The new year may barely be upon us, but Microsoft is already turning up the hype machine for its upgraded Project Scorpio Xbox console, which releases in 2017.

ninsigma2670d ago

Yeah it definitely seems a bit early to be starting that hype machine. Maybe we're gonna get an info blow out soon.

Overload2670d ago

Yeah, there is no doubt the information for it will start being generated in 2017, it's just a bit of a stretch to call it the year of it. There shouldn't really be much to tell either, if it's just an upgraded Xbox One.

1Victor2669d ago

I think it's a little bit too early to call it "the year of Scorpio" there's a lot of things that could go wrong and push the system to next year like what happen to the PS3.

XanderZane2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

@Overload
PS4 Pro is just an upgraded PS4 as well. You still do back flips over it. lol!! You so salty. Relax, PS4 will always have their worldwide lead.

@oasdada
Pretty sure they mean the Scorpio is coming out in 2017. 2016 was year of the PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim and PSVR. Was it not? I don't game much on PC. Play more on game consoles. Most PC games will come to PS4 Pro and XBox Scorpio anyways. No need for a PC.

oasdada2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

@xander
Thats because no one said 2016 was the yesr of the ps4 pro.. just the year of ps4.. plus even if u have a pc u still need a ps4 pro to play ps exclusives in higher res or quality, on the other hand scorpio is just an upgraded xbox with not much incentive to own one specially if its priced more than 400$ s

rainslacker2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

Ten bucks says they release some interesting info right before Horizon launches.

The hardware is about the only thing they have to hype right now since their games aren't really doing much to drive the train.

That being said, people seem to forget that MS thinks the year only happens between October and December for their marketing. The rest of the year is meaningless in the grand scheme of things to them.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 2669d ago
ninsigma2670d ago

Considering it doesn't release until the end of the year it doesn't make sense to call it the year of the Scorpio.

I am interested in seeing the final product though. See real hands on from. Digital foundry or something instead of things like that garbage fluff piece from e3.

2670d ago
demonddel2670d ago

What else yall gonna come up with the PS5 quit the hate The Mighty Scorpio is coming

JackBNimble2669d ago

Only 11 months to go for the mighty Scorpio, I guess the next 11 months for the pro don't count for much either does it.

sk8ofmnd2669d ago

I think if it means the year of scorpio as the year it releases it sounds fitting. Just like 2016 was the year of ps4p and psvr.

Now in a fanboy state of mind... If they are saying 2017 is the year of the scorpio slaying sony... Theres no fucking way. Let the fanboys have hope the scorpio will dominate... They have been so adament about thinking this way why would the scorpios launch be any different.

Tumaras2669d ago

I'm confident Scorpio will be a nice piece of hardware. I'm far less confident that Xbox will have must-have hit exclusive games that justify buying it. And that doesn't include cross-play games I can just play on PC, or big-name games that disappoint (cough Halo 5).

Xbox is way, way, behind Sony in that area. And the 2017 games coming out like Horizon, Nier Automata, Last of Us 2, etc. will only extend that difference. I'd like to play those in 4k. I'd have a tough time convincing myself to buy a Scorpio to play Cuphead.

GrubsterBeater2669d ago

Well it would make sense in the way that MS tends to only consider the last 3 months of the year as "the entire year".

So for them, releasing games all year really means releasing all their games the last 3 months of the year. When the Scorpio releases during the holidays, they will then say it dominated the whole year.

It is the MS way.

What Phil is saying that "this year is when Scorpio comes out".

kneon2669d ago

I guess this just further confirms that Microsoft thinks the year is only a couple of months long :)

Amongunz2669d ago

What difference does it make... its called marketing.... every company including sony does it to get everyone all debating pro vs. Scorpio blah blah blah. The campaign began last year and will only ramp up from here .. and thats just fine.

cheri262669d ago

I'd rather have a Switch with Breath of the Wild.

QUIMICOMORTAL2669d ago

Well, xbone is dead in the water, it's only natural they start looking for a new savior.

Just like Nintendo did.

XStation4pio_Pro2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

Oh my gosh. They are talking about a product that will release this year! The nerve. I sure am glad nobody has done that before!! /s

@gtr: logic is flawed. Xbox is no longer a console but a platform and there will be plenty of exclusive for the platform. And even with that, multi platform games will run better on Scorpio than on PS4 thanks to it ouspec'ing my beloved PS4 pro pretty much across the board substantially... oh and it will have uhd bluray as a bonus.

Major_Glitch2669d ago

Why would I buy a Scorpio? MS doesn't have a lot of good games. And the few they do have can be bought on PC.

