Why developers love HDR more than anything else in the PS4 Pro

Bright light, bright light

vickers5002775d ago

If only my 4k tv I bought back in November had hdr.

:(

blackblades2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

Lol what tv was it, cause I also bought a 4k last year in November from black friday. I took it back because it was a fake 4k and had annoying issues. Also bought a samsung ku7000 this year sent it back to amazon because of issues even the replacement was the same. Also it was worst then the last year's model and the ku6300 tv. I'm better off waiting for next year's models if I want a better quality tv lol.
@Matrix I would but I need a 43" which ks8000 doesn't have.
@Supernova samsung is ok they have good quality with the lowest input lag from what I seen. I was thinking of sony x800d considering its the best 43" so far but might have to pass until next year still. If imma pay good money I want it to be worth the money. Main thing comes in mind input lag at 25ms or lower, response time 15ms or lower, with picture quality, hdr, upscale in the green on rtings. LG oled is the best tvs but to expensive and all bigger tvs. That fake 4k tv I was talking about was a lg.

The-Matrix-has-you2775d ago

Look into the KS8000. Its a great tv. I love mine

hells_supernova2775d ago

After selling TV's for a living I would personally never buy a Samsung. For me LG OLED (if I could afford it) or I would go with a Sony Bravia the colours etc suited me best. Although the red in Sonys TV's was not the best at least on the settings we had in store. Unfortunately there are no great cheaper brands here in NZ otherwise I would probably have one of those all the cheaper brands here are rubbish.

Mattachu2775d ago

I looked into samsungs tvs and the best I found was the ks8000 my only issue with it is it only supports HDMI so I can't hook up my older consoles to it like my dreamcast which works great on my Sony 810c 4K screen I'm stuck between the Sony 850d or waiting for next years model

marioJP872775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

This is my paranoia when i buy a 4KTV.
3 years ago, In the buying process to decide on my TV purchase, I went through two 55" TVs, one 60" plasma TV and finally found my gaming 55" Sony 1080P TV. (4 TVs total)
I guess you have to be picky when spening a huge amount on a gaming TV ($1,600). I wanted 240 hz and 3D without minimum input lag.
I'm pretty sure i'll suffer the same fate when i get ready buy a 55" or 60" 4KTV with HDR, 240 hz and possibly 3D (I love 3D)

dumahim2775d ago

Yes, the KS8000 seems to be the best out there simply due to the latency issue with HDR. I think I'm going to wait for next years models though and wait for a deal.

vickers5002775d ago

It was a Vizio M series. Vizio M43-C1 I believe. 600 bucks. It's a pretty good looking tv, and a huge upgrade from my og 360 era 32 inch bravia (which died, and was the reason I upgraded).

Read a few reviews before purchasing and they said it was the best 4k tv for gaming at the time, due to the input lag, which I forgot, but is supposed to be really good for a 4k tv.

Only things I don't like about it are that the youtube app isn't 4k and there's no HDR, and I only found out about HDR months after buying it.

Needless to say, every time they said "HDR" at Sonys meeting, my hopefulness for the ps4 sunk more and more.

I hope the PS4 Pro will at least look better with the upscaled 4k.

1nsomniac2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

What is it with people on this site claiming to work in the TV selling business then claiming LG make the best TVs & recommend someone buy one.

You guys are like the staff you get in PC World. You know absolutely nothing about what you sell. Who in their right mind would choose to buy an LG!

Worst input lag, worst frame stuttering, worst quality control. Terrible TV's. I wouldn't recommend anyone go out & spend their hard earned money on an LG TV, ever, even if I hated them.

Malphite2775d ago

@1nsomniac: You know someone doesn't know what he is talking about when he judges the color display of a TV in a store. Those are never calibrated and are usually completely oversaturated.

darthv722774d ago

You know, I seem to recall HDR being a thing back in 2005. In fact... I still have my old PC with an ATI Radeon 9800Pro and a copy of the Lost Coast that was a tech demo of HDR for Half Life 2. Obviously it is different now in modern times but it certainly was a thing to behold back then.

andyo132774d ago

HDR is the biggest crap ever. It's slightly better dynamic range in brightness, which each new TV improves apon anyway. It used to be labeled as 10,000:1 and such. If you want true superior dynamic range you'll need to look into OLED. Otherwise the difference in HDR is really just the same as turning the backlight up and increasing the contrast on the TV you already own.

