes in Japan. They could give Nintendo 25 million each for exclusivity on the next Zelda, Mario and a few other things and finally sell consoles in Japan.

let's see...

2 million consoles shipped by end of march (if you didn't know, preorders sold out in one day) times ~$300 per console equals roughly $600,000,000. logical to conclude around 2 million (mostly zelda) games will be sold by the end of march at $60 a piece.

yep, these guys don't have the slightest clue about what consumers want. /s

jer11222655d ago

The same thing happen for the Wii U and actually sold over two and a half million within the first couple of months . of course when something first comes out ppl will buy it but long-term it has nothing coming out for it until Mario. Splatoon in the summer but I don't think that's a huge system seller

_-EDMIX-_2655d ago

You seem to be in this bizarre delusion that all they need to do is sell about 12 million in there fine.

Never mind what happens at the end of March Nintendo needs to be worrying about what happens in the next 5 years...

PlayStation 1 PlayStation 2 Playstation 3 and clearly PlayStation 4 did not just receive all their sales overnight in a single month.

They got their sales from continuous support and a boatload of games.

To my understanding they literally have millions and millions of fans of Zelda in Mario Kart that could sell this product within the first several months what you have to question where are going to be the consumers that are going to keep this platform afloat wants those diehards purchase the platform? Then it the same fans purchase the Wii U?

Funny....

Platforms don't sell simply based on how they do the first couple months they sell based on the support that they received four years and if we you was any indication I don't have that much faith in this company to outperform the PlayStation in regards to its consistency.

As of right now the PlayStation is the most consistent console Series in the history of Gaming and if Nintendo is going to beat anyone they should be looking to beat the PlayStation series and for them to do that they actually have to put up or shut up

Make more games by more teams and match their online service if you want to beat the PlayStation 4 it's pretty simple how you beat the PlayStation but it is very clear but lots of companies don't want to put their money where their mouth is in regards to this type of support.

what's so sad is it makes me appreciate even companies like Microsoft because as much as a dog on Microsoft they at least have enough respect for their consumers to evenly compete with the competition and continuously match Sony with features so that way their fans stay.

Talk to me when they are buying more teams , producing more new intellectual properties and actually trying to match PlayStation Network and Xbox Live's in regards to features

you can't promise to beat McDonald's yet you refuse to put drive-thrus and refuse to have a dollar menu etc.

at some point you're really not competing with McDonald's you're actually competing against your fans...

The drive-thru and the value menu are successful not because of McDonald's but because of the fans that openly make it clear that they enjoy this feature.

For Nintendo to purchase new teams and build up their first party to match Sony Computer Entertainment is to say they'd rather Gamble not getting the sales then spend the money to give the consumers what they want people are buying PlayStation 4 in record numbers for a reason they trust the company to produce content.

Based on the Wii U sales it is very clear that their fan base is rapidly dwindling to a degree that we've never seen in the gaming community

pcz2655d ago

lets be honest, if nintendo released a branded house brick, they would sell millions of them.

some people will buy anything nintendo. a major console release from nintendo will always sell millions, initially. but the question is, whether or not it will sell to anyone other than nintendo fans.

but put it this way- im a nintendo fan, and even i am having a hard time justifying buying one at its current price

Angeljuice2655d ago

They know how to fleece their fans, that has never been in doubt.

You wanted to pay to use your phone for game chat? That's what you were hoping for from your new console?

Nintendo must really want to keep hold of you. Utterly dilusional.

deafdani2654d ago

@jer1122: Splatoon sold around 4 million copies on Wii U. That's superb sales for a new IP, especially considering it was selling to a consumer base of 13 million users.

So, I think it's safe to say that Splatoon 2 can be a system seller.

JLynn9432654d ago

@edmix: "what's so sad is it makes me appreciate even companies like Microsoft because as much as a dog on Microsoft they at least have enough respect for their consumers to evenly compete with the competition and continuously match Sony with features so that way their fans stay. "

On the contrary, I'm glad Nintendo has enough respect for gaming to be constantly innovating and offering something different rather than moar power. Maybe VR will work out this time for Sony, but that's nothing new. Maybe AR will be something. Nintendo already has some of that (albeit nothing crazy).

