PlayStation Meeting confirms Microsoft has the Upper Hand

Ben from TG shares his opinion: With Microsoft having already released the Xbox One S and teasing Project Scorpio, all eyes were on PlayStation this morning as they unveiled their take on the next iteration of console gaming. Whilst there were some good things to come out of the PlayStation meeting, the overarching feeling that I was left with was that when it comes to the future of gaming, Microsoft now firmly has the upper hand.

I think it's lame how n4g has unofficially declaring the Scorpio to be better . Xbox is still irrelevant because it has no exclusives. The Pro is the only way you can play Sony exclusives on high settings. As for the Scorpio, I can do everything better on PC.

So it's really no debate on whether Scorpio or Pro is better. Plus you gotta wait hecka long for Scorpio. What the heck are you gonna play in late 2017 on Scorpio, just same old multiplats that I've been playing on max settings on PC already. People here are so casual.

OK I'm not being a dick here but they haven't shown anything.
They talk to gamers more but that's about it. So far this is what we get from them.
They believe power matters...over games. This gen all they've done is push out the same games...forza gears halo and used to be fable until they shut them down. They have only either thrown money at titles or made smaller low costing games. That trend looks to continue because they have yet to open more first party studios.

They are focused on selling windows more than xbox. Putting exclusives on pc windows store is clearly there to make a profit on software. ..sure but mainly to get more people to use windows, and windows store. They merged windows and xbox so every xbox sell counts as a windows sell this is why they have this all play thing...all are windows products. Losing exclusives to pc will sell more windows and less consoles

They are still not taking any risks. They have the most money. Something that MS has made clear and the fanboys have made clear..yet they yeald nothing in terms of creativity. They throw money at everything, tell me one thing ms has done to change gaming in a positive way.? Name one thing they have in the future....present or past that they have done. Nothin.

First of all where is the cloud and it's 10x extra power??? Where is crackdown mp? Where is dx12 extra boost? Sup with that fake display of 40%smaller? 6tf gunna run games at 4k 60?? Really...kinda like when the the xbo was announced it was advertised to run games at 1080 60fps.

They are reaction based planners. The og xbox was invented after seeing the success of ps2 in gaming so they tried to make a more powerful one...copying discs two thumb sticks 4 button face and 4 button head layout. The 360 and kinect copied the wii success and stopped almost all support of the 360 it's last 3 years in favor of that market
And now we have the scorpio which they started making after neo rumors and watching the ps4 successfully selling in a small part due to the power edge.

They still talk big and deliver small. Like I said above they touted 1080p 60fps and have like 2 AAA titles that meet that level of performance. They talked cloud computing and that's missing..they talked most exclusives and that's a non fact....they talked about bringing the games this E3 but they have only talked about 3rd party games and nixed exclusives altogether. They said the kinect and xbo were one item and the xbox couldn't run without a kinect...which was a flat out lie. This year they said it's the greatest lineup in xbox history...which features gears forza and....recore. thats some how better than last year's halo5 forza and TR. Now they have said a 6tf machine will run games at 4k 60? Yeah I'd like to see that shit. There are Pc's with more TF that struggle with 4k 60. So unless they are talking indies that also big talk.

Power:....power was an issue with the xbox because it costed more than ps4 yet the ps4 had a clear power advantage. Let's be clear here at launch it was a full 100 bucks more for an underpowered system and an unwanted camera that barley got any content. Then they got rid of it and to this day costs the same price as a more powerful ps4...the ps4 is even more powerful than the xbox s...it wasn't power the people were on xbox about it was the price.

I'm baffled. Xbox Scorpio is the next Xbox console right? Not the Xbox ONE Scorpio, the Xbox Scorpio. It's MS successor to the XBO, the PS4 Pro is nothing more than a mid upgrade similar to the Xbox 360s introduction to a hdmi port. The PS5 could come along which would be Scorpios direct competitor and be more powerful again.

Like I've said before, you can have the most powerful console ever made. But if you don't have a diverse and abundant amount of quality games, there's little to bring people over. They need more than their reign on 3 franchises (Halo, Gears, Forza) to help them actually even consider having an edge.

PS4 is three years old this November with new hardware coming out. What first party games have we seen so far? I keep hearing how Microsoft needs more games, but what has Sony done this gen? By all means please give us a list of must have exclusives by Sony's first party studios released to date that Microsoft and Xbox fans need to worry about. Driveclub resulted in Sony shutting down Evolution, The Order was enough for Sony to sever ties with Ready at Dawn as a second party developer, No Mans Sky has more stories about refunds and lies. What is left? Uncharted is awesome as always and The Last of Us was a carry over from the PS3. Killzone and Knack from launch still leaving an impression? Infamous was good. What else have we seen? MLB?

