The PS4 Pro Is Weaker Than Xbox Scorpio, But Has 4 Other Advantages

The PS4 Pro just might pull all the venom out of Project Scorpio.

The biggest advantage is that it's launching one year earlier

darthv722774d ago

No... the biggest advantage is the exclusive games. You can't play them any other way than with a PS4/Pro.

2cents2774d ago

I respect your opinion.

GameNameFame2774d ago

There is always something better when you wait. That is how electronics work. Anyone heard of Moores law?

It is just silly to compare two consoles releasing a year apart. Will we be comparing Xbox Scorpio with PS5? (if what that analyst says is true)

Kleptic2774d ago

Still am not sure why the rules have been changed...again...when discussing these different devices.

Xbox One was weaker than the PS4, and both of which were weaker than even typical mid range PC hardware in 2013 (albeit, mid range hardware PC were still over double the price, so the situation was acceptable)...debates about this were off limits, regardless, though...consoles were a 'thing', and PC was separate...

Ps4 Pro is over twice as powerful as the PS4, and...still weaker than what is now typical mid range PC hardware...of which has come down considerably in price...but remains more than Pro's $400 price...

Scorpio is, at this point of 2016, above mid range PC hardware, and above PS4 Pro...and is apparently directly comparable to the PS4 Pro...

and why is that? Scorpio is a windows 10 PC as far as 'xbox' games go...It's a windows 10 store device that won't allow 'the rest of PC' in, only MS certified and approved DX12 stuff...So why does it being more powerful than another console all of a sudden matter?... as it's just PC hardware with a stripped down windows OS, of which will only be stripped down to prevent things like steam from entering the equation...

it's NOT an Xbox in the traditional sense...nothing is exclusive...nothing is 'only' for it. The PS4 Pro's performance specs are no more relevant against scorpio than they are a modern gaming laptop...yes scorpio is more capable, but so are a lot of windows 10 devices...why only now are these comparisons deemed acceptable?

This article makes no sense. It claims to have 4 advantages PS4 pro has, but gives no real advantages at all.

-Releases sooner
-Lists 3rd party games
-They are similar so PS4pro wins?
-PS4 momentum still strong.

I don't see how any of these make the PS4 Pro more appealing or give it an advantage. Releasing sooner is only an advantage until the Scorpio releases, at which point it becomes a negative. I will wait and see what scorpio has to offer before making an opinion on the matter, but this list makes no sense regardless. Sounds more like marketing propaganda than anything.

BossBattle2774d ago Show
zeuanimals2774d ago

Really? Releasing sooner is what helped get the PS2 and 360 their head starts. They gain a lead in sales and people go where their friends go. The price might also drop by the time the Scorpio arrives.

Having more sales also means devs will want to work on the console due to the higher chance that people might buy their game.

ninsigma2774d ago

Releasing sooner means impulse buyers (that's me!) Will buy the pro first. It will also have a year on the market so plenty of opportunity for sales before Scorpio releases.

Third party games are going to support the new performance boost in the pro so those only interested in 3rd parties have a great console right there that out performs everything on the market for the next year.

Yes they are similar and because they are similar, releasing sooner comes back into play. Why would the majority of people pick up the Scorpio after picking up the pro over the coming year. They're similar to eachother so if many already have one, why get the other??

The ps4 momentum is still going so with a refresh, an improved model and psvr (the only way to do vr gaming on consoles for the next year), that momentum is going to see a huge surge sales for the platform.

It's all common sense really.

Utalkin2me2774d ago

@BossBattle

So the PS4 pro has no blu ray player, you say......ROFLMAO. What does it have a cartridge based games or something?

We don't really know what Scorpio's price will end up being. It's more powerful, but honestly by next year Scorpio's 6tflop GPU probably won't cost Microsoft much more than Sony is paying for their 4.2tflop this year. That's just the way it goes in the graphics hardware market.

Scorpio could be the same price or it might be a bit more, but I'd be very surprised if it goes higher that $499.

Mr_Writer852774d ago

@starchild.

Then the same applies to Sony, what they are paying now won't be the same as in a year, so they could drop the price.

If MS launch at a higher price than £359 then Sony won't need to drop the price, if the Scorpio does launch at that price Sony would be wise to drop the price of the pro.

shiva12774d ago

360 in its time had this advantage too right? After one yr pro will be underpowered

yeahokwhatever2774d ago

scorpio is already underpowered, according to the PC master race overlords.

