Software. More specifically, developing internal talent, sticking with IP's that aren't pulling the biggest numbers to try to build it into something special like a franchise and don't handcuff teams to existing IP's forever.

Everyone has been complaining about this issue about the Xbox division since minimum the last 3 years of the 360's life, when the PS3 had like 30 exclusives coming out and Xbox 360 had 2 or 3 the last few years.

Microsoft has boatloads of money (this has been brought up multiple times over the years) and never really invests into expanding the Xbox's first party, ever. What does that tell you?

They have internally very rarely created new intellectual properties for the most part if Microsoft supporting something new they likely either don't own the team or they don't own the property.

it's very rare that they actually got to spend money to create anything from the ground up from a team they own.

@lonn- I don't disagree with you what's so sad is the 360 was such a great platform that even with the red ring of death people continue to keep purchasing it because of its popularity and instead of growing this and supporting this new-found install base Microsoft basically went full-blown casual with Kinect and late into its life cycle simply just stopped supporting it.

Sony was losing the majority of that generation yet they were the ones that were creating new content year after year with their main teams.

In my personal opinion it technically should have been the reverse it should have been Microsoft that had the money to keep creating new intellectual properties and it should have been Sony that was playing it safe and only supporting established considering their financial situation.

Microsoft's problems are their own fault based on their own insecurities in fear of supporting in investing something new.

As long as games perform fine on PS4 and Pro, there is no reason for the average (that is, where MOST consumers lie on a normal distribution) consumer to dump what I'm fairly certain will be $400+ on a console just to get games to run on the console equivalent to "Ultra High" settings.

And it's funny how checkerboard rendering has actually been praised where any loss in quality is quite negligible and here you call it BS.

You know what's grand? Sony apparently can't afford a better network, yet Microsoft, with their boundless resources and aggression, can't afford to step their software game up.

None of that speaks to a strategic advantage that Sony has just that it's doing better at selling more consoles. Microsoft and Xbox are future proof and will be the dominant platform to build games on for the forseeable future. PC is already top dog when it comes to graphics, resolution, and FPS. The same assets for PC will be unpacked and used for Scorpio as soon as you put an Xbox one game into the console. The fanboys can act like power doesn't matter anymore but for the last few years all the media has been talking about is power power power, so you're not getting away with it. 1. Xbox is now just part of Microsoft's hardware division so it doesn't have to worry about no funding.
2. Azure and cloudgine are making A blueprint for all the big publishers and developers to follow with Crackdown 3. In five years you will have games on my Xbox that just can't be played on the PlayStation. You are going to see a technological gap and it is going to be big and growing fast.
3. UWP and windows 10 make it easy for developers to make one game code and have the devices unpack the proper specs.
4. Developers have to do a lot more to get the games working on the pro then they will for Scorpio.
E3 is going to be amazing this year.

The point of the business is to make money and Microsoft has no problem there. Xbox is now in the division with surface laptops, look it up.
Universal Windows platform allows apps and games to be played across all devices on the ecosystem with minimal coding. By saying what you said you're being dishonest, because that's with the people at Microsoft have been saying. One of you is being dishonest.

Okay, Uncharted is fair game, as is Gran Turismo...sort of. There are plenty of GT games, but they're VERY sporadic and PD isn't nearly as prolific as Turn 10. We do get plenty of sequels on both machines--the difference is in reliance. As it stands, we're likely to get one new game a generation for The Last of Us. God of War 4 looks very different from the previous games, so I wouldn't say that much. It doesn't even appear mechanically similar. Oh, and you should really play the Valkyria Azure Revolution demo. It plays nothing at all like the previous entries. It may as well be a different IP. Anyway, Uncharted has really remained largely the same over the years. Totally agree there. I imagine the same will be true of The Last of Us Part II. Ratchet, eh, okay, I'll give you that one. But some of Sony's IPs are pretty young. There's Gravity Rush, for example. But we've also had games like The Last Guardian, Ni November Kuni, World of Final Fantasy, and Bloodborne with games like Horizon on the.....horizon. You see, while Sony does dabble in frequent sequels, they don't rely on the same ones nearly as much as Microsoft. As it stands, we have 5 Gears games available on Xbox One, 8 Halo games, and 5 Forza. To compare with your list, you have 1 The Last of Us, 1 God of War, 4 Uncharted games, 0 Gran Turismo games, 1 Ratchet and Clank, and no Valkyria Chronicles games. Of course, I'm counting backwards compatible titles. Without them for fairness, you still have 5 Halo games, 2 Gears games, and 4 Forza games.

If Microsoft brought back PGR or Perfect Dark, I wouldn't be upset. We don't see them often. I think Crackdown, Scalebound, and Sea of Thieves are all very welcome additions. But what I am saying is that we're over three years in and, Sunset Overdrive and Ori and the Blind Forest withstanding, nothing has been particularly eye-catching and new, at least for me. It's still Halo, Gears, and Forza. Mind you, they're well made, but it's like FOX bragging about their fall lineup only to give you more Family Guy, American Dad, and Empire.

