After Capcom released their Fiscal Year reports, it was revealed that Street Fighter V shipped less than 100,000 copies throughout the quarter.

Inb4 Capcom /Yoshinori Ono share their belief that the players are to blame that there won't be a Street Fighter VI.

Gazondaily2822d ago (Edited 2822d ago )

Would be pretty bad if they said that.

They should release this on Xbox. More sales would help

Hoffmann2822d ago

If they can't sell a lot copies on PS4 and PC, an Xbox port won't help a lot either.

Capcom screwed Street Fighter and those gamers that don't care about tournaments and the online competition a lot. The game is not as good as previous Street Fighter games ..its not as fun except your priorities really are just online play and practicing for tourneys.

naruga2822d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

somehow i knew that SF5 will be a failure....Capcom tried to get away with big sales and the most cheap SF ever made....unexploited U4 engine, poor visuals ,poor inspiration, poor art direction (the most important ) , poor new characters, halved content ....they deserve what is happening to them...i said it before---> look at King of fighter 14 its classes superior than SF5 because they spend some time on it.....they didnt throw just a U4 engine (the worst and cheapest option imo for Capcom) and their game lore/characters in a mixer, and whatever garbage poured out from there, tried to sell it for AAA game

2822d ago
DevilOgreFish2822d ago

I wish they already get to Marvel Vs Capcom 4. love that series.

NotoriousWhiz2822d ago

Well, let's think about it. PS4 gamers (and maybe PC as well) strongly value single player content. Without single player content, how can they possibly expect to appeal to this group of gamers? Xbox gamers (as a percentage) would probably have accepted SF5 more than Ps4 / PC gamers (though that doesn't mean it would've sold more seeing as there are at least 2x as many PS4s as X1s in consumer hands)

bloop2822d ago

@Hoffman: It's pretty bad that the only thing going for it is the online and they still haven't fixed the most glaring problem with it. I just played SFV for the first time in a long time and had about 20 matches tonight. Out of those 20 matches, 8 of them were with players that were on 15+ win streaks and yep, you guessed it, quit as soon as I was about to beat them and keep their win streak and points!! I can't believe they still haven't implemented penalties for rage quitters. How hard can it be when there was already a penalty system in SFIV?? Ranked is really the only thing worth buying/playing this game for yet the fundamental system can still be abused MONTHS after release!!

Criti-Choco2822d ago

@devil you know thats not happening due to Disney owning marvel right?

That is the primary reason why MvC3 has not had any support since then.

darthv722821d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

It certainly wouldnt have hurt if the game was on xb1. And capcom could add in cross platform play.

Sony basically paid to keep the game off xbox. And ps fans want to cry foul over timed exclusivity with rotr. This is way worse especially with what capcom delivered with sony money.

They still have a chance to break even. They could port the game to xbox using uwp and release a more complete version to save face.

@abzdine, you say that like you know for certain an xb1 version wouldnt help. Point is, there is really only killer instinct so the fighting community of xbox fans would have reason to support this unlike the ps fighting fans. On ps4 there are a few other choices.

SF4 last gen shows there would have been a market for SF5 on xbox. Capcom got paid to hurt the SF fan base.

XBgamer2821d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

Yes definitive edition on Xbox one with all the DLC and game modes for $60/£45.

Mulando2821d ago

Xbox already has Killer Instinct, which is free with one changing Character (changing every few Weeks/Month). On PS4 there was no competition so far. So there are not only less potential customers, even worse, there is competition for a not so good game.
Well but at least a port should be done really easy, but it doesn't matter with sales that low.

bouzebbal2821d ago

xbox release won't help with anything.
Many fans are holding themselves back from buying this game because it is incomplete and missing key modes.
It's a pity because gameplay is actually pretty solid.

XisThatKid2821d ago

Seriously your trying to tell me it would have made it to 200k in 3 months with X1 release?! I think not. Also is this counting pc sales too?

trooper_2821d ago

The game had too little content for $60 dollars. They should have charged $40. It has nothing to do with being exclusive.

donthate2821d ago

SFV sold poorly because it was released as a half game, and only one console cutting out at least about third of it's potential fans. You can quickly see how Sony's "exclusivity deal" hurt SFV. It forced a faster release date with an incomplete game, and on top of it, it excluded a bunch of customers.

Too bad, soo sad... for Capcom, but they sort of deserved it for making such bad decisions completely against the best for the series and their fans. So fans just responded appropriately.

Godmars2902821d ago

No. It would be typical.

2821d ago
gangsta_red2821d ago

@ bloop

"Out of those 20 matches, 8 of them were with players that were on 15+ win streaks and yep, you guessed it, quit as soon as I was about to beat them"

Yup, this is exactly what happened to me. Except out of 20 I would say 13 of those matches people rage quit on me. It got so bad that I expected the game to time out when I was close to beating a person.