I feel your pain I got the Sony 810c it's a beautiful tv but not HDR support =[ might get a 850d or wait for next years model

blackblades2775d ago

Isn't there adapters for older consoles.

vickers5002775d ago

First world problems, lol.

Kalebninja2775d ago

Same thing man early last year I spent over 2k on a Sony 4k TV and now i hear about how amazing HDR is kms.

Erik73572775d ago

if only ps4 pro played actual 4k on it

stuna12774d ago

Let me guess, you actually believe the Xbox S does!?

mozzie2775d ago

I knew HDR was coming because I followed Microsoft news from GDC and so on. I'm glad I bought an HDR TV before the xbox one S or PS4 HDR Update was even announced.

I want to buy a Oled and LG are the only ones doing Oled now. The one with hdr cheapest one cost $1800 that's way to much for a tv. Maybe if i can get it at $1500 after tax etc maybe i may consider buying one. Been wanting to get a oled tv since forever. But i have a nice 1080p i don't really really need a new tv and then i know soon after 8k tv's will be the nee standar tv. So my over $1500 investment will worth noting after 6 year's or by the time ps5 pro maybe 8 year's from now is out I'm guessing it will do 8k upscaling. and my 4tv will be worless even if is a amazing oled huge 240hz hdr 4k nice looking tv.

medman2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

I bought an 65e6p a few months ago. Worth it. That same oled you're looking at today, if you want it, wait until they announce the new models for 2017 at CES, then wait a few months until those models start rolling out to retailers, usually that starts in April. Then you can buy that tv you're looking at now as a last year model, and it will be considerably less expensive.

P.S. I don't think 8k will see much adoption in the next ten years even....to see the difference between 1080p and 4k you have to be close to your screen/monitor. I sit 5.5 to 6 feet away from my 65 inch LG, and at that distance I see a difference. But when I move back to 8 to 9 feet away, my eyes lose the resolution difference, although HDR is clear to see from any distance. With 8k, you'll have to staple the television to your forehead to see the difference between it and 4k. I wouldn't sweat it....besides, about the only content that may appear in 8k in the near future is an event like the Olympics. Television, streaming, everything, still has to catch up to 4k.

ssj272775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

Maybe you are right. Thanks for the tip. I did find a wherehouse here in Los Angeles that sales tv at discount prices usually $300/$500 cheaper than most big chain's but they still don't have the 4k oled they have one 1080p oled i guess i will have to wait to those dates as you suggest or hope for this wherehouse to get the nee oled at a good discounted price.

DJustinUNCHAIND2775d ago

Television still has to catch up to 1080.

ssj272775d ago

Ok the chespest oled 4k hdr i find online is 2k. The 55b or 55c .. the b doesn't have 3d which is a turn off and the c is a curve tv wich is a huge turn off. But glad i did saw the last year's models at $1300 so this tvs will be around 1.300 the b I could and will buy one hopefully soon. I may even jump now at get it for 2k but not in a hurry i rather save that money and get a trip to Cancun or somwhere lol

LamerTamer2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

8K LOL. Seriously don't worry about 8k, it is just a number. As pixel sizes get smaller it is harder to see a difference unless the TV is huge and you sit real close. If you sit at a kind of normal distance the higher res you go it is diminishing returns. If you can't make out individual pixels or see SDE than going even smaller is pointless. Even the difference between 1080p and 4k is not dramatic if you sit far enough back. HDR will be much more noticeable than res.

Gardenia2775d ago

4K, HDR, low input lag, high hz. Any ideas?

ssj272775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

LED i find this one is great. lg-55-class-54-6-diag--led-216 0p-smart-4k-ultra-hd-tv-with-h i gh-dynamic-range.
You can find it at $1.000 now at some places in the U.S. probably if you wait few months or half a year save other $300. And there is a Samsung equivalent in features and price but i don't remember the model.

Or the oled b6 55 inch which is a better tv (the led is still a beast to be fair) also 4k and hdr10 is at some sites for 2k no tax free shipping. And proven $500 off in lile half a year idk if it worthy the wait. I feel like i don't want to watch tv or play games like the last guardian until i get a pro and this oled hdr 4k tv. Lucky i haven't got uncharted 4 jet and once i do it will be to enjoy it with the oled tv I'm planning on buying.

