Nintendo NX: Why new console can battle and win against the PS4 Pro and Xbox One Scorpio

NX NEWS COMMENT: Nintendo may have gotten it spectacularly wrong with the Wii U, but one look at their recent decisions and you’ll see a company that’s once again on the up and up.

I would not say BOTW is stunning, it looks great, but common! Hopefully the NX version will look even better!

Anyway, this guy is over the top! I do not think Nintendo is really trying to compete with Sony/Microsoft, but rather establish their own markert, which with NX seems to be ease of taking it on the go rather than making it super powerful, which if it has more power than Wii U, it will be pretty cool for something portable, but I still wanted just a standard home console. Still can't wait and pre-order ASAP, whenever that will be!?!

LOL_WUT2767d ago

Let's be honest here, the NX has no chance in catching up to the PS4 and the X1. This was Nintendo's opportunity to deliver a more than capable system, but, no, they blew it.

If only the NX was a dedicated HOME CONSOLE that did handheld gaming instead the other way around. ;)

rjason122767d ago

Stop talking like you know exactly what it is, you know nothing more than the rest of us.

KaladinStormblessed2767d ago

They haven't even revealed it yet, don't talk like you already know what it is. It wouldn't be a "dedicated" home console anymore if it did portable/handheld anyway.

Errorist762767d ago

It's entirely possible they come up with such a great new idea that people will flock to it like when Wii came out.

_-EDMIX-_2767d ago

Lol well by default it has to be a portable before its ever a console based on the idea of what portable actually means.

I actually disagree with you I believe that Nintendo could move more handhelds then Sony or Microsoft and maybe their best bet is to capitalize on what they do well with mobile gaming as opposed to trying to chase a giant like Sony and Microsoft.

I believe the Wii U is showing that those days are over and their install base of gamers majority exist on handheld and mobile devices.

If Nintendo unveils a dedicated console they're never going to catch up to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One simply because the appeal of the platform will be dedicated for those that want to play on console and I just do not believe that the majority of Nintendo consumers care about that.

It's time to move on and put creating consoles dedicated to a rest and focus on mobile and handheld. The Saving Grace of their next platform will be simply being able to play the games on a TV screen while also being able to take the device on the go I believe most Nintendo fans are tired of watching press conferences were there crossing your fingers when a trailer is being shown that it's coming to a platform that they actually own, they cannot keep playing favorites against their own damn platforms. create all their content on one platform and just let consumers decide if they want to play on the damn TV screen or not.

I don't even believe Nintendo is even doing anything significant with their Hardware to even need a dedicated console at this point I believe their best bet is the permanently go handheld while giving the luxury of playing off of TV for those few that want the feature.

jznrpg2767d ago

Xbox is in a weak position imo, Nintendo can come back to overtake some marketshare. Xbox exclusive games overall are lacking and the games they do release aren't that great overall. Without Gears of War , Halo and Forza they dont have anything worthwhile and those games are stale too ,imo. Nintendo has a good chance , power isn't everything , they just need to deliver on the games side.

EddieNX 2767d ago

it says against the Pro and the Scorpio not the vanilla models that have been out 3 years...

nX2767d ago

I'm not sure I even want another handheld, it has to be a really good hybrid to convince me this time.

PloxD00d2767d ago

i'm not interest in the NX if it's not a homeconsole with a regular controller like in the snes,N64 and gamecube days.

jmc88882767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

@rjason12 and @kaladinstormblessed

They haven't revealed it yet, there are RUMORS. Sometimes rumors are right, sometimes not.

If the rumors are right, the future isn't hard to predict for the NX, and it's not bright. It could sell 10-20-40-50 even 60 million units, and that would be a disaster worse than the Wii U. This is now their handheld and console, so it better sell better than the 3DS line + the Wii U line. Success would be about 150-200 million sold. 100 million would be decent.

Remember what happened with Microsoft? All the crap was rumors. But you could accurately state... that if the rumors were true, Microsoft done screwed up and the Xbox One was going to take a massive hit because of it.

Guess what, that's exactly what happened.

It looks like the same thing is about to happen. Nintendo is basically abandoning Nintendo console users and saying we don't even want the Sony/Microsoft/PC users. They are deluding themselves thinking they can get these people by saying... look at all the handheld games you can purchase on this device to augment the little/no AAA 3rd party support and handful of console titles released every year!

