Rise of the Tomb Raider’s PS4 Release Was “Very Important” For Crystal Dynamics; More Info Shared

During a panel at PAX West in Seattle, Rise of the Tomb Raider Franchise Creative Director Noah Huges, Senior Designer Chad Armstrong and Designer Alisha Thayer gave more information on the upcoming Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, which will finally bring the game to PS4 on October 11th.

It might be important for Crystal (they should have thought about that a year ago) but it's not important to me anymore.
If they think I would EVER pay full price for a game that is now a year old they are delusional.
Sorry Crystal you lost a Tomb Raider fan when you sold out.

thelaughingwiseman2787d ago

Your dislike is misplaced. Crystal would have liked for a total release of the game. The company that owns them (Square Enix) wanted that deal from Microsoft. They always seem to be making games at a lost, so they thought they could cover some of that with a deal for this game.

showtimefolks2787d ago

Darrell Gallagher also served as Square Enix's head of product development and western studios, responsible for overseeing all of the publisher's output developed outside of Japan

he was the one who had favored xbox brand for almost the whole decade. and when it didn't meet the sales expectations he was forced out(but to make it look nice he resigned to move on)

MS only paid $10 million or so for the one year of exclusive period

morganfell2787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

Those games didn't make their bones on PlayStation.

Then to top it off they announce the PS4 version and boast stating it is the 20th anniversary. An anniversary made possible by PlayStation...whom you decided to screw with this latest bit. As I have stated previously, I have no issue with exclusives but in this case it was a slap to the face of the brand that really put TR on the map. It is why this exclusive is different than others. Everyone knows this situation was different and is why MS was attacked by more than just Sony supporters when the deal was announced. The PR worked out so poorly Phil Spencer had to address the situation. Imagine if the new Dead Rising had been announced as a 1 year PS4 exclusive.

Nitrowolf22787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

Anyone really interested in buying this should just wait a month or two. We are going to see so I'm discounted deals when we get closer to that launch and I guarantee you that the price is going to drop like a rock.

It was a huge mistake for Square Enix to make an exclusive one-year deal on this game. A series that kicked off on the PlayStation and Square Enix turn their backs on the fans people aren't going to forget about that and they will respond by not buying this game. I could understand if it's a newly non establish IP but Tomb Raider started its roots on PlayStation. Like the others have said imagine if Dead Rising was exclusive on Playstation 4 for a year. It's just a massive middle finger to the people that grew up with that franchise

I don't expect this to sell very well on PS4 at all

Artemidorus2787d ago

You don't speak for Crystal or Square Enix. Especially when Microsoft shook hands on the day.

UltraNova2787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

SE fu** up. They developed and released the game on 3 platforms already. A year has passed. Now it will get released on ps4. They will spend next to nothing for this release so its basically cashing in with every copy sold.

Then they ask full price...is that a thank you to all those PS fans who waited a whole year for the game?

SE's recent policies are a disgrace(chopping up games and serving them piece by piece, timed exclusivity deals) and they should be shown that we wont take this anymore.

TBH i dont care about the one year deal I really dont. I will play TR rise like I played all of them since the 1st one on playstation but when its dirt cheap and used as a you're welcome to SE's 60 dollar thank you.

Edit @abzdiine
Yes and no. You see Rise was a new sequel that is now a year old and dirt cheap on platforms already released.

Is it a 'new' game on ps4? Yes, but it is still a year old release.

And yes its not only SE who's shamelessly greedy as your RE4 remaster point demonstrates.

bouzebbal2787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

Regardless of PS got every single TR released on one of their machines, Square Enix have no choice but to release it on the highest selling console to make profit

@UltraNova
I see your point, but i think RE4 is so much worse. It's the same remaster since PS3 and they are asking for same price for it.
TR is a new game and it looks like they still didn't make profit out of it, so the full price tag is almost understandable but as you said you can just wait a few months and pick it up cheap. RE4 is digital and it should cost 5 dollars no more

II__BONE__II

i don't have a problem with anything but i do have 2 issues:

1. i don't like timed exclusives because they are only timed exclusive because one company paid money to keep it off the other console and it's gamers

2. rise of the tom raider is $9 on pc and $under $25 on xbox one(used under $20)

so why do ps4 owners get the game one year after xbox one,xbox360 and pc and have to pay full price? if square enix actually cared they should have made it $39.99

it's not gonna sell well on ps4 and square enix deserves every bit of lost sales

firelogic2787d ago

The reason is pretty clear. Rise has been on XB1 for a year so it's obvious the price would drop. Rise has never been on PS4 so it's a new game. I don't understand why you expect it to debut on PS4 for $25 or even $40. It's a brand new game for a PS4 owner. Had you owned an XB1 a year ago, you would have paid $60 for it. What's the difference now?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA2787d ago

with that logic remasters should only come with one on the disc and be $60 as well as they were on 360 and ps3, not ps4 and xbone..... just putting it out there

seanpitt232787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

@ firelogic

Your logic is way off lol let me put it in perspective for you when a game releases on any platform on that day it's new and after that it's not and this is a year old game regardless if it's just releasing on ps4 or not it's been on the market for a year.