XanderZane2774d ago

I doubt M$ cares. They are doing their own thing. People keep talking about the gap like it's the end of the world. There was a huge gap last gen as well with Wii and the other consoles. Didn't make much difference. Developers have a while 15 months to develop games for the Scorpio. I'm sure we'll see some impressive games for it at the E3 next year. Most gamers will have 4K HDR UHDTV too, so should be a lot more gamers eager for system.

343_Guilty_Spark2774d ago

4K adoption isn't going to hit until for another year from now. Scorpio is launching right when it is expected to really hit mainstream. 4K + HDR TVs should be much cheaper come Fall 2017.

feraldrgn2774d ago

+ It's launching a whole year earlier.
+ Playstation exclusives that can't be played elsewhere.
+ The Playstation 4 is 20 million ahead worldwide.

DarXyde2774d ago

I think Pro stands to gain a lot, but it really depends where consumers' minds are at.

So let's estimate that there are 40M current PS4 owners. Historically, Sony sells >100M. PS3 is an aberration because the consumer base was fractured. Not so now and it's selling faster than its best selling console so let's say at least 120M. That means there are approximately 80M gamers who haven't made the jump yet and then some because current owners will upgrade. The release of Pro is very likely to inspire some great sales.

On the other hand, since plenty of people already own PS4 with half as many owning Xbox One, it would actually make sense to invest in an Xbox so you don't miss any exclusives. Plus, it's likely to be better for multiplatform titles as well. My guess? Scorpio will do fine, but in the long run, it won't outsell PS4.

Indeed, Scorpio is notably more powerful than Pro. But that will only matter if they make constructive use of its power. Graphics of both machines will be nothing to scoff at. Both will feature VR. Both will feature 4K (I doubt native or otherwise will matter). Both will feature HDR.

It will come down to what it always does: affordability, performance, and software. Pro is $399, has some great software, and will outperform PS4 basic which already handled itself pretty well, so it'll be pretty AND fluid.

Scorpio has a semblance of chance in the west, but that's it. Even then, I don't expect it to be a frequent NPD winner.

You're right that a year's advantage works wonders. But even THAT didn't help Microsoft best Sony for an entire generation. Now that it's Sony with a year's advantage...

Ju2774d ago

It makes sense to invest in the XB1S. But to be honest, after the PS4Pro update. In addition to a PS4 ... doesn't make sense to me. But to a Pro, yes. Exclusives and multiplatform run just better there. But the XB1S can expand the UDH (ta taaa) and the rest of the XB library. Make sense to me. A bit pricey, maybe. One can trade in a PS4 and get a Pro. I expect this to happen anyhow. The PS4 market will get flooded with < $200 trade ins or used consoles. This will a be a great entry market. I was a bit tempted to get me an XB. But then I'd have to pay for Live again, and then the Pro came along. And unfortunately, Sony doesn't make this easier...after that is PSVR. UDH or VR? I rather go VR, tbh. Eve Valkire? And some more great titles there.

gamer78042774d ago

It's a double edged sword. Now Sony has 3 new devices competing in a very short timeframe

_-EDMIX-_2774d ago

Yes but I disagree I'd say the biggest Advantage is games! People don't just want PlayStation 4 Pro because it's releasing this year, I don't believe they want it merely because it's 399, I believe people want it because they're excited about the games they can play on it...

I'd say the top four advantages are
games
games
games
and probably games

starchild2774d ago

Depends on people's tastes. The vast majority of games I like to play are multiplatform games, so if I didn't already have a PC I would probably go for the console that gave me the best performance and graphics in multiplatform games.

I don't think the PS4 is overflowing with good games the way some portray it. The only two games I care about this entire year are Uncharted 4 and The Last Guardian. I was highly looking forward to playing Nioh this year, but it isn't coming out until February now. These games are enough to make me glad I have my PS4, because I have the money to afford it, but it would never make me want to do most of my gaming on my PS4.

The truth is, we're all different. We have different tastes in games, different needs, different incomes, etc.

andrewsquall2774d ago

Another advantage is that it shares its games with another version of the console that also supports cutting edge GDDR5.
Unfortunately Scorpio does not and has to share games with the console that is currently LESS than 3 times the power of PS4 Pro.

wolokowoh2774d ago

And Sony will drop the price if Scorpio is cheap.

Jmanzare2773d ago

Not every xbox game is coming to pc as well. A lot are, but not all of them. Phil said it himself.

2773d ago
Captain_Tom2773d ago

Which in turn means that the price can be much lower than the Scorpio once that finally launches.

Viryu2774d ago

Uhm... so basically the only advantage is that it releases earlier, but nothing about the Pro as a hardware at all?