Samsung KS series like:
Samsung KS9500
samsung KS8000
samsung KS9000
other options:
Sony X930D
sony X800D
sony X850D

crazyclown2774d ago

The samsung KS8000 is your best option based on rtings.com its low input lag inside game mode includes HDR and is aroun 22MS while other tvs will be much higher. Some even go above 100ms due to the fact that when in game mode there is no HDR so you would have to be outside game mode to experience HDR. I have been doing my research and this is the best gaming 4k hdr tv with low input lag.

medman2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

I would suggest looking to the comparison Digital Foundry did...they tested several models legitimately, and to this date, it is the best breakdown of lag, HDR, 4k, quality, etc., that I have seen.....plus it gives good information overall on the state of 4k and HDR, such as it is.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

If you're not satisfied, wait till the new TV's from Samsung, LG, and the like debut in January next year....Samsung is rumored to bring something new to the table other than Quantum Dot to challenge Oled, but we shall see. No rush. Take your time.

Gardenia2774d ago

@medman

Thanks for the article link. The KS7000 is a great TV but HDR is only in movie mode which gives you 112ms input lag. These are the things I'm worried about. It might look like a good choice but it doesn't tell you the cons, especially if you are looking for good gaming TV's

I'm now a believer in HDR. As I type this I am playing the Forza Horizon 3 demo with HDR running and it's STUNNING!!! The colors are so vibrant and alive. It's indescribable. It really has to be seen to believe. I'm looking forward to the HDR update for PS4 tomorrow but I don't think any games are going to be patched day one for HDR support.

Kingdomcome2472775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

HDR isn't enabled in the FH3 demo. Mike Ybarra tweeted this already. It's still beautiful, though. I have a 55" OLED 4k/HDR tv, and about the only true HDR content that I've been able to view on it so far has been Marco Polo on Netflix. HDR will be enabled when the game launches.

BLKxSEPTEMBER2775d ago

That's not what I read . But if that's true then this game is going to be one of the best looking games I've ever seen. It's very beautiful. I need to do some more research on that because I just read a couple articles saying hdr was enabled which is why I downloaded the demo.

medman2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

Have you watched Daredevil or Jessica Jones on Netflix? I'm looking forward to 4k HDR Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders. Best yet, if your oled is an LG, Netflix supports Dolby Vision. Amazon prime has some decent 4k HDR content as well, also Dolby Vision compatible.

SCW19822775d ago

Not sure how you are doing that when the Demo does not actually have HDR lighting running.

darthv722775d ago

I dont think the demo is hdr enabled. Its an amazing game even in regular mode and that 30fps is solid and even fooled me with as quick that it moves.

BLKxSEPTEMBER2775d ago

If HDR isn't enabled then they did a fantastic job with this game. I read a few forums where people said it was enabled for the demo so I downloaded it. Oh well it's still a very beautiful game and I can't even imagine how much better it will look with HDR. I'm still in disbelief it's not enabled lol

FreddyFazbear2775d ago

HDR is excellent but people should not go to Vibrant colors. HDR gives you more detail that the naked eye cant see very well. Its my opinion that people should calibrate their TVs closer to Cinema/film standards. After all our real life environment is not vibrant in color. So as games become more real it should also simulate the colors of the real world not saturated colors. But each has a preference if they like it saturated color or dull. Im just giving a suggestion. use this site for guide if your interested http://lifehacker.com/58586...

ninsigma2775d ago

FH3 is gonna look pretty sweet when HDR is enabled.

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple1015d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref4d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde4d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19724d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville4d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21834d ago

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Profchaos4d ago

They are not trying this team is established for forward compatability the team is. It interested in preserving Xbox or 360 games.

isarai5d ago

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref4d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan4d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0074d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19725d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Einhander19725d ago

5d ago
5d ago
Zeref4d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde4d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19724d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19724d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier4d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto4d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21834d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Tacoboto4d ago

How do Sony and Nintendo feel about these discs from 2001-2013?

Don't be stupid, you know Xbox is the best at this today.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts4d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts3d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic4d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.
