Was Xbox One Doomed to Fail Right From the Start?

Microsoft should remember it's already succeeded, especially with the uber-popular Xbox 360. So was setting a $200 million sales goal for the Xbox One a hill too steep to climb?

They don't have a worldwide presence and that will always set them off on the wrong foot.

S2Killinit2745d ago

200 million? Have they ever reached 100? I think they should take it one step at a time.

Xbox brand is doing great...it seems whenever X1 has good news like outselling ps4 for a few months in the US the attacks kick in from the haters.

Any company would love to be the market leader in sales but at the same time you can be very successful by making a highly competitive product and methodically building on that. We just had news of X1 sales over ps4 in the US and UK, ironically just before the last couple NPD and recent UK sales news we have been hearing "the doom of xbox" due to "no true exclusives" talking points for months, yet X1 Slim did just fine against the console with all the exclusives. Futhermore we know X1 sales well in Australia, Canada & South America.

The problem is we don't get official sales news outside of the US & UK very often, but admittedly I know typically there are areas like Spain, France, Germany from what I've seen in the past where sales are generally mediocre, and of course poor in Japan but given past X1 sales reports in other regions beyond the US it's BS to say it doesn't have a worldwide presence= NO it just isn't as popular as ps....and Burger King isn't as popular as McDonald's....so what, folks who like the Whopper vs a BIG Mac don't care because it doesn't make their Whopper any less tasty.

I don't think Don Mattrick helped any

threefootwang2744d ago

Not sure why you got a disagree. It's the honest truth. Its because of Mattrick Kinect was pushed so much and also why non Kinect exclusives dried up the last 2 years of the 360 life. It's unfortunate his ideas passed over to the X1. If Phil Spencer was running the show from the get go the OG X1 would've been vastly superior.

2pacalypsenow2744d ago

Mattrick only pushed what MS wanted to push he didn't create it he was just the scapegoat. Look at Windows 8 they made it to push people to their surface and it flopped.

nix2744d ago (Edited 2744d ago )

Don was the guy sent out to speak about a product that was created by the team led by Greenburg. He probably made sure that the project saw the release.

Even with Phil, there is so much of double speak from MS. "QB is Xbox 1 exclusive. QB is coming to W10. Only few select titles are going to come to W10. All games are coming to W10."

One day Phil is saying something, next day he's forced to say something.

threefootwang2744d ago

It's funny, you and S3Killinin are practically the first two people to comment on EVERY Xbox article. Does Sony pay you for every comment or are you just bored because of a clear lack of good exclusive games on the PS4?

DigitalRaptor2744d ago (Edited 2744d ago )

1) Why are you salty about anyone bringing up good points, and recollecting the painful past?

2) Lack of good exclusive games on PS4 beats having no exclusive games (you know what I'm saying here). Except, PS4 has had more quality "exclusives" in 2016 than Xbox One, and has a better rated, more diverse lineup of games overall. Up until late September (10 months into the year) with FH3 there were no AAA retail "exclusives" to play on that box and that seems to happen most years. Time to find a different angle of criticism.

BIGBOSS082744d ago (Edited 2744d ago )

This is the main problem with Xbox. In America the gap between ps4 and xb1 is less than 2 million yet in total ps4 is over 20m ahead of xb1 worldwide. That right there tells you everything you need to know about how important worldwide appeal is. Without Europe as a whole sony would not be where they are today. Microsoft need to try and take some of that market off sony. Sony literally OWN Europe. How do you think ps3 stayed equal to 360 when it was 20m behind in North America? ? That lead was negated by the rest of the world.

4Sh0w2744d ago

Do you have a link for those numbers or are you just making things up?

Sure, when they announced all those crazy policies forced in Kinect and much higher price point they were doomed.

kneon2744d ago (Edited 2744d ago )

They were probably doomed when we found out the PS4 was launching the same year. They came in last place with the 360 despite launching between 12-24 months earlier (depending on the region), and at a lower price.