Eonjay2774d ago

Certainly the idea of a console doesn't actually beat an actual console. Telling everyone they can't buy a console for a year unless it the S model (the weakest of all) is a real brain trip.

starchild2774d ago

Why is this hard to understand? Neither console is in our living rooms right now. People are comparing the announced specs, just as we've seen after past console announcements.

When Microsoft and Sony announced the Xbox 360 and PS3 and laid out the specs did people call the PS3 "vaporware" since the 360 released first and we were waiting a year for the release of the PS3? No, mostly quite the opposite. I can show you countless articles and posts where people were hyping up the PS3's superior specs. Many of them outright arguing that people should skip the 360 and wait for the more powerful PS3. Here's just one prominent example: http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

For a whole year the internet was filled with talk like that. Sony fans in particular couldn't stop taking about how much better the PS3 was.

The same thing occurred for 9 months between the announcement and launch of the PS4.

However, now that the shoe is on the other foot a lot of you seem to want to pretend Scorpio isn't coming and to bar discussion and comparisons between PS4 Pro and Scorpio.

It's fine to talk about the advantage the PS4 Pro will gain by releasing a year earlier because that's a reasonable assumption, but to act like people can't discuss the pros and cons of Scorpio just because it isn't out yet is pretty hypocritical.

Aenea2774d ago

Let's answer that question once the Scorpio is actually released because all we can do now is make a guess...

I just hope Sony's boxer won't win by default because MS's boxer come too late.
While i agree that 1 year earlier release doesn't guarantee anything, this is Sony we're talking about, currently A MARKET LEADER. Same goes for MS if they are on the same position.

Its probably the same with Scorpio having a 1 year advantage over the PS5 or whatever they decide to call it, but not being as powerful too.

343_Guilty_Spark2774d ago

PS5 will have to go up against Scorpio 2 whenever it decides to launch.

Roronoa04112774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

well considering thats the only advantage that actually matters. If we go by "eventually" the strongest console will come out.. we can also say that eventually a stronger console will come out after that as well and am I supposed to wait forever... It's more about what people want right now.

343_Guilty_Spark2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

No because to take advantage of everything you need a 4k hdtv with hdr ....prices are still relatively high, there is little 4k media, all of which should change drastically in the the next year. there is no reason to get a PS4P unless you simply can't wait for 4k to pick up more steam. Even then Sony isn't pushing the PS4P as a true 4k platform. It's simply a tease. Sony is putting the tip in. Microsoft wants to shove the whole thing in.

badz1492774d ago

Scorpio this, Scorpio that...aside from 6TF and sone sort of VR support, what else do we know about this 'saviour' Xbox? pretty much nothing!

what's next? comparison for every single multiplats from now on between the Pro and the yet to be released Scorpio? this Scorpio comparison is getting sad and pathetic!

343_Guilty_Spark2774d ago

@SniperControl

Sony's Boxer is in a ring with a quarter of the crowd in the stadium. The fight hasn't even started yet but the Sony Fighter already think he's the Champ because he's early. When his opponent comes he's going to get KTFO.

Angeljuice2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

@Guilty_Spark

You can't blame Sony's boxer for being complacent, he's been knocking out Xboxers day in, day out for years now.

*Wait for "Colin McCLOUD", he's 4 times stronger than PS4...
BANG! PS4 wins first round.

*" Danny DX", 12 fights undefeated ...(failed to turn up to fight. Some say he was there, but nobody noticed him).

*"Mister"secret sauce" X", He's gonna kick ass with his hidden third arm and magic "balance"....
PS4 laughed so hard the force of it threw the fool out of the ring (and out of the arena).

*" Tyler D. Resources" will be so efficient you won't be able to keep up...
PS4 trained hard but Tyler turned out to be no competition and was easily stopped in the 3rd round.

You see, PS4 punches above its weight, Xboxers need all the extra power the can muster as they are outclassed in skills and stamina.

r2oB2774d ago

Being a stronger fighter helps, but not if that's all you've got. He will lose to the fighter that is strong, but better skilled, more versatile, and has had more time to train. Microsoft may have the stronger console, but Sony has both quantity and quality in the bag when it comes to exclusive games (skill), they have a variety of talent working on different genres to cater to different demographics (versatility), and they will have their console out a whole year sooner utilizing an advantage in fidelity over the competition (more time to train).

It's just wishful thinking if you feel they are going to get KTFO.

Angeljuice2774d ago

How can you compare the hardware? All we know about Scorpio is "6Tflops" and people saying "beast" a lot.