It's great that Sony has exclusives, but this idea of a huge catalog of games that make the competition tremble in fear of is non-existent. Third party games are what carry both consoles. Exclusives are what sets them apart and neither has been overwhelming this gen.

bloodborn, mlb the show, uncharted and horizon to me look to be must have games and maybe the new gran turismo. but yeah, the amount of really good must have exclusives is very few and far between. most ps4 owners use it for multiplat gaming as seen by software sales so if sony can keep the prices down they will again have that advantage.

You could make a whole bunch of racing or First Person Shooter games with ratings in the 9 or 10s, but they're all the same type of games. What I like about Playstation is variety and the willingness to take some risk in niche games. Not all of them are must have titles for everyone, but I can guarantee you that Sony always has a little something that's fits your needs.

Maybe accept that even if Sony games aren't as good on your subjective outlook on the matter, Sony has had much more success in selling the notion that they are games to get excited over much better than MS has.

That may be because they don't spend 90% of their marketing focus on their big staples, whereas MS keeps relying too heavily on the games they feel still bring excitement to the masses. Despite Sony having it's staples, which they do focus on, they still are showing new things which are getting people excited to play them. Things like Bloodborne, Horizon, NMS(despite being a disappointment), etc are games that people looked forward to or are looking forward to. That is what sells games systems....not the notion that fanboys somehow dictate what is better or relevant to the masses or individual based on their subjective reasoning.

These might not be all first party but they are exclusives. Uncharted 4, gravity rush, driveclub,mlb the show,ratchet and clank,Odin sphere,sf 5, bloodborne,tales of zestiria,star ocean 5, infamous second son, no man's sky, the order, lbp 3,until dawn with nioh,gravity rush 2 and the last guardian coming later this year. I own both systems and even before Microsoft decided to release all their exclusives on pc the ps4 had more with a better overall meta critic average. I mean the ps4 has two exclusives sitting at 90 plus on meta critic something that isn't easy to do once let alone twice in just three years on the market while x1 has yet to have one hit 90 plus and nothing in the foreseeable future will change that.

For the most part, every exclusive has lived up to my expectations. Maybe not all the way in some games, maybe not all are awesome, maybe some have rocky releases, but I have yet to be disappointed in one...even the current NMS. The only people who really seem disappointed in Sony's exclusive are those who constantly criticize them or say their games aren't very good, or can only cite a couple stand out titles....which often also get dismissed in these same kinds of comments.

What I find, is there is just more to be excited for, or look forward to in Sony's releases, because the variety is there, and most of the time, the quality is there.

you get way more utility with a PC than a console. Plus MS games ain't the only exclusives available for PC. it's like this, I definitely need a PC no matter what. I can't stand a low end PC since you can't do much with it, which is why I got a high end gaming PC. Then I want a console for my living room. Sure I would save a bit of money with the X1's play anywhere, but I'll be losing all the PS exclusives.

The first three were released 2+ years ago, QB was average to enjoyable at best, Scalebound was delayed again, CupHead is this year so you're right (my personal favorite which I will be getting), Recore was downsized to a smaller AA games as stated by MS.

So no, I would say that MS are not "actively" taking chances.

After the first couple quarters of next year, what games are you most looking forward to from MS?

Now the explanation on why I ask.

When the biggest news to come out of MS E3 presser was Scorpio, and not the reshowing of all the same games they showed the year before....now with the same release dates!!!...it becomes kind of hard to say that it's Sony that's the one in trouble, where they showed several new games that are being worked on, and actually got people excited for what's to come, even if it may be some time off. It's funny when people say, "those games are for some time later, and not for this year", then go on about how they're so excited for a console which is over a year away.

But irony is often lost on the blind, and fan boys tend to never put their contacts in.

Consider this. When MS releases all these games that people keep saying are so awesome...what then? We know what their 1st party is working on, and their 2nd party stuff we all know about. What more can they have once they run through what we've known about for 2+ years now? unless MS has tons of 2nd party stuff in the wings, X1 exclusive software is going to dry up to the proverbial "same 3 games" plus some minor 2nd party deals. Where does that leave Scorpio? A better way to play those games? A better way to play those old games months after you've probably already played them and moved on?

Do you see the fallacy in your comment? We know some of what Sony is releasing for at least the next two to three years for games. We know what MS is releasing this year, and some of next...with absolutely no sign that they have anything big in the works beyond that, and as it stands, we know another Forza is likely after that, but what are 343 and Coalition going to be able to have ready for next year or the year after that in terms of AAA titles without scrambling to get something done? Time lines don't add up....and I said this a couple years ago.

MS is so dependent on 2nd party, but they aren't getting those games sold, nor are they driving sales of their hardware with those games. More power isn't going to help them.