And then the insanely bad way in which they communicated their policies and features of the Xb1 just sealed their fate.

AngelicIceDiamond2744d ago

360 came in last place? I don't know if that's completely true https://en.wikipedia.org/wi... only by a million but nothing to brag about.

DigitalRaptor2744d ago (Edited 2744d ago )

@ Angelic

It's about context, not bragging.

It's a key measurable.

If you consider exactly what kneon said about Sony's position with their new console (a LOT more going on there than mentioned here), when the 360 came out. The PS3's sales performance last generation proves the nature of the PlayStation brand that side-by-side, it's almost insurmountable due to Sony's global efforts and relatively recent pacing of the most diverse lineup of games throughout a generation. With what you mentioned along with the PS brand having everything going right, launching at basically the same time as the troubled XB1, it was always going to be this way.

I mean without Sony being as strong as they are in the rest of the world, outside North America and perhaps the UK, that level of sales "catchup" with the PS3 would never have been possible. Microsoft could never come back from that.

gangsta_red2744d ago

Compared to Sony and especially Nintendo they are still the new kids on the block. But even with that they were still able to come into a dominated market and become a contender even breaking the monopoly Sony had over the gaming console industry.

pompombrum2744d ago

All things considered, I think the Xbox is in a fairly good position, after their woeful unveiling, the fact that it's sold as much as it has goes to show just how strong the brand is in certain regions.

Morgue2744d ago

Ugh.

Is this article doomed from the second it was posted on here?

Sciurus_vulgaris2744d ago

No it's clickbait, this site loves that crap.

THRASHMOUTH2744d ago

Isn't it the journalists job to create a catchy headline to grab readers attention, regardless if they agree/disagree? On N4G, everyone's excuse is "clickbait", but take a look on the cover of every Newspaper, Magazine, etc. etc. and you'll soon realize that "clickbait" has been around way before snake oil was ever sold.

gangsta_red2744d ago

It's an opinion piece that brings up so good points. Sure the title is meant to grab you and pull you in and why shouldn't it?

Morgue2744d ago (Edited 2744d ago )

The only reason I said that is because these articles appear at least once a month and have been since the X1 was originally announced. It's old hat and nothing but bait as usual to get everyone all fired up.

Do writers actually think that every person who buys a console whether it's a PlayStation or Xbox reads articles like this or for that matter even cares?

Kid at xmas " Mom!! I don't want a Xbox S didn't you know that the brand is doomed??!! "

Mom- " No I didn't know that or have any idea what you're talking about. But I can return it since I have a gift receipt "

Sm00thNinja2744d ago

Except it's not failing? Obvious troll bias

OC_MurphysLaw2744d ago

Yeah, I think this article is off the mark. My feeling is It "was" doomed to fail "if" they hadn't made the major course correction that they did. They did however make that course correction and have really erased most of the initial damage that came out on reveal. Yes they pretty much gave this generation to Sony on a silver platter with all that craziness but if this machine can out perform the 360 given its start ...I think MS will take that as a win.

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss3d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

jznrpg1d 3h ago

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

anast3d ago

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.

gold_drake2d ago

shining force.

but indont see that happening unfortunately.

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil9d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19928d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop8d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom7d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor8d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog8d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit8d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

So they eventually don't pay their workers and depend on our tips to pay them like the case with waiters!

Deeeeznuuuts8d ago

That kind of practice is only normal in the states, as far as I know anyway, what a backwards system

H98d ago

No it's as well in a every country that wants to amercanize

bloop8d ago

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum8d ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

Jin_Sakai9d ago

Is this a joke? How about the big wigs giving up some of their pay for their hard working developers.

MrBaskerville8d ago

Maybe the CEO could earn his money based on tips.

mastershredder9d ago

good god. The devs are not baristas dude. Total 1% ideals. Fing Chadosaurus.