First, I'm a bit shocked this is coming from Eurogamer, who usually has its head so far up Sony's butt that they couldn't see an XB1 if they wanted to. Now they are making an article saying the XB1 has momentum and a golden opportunity. lol!! Maybe he's being sarcastic. I don't know. Sure Microsoft has a golden opportunity to sell more XBox units once the Scorpio releases, but if he thinks they have any chance of catching the PS4 in worldwide sales, their nuts. In the U.S or UK, there still may be a chance, but worldwide it's a rap. Like last gen with the Wii (Nintendo pulled the plug early), there's no chance PS3 or 360 is catching the Wii either.

Microsoft best move would be to acquire some new 1st party studios. I suggest looking at all the developers who are making Win10 PC games and try to snatch of few studios who are working on exceptional games. Then they should look at some big named studios in the US and around the world. They still should rethink making a few exclusives just for the Scorpio (no XB1 or PC). Sure they don't want to leave other XB1 gamers behind, but they need to move some of them forward into the future. They could always make Scorpio exclusives, timed exclusive if need be. If they want to sell more systems, give gamers a reason to.

Xbox One S looked to do a lot of favours for Microsoft and Scorpio, whilst being able to boast as the most powerful console ever made, it will take a lot of right moves on Microsoft's part to avoid the issues that the PS4 Pro has suffered from. Their focus looks to be on ecosystem/hardware primarily this year, but that doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to the likes of Scalebound, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2 and a few others (and the inevitable unannounced titles that might be revealed soon) but software is where they're currently lacking and they need to invest more in their internal studios/buying up other studios. God knows Microsoft is a financial giant compared to any other competitors so I want to see a renewed focus in bringing new, exciting IPs to the Xbox ecosystem. Halo, Gears etc. are amongst the greatest game series' I've ever played but I now want to see the next Halo/Gears franchise and thus far, they haven't delivered on that front.

Ya I want to see MS and Nintendo rebound and claim their spot in the market. A competitive market is a healthy one, as much as I love Sony and my PS4 I don't want to see them completely dominate. History has shown us that usually doesn't work out in our favor, companies become complacent and start to figure out how they can get more of your money but give you less.

Selling 50% as much as the dominant competitor in a market is no small feat. Look at the smart phone market where iOS only has around 15% market share next to Android which has nearly all the rest, but nobody would claim iOS isn't providing decent competition.

Some people seem to think that because Xbox and Playstation aren't neck and neck this generation like they were last generation that somehow Xbox is a total failure and isn't providing competition. These people don't seem to realize that it is not the norm for there to be two leading competitors neck and neck like that.

The Scorpio will sell well, im pretty much certain of that. But in no way will it put them back in the race in terms of market share, that dream is dead and the console wars been over for a while now. The best MS can do is to build momentum for the next gen. Those games listed are going to be good but I thought you guys are hyping many many more games than just those ? Five of those games are not coming out this year some of them probably not even next year. You're more likely to see a sequel to The Order than you will from Recore, SSoD, QB, or Alan Wake. MS isn't known for supporting games that failed to strike a fire and move tons of consoles and copies of software. Sony is already making a sequel to Knack, and has implied they weren't opposed to a sequal to The order. Gravity Rush was a moderate success on Vita, and they are making a sequel to it. So on and so forth.

If it's a MS game you can't buy or play it via Steam. You have to use the Xbox app. Same goes for certain Uplay or Origin games. But at least those can be added as a 'non steam game', Xbox can't.

PC players in the main (like myself) would love to use Steam universally but in this case you have to play via Xbox app using an Xbox live account on Windows 10.

I guess you aren't a PC gamer or you'd know this? It's a pain in our ass.

Scalebound doesn't have a definite release date just 2017 and it's only on the XB1 and MS Windows. But as usual the fanboy goggles erase people's memory. During those months that MS won consecutively wasn't there some reason behind that? Yes they released the S and it's beautiful and great and that helped.

I do remember some company announcing something that was coming out in November. Coincidentally, they lost the sales race for some months after that announcement even though not by that much. When that other company released that product in November, they not only became that sales leader again (Nov. and Dec.), they also erased whatever sales lead MS got over those winning months. Maybe it's just me but I kind of seen/saw the connection.

Both are doing fine but one is just on a whole other level. I'm sure the Scorpio will do well and I can't wait to hear more about it. Will it be more powerful than the Pro. Well, hell yes it will be. With it coming out a year later, it should be. Nothing really to brag about. Will it destroy the Pro. Hell no it won't because it's a great system and will be even cheaper once the Scorpio drops.

Right now 900p and 1080p is no difference but 1800 and 2160p will be Massive completlydestroyingIcannowtell thedifferenceevenwithouta4kTV type of system. If anything it's going to be how it is now except reversed and all the fanboys scripts are going to do the same. It's going to get ugly and all of a sudden everyone will have 4k TVs to take advantage of these systems.

