ReCore Review For Xbox One - Xbox Enthusiast

"It’s fair to say that ReCore bears the burden of great expectations. Touted as one of Microsoft’s big exclusives, and with legendary Mega Man game designer Keiji Inafune at the helm, it stood to head off the fall release calendar for Microsoft with a bang." -- Xbox Enthusiast

A game for the Xbox fans that is best on PC. No doubt.

Gazondaily2780d ago

Oh but this is from Xbox Enthusiast. Of course they would......oh wait.

😅

Veneno2780d ago

That just means the game is more like a 4 or 5 and 6.5 is being nice.

brettnll2780d ago (Edited 2780d ago )

The site has no affiliation with Microsoft or Xbox so giving their games higher scores does nothing for us. We're just here to help you guys decide whether a game is worth your money.

4Sh0w2780d ago

I was really looking forward to this game, not so much now.

Takwin2780d ago

I still see people referring to Recore and others as exclusive. Only Nintendo and Sony have true exclusives, where you must purchase one of their consoles to play. I enjoy some Microsoft Games, but played or will play them all on PC.

Sciurus_vulgaris2780d ago (Edited 2780d ago )

This is a real shame. Why did Microsoft not invest more into the game, it used the crappy unity engine and obviously has a marginal budget. Some people praise Phil Spencer, but it is becoming more obvious that he really isn't investing into non heavy hitter games as much as he states.

We got a low budget Conker built with spark engine and a low budget ReCore. Spencer teases old IPs like Battletoads, Perfect Dark, and Battetech, and when they do materialize it's in an abstract manner. Rare IPs, guest characters in other games, Battetech kick starter games.

ninsigma2780d ago

Nothing wrong with unity. It's a great easy to use engine. Some awesome games have been made with it: ori and the blind forest and the up coming yooka laylee are both built on the unity engine and ori was awesome a yooka looks great too! It's a shame this one isn't getting very good praise. I'm still gonna get it at some point because I generally ignore everyone else's opinion. We'll see how gamers feel about it come tomorrow.

Sciurus_vulgaris2780d ago

Various Unity Engines games (including Ori initially ) had framerates issues. Oddworld New and Tasty had the worst framerate throttling of any game I've played this gen and PS4 version of BroForce also ran like crap. Unity games frequently have issues on consoles, even when they look undemanding graphically.

"Some people praise Phil Spencer, but it is becoming more obvious that he really isn't investing into non heavy hitter games as much as he states."

Exactly this. Spencer has somehow become some kind of poster child for gaming execs, and I think that is solely down to the lip service he pays. Problem is he rarely if ever follows up on any of that, he just says "Stay Tuned!" and that is apparently enough for some folks. Recore seems like a shining example that MS is reaching for the varied new ip that their fans & gamers have been asking for, but won't put the money & resources into them to make them truly worthwhile starts for brand new franchises. Lip service.

MS touted a DVR component for the Xbox One from the launch on many main stages w/ all eyes on them, then took a couple years to finally come out in a low key tweet and admit that the feature had been silently canceled. Lip Service.

Phil said in response to the negative feelings towards the RotTR timed exclusivity that he "wasn't a fan of timed deals" & that he is "focused on first party content & franchises I own". Announces DR4 as a timed exclusive only a year later, and seeing as how its a trend now, gotta expect this to be an annual occurence. More Lip Service.

There have obviously been some nice things happening under his stewardship, but the bottom line is that the dude seems more interested in checking off boxes (just look at the MS brass' twitter accounts after the PS Meeting that tweeted exactly that) than working to provide true quality content. Recore had a lot of potential from its reveal, and a lot of lofty ideas of being like "Metroid & Mega Man crossed w/ Zelda", but it seems apparent that Comcept & Armature weren't give the resources to achieve those goals.

Make no mistake, MS may have a small handful of new ip's being pushed, but their coffers are still fully dedicated to Halo, Forza & Gears. After QB & now Recore this year, I don't see how people still have lofty hopes for games like Scalebound. I'm willing to bet good money that it'll be yet another underwhelming new ip from MS that goes no where. They blame it on gamers for not going out & buying these games in droves, but it is ultimately on MS' skiddishness towards taking risks & funneling actual funds into these new ip's to give gamers a legitimate reason to buy them at launch.