XanderZane2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

They could easily release it in the Summer 2017 if they chose to. We know they will announce more info at the E3. It's not impossible. Still, if they do release it at the end of 2017, then 2018 would be the year of the Scorpio since that's when most of its games would be released. With the Switch launching in March, it would be silly for Microsoft to release Scorpio so soon.

@RegorL
There have already been interviews will developers who already have Scorpio beta dev kits. Pretty sure they know the specs by now. Phil has already mentioned the developers are working on games that support Scorpio. XB1 and PS4 were not finished products. That was pretty obvious after they launched.

RegorL2669d ago

"They could easily release it in the Summer 2017 if they chose to." and it is ready...

I hope third party studios have access to prototype hardware (beta SOC) right now but my gut feeling is that they do not. They probably have access to PCs with hardware said to equal Scorpio performance.
- Not the same thing...

XBox One was not a finished product, it has the feel of a quickly scrambled system.
PS4, PS4 Light, PS4 Pro all feels like finished products as does XBox One S.
We will soon see what category Scorpio ends up in. (It should be shown at E3 - at least a mock up)

JasonKCK2669d ago

Sure brings out the fear in you

Muzikguy2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

It's just like how they automatically assume that holidays = all year. This thing could release mid December and they'll still claim it was the year of Scorpio. I don't understand how people keep saying that MS isn't a chronic liar, but whatever

LastCenturyRob2669d ago

MS hasn't stated..although it probably won't release until end 2017, MS might start selling shortly after E3... Won't know until MS pulls the trigger.

PistolsAtDawn2669d ago

You're always the first to post..and always on some sort of fan boy kick. Its pathetic

- Teenberg Wisdom says article for me..

... these dipshit never cease to amaze me. 15 years of vaporware, copy&cats and hats .. now they claim 2017 to be the YEAR of their next gen system .. scheduled for late 2017. Unless they plan on realeasing in first half of 2017 (which wont happen, nothing conrecte was shown (design, final price/specs etc..), this just shows again what a bunch of snobs these folks are.

One thing is sure, after Forza 7 is released to critical acclaim .. they will start the .dlc machinery few months after. Wish Japan was still the leading market ... #THANKSNIPPON

rainslacker2669d ago

I'll be happy when MS starts hyping up some new exciting games to go with that X1 I brought back at the end of 2015 for QB.

My biggest hope right now is they're holding back all the good game announcements for Scorpio's release to boost the hype, so maybe I'll find something I want to play on that X1.

IamTylerDurden12669d ago

Are they serious? All MS has done since they announced this things existence a yr and a half before it was scheduled to release is hype it like crazy. It's scary bc all they've had to hype is "6 tflops" and that's it. I can only imagine what will happen when they show fugazi footage of the next Forza game. Have they not been hyping it already?

Trekster_Gamer2669d ago

Yes, that is what MS has stated all along?? What's your point?

MRMagoo1232670d ago

some times it really is all you can do from how desperate they seem at MS to try to generate some kind of hype and I can understand why though.......its because they have nothing at all to talk about games-wise so they are hyping Scorpio the entire year till it releases, well.....hype Scorpio and announce more backwards compatible games /shrug I guess but I don't get that excited about playing old games I can already play.

zidane13412669d ago

Nothing to talk about game wise....lmao that's funny.

@bg116

"Sony has shown their hand already. Don't expect much more unnanounced software from them for awhile. I wouldn't be surprised if their e3 is a rehash of just about everything from 2016."

I've heard this before... and it was just as wrong then as it is now.

Kribwalker2669d ago

@bg116

Last years E3 was mostly a rehash other then a couple not games that were new. The thing is, these Sony fans talk crap now, but wasn't the PlayStation VR hyped from the beginning of January until its October release last year? Must have been because they had nothing else to talk about right?

DigitalRaptor2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

Even with 3 brand new PlayStation hardware releases, Sony still brought the games in a big way last year.

Microsoft needs to be able to do that, and mostly waiting until the end of the year won't cut it, other than people talking about holidays sales which peak and then drop in mid-December and the new year.

It's funny you mention backwards compatible games, because... the Xbox twitter account asked what game they were most looking forward to in 2017, and the vast majority of the replies were asking for Black Ops 2. These guys are anticipating old games more than brand new upcoming exclusive games. No wonder their first-party lineup is a shambles and they're focusing more on bringing last-gen games to reflect on their glory years. https://twitter.com/Xbox/st...