For eg if a new film comes out on blueray for a year and then it's comes to dvd a year later is that still a new film or is it a year old even though you can now watch it on your dvd player now

badz1492787d ago

@firelogic

"Had you owned an XB1 a year ago, you would have paid $60 for it. What's the difference now?"

A year difference!

AnubisG2787d ago

So let me play the devils advocate here.

The price of The Rise of The Tomb Raider you mention is for the base game without the DLC included.

The DLC on Xbox one for RoTR will cost you $29.99 if you get the season pass. Plus the game on Xbox marketplace is still $39.99. You can also buy the 20 year Celebration edition (which the PS4 owners get for $59.99) for $69.99.

Than on steam, RoTR is $59.99, I'm looking at it right now. Plus the season pass is $29.99.

So what are you talking about?

$59.99 for a game with all it's DLC improved graphics and VR support for a mission is such a horrible deal?

I dob't think so. But don't buy it man, vote with your wallet! I will be buying it. I had enough games to keep me busy for the past year and getting that package for $60 is worth it in my eyes. But to each their own.

XanderZane2786d ago

Just get it on PC or XB1. lol!! That's what most gamers are doing.

Elimin82786d ago

"it's not gonna sell well on ps4 and square enix deserves every bit of lost sales"

I hope you are right. Hate to sound bitter but.............

Igihara2786d ago

Firelogic, deactivate.

Kryptix2786d ago (Edited 2786d ago )

@AnubisG

All games get discounted over time so the logic of, it's good that you waited a year because you get it cheaper can be applied for anything and doesn't make sense to use in this case.

Why? Because Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One has had sales. And I'm not short sighted, they can literally knock the price of the Xbox One store version to $30 a week or 2 after the PS4 version releases, making it equal to the $60 tag with the Season Pass. You can get it at Walmart for less than $30. Don't believe me?
https://www.walmart.com/ip/...

The only thing that would make the PS4 version special is the VR part, but not everyone can truly enjoy that because that means you're paying $400 extra and not everyone will have the money to get the VR headset first day.

And cause it has better graphics? Oh wow, like that's not already a given. I expect a more powerful console to have better graphics and performance with all games. And hold on, DirectX 12 is not needed to improve graphics? Whaaaat? Because it's just an API. different way to program.

Steam version being 60 dollars still? Gotta feel bad for the people that don't do the research and are falling for that price. G2A sells it for $30, no different with price comparisons.

Yea, I'm gonna be very intelligent about it and not give them a single cent so they can learn their lesson. And with all the valid points I made, I really suggest nobody else does. Don't want to see this kind of **** to another old beloved franchise.

I dont remember ps3 owners feeling all righteous about games like Oblivion, Bioshock or Mass Effect being timed exclusive for a year or more, at full price.

I also dont see xbox one owners holding grudges over the many ps4 exclusives that are now hitting the console at their original prices of release. It comes to a certain point where we need to stop being petty, and just enjoy a great game.

TripleCs2787d ago

Well the difference between Mass Effect, Bioshock and Oblivion's exclusivity deals compared to Tomb Raider's exclusivity deal was that those games were new IP's at the time so they had no history on PlayStation. Tomb Raider on the other hand does have a history on PlayStation dating back to the original games. Hell, PlayStation was one of the platforms the series started on. That is why me and other PlayStation fans that are long time fans and supporters of the series were upset about the news that it was going to be exclusive to Xbox.

Timed exclusivity is a dick practice whether Microsoft or Sony does it though, imo.

rainslacker2787d ago

I remember it quite well. Maybe you should have paid more attention.

Xbox owners would be saying the same thing PS owners are now if the situation was reversed. I don't even think it's a console war thing....except for people like yourself....it's more about the overall principal that most people seem to really hate the timed exclusive deals which exclude a pretty big portion of the market place.

Unless of course, your going to extrapolate a couple people being OK with something as part of the greater consensus....which is common...although not really accurate.