A hybrid, portable console isn't even necessarily an identical market. Nintendo has dominated portables for years. They're now releasing a super powerful portable. It also acts as a home console, which is a great feature. I don't love the pricing, but I appreciate what they're doing. Plus, if they attract the 3DS/Vita market, they could still sell a lot of these.

Would I love a Nintendo console that got quality versions of every big third party series? Of course. Then I wouldn't have had to buy a PS4. However, I still appreciate (and want) the differences and innovation they provide and know for sure that it's going to be a quality system with a number of really great games.

Big_Game_Hunters2655d ago

If Nintendo goes third party, then you truly only will see Mario, Zelda, and pokemon. Say goodbye to everything else, Without hardware profits they wouldn't have the money to fund All their other games.

UltraNova2655d ago (Edited 2655d ago )

Console makers never made their money from hardware. Its software where they make 90%+ of their profits.

As for the matter at hand, I dont believe Nintendo will ever stop making hardware. But from what I've seen so far they might be forced to change their mindset after the Switch or face their worst times ever. I mean what the hell are they thinking with those prices??

iplay1up22654d ago

I bought XboxOne, instead. I got Rare Replay 30 games including Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Conkers Bad Fur Day Etc, Gears of War remastered with all DLC, Witcher 3, Fallout 4, RE Revelations 2, Metro Redux and Last Light remastered, COD Modern Warefare, all for $323!

I am not getting Switch till there are more games for it. If Zelda ends up being okay on Wii U I will be more than happy to pick it up for that. If it chugs too much on Wii U, I will hold off for the Switch version.

WickedLester2654d ago

Well, I want it and I'm a consumer. My 6 year old son REALLY wants it and he' a consumer.

Nintentional2654d ago

Yet you said you're buying a Switch day one? Lmao you better be living in Japan. Biggest flip flopper troll on n4g, I swear.

Its a powerful handheld with killer first party titles. If you own a ps4 or xb1 you can see how it differs from them. Games like pokemon will ensure it won't fail.

Thatguy-3102655d ago

But it's not a handheld though. It's there home console.

EddieNX 2655d ago (Edited 2654d ago )

There home console that is fully portable? The dock doesn't make it any more powerful therefore its a handheld, the tech is in the handheld not the dock.

@utalkin to me. The dock doesn't add extra processing power buddy it just tskes it off portable mode try again.

Utalkin2me2654d ago (Edited 2654d ago )

@EddieNX

My god you people are embarrassing. The dock does make it more powerful. So yes it is a home console. If the dock didn't have any bearing on power at all then you would have a argument.

Would you people at least research before you go spewing lies.

pcz2654d ago

you shouldnt write comments while drinking kool aid

Omnislashver362655d ago

How it differs from them? Different isn't always better. It has useless portability features other than sitting in a bed and playing games, or letting someone else watch the TV. Hardly anybody is going to bring this giant tablet thing outside, and that's precisely why it won't sell well.

Sirk7x2655d ago

It's not really all that much bigger than my 3DS XL, and I bring that thing with me everywhere. Nintendo is first and foremost looking at their home market in Japan I believe, opposed to Sony, who receives most of their sales abroad. Home console sales in Japan are almost nonexistent comparatively. They do however, love handhelds, especially the 3DS. Culture and lifestyles are different there, and many people game on the go. I imagine the Switch to be very successful in Japan, especially when a Monster Hunter and Pokemon game are inevitably released.

Knushwood Butt2654d ago

Love Nintendo software and hate the hardware.

Scatpants2655d ago

I think the hardware looks great. It's the games they showed that were underwhelming. Zelda, Xenoblade and Disgaea 5 are an ok start though.

eferreira2654d ago

Just imagine what the Nintendo devs could do with the PS4 and Xbox tech and ui.

Nintendo lately wants to be a cheaper price point to attract more people. Nintendo online, ui and underpowered systems put a hinder on th devs.

kaiserxblue2654d ago

Well too bad for you, cause if you love that software as you said then you got no other choice but to buy their hardware in order to experience their games.
Most likely you will never buy a Switch no matter how much you say you "love" their software cause either you cannot afford it or cause you "can't justify a console for 1st party games only". In any case the rules are settled and Nitendo ain't going 3rd party.... in afct I would just fire my staff and keep the IP's so nobody get to experience the games ever...but that's just me.