Thus, you CAN speculate that IF the NX truly is a handheld about to be marketed as a console on the go (idiotic marketing btw which is also the rumor... that they are about to market this handheld with HDMI out as a CONSOLE! WTF), and has 2007-2008 power levels not that far above the top cellphones of today, and they are focusing on the people who don't buy squat, instead of Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft/PC gamers they are making a mistake.

A huge mistake.

If they truly are going to only make one device, they are going to lose money from not profiting off of some of their customers who would buy both. Because there is about what, 5-10 million Nintendo gamers last generation that owned both a Wii U and a 3DS in some form. Instead of making profit from 2 sales every generation, now it's 1.

With PS4 slim/Xbox One S/PS4 Pro/Scorpio/PC out there above them power wise and huge libraries, and cellphones barely behind them with huge freemium libraries, they picked and odd position to be in. If they price their handheld with HDMI out at the same price, or even more than PS4 Slim/Xbox One S, they are crazy. They have to be far below $299. Even $199 might not incentivize enough traditional console/PC users to bite.

That's the problem. If you don't have a place in the marketplace, and boy does this device as rumored look like it, it could be a massive fail. If their idea needs a $299 price, and the market won't support a $299 price, and it likely wouldn't if it is as rumored, then simply put, they should not even release the device. If they think as rumored this can sell at $299, $349, or even $399 they are nuts. $199 might not stimulate enough sales, but can they even launch it at that price? Now if it was $99 and they could profit off it, then maybe it can find a niche. But $199 is dubious, and $299-399 is DOA.

jmc88882767d ago

They have the worst competition, because yes they are competing with Sony, MIcrosoft, and PC... and getting their butts handed to them. No matter what Nintendo says, they are competing with them.

While on the other side they are competing against cellphones and the fact there is no additional cost to gaming on a phone because its a device you have, and the games are free/cheap. Plus you carry one device, not two, and unless it comes in pretty much the exact shape of a cellphone, it's going to be clunky and hard to carry around. Even then, who wants to have each pocket filled up with a cellphone like device? I sure and the hell don't.

Thus they are in between a rock and a hard place by design, and the red ocean likely doesn't exist. Banking on people who don't buy squat, and who massively abandoned Nintendo before as realistically the only way this handheld with an hdmi can ever be successful is a crazy bedrock to launch a system on top of. It's like building a house on top of sand.

So PC/Sony/MS/Nintendo console gamers don't have much reason to buy an NX as rumored. These people want consoles, which have a huge amount of people who pay lots of money to acquire and buy games for. But Nintendo doesn't want to try to compete here stupidly, even though they still are. AAA devs would love to have a Nintendo console to put their games on, it's just NIntendo keeps not building them a console to do that. AAA devs don't hate Nintendo. They will gladly make money on a Nintendo device, if Nintendo ever made a device that they could make money on.

Meanwhile the casual people aren't likely going to want another device to lug around, nor pay a $199-399 price tag for it, nor pay $60 a game. Or even $40.

So who exactly are they catering to? The people who normally buy both their products, but now only 1. If you don't want a Nintendo handheld game, you aren't going to buy an NX. You aren't catering to the Sony/MS/PC crowd. The casuals already have their feemium cellphone games.

If the rumors are true, and boy do I hope they aren't, who is supposed to buy this except for the usual NIntendo handheld buyers? They really aren't appealing to anyone else. Meanwhile, since it is really a handheld, it better be at the price a handheld typically is. If they are asking handheld buyers to pay console prices, that's going to turn off a lot of handheld buyers as well.

The rumors better not be true, because Nintendo has no doubt had tens of thousands of people all over the internet tell them that they have a crappy plan. If they go ahead with it, again if rumors are true, they are incompetent.

Nibbs2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

To be fair - the Tegra X2 Processor/GPU is quite impressive for what it's worth. And considering the power is assumed to be on par with an Xbox One, and considering developers are still making games for XBO and PS4 even with the newer systems coming out, I'd say if whatever Nintendo's gimmick is this time around is remotely cool, the console might do incredibly well :)

NXSwitch2767d ago

So far I've bought into 1st, 2nd, 3rd & indie parties games on Wii U & 3DS so if NX is the same horse power as Wii U or a little closer to PS4, I won't care! All I want is the power to transfer my games from home to handheld so I can beat my games much better, faster, & still stay engaged in the world of them. I've been a fan of them doing that type of idea on the SNES with SuperGameBoy if anyone remembers that so NX for the Win in my book!

wheresmymonkey2767d ago

Here's a question? Why does it have to compete with Sony and MS. There's certainly space in the market for it to just exist as it's own thing. think about how many people own a 3DS, it's just as much a successor to that as the WiiU.