IIFloodyII2787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

@AsheXII
Didn't Bioshock 1 come free with Bioshock 2 (or maybe it was with Infinite?) for PS3 users, Mass Effect 1 came with ME2 and ME3 in a bundle for full price, and Oblivion included Shivering Isles (which is much bigger than RoTTR on it's own) and the other DLCs for free on PS3, so were easier to justify I guess. Whereas Rise has decent content included, but we'll have to wait and see if people think it's enough to justify a full price buy (I doubt it will).

Kal-V32787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

They can't. It's all about money and "you offended me" to these people. Gaming has nothing to do with games to them. Its all about how they can come off. Notice how they talk alot of BS about integrity and selling out, but you say "would you get it for $20" and they'll say "yeah, that's a deal".
Its all about the bottom line to "gamers" and they wonder why these companies treat them like walking wallets.
If you act like a consumer, you'll be treated like one.

Imalwaysright2786d ago

@ BadBoyC

If you knew about TR history you would know that Sony signed a deal with Eidos that prevented TR games from being on other consoles in the PS1 days. That is why the franchise is associated with the PS brand. Sega Saturn version of TR2 was cancelled (not delayed) due to that deal and it was the 1st console TR1 was released on. Also, the xbox brand didn't exist in those days so how could the original TR games be associated with it?

MS helped fund the Rise of TR so I don't understand why you guys are upset. SF5 was funded by Sony and it isn't even a timed exclusive. At least you guys get to play this one on your console of choice.

NeverEver2787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

I bet you get excited when a game isn't announced for Xbox One or when a game that would have been multi-platform or was multi-platform in the past gets announced as a PS4 exclusive. Money talks.

Silly gameAr2787d ago

Yeah, just ignore what he said about Tomb Raiders history and go right into strawmanning.

rainslacker2787d ago

It's important to them now because they actually need to sell the game. I can't imagine it sold well enough between X1 and PC to make up for it's development budget, or at least the expectations that Square puts on the franchise(as evidenced by their remarks about the rather good sales of the last game across all platforms being less than expected).

Great they put in all sorts of new content I guess. But to me, ROTTR on PS4 may be important to them, but it's not that important to me for a while, and even if it was my most anticipated game, I wouldn't support the practices of SE or MS by saying I'm fine just waiting a year to pay full price for a couple extra hours of new content....part of which won't even be relevant to those not shelling out $400 for a PSVR unit.

lastking952787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

Considering MS paid cash to help development your imagination is probably wrong. As long as SE gets your cash rather it's at launch for $60 or later at $40 that's all that matters to them.

rainslacker2787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

True. But consider that if there are a lot of people waiting it out for the $40 or less price mark, the chances they continue to get more cash out of it all is greatly reduced. Games that don't sell well don't get many restocks, and without those restocks, all they've made is their initial launch purchase revenue and end up having distributors discount additional stock and not order more copies.

In the end, the money they made from MS will likely make up for it, but it damages their overall perception...which isn't hard with SE....and tends to put people off of the brand. I'm sure most can understand that it's all business, but as consumers, we do like to be treated with a modicum of respect. When companies disregard their customers, they are either vocal about it, or they simply look elsewhere, and in this case, both.

C-H-E-F2787d ago

Exactly, I will be buying this game for much less and used. Crystal nor will Square get any of my monies ridiculous selling out. And I'm not just doing it to them, I do it to all games that sellout.

Kal-V32787d ago

So it's all about the money huh? ;)
And you say "sold out" like they are an indie band with artistic integrity or something.

But seriously, GOTY editions for games come out with all the dlc and extras, a year after initial release for $60 all the time, but the exact same thing happening here just debuting on PS4 with a bonus VR mode, is a problem?
I think people want to be mad just to be mad because this reasoning makes no sense.

XanderZane2786d ago (Edited 2786d ago )

I think the same thing could be said for Street Fighter V as well. I would never ever pay full price for a SFV game. The RotTR 20yr Celebration and Collector Edition will both end up on PC and XB1 as well. I wouldn't pay full price for that either. If I buy RotTR again, it'll have everything and be less then $25.