This is what happens when you implement rewards for winning, people will do whatever it takes to keep winning and earn more credits.

@Eyeofsauron
The game would have definitely sold on Xbox One. Seriously, I have no idea where some people believe that it wouldn't have.

pinkcrocodile752821d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

I've played SFV on PS4 and apart from the seriously unintentional homoerotic story between Ken and Ryu it's a good game. I half expected to see a still with Ken holding a B#tt pl#g.

However the poor sales is down to the heap of sparse shite they originally released. The stills in the forced training are a slap in the face to gamer's in comparison to Mortal Kombat X.

As for releasing it on Xbox One, it's a bit late for that now that Sony have already handed over their first born to Capcom Japan. However much I love street fighter, for me Mortal Kombat will have the edge and I'm also loving Killer Instinct Season 2, as it makes me laugh.

I suppose my preference has always shown as after I'm done playing mortal kombat, I find my self saying "Sonia Weeens" Still makes me giggle.

-Foxtrot2821d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

@Hoffmann

"Capcom screwed Street Fighter and those gamers that don't care about tournaments and the online competition a lot."

Yeah exactly. Even FPS games are starting to feel like that

"Oooooo lets see if we can make this game an e-sport game"

I mean look at this

""Capcom also recently released Capcom Pro Tour-themed DLC, including 3 new costumes (retailing $6 each), new colours, new titles and a new stage (retailing at $10) that updates based on Pro Tour events, like EVO. Proceeds from DLC sales will increase the Capcom Pro Tour prize pool."

So they want US to pay for a prize pool the majority of us have no chance of being a part of....yeah ok then.

Everytime they do they focus more on the online and the core game is lacking. The last thing Capcom should have been doing is thinning themselves out like that when they had to have Sony's help to get funded.

This is only store copies. I am sure the digital copies sold made up more than half the sales on PS4. This is premature for doom and gloom. It was announced it has sold 1.5m copies in its launch month.

Kiwi662822d ago

In the article it says they shipped 1.4 million so just accept it the game just didn't do well

BlackTar1872821d ago

Kiwi shipped implies physical copies. Shipped 1.4 million but how much digital did it sell? I bought it digital

XBgamer2821d ago

So you think Digital copies would exceed 100K even with facts like digital sales only make up about 30% of sales?..you do the math on 100K+30% extra for digital!

BlackTar1872821d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

"It was announced it has sold 1.5m copies in its launch month."

You counter with
"In the article it says they shipped 1.4 million"

You see how your response wasn't necessarily on topic to the comment you were responding too? You say 1.4 million shipped as if that proves it couldn't have sold 1.5 million in launch month.

MAY 8th Capcom reported that Street Fighter 5 had sold 1.4 million copies across the PlayStation 4 and PC platforms — and that these numbers included digital downloads.

So i wonder why he got all the disagrees? He is .1 million off but what he said was pretty darn close to the stated fact by Capcom. You guys are hilarious sometimes.

Good
I hope they learn their lesson that exclusive deals don't always pay off.

TR RotTR had the same fate

badz1492822d ago

it's wasn't the exclusivity and you know that pretty well. the game was released to harsh critics because of its own bareboned nature - so little contents for a full priced game! updates were coming of course but the game itself shouldn't have been released in the state that it was!

TRoTR was the victim of its own timing. releasing the same day as FO4?! they should've released it at least 2 weeks earlier at the latest and the game would have some room to breath.

conanlifts2821d ago

It would have sold poorly yes. But if it wasn't exclusive it would likely have shifted 50% more copies. So it would have helped a bit.
Having said this Capcom should have delayed the game and released it when it was complete, this would have had the biggest impact on sales for sure.

Hoffmann2822d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

A bad game is a bad game..no matter on how many platforms it is.

edit: yes I played /bought it. ..and returned it 3 days after launch already.

legionsoup2821d ago

Have you even played it? I've been playing fighting games since Yi Ar Kung Fu in the 80s arcades, and Street Fighter V is the best playing fighter I've had the chance to enjoy. Is it missing modes and single player content? Yes. Does that make it bad? Not at all. I play it nearly an hour or more every day, and I get every game that comes out. My play time doesn't consist of a justification to "get my money's worth" since I have so much choice for gaming in my life. I simply play what is good and fun at the time, and I've been playing Street Fighter V since it launched in February.

I know you think you are cleaver with this kind of response, but have an educated, thorough reply. My bet is that you have never played it and wish it was on Xbox. Which honestly wouldn't be bad, but it's not, so live with it.

naruga2822d ago

it has nothing to do wiht exclusivity ..it was just cheaply made ...probably lazy Capcom after they got the budget from Sony , paid no money to make a quality game , as they didnt care ...Capcom has lost alot of its core talented devs and the current ones seem are not even at the slightest worth as the previous ones

Vegamyster2822d ago (Edited 2822d ago )

Tomb Raider probably would have sold better if it didn't out the same day as Fallout 4 lol, that was a huge mistake. In the case of SFV, it just lacked tons of features from the previous games, it was half baked.

