I would say that in terms of free to play games, War Thunder and Planetside 2 are the top contenders. Wish they were on Xbox too since my buds (who love tactical games) play there.

Warframe for me, lost at least 50 hours in that game, and the longer I play the less I feel there is any need to pay for something, at first it almost daunting how much resources you need for everything, but after 15/20 hours of story progression and just plain playing you'll start to do wonder with what you have gotten.

It is a standard to have Xbox live and PSN with your consoles nowadays but you don't have to turn around and spend another $60 for a free to play game. So yes it IS free if your not purchasing the game. I bet you were dropped alot as an infant.

Right. I remember playing Alex Kidd on Sega Master System many. many years ago. It was released back on Nov 1, 1986. It was made to compete against Super Mario Brothers which was released on the NES on Sept 13 1985. My cousin owned the SMS and I had the NES. So when I went over his house, I played his SMS and when he came over to mine, we played the NES. This way we got to play everything on both systems. Only bad thing about the SMS was the controller was not the greatest. Was hard to go diagonally with it. Not sure why anyone would compare free MMO type games on XB1 with an ancient Alex Kidd game from 1986. It's like Apple to Avocados.

Actually, more of them are FREE FULL games. Neverwinter Online, Mech Arena, Happy Wars, Hawken, World of Tanks, Smite, WarFrame, Frozen Free Fall, DC Universe Online etc.. are all full games. I've played all of of these. There are only a few that are episode games like Kings Quest and Life is Strange. I actually bought all those episodes in a cheap bundle many months ago. Was just easier and the games were worth the price.

Just like there isn't actually 32 unique full games they also aren't free when you must pay a online access subscription to play the majority of them which are online only.

I would consider PS+ games free for me and others with PS+ but I would never claim as quoted in the article about Xbox - "So if you’re a user of the console, access your game library immediately and try out new games without paying a single penny."

Xbox console user does not necessarily equal Xbox Live Gold user or even a console owner.

From reading this, as long as it's not an online multiplayer game, you should be able to play the FREE games without XBL Gold. So games like Doritos Crash Course, Life is Strange, Kings Quest, Pinball Arcade, Pinball FX2, Game of Thrones, Hexic HD and Tales from the Borderlands should work ok.

Except your ISP is a service which you get because you want internet access. Even if you only have your ISP to get "free games", the ISP is simply a means to an end, and in practice, there are alternatives to getting "free content" that don't involve spending money on an ISP.

The actual paywall would be the money you pay in order to be able to play said games on a particular service or product....which may or may not include one's ISP.

The "you pay for your ISP, so that's a paywall" is an old and tired argument which just tries to obfuscate what the real pay wall is to make it more palatable that you are paying a 3rd party company to use a product on their own product or service, which is free everywhere else.

Until the day you're actually required to pay for your ISP to access these games, and the day the ISP itself provides the content or access for these games through their own service, they are in no way a paywall....just a necessary part of the equation for most.

A lot of these are free to play on PS4 and PC as well. Neverwinter is decent and Killer Instinct is too but most of the rest is either incomplete(1 free episode out of 5) or not very good. But thats how a lot of free games are unfortunately, but out of 32, 3 or 4 are worth playing , IMO.

More then that is worth playing. I'd say at least 1/2 the games. I know because I've played most of them. Airmech Arena is actually very good, but just takes to long time complete a match. I don't think anyone said they couldn't be played on other platforms.

Just like I was watching the football game yesterday and saw a commercial for the Xbox OneS. They're touting "100 exclusive games" to the console. Is there that many? Are they counting episodes as well? Are they counting BC games? I feel that should have a disclaimer because between X1 and PS4 I think that the PS4 has more games so how can there be 100 exclusives? Just a thought

You can now add STAR TREK ONLINE to that list , which is now available for free on both consoles XBOX1 and PS4 . Between 'Games with Gold', 'Playstation Plus' and all the other available games for free it is a great time to be playing video games.

Xbox has been doing a good job of providing lots of free good games every month where as Playstation dropped the ball for several months now but they do make up for it with theor frequent really low game sales.

You might have misunderstood. This article isn't talking about the monthly games that come with your subscription, it's means games available right now.

This is actually a very strong area for PlayStation; it has 41 free games, compared to 32 for Xbox AND you don't need a subscription to play them, where you have to have Live with Xbox. PS+ has been a little lacklustre until recently, though, I do agree.