DragonPaw2774d ago

That is a huge advantage. The common consumer who window shops will see that there is an enhanced PS4 available, and it will make for a cheaper Christmas present knowing the OG PS4 can be sold to cut the down the price. The idea of opening a box and having the best version of the most popular console will be enough for many.

Also, there are a great many exclusives to be excited about. It has always been a selling point in buying revised consoles, but this one will run games better than the old PS4. Being the same price many paid for the OG day one, it will seem like a great deal for people invested in the Sony brand. The Pro will deliver the best experience for Sony's exclusives and all games until the Scorpio comes out. By then, I imagine many will see that the Pro is sufficient for their needs, and 4k gaming will be an afterthought when it comes to the enhanced 1080 version of games that will greatly exceed the original PS4.

zivtheawesome2774d ago

they forgot 399$ that i could even see sony screwing with MS by decreasing it to 349 near scorpio's release. before anyone says that we don't yet know scorpio's specs, MS already called it a premium console indicating a high price.

JoeDG2774d ago

And sony calling the new one a PRO console. But I think u are right. The scorpio will be around 500 or more but with better specs for 4k gaming. 6 tf 12 gb ram 320 gbs bandwidth and a stronger cpu

zivtheawesome2774d ago

actually i feel that 12 gb ram is a bad idea. that could pontentially create a "wall" between the original xbox one and the scorpio, but i'll try not to judge before the end.

SilverDemon2774d ago

I don't remember Sony calling ps4 pro "premium" console (that word is a double edged sword)

They called it high end ps4 or something like that but not "premium"

meche3342772d ago

The pro is more powerful which is a plus. But i just can understand why people think different ram sizes, different cpu, could create a barrier. No it wont. Why? Because MS built UWP which allows the game to scale according to hardware.

343_Guilty_Spark2774d ago

The Xbox One S is a premium console. How much did that cost?

The build is better, it has built in 4k Blu-Ray, HDR, native 4K upscaling, the design is much sexier. Even the controller has superior build quality.

r2oB2774d ago

What's native 4K upscaling? That sounds interesting.

JoeDG2774d ago

I think he means the one s upscales the games to 4k and the upscaling is better what 4k tv makes normally . The signal incoming on the TV is 4k nativ.

According to Pachter, the PS4 Pro sales aren't doing very good. Maybe drop the price $50 and bundle in a game since Xbox One X is coming?

thatguyhayat2493d ago

Patcher baffles himself sometimes. Ps4 pro is doing really well

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2493d ago

Agreed. If 1 in 4 PS4's being sold is a Pro anything Pachter says about PS4 Pro sales numbers should be completely ignored.

bigmalky2493d ago

You can buy a PS4 Pro, with Horizon and Wipeout for £350 in the UK at the minute. Basically, you're getting the console for £280... I'd say that's a bargain. Why do people keep asking for another £50/$50 off when plenty of places do bundle deals with great prices?

Ju2493d ago

I have the feeling there is a price cut coming for the holidays.

LamerTamer2493d ago

They will have a hard time with X1X out.

bigmalky2493d ago

No they won't. Most parents will probably go for the cheaper option for Christmas presents. Most gamers that were waiting for a price for XoX, unless they're die hard Microsoft fans or spec junkies, will see that Sony have a cheaper option with huge exclusives coming in the new year, along with third party titles that will probably look little different to their XoX counterparts.

It's amazing how biased opinions seem to speak for the entire gaming population, instead of looking at people as beings that can, and will, use logic.

Petebloodyonion2493d ago

Most parents will go for the basic version of Ps4 or Xbox1 instead of a pro or X1X.
Most parents will ask if it's play COD, FIFA or GTA since theses are the biggest sellers on both platforms.
Most parents don't have freaking clues about the exclusives coming on Xbox or PS4 just like you probably don't have a clue about exclusive deals coming on Apple music.

It's amazing how N4G hardcore gamers seem to speak for the entire gaming population, instead of looking at people as beings that can, and will, follow the herd of COD/ GTA/ FiFA.

bigmalky2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

@Petebloodyonion

If you read my post properly, you'll see that I said parents will go for the cheaper console. I never even mentioned whether that's the upgraded models or not.

As for the games, it was in regard to gamers wanting a console, not the parents. Totally different sentence and subject.

It's amazing how people would actually look less like idiots if they actually read an entire post, before jumping on someone's comments.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2493d ago

If Sony drops the price of the Pro and it's $150 cheaper than the $500, checkerboarding beast, the only thing Sony will have a hard time doing is shipping Pro's to retailers.

bigmalky2493d ago

They don't need to drop the price. You can buy a Pro with one or two games in a package for £100 cheaper than an XoX with nothing on it's release.