Also, it's say the dualshocker site has malicious malware on the site, so don't even bother clicking on it.

isa_scout2787d ago

Sucks it wasn't important enough to them to release it last year along with the Xbox One version. I still remember how poorly they handled it as well saying, " PS4 owners get to play the downloadable TR game". Yall didn't want my money a year ago, and you sure ain't getting it now. I'll be renting this from Gamefly. Timed exclusive games regardless of which console manufacturer is anti consumer.

showtimefolks2787d ago

on pc it's $9
on xbox one it's 24.98 or used around/under 20

but ps4 owners get the game one year after every console yet are expected to pay full price once more

i am buying it used(or or do gameafly) square enix isn't getting my money from this game

2787d ago
showtimefolks2787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

oh i am sorry i didn't realize paying $10-15 was the same as paying $60

and how many of them were sony signing a developer to say don't release this on xbox one

indie developers chose ps4 due to high install base than to port the games to xbox one

lastking952787d ago

But you get all the cool dlc. We all knew this would happen remember. Ps4 would the goty edition, in this case anniversary.

Skankinruby2787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

Yes.....I'm sure it was. We'll
see how 'important' it is when the price cuts and sales incentives get released.

rainslacker2787d ago

I'd say three weeks tops. That's how long it took for it to have official price drops on the X1. PC took a bit longer, but there were some good exploit deals out there if one were savvy enough.

But three weeks after release, in a fully loaded holiday season, this game will drop to $40....just like it did on the X1. Even if not official, stores will want to make room for the holiday stock, and passing it off as a good Black Friday deal will probably be a thing.....just like on the X1.

Jayszen2787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

What a load of crock! Talk about spin....

Imagine as the following:

"The release for PS4 was so important we decided that rather than release it when the largest fan base for the game on the Playstation was ready and willing to spend money on Day One, we would delay the release to make them wait for nearly a year longer while in the meantime, the console that has barely supported the franchise will have timed exclusivity to allow the Xboners to claim bragging rights as well as hopefully sell a few more of their console. This decision was aided by the donation of a very large cheque for a lot of money from the management of Microsoft to Square Enix.

However, rather than the success on both platforms that was hoped for, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics found that the hasty and ill-conceived decision borne out of greed has resulted in negligible sales on the favoured console resulting in the game being sold at bargain bin prices within four months and currently available for $7 on Steam. The game is also being soundly rejected by what was expected to be the biggest market for the game, the PS4 gamers after their 20 year loyalty to the franchise was rejected during Holiday 2015 when they were not allowed to also partake in the release of Rise of the Tomb Raider. It seems a year is a very long time and now the game has almost been forgotten and considered unnecessary. Just desserts."

TheColbertinator2787d ago

Its 7$ on Steam? I should gift it to a friend at this point.

NeverEver2787d ago

He must be looking at the original Tomb Raider, because RotTR is $59.99 on Steam at the moment. Just complaining for no reason.

smolinsk2787d ago

Ohh no.. not this old game again, who cares

poppinslops2787d ago

Well, there's you and everybody else on this article... not to mention the literally millions of other comments posted on this topic.

I'd have thought that was obvious...

nitus102787d ago

Note really. I am here for the popcorn 😉

I have not played a Tomb Raider game since three. I have tried and for some reason, I just can't get into the newer games and the graphics have improved considerably, maybe they are not "Tomb Raderish" enough for me anymore. Go figure, although if others like the later series I wish them all the best.

RedDevils2787d ago (Edited 2787d ago )

not care enough to buy it first day tho, maybe when it hit $9 mark.

2787d ago
DragonKnight2787d ago

Caring enough to make a comment =/= caring about the game. One could be tired of the obvious insincerity and decide to comment due to that.

poppinslops2787d ago

You guys are so transparent... he obviously cares - his comment history is full of praise for Naughty Dogs games, but he's somehow not interested in Tomb Raider? Insincerity indeed...

DragonKnight2787d ago

What kind of logic is "if you like Naughty Dog, then you have to like Tomb Raider?"

poppinslops2787d ago

The regular kind... I mean it's not as though Naughty Dog haven't been ripping off Tomb Raider since Uncharted 1.

DragonKnight2787d ago

What? Ok, so now that we've established that you don't even know what logic is, I'll remind you of 2 facts.

1. Everyone rips off of everyone. It's actually called inspiration.

2. One is completely capable of liking derivative works (even when they aren't actually derivatives), moreso than the original works or even completely dislike originals altogether. You can't make the claim that if you like one, you must then inherently like the other and if you don't then you're a liar and a hypocrite.

Even if smolinsk was actually making a fanboy comment, it's still possible to enjoy Uncharted and not Tomb Raider considering factors such as characters or story which are unique to both.

poppinslops2787d ago

Yeah, you keep telling yourself that, and I'll keep being dead on the money... enjoy the game.