MachuchalBrotha3162822d ago

Dont play that bs man....RoTR sold better than SF. Probably still is and when it releases on PS4 you can add another few hunnit thou-million...

Sparta072822d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

How do you know tomb raider sold better?
@thisgamer, wow! You're a genius /s
I've check it doesn't say how much rotr has sold. All it says that it sold better on pc then xbox. If you have nothing helpful to say then stfu.

thisgamer5032821d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

@Sparta07

This crazy thing called Google, Yahoo, Bing. Take your pick.

@Sparta07

Yeah? And SF5 sells on both PS4 and PC just like RoTR. What's your point?

ShaunCameron2822d ago

SFV being an exclusive was a blessing in disguise as Capcom didn't have to pay double in printing and licensing costs having to sell double just to turn in a profit.

KwietStorm_BLM2822d ago

If they don't always pay off, then that means they do pay off sometimes, right? So what lesson are you talking about?

Teflon022821d ago

If you could giving away the game with Every console and putting it on sale for 40 plus during christie sure. TR failed

Condemnedman2821d ago

Teflon
it didn't fail it was a great game as for Street fighter Sony can keep it..

Saijahn2821d ago

ROTTR released alongside fallout, that's what hindered its sales numbers. A buggy ugly game that has fan loyalty beyond most other games ever.

XBgamer2821d ago

Actually RoTTr sold far more in less time on Xbox and PC..but I agree with your other statement about exclusive deals being bad.

bouzebbal2821d ago

WTH are you on about? You are completely ignorant of the situation now are you?
SFV is incomplete. Exclusivity has absolutely nothing to do with this.

Christopher2821d ago

It was the rush to get this out before EVO that killed this one. They should have just pushed it up 3-4 months with all the content we expect and aimed for it to appear at the next event. Poor decision on management's part here, to be honest.

gangsta_red2822d ago

The Ryu pic is just as funny as the Ken duplicate posted on here.

SFV is the worse in the series so far, just an all around unappealing game. Bare bones, drip fed content, new characters with no cinematic specials, horrible new character designs that are uninteresting, over priced DLC, extreme grinding that only caters to the hardcore and being on one console and crapping on their 360 fans didn't help either.

"Capcom also recently released Capcom Pro Tour-themed DLC, including 3 new costumes (retailing $6 each), new colours, new titles and a new stage (retailing at $10) that updates based on Pro Tour events, like EVO. Proceeds from DLC sales will increase the Capcom Pro Tour prize pool."

This is part of the reason SFV is a bust.

Concertoine2822d ago

I think one of the big reasons it flopped was because they milked SF4 to oblivion. They were releasing updated versions of it all the way to 2014. When SF4 came out we hadn't seen a SF game in like 8 years, it had this revolutionary art style and great graphics. SF5 comes after we've been burned out on SF, and with little visual evolution like past games in the series had

gangsta_red2822d ago

Agreed, people were on pins and needles waiting for the next SF4 and the switch to 3-D graphics, full cinematic ultras and other bits really put that game over the top.

SFV came out on the heels of SFIV still being played and also due to it being out longer, IV was a complete game with a full roster. SFV felt like it had taken three steps backwards instead of forward when it was released. On top of that like you mention the graphic style was all that different which made the game look like SFIV.V

I remember the graphic style Capcom showed off in their concepts for SFV. It was dark and Tekken like, to me that would have been a great style to go with.

ShadowKnight2821d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

Mortal Kombat will always be the best fighting game this gen imo! Even though SF is a decent game I blame Capcom for lack of content in SF and not giving enough effort.

Kallisti2821d ago

Have you played Guilty Gear Xrd? That game is pretty awesome too.

jrshankill2821d ago

I think there are a lot of factors why SFV was a bust:

1. Lack of arcade / single player content on release
2. Uninspired art direction
3. Poor faith in Capcom ("There will only be 1 version of SFV"... like we haven't heard that before)
4. Didn't look like much of an upgrade from SFIV
5. Tailored to competeitive / pro players.
6. No "selling point" characters. Heavy promoion of Charlie Nash.. who cares?
7. Poor redisgns of characters (Nash, Ken, Vega, Bison)
8. MKX and KI already on the market, absolutely killing it

Yi-Long2822d ago

Every time I start thinking about getting it, Capcom will turn around and do something stupid again with it. The self-censorship, the lacking of modes, the ridiculously overpriced recent DLC (25 bucks(!!!) for a new stage and a few new costumes/colours I believe...), etc etc.