So that means its technically going to be the first home console to get a full fledged Pokemon game, it'll get Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest (if it's anything like the 3ds it'll get a ton of JRPGs), and many others.

Also you've forgotten the one patent that everyone commenting on the NX always forgets. it apparently has the ability tooff load processing to other devices. SO it's entirely possible that it'll have a home console base unit that boosts its power to something greater than PS4/Xbone levels when you're at home and pushes it down to just under when you;re out and about.

Most of all though. We simple don't actually know anything for sure about the console other than, it's coming out next year and it's goit a new Zelda and Sonic coming out for it. Everything else is just hearsay at this point.

pcz2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

I agree, Nintendo don't stand a chance. They are defeated already, the fact they are so scared to even unveil the thing shows just how little confidence they have in it. It will release to no fanfare and be a failire.

The NX will be beaten by all competition as a home console, and will not do any better on the handheld market. People don't care about dedicated handheld gaming anymore. Go to your local gaming store for proof- what is in the window? I phones and tablets, not 3ds and vita.

Nintendo seem to know it's game over anyway, since they have already invested in mobile gaming which marks the beginning of them becoming a software only developer.

LOL_WUT‘s preview about NX: ;)

wonderfulmonkeyman2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

The fact that you've got 30+ agrees despite being just as ignorant about the NX as the rest of this site, shows that this site is chock full of idiots that are only running their mouths off because they WANT to see Nintendo fail.

Well two can play at that game; the NX isn't going to lose out to either the PS4 or XB1.
Its line up will be fantastic, and BOTW alone will likely out-sell 99%, if not all, of the launch games on those other two systems despite the lower initial install base, which will most likely show a faster growth rate than either of them.
The games alone will bring the true gamers over to owning an NX, but the power of the system will also be strong enough to handle any game third parties put onto the PS4 or XB1 going forward, and at that point only retards, Nintendo haters, and fanboys will stick solely to their Sony or Micro machines.

ABizzel12766d ago

@rjason12

Gamefreak already confirmed it's a hybrid console. Now whether it's more console, or more handheld we don't know, and ultimately that's going to determine just how powerful the device is, and what kind of 3rd party support Nintendo will potentially receive from western developers.

"The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a hand-held device," Ishihara said. "We will make games for the NX."

If it's a streamlined dedicated gaming tablet like a vastly better looking and performing Wii U Gamepad, then it's going to do well as a handheld if the price is right ($249 or less). And with that, performance should be around 2x as powerful as the Wii U if the rumored Tegra X2 / P1 chips are really being used.

However, if it's a console first and foremost, then the R7 360 / RX 460 would be great choices for a $249 / $299 console.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2766d ago

Oh so you see the NX capabilities? Please tell what time machine you used?

It is impossible for a home games console to create "its own market."

If it is a home games cosole, it is in that set market.

If it is a handheld it in in the handheld market battle for by Android and that other one.

The markets are already there and waiting for the console to embrace both of them.

cleft52767d ago

The Wii was a home console that created its own market. So much so, that it ended up being Nintendo's undoing in a lot of ways with the WiiU. If an idea is unique enough and can resonate strongly with enough people it can create its own market. That is one of the most basic concepts in marketing. There is no such thing as a true "fixed market" or "set market". The market is ever shifting and it is up to companies to either figure out where the market will be next, a tactic Sony and Microsoft has used. Or try to create a new market altogether. We saw this with the Sony Walkman, the Apple iPhone and iPad, and the Wii. To name a few examples. You can say those things where in a market space that already existed and you wouldnt be wrong, but the products where so unique that they essentially created their own market within a pre-existing one.

Any company that can do that, should never be underestimated. That doesnt happen by luck, it happens through strategic planning.

blawren42767d ago

There are no set markets. There are always evolving customer bases and target markets. It is simply not that simple. Do you think that Sony or MS care at all about the children's market? Nintendo has always had a wider target audience, hence a slightly different market. Maybe you are referring to the console space, however, the consoles within have nuanced and slightly different markets. Sony and MS are very similar, while Nintendo is more broad based.

never4get2763d ago

"Performance Module" could it fit GTX 1080?