It all started when Sony got hacked. I find it ridiculous that people still think it to be bad. My buds never have issues that are worth mentioning. Back on my PS3 days I loved it and never had a single issue until it got taken down for those couple weeks. Funny thing is, Live has gotten hacked a few times before, just never as long, but almost as bad. No one ever mentions that. Even back then, PSN was almost as good, it was just as stable, just didn't have as many features, and now it is overall as good, and better in some ways.

I have both systems and my Xbox live is paid off till 2018 sometime. Where people get this better network stuff is beyond me. The only difference is PS allows a lot more headset options, like PS3 did, so if someone bought a crappy Bluetooth for their phone it showed. On Xbox everyone has the standard one in the box and if you wanted you could buy a certified alternative you could. Therefore it was a more standardized sound quality from players. That's the ONLY place I can think this myth came from.
There is literally no difference outside of that. Please don't even begin to bring up stores. The Xbox one store has been a mess forever. It's better than at launch. Compared to the PlayStation store it is a mess of menus within menus.

It's a fair article which makes some good points.It will be interesting to see what happens. The biggest factor for the Scorpios success will be its price point. If MS are claiming it to be a console that can can run games at 4K 60 fps consistently then I don't see it being very cheap. But let's wait and see.

I dont agree with the momentum argument at all. People aren't rushing out to buy a Scorpio now because it hasnt released yet. We don't even have official confirmation of specs. The Q1 exclusive line up is also pretty much non-existent for the Xbox one besides halo wars 2 (This isnt a game that will move consoles) - people need to be honest and realistic about this.

Sony on the other hand, ended 2016 strongly with the last guardian and will start 2017 off strong with a Q1 packed with exclusive games. It's simply just more appealing

At the end of the day, The console with the stronger exclusive line up will always remain king and at the moment this is certainly where the ps4 and ps4 pro have the upper hand.

Yeah I'm glad Microsoft started the Play Anywhere program. I absolutely hate how fragmented gaming is. Having to own three or four redundant pieces of hardware just to play the games I want to play is the worst thing about gaming. Anything that takes us to a more open gaming market is something I applaud. I would hate to have to own 4 Blu-ray players just to watch the movies I like, but that's basically what we deal with in gaming and it sucks.

Boom. I had a long rant on here the other day saying the same thing. PS5 will likely come 2 years after the Scorpio. So if MS decided to compete with Sony again directly and release a system in the same month, then people would have to buy another system in 2 years after Scorpio.

Now, look at all the people who complained (and still are) about the situation now launching 3 or 4 years later. Imagine the outrage then. People now are bragging about the beastly 6tflops. Imagine the PS5 with 8 to 12 Tflops. BeastlyER...Haha

I'm still a little skeptical about how well this expensive console will sell. It took ps3, some time in the beginning with the higher price. It began selling more with a price drop. If Microsoft drops the price within a year, it might sell good, otherwise it better have some games pushing the system to sell. No games on a expensive console is a hard sell.

find it funny that when Sony fans had the more powerful console, they preached higher power, better frame rate, but now it has changed to a more powerful console for ms, it doesn't matter its now about more exclusive games suddenly. News flash people it does not matter what part of the year or what the developers are doing, new fresh content is always the way to go and you peeps go about as if it's some new information you have suddenly come across.

It's pathetic how that view has changed because Sony player base knew they would no longer have the most powerful console on the market. Sony fans also constantly preach about what ms need to do to win or catch up, they say exclusive games, yet Sony themselves haven't been the best with exclusivity and nintendo have beat me and Sony for some years on that end.

when it comes down to it the big 3 have there days, have the dry spells and at some point Nintendo will have there day again where no matter what the other console devs do, sometimes it just isn't enough to catch up or stay side by side.

That being said and forget all the fanboy crap as it really is for kids who have not learned to appreciate all sides of the pond when it comes to gaming or grown up fully. A real gamer in my eyes opens there mind up to everything in the industry, not buy something and suddenly it becomess untouchable and godly that it can't do anything wrong. Sony did get it rite, but just because Sony got it rite in places to bring it out on top, does not mean the others failed, that would be a hell of crappy statement to make.

Remember nothing is untouchable and at any time something can always be knocked off, but in my eyes it's not about who's on top. It's about the fact I enjoy the industry, love what the developers strive for, it's my hobby, my life, sometimes I'll fall out with the industry, but then it brings me rite on back.

MS has earned the ridicule directed at them by repeatedly making bold claims and not delivering on them. By talking up and focusing on hardware and triple A games and doing little with it other than PC ports, waiting for third parties to come to them, only to place restrictions like favoring online/XBL Gold/subscription fees which then effected game quality.

im so happy the us vs them mentality will be over soon between ms and sony fanboys. Because once ms releases the scorpio it starts that company on a path where consoles don't have generations anymore. Where as sony will stay true to the traditional console path. In 10 years when sony is at PlayStation 6 or 7, MS will be on Xbox "fill in code name" and for a year or so here and there ms will be the power king and then it'll go back to ps because of the mid cycle upgrades for sony where as ms pushes out essentially new hardware every 3 years.