2669d ago
cheri262669d ago

@bg116

The release doesn't matter we know for a fact they are going to be released. And I'd like to point out that Sony has more exclusives with confirmed release dates in the first four months of 2017 than Microsoft has games with confirmed release dates for the entire year.

2669d ago
rainslacker2669d ago

One thing we can take from all this is that MS is obviously looking at alienating the largest populace in the world....the chinese, because, as we all know, 2017 is actually the year of the rooster.

I suppose the Xbox Chicken isn't quite as catchy though.

Overload2670d ago

Feel free to talk about Xbox all you want. Calling a year the year of a system that is coming out at the end of the year is ridiculous. This is an upgraded Xbox One were talking about right?

whitesoxfalife19762670d ago

so sony didn't beat its chest about the VR and the Pro earlier in the year.....We are on the same network site, you forgot?

bluefox7552670d ago

@whitesoxfalife Most of the Sony articles were speculation and opinion based on released info. Most of the Scorpio articles are yet another Phil Spencer interview telling us what we already know and how great it will be. I really feel like they announced it too early as Spencer is forced to constantly come out and fill the void with fluff and nonsense.

MRMagoo1232670d ago

@bluefox

😂 I was thinking the exact same thing....they have announced it so early it's gonna be funny watching what they have to come up with each time to generate hype 😂 I see them running out of stuff to say pretty fast

LastCenturyRob2669d ago

Why so bitter over video game news?

Muzikguy2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

@bluefox

Maybe one of the void fillers will be how the MS cloud will multiply the power by 3 systems or something.

ThanatosDMC2669d ago

Well they cant talk about the cloud secret sauce anymore. They're hoping people forgot about that farce.

Xb1ps42669d ago

You just truly can't win when it comes to die hard fans...

"They didn't say anything soon enough I feel ripped off"

"It's too early to announce, what kind of hype will they have to keep us interested"

@bluefix

I guess it's better to keep things as a speculation rather than a truthful fact...

Yes they've been promoting the psvr (probably too early too) but they didn't call it the year of psvr. And no they didn't beat their chest about pro. Just before e3 they acknowledged it's existence and then only revealed AND promoted the device 2 moths prior to its release. The whole thing was pretty low key too because it's only a mid gen console and not a whole new one.

Edit: fixed autocorrect

Playstation holds a very special place in my heart to be honest and not even gaming memories. When leading up to the ps2 i preorder at one place end up moving down state and about two weeks before the launch i was hospitalized, gotten out two days to go and still manage to buy a ps2 from where i was staying nearly didn't make it i was the 5 to the last person to grab a ticket. Still with fresh open wounds gauge pads on my stomach treating myself while I wait in line....Again I am a gamer first.....

TKCMuzzer2670d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

Don't you think it would be nice of them to discuss what is coming out for their current customer base first, then promote the Scorpio nearer release time? It's a massive deflection technique and people are quite willing to go a long with it.
Even with the Pro coming out Sony went all out games at last years E3, this showed that their main target was to keep producing games for a console people owned, it doesn't feel like that with MS, it's like they can't wait for the release of the Scorpio. The bad thing about it, a lot of Xbox Fans are more excited about the hardware that was announced months ago than they are about what is releasing on their current hardware. It's all backwards and is not producing a trusted, solid foundation going forward.
Sony did not really beat it's chest bout the Pro, internet speculation did, they only announced it literally 2 months before release and to be fair it was pretty low key, this meant the OG PS4 was still kept current, MS are doing the complete opposite and if their not careful people will be bored before they show anything.

thexmanone2669d ago

Sony did not beat there chest about the pro because Shuhei Yoshida does not speak English. I'm sure if he did he would have been on tweeter also hyping the ps4 pro.

Why o why2669d ago

'because Shuhei Yoshida does not speak English'

Didn't know only Shu was permitted to hype . Kind of a false equivalence if you ask me. MS can hype both if they wanted to/could. TK is asking why MS dont spread some light on the current customers in regards to games in 2017 up until the scorpios release. I dont think thats asking too much.

whitesoxfalife19762669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

You know, yes I am excited about what MS is bringing to the table but not for the same reason as everyone else tho. First I'm excited because we are entering in era that as US CONSOLE GAMERS AS A WHOLE (PS/XBOX/SWITCH)....have not seen before this generation sorry had forgot this line

Sony have brought us VR headset and A more powerful console that can display 4k resolution that only up until this point that belongs to the pc gamers as an exclusive.....

MS is also doing the same but just a different view on it. MS is bridging the pc to console gap closer than we ever seen before with the play anywhere feature something that i thought i wud never see in my gaming life time.