PloxD00d2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

I've heard from a few sources that there's next to no western 3rd party support devs don't have any interest in developing for Nintendo NX. EA, Activision, Ubisoft to name a few. In fact EA literally turned down dev kits for it several months back. It's likely NX is going to have a very hard time convincing western development studios to want to create games on it.

This is the reason why Nintendo become so quite.
They still have no 3rd party support, which means they have no games besides Zelda.

blawren42767d ago

Already with the doom. What is the track record of your few sources. There are just as many, if not more, that contradict this. Your statement means jack. Even if true, what difference does it make? Why can't we just let things happen? Just don't buy the NX at launch, wait for the games, be patient.

deafdani2766d ago

I find it extremely hard to believe that EA would turn down dev kits for a new Nintendo console.

daynnight3652767d ago

Common the rapper will be in the new zelda?

gedden72766d ago

I agree 100%. I would love for Nintendo just to make a powerful stand alone console with all the nintendo properties and some 3rd party games. We haven't had that in 15 years. its time for Nintendo to come home. Btu at the same time, if the NX is just a portable with ps4 power or more efficient but portable with TV connection that would be dope and would buy.

SegaGamer2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

I just can't see it happening to be honest. I don't think there is anything they could do that would make me pick their system ahead of an Xbox One or PS4 now, and i'm sure that this is the case with many Xbox and Playstation gamers. I have built a solid collection on my Xbox 360 / One and PS3 / PS4 now, i just can't see anything Nintendo could do that would make me give that all up now. The only thing i would buy the NX for is their exclusives, but i'm not even sure it would be worth it. I don't think i could justify buying it just for their exclusives, i wouldn't really game on it all that much. 2 consoles is enough for me.

jznrpg2767d ago (Edited 2767d ago )

I will always buy PlayStation, but have always bought Nintendo too, even xbox until this gen, skipped xb1. Xbox is similar to PS4 but with crappier games , I would rather have the PS4, NX , and can play xbox stuff on PC if I really wanted too, ( only bought Ori so far out of all their ges that are on pc too) Xbox hasnt given me much reason to buy one, and if you are tired of shooters why would you? Nintendo needs to bring out all of their IPS and they have a great chance imo.

cleft52767d ago

I feel Sony has done a standout job of making their platform relevant no matter what their competitor does and if you own a decent PC their is no reason to bother with the X1 this generation. For me its a question of if Nintendo can make themselves relevant to people that arent Nintendo fans. They manage to convince me to buy a WiiU for Xenoblade Chronicles X and a few other titles and I am not a Nintendo person. I am a fan of amazing games and Nintendo had them. Can they do the same with the NX only on a mass scale? Well time will tell.

blawren42767d ago

If you missed the last two gens from Nintendo, then you clearly have moved on from their IPs, but you also don't really have any context to make that decision. No one is asking you to pick one or the other, that is the problem.

If exclusives aren't good enough for you, Is there really enough exclusives on PS4 or XBone to own both of those consoles?

Angeljuice2766d ago

The problem is that Nintendo doesn't even prick the consciousness of the majority of gamers.
It isn't an alternative to Xbox/PS, it is in its own niche.

BMW and Mercedes are alternatives, a Quadzilla quad bike is also a 4 wheeled form of transport but it isn't really the same thing.

DarthZoolu2766d ago

I see no reason to buy NX or PS4 because I don't care about their exclusive games. I kinda only play Western Games racers, and shooters. Plus I need the best network.

2767d ago
Fist4achin2767d ago

Let's not be so quick to judge anything just yet. Nothing has even been revealed. Only talk, rumors and speculations. It could be cool or it could bomb. Nintendo has been known to pull out a few aces once and a while. It is hard to think of them surging ahead, but that's why they pay people the big bucks to think what gamers might want/like...

blawren42767d ago

Right. Good or bad, Nintendo is good at trying something new. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

superchiller2766d ago

Lately, their attempts at "trying something new" have been embarrassingly bad. Both the Wii and Wii U were poorly designed, feature-lacking consoles ruined by gimmicks. It's doubtful that Nintendo can change their approach to gaming hardware anymore, they're too obsessed with gimmicks to try to set themselves apart.

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple1015d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref4d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde4d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19724d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville4d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21834d ago

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref4d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan4d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0073d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19724d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Zeref4d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde4d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19724d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19724d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier4d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto4d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21834d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts4d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts3d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.