Of course you don't see why your statement is ridiculous, but I'd be keenly interested in your thoughts on what software MS is going to release once they run through their currently announced titles by the middle of next year, with a couple stragglers for the holidays. What do you have to look forward to beyond another yearly Forza, and some new hardware?

I believe beating the Scorpio onto the scene by a year was Sony's best option. Theres an abundance of choice on 4k and HDR tvs on the market at the moment but nothing really taking advantage of that. Sky Q is too expensive and with physical media being a declining market 4k blu ray isn't the smartest investment at the moment.
Now Sony have a 4k and HDR device on the market for a surprisingly reasonable price people mat just buy into it to see what their equipment is capable of.

With the spec of the Pro not meeting up with the Scorpio the years head start without competition is going to put Sony in a good position

Many I think missing one of the things that Sony can do that Microsoft is not..and it has to deal with PlayStation Now..think about what can you do with PlayStation Now aside from Streaming Games..than you will catch the clue.

because Sony released the PS4Pro which is by the way a larger power upgrade from the PS4 standard, than the scorpio is from the PS4Pro, in order to take the steam out of scorpio, that way Sony can wait until scorpio is past the point of changing its specs in its development, then Sony will respond with the more powerful PS5 (I would guess between 1 year to 1.5 years after scorpio) Sony has the upper hand, they won't let scorpio stay in the market for too long by itself. As soon as scorpio releases there will already be rumors of the more powerful PS5.

oh yeah. sony has a perfect track record when it comes to abandoning once they get their profit back off hardware not the main console. vita, move, camera, psp... even further back the playstation pocket...

and no ones even talking about health issues. one major thing about vr is that if you're wearing it and have full control over the camera, you're usually fine...however at any point the camera shifts out of your control theres a real high chance of immediate disorientation, dizziness and nausea.

Building a console that is still 15 months away and labelling it the most powerful in the world means little when Microsoft has so few first party games with which to enjoy the console. Scorpio will already be unable to match the very latest PC gaming rigs at the time of release and given that Microsoft has ensured that you do not need a console to enjoy XBOX gaming, Scorpio is just not essential. It may well be a super duper console, but if it lacks games that give it that boost to territory marked "can't live without", all Scorpio will be is the best console in the world we don't need.

"Way" more powerful? PS4 Pro kind of cut that by a lot a year early. It will be slightly more powerful now the way the PS4 Pro is slightly more powerful than the PS4. I'm not going to upgrade to a pro. I can't justify buying a new TV and console to replace the current versions of the same thing. However this gives Sony a years head start on a somewhat Baron market that people are eager to get into. There's already a foothold of 4k and HDR compatible devices in homes that people can't take advantage of right now.

I'll keep quiet and reserved for Scorpio. Id like to see it come out fantastic but with Microsoft s recent track record it could be just a blow of hot air.

I think sony is on the right track, microsoft is slowly making pc platform an xbox hardware, xbox exclusives will be available to windows 10, I know that not every pc gamer use windows but given the choice of being able to play exclusive windows 10 games together with other non windows exclusive pc games people will eventually upgrade to windows 10(well because gamers like games). I think sony took a hint, they did what they had to do. Xbox scorpio will just be another pc with microsoft custom hardware running on windows 10 but games will be optimized by devs for the hardware which will be its main selling point.

I've been reading the comments on here for years and it really tickles me that the extent everyone argues about stuff doesn't effect anyone. I have a launch day ps4 and it does what its supposed to do, play games. That's all it's supposed to do, ps4 pro has no uhd blu-ray, I really don't care and there's two 4k tv's in my house. They have all the apps on them that's needed for 4k movies. I thought about getting a x1s for that purpose and a couple games like gears 4 and i still haven't done that but you know what i did was preorder the pro from amazon. So what scorpio is going to be more powerful cuz at the end of the day if its as good as it supposed to be then i will get a scorpio or actually build a 4k rig, they are getting cheaper to build. Microsoft has no upper hand when i can build a pc to play the same games on the scorpio. Its good to have choices when trying to spend your hard earned money on stuff. I'll just give my ps4 away or sell it. Its a really funny to read people screaming scorpio is going to destroy ps4 or catch up to sony sales or Sony is going to put xbox division out of business. Competition is good for us, the people buying these systems and wish there were more than 3 major players in the console market so we could have more choices. My best guess is PS5 will release holiday [Xmas] 2019. That gives the system a whole year in 2020 to start with. Remember, the PS4 release November 2013. 6 Years is the perfect number for the lifespan of a system. the last generation,the ps3 and the 360, went on far too long. With a 6 year life span we can guesstimate :P a PS5 release. PS4 was released in November 2013, 3 years later on November 2016 we will be getting the PS4 Pro [which I'm guessing is ONLY 2 times stronger than the PS4] and then 3 years from then it will be November 2019, which brings me to my point that we could see PS5 in xmas 2019 or sometime within 2020.