I mean at the end of the day both these company is moving gaming forward thas what i care about moving forward and i think thas what MS is excited about closing the gap. And probably have more things to tell us but they cant hold it much longer....Remeber when phil said he wanted tell us about backwards compact but he had to refrain his self very hard til E32016 That was a bomb shell even before the nuke drop just saying.....

Aenea2669d ago

The Pro was officially mentioned right before E3, not the start of the year, PSVR was announced officially in what, March? That's also a bit different then starting on January 1 with nothing new to mention.

But it's okay, I don't mind MS hyping the Scorpio, just don't say Sony did the same thing when it was different...

starchild2669d ago

Sony announced their VR device in March 2014 (as they didn't like Oculus getting all the VR buzz) and we didn't get it until the end of 2016. And, yes, they hyped it that entire time, as did the fans. It's not any different.

I'm a fan of Sony's consoles, but some of you really need to stop demonizing Microsoft and finding any reason to hate on them. It's irrational and frankly embarrassing.

Gamist2dot02669d ago

Yup, it was different because to understand psvr, people needed to try it to believe it. Unlike any consoles, you can't explain it through video ads or pictures. Many people including me thought psvr was similar to 3D but we were wrong once we tried it. If Sony had kept psvr low key till e3, it would have sold very little.

Aenea2669d ago

@starchild

Yeah, I grant you that Sony did announce PSVR rather early as well, but did Sony also Tweet about it constantly? I dunno, it still feels a little different to me.

Meh, I don't think I was all that hating, just trying to point out it was a bit different, a lot different with the Pro actually, we can argue if it was with PSVR, still, this wasn't exactly demonizing or hating. I do dislike MS with a passion and that originated way before they even got into the console business...

thejigisup2669d ago

I call it the year of the xboxbro . At this point only hardcore roflcopter bros can truly be excited over this. The Scorpio is less powerful than a decent gaming PC, less games with less variety than what Sony has to offer and doesn't have the mobile market like I'm expecting the switch to have. Microsoft would have to really do something special with the Scorpio for me to be excited, or even impressed. So I personally get riled up bc add much as I love Microsoft I've been let down since the 360 rrod debacle. A handful of great games and some new hardware that is really going to be replaced by other hardware I own doesn't sound like it deserves it's own year of title. It's annoying that these big names throw buzz words and phrases out like it's going to be s gift from the gods. My expectation is that 2018 could be year of the Scorpio, but a whole lot of changes need to happen and I'm expecting hololens integration or some other really well thought out vr/ar experience with crazy and amazing games. I also want the MS store to be rebuilt from the ground up with full PC game support on the Scorpio. Give me this and I'll recognize your year of the Scorpio bs.

So you hate them for being excited for their next product?

JasonKCK2669d ago

Be honest, when MS talks about their products Sony fans come hating.

RegorL2669d ago

"when MS talks about their products"

IMHO MS do not talk much about their product, they are chewing the same information over and over again...
And so are news sites as there is no new information to talk about.
We have seen no leaks from developers, I would have expected that since so much already is known.
Be careful when reading what Microsoft really says about developers and Scorpio

“And as we’ve seen with people who have super high-end PCs, the visual fidelity; the immersiveness of these worlds, you know, graphically can be pretty incredible. But at the same time, more performance means people get to do other things, too. And so we’ve put that into the hands of the developers and it’ll be exciting to see what they create but being able to have that ‘runway’ and being able to work with them so far in advance… I think gamers are going to be really, really pleased with what comes out [of Project Scorpio].”
http://www.ausgamers.com/fe...

What do they REALLY say here?
- super high-end PCs ... can be pretty incredible
- more performance ... and we put that*into the hands of the developers

* "that" = more performance, not Scorpio itself

There is NO hit that developers has access to any Scorpio beta hardware. Sony had several generations of kits out with developers. Have anyone here seen a developer hinting on access to real Scorpio hardware?

rainslacker2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

As an Xbox owner, I'm kind of hating they're talking more about hardware than games.

Call me crazy, but I'd like to know what they have to be excited about to make that $300 purchase warranted. almost a year and a half I've had the system, and I have 7 games for it. 2 remasters, a sequel to one of those remasters, a disappointing 3rd person shooter, one fairly decent platformer which feels incomplete, a rather lackluster sequel to a once technically compelling franchise, and a racing game.

But hey, I'm sure the games will be better on Scorpio going forward. Can't wait to pay a speculated $500-600 to go through all this again one day. Maybe MS will do us all a solid, and release the system at a price of $400, so the games will be better....am I right?

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss4d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.