Sciurus_vulgaris2780d ago

From the reviews I've watched, the general opinion of the game is that the gameplay of ReCore is fine, but the technical aspects are subpar (if not unacceptable). If it wasn't for the marginalized budget the game would of likely been much more technically adequate and gotten higher scores. It's to bad MS gimped the budget, forced a PC version and didn't allow for more dev time.

gangsta_red2780d ago

If I was Inafune I would go back to Capcom and beg for my job back.

Shubhendu_Singh2780d ago

When a site who is filled by people who love Xbox and are real enthusiasts about that console rates it 6.5....You know the game is really mediocre.

S2Killinit2780d ago

I dont know why people thought this was going to be good. They just saw a CGI trailer and ran with it. When they showed a glimps of actual gameplay you could tell from the way the character jumped from platform to platform, that this was nothing special.

Gamist2dot02780d ago

The CGI tactic just like Ubisoft.

LiViNgLeGaCY2780d ago

I had a feeling. This game looked mediocre from the first trailer.

I personally think there's better on gamepass then what was listed. State of decay imo is better then anything listed. Recore seemed alright for what I played on there also.

Is Recore any better to play now?

Concertoine472d ago

Yeah, especially on One X or Series X. It kinda feels like a PS2 platformer, but in a good way. I liked it.

KillBill473d ago

Odd that he specified 'Game Pass Ultimate' instead of just 'Game Pass' just so he could include a relatively weak choice comparably in 'Alice: Madness Returns' which is available with EA Play. SoD was a far better overlooked game to have listed.

Crows90472d ago (Edited 472d ago )

Dont know why they keep listing ultimate. Gamepass is the better value....but the reason I think is that ultimate includes online gwg.

MadLad472d ago

I mean, as someone who games both on PC and Xbox, Ultimate makes a whole lot of sense. There's console exclusives and PC exclusives. And, at the end of the day, EA Play is still a perk of having Ultimate. When I open Gamepass, the EA Play catalogue is sitting right there for me. It's as much part of Gamepass as any other title I'm looking at, right?

Game Pass certainly could have helped Sunset Overdrive which was underrated, imo.

"But the focus of the day is Remedy’s 2016 critically acclaimed Xbox exclusive, Quantum Break, and how Game Pass could have given it a much-needed bump."

Quantum Break received overall good reviews. Not great, but good. Critically acclaimed? Sorry, no. That's hyperbole.

"And fast-forwarding a few years, we saw what a boon Game Pass was for Gears 5. Not only did Game Pass help get the game into the hands of more Xbox and PC players, but it also helped it exceed Gears of War 4 in sales."

Gears 5 was launched on Steam day one. Gears of War 4 still isn't on Steam. I think that's important to point out if you are going to allude to reasons why one game outsold another.

darthv721132d ago

SSOD was free on GwG not too long after release. That is always fun for quick pickup and play. QB is one that I hope gets FPS boost support. It would just feel more natural being more fluid but it too is a good game. I assume it being on GP has somewhat helped it get some recognition.

CrimsonWing691132d ago

There’s no denying how good Gamepass is but I’m still foggy on how it benefits developers/publishers. Like, do they just get one lump sum of cash to put the title on Gamepass? I mean, I personally canceled my pre-order for Outriders when I saw it’s going to be on Gamepass day 1. Judging by that I’m not sure Gamepass helps with the sales of games, rather it does expose games to more players, but how much of that equates to sales down-the-road?

RavenWolfx1132d ago

I heard payment was based on number of downloads and time played in addition to a lump sum, but I am not sure on the accuracy.

demonseye1132d ago

I actually agree on this. because a lot of games will get played that people they normally wouldn't pay for. and its 10 dollars per month which is 120 dollars per year. The average game cost day one is around 70 dollars. i buy a lot more games than 2 on a yearly basis.
and well the gamepass for me just made my option ps5 pc combo. as long as they release every game on pc I don't even have a reason to buy an Xbox. so i wonder if this plan is financially smart in the long term. mind you Xbox already received money for every Xbox game sold regardless if it's Microsoft owned or not.

Revisiting Recore: Xbox One’s Lost Gem

Article on the story of Recore which includes new information on cut characters and covers its rumoured development hell. "Recore’s always been a title that’s fascinated me, as it's clearly a game that never fulfilled its potential for whatever reason.  It's filled to the brim with bugs and glitches and yet, despite that, still managed to charm many who played it. It’s the first game that I wanted"