I'll be looking at the alternatives (Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, etc) before I consider buying it.

gangsta_red2822d ago

King of Fighters will be releasing next month. It may not be a looker, but 50 characters, single and multi player and story mode, it's what SFV should have been.

Yi-Long2822d ago

Played the demo and like the gameplay. Didn't mind the graphics (OK, not great, but still colourful and fluid).

Only slight problem I had with it is that when I changed the language settings to Japanese, it changed everything to Japanese, so voices AND written text. I want the voices to be Japanese but the menu-texts to be in English. That was my only gripe.

theshredded2821d ago (Edited 2821d ago )

I played KOFIV and anyone thinking that'll top sfv is dead wrong. Getting to do most specials feels akward and rather impossible . Having no simple combos other than the lp combo or special ones is going to piss off a lot of people and the characters aren't fleshed out it's clearly quantity>quality here. Negatives aside, I like that you not only button mash but move and dodge in the game more than other games but molesting the d-pad in order to do specials is too much for me and people who don't play fighting games. And can these Japanese fighting games get rid of the hp lp...and replace them with simple buttons? I'm glad I played DOA5 or I'd be lost. I played the demo for hrs and can easily beat 4 starred opponents with Iori. the fighters are wacky and the gfx are okay. At first I was surprised by the gfx in the training between Iori and the other fighter but after playing versus you can clearly tell that the others aren't on par. Tekken 7 so far is the saving grace for this generation.

Yui_Suzumiya2822d ago (Edited 2822d ago )

Like gangsta said, new KOF is coming and it'll knock the hell out of this..

superchiller2822d ago

NotoriousWhiz2822d ago

honestly even with sfv being barebones the gameply shits all over kof. played that demo a lot and from a competitive gamers perspective it doesnt compare.

@ theshred

I played KoF at Evo this year, and it's what SF5 should have been; giant roster, balanced game play, and an actual sense of accomplishment when you complete a match. Don't just judge the game based off the demo from the PSN store.

SF 5 only has recognition because of the name, not because it's a good fighter. If I had it my way I'd go back to Alpha 3, 3 3rd Strike, and Hyper SF2, leave 4 and 5 alone.

Yui_Suzumiya2822d ago

Holy hell that's awful!!!! That's barely a speck of sand in the Sahara. Is this retail and digital combined?!

Majin-vegeta2822d ago

You can only ship retail not digital...

Yui_Suzumiya2821d ago

My bad.. I was tired when I wrote that, lol

Christopher2821d ago

Tell that to Diablo 3. They shipped digital when all that was on the disc was a small MB installer to download the game ;)

Street Fighter 5: Analysing a Tarnished Legacy

Street Fighter 5 launched in 2016, and is widely considered a misstep for the hugely popular franchise. This article explains why that is.

Terry_B111d ago

Every Street Fighter is called a misstep of the series since Street Fighter III..and even the Alpha games were not liked by everyone.

SF V had a miserable start but later it did a lot things actually better than SFIV and SF6.

SF6 is the first SF since SFII Turbo for that I did not buy at launch. And today, around 6 months after its launch I still have no motivation to buy it.

kevco33110d ago

I've had every Street Fighter on launch since SFII on the SNES. SFV is definitely my least played of them all.

SF6 is very good. You should give it a second look.

Terry_B110d ago

Maybe in 2-3 years when there is a version that has characters I care for.

So far there is not one of the new characters I like..and my favourite 4 are not a part of it either. (Bison, Balrog, Sagat and Vega) + the whole hip hop style and the crappy music turned me totally off.

Looking forward a lot to Tekken 8.

Sano24110d ago

SF4 vanilla was loved by most and and not considered a misstep. It wasn't until they went revision crazy that people started turning on Capcom.

Terry_B110d ago

Don't remember the criticques it got for the big hands and feet, the sometimes weird looking faces, the lame boss (Seth) and that so many characters were shotos and yup..the many new versions. Just every SF got its haters no matter how good it was.

Nerdmaster109d ago

It was criticized for the first trailers having an interesting art style with those ink splashes, but the real game had none of that and people felt cheated. And Capcom decided to add some of those effects in the game later because of the backlash. But I don't remember any other big complaints about it.

EvertonFC110d ago

I grew out of fighting games, loved them as a kid but online you just get your ass kicked over and over leaving just the bare bones single player and also having no friends anymore who like fighting games either just makes me not want to buy or play them anymore.

CrimsonWing69110d ago

I dunno, I like Street Fighter 5 quite a bit. 🤷‍♂️

Shiro173109d ago

Street Fighter Documentary Fights its Way to Blu-Ray

Street Fighter documentary 'Here Comes a New Challenger' is now available for all, following a successful crowd funding campaign.
