Microsoft warns you if you play your Xbox One too much

"You’ve been playing for a while now, why don’t you take a break?” If you own a Nintendo 3DS, then you’ve no doubt had to put up with this notification every 30-60 minutes while playing the handheld. It’s a rather intrusive pop up that cannot be turned off for many titles. So far, this sort of notification has been relegated to Nintendo’s system, but it seems that Microsoft will be implementing something similar with the Xbox One.

Depends on the game. For example, in the Gran Turismo 24 hour events, I normally race 4 hours straight with no breaks. Or if it's an intense story driven game then I don't take a break unless it's in between chapters.

As far as I can tell, considering how popular gaming is now, gamers are "normal" as the majority people alive today (excluding third world countries) now play games of some sort, be it console, mobile, or PC. Just sayin.

I'm in the preview program and played Elder Scrolls Online last night for about 5 hours and didn't see anything.

I think there was a new update ready when I logged off for the night, though, so I guess we'll see what happens tonight.

I am on the preview program as well and played 6 hours of Ark a did not see any notifications. There was an new update pushed to early preview members the other day. This may be a feature they put in for testing, could be for parental control, etc. No one knows if this is planned for definite implementation, what purposes, if you can disable it. Calm down people.

I played a bunch last night again and still didn't get a warning.

I looked all over in the settings and couldn't find anything, either.

I wonder if they could use set this notification to work with Kinect, to see if you are actually getting up and moving around? Because I might have played ESO for hours on end but I wasn't sitting in one place not moving the whole time.

That would actually be kinda cool, at least it wouldn't be warning the people that are staying semi-active.

Because some people ignore every place this is mentioned elsewhere, then complain to these companies that something bad has happened to them due to their own ignorance. Next we'll get notices to turn on some lights while playing to reduce eye strain.

This is for the people who don't use common sense, or are misinformed. IMO, this should be an option to turn off, because if someone game's regularly, they will know their limits, and if they don't, that's their fault, not MS. It shouldn't be the burden of the entire user base to have to deal with other people's ignorance or lack of personal discipline.

Stupid people can't talk and hold a phone in a car without crashing, can't walk and use their phones at the same time without walking off a cliff or into the streets, ignore the waver they sign every time they activate auto pilot in a Tesla and end up killing themselves....

I find this to be a really good thing. Time flies when you're having fun... Having a small notification just inform you is welcomed.

This is no more intrusive then freaking achievement pop-ups

A large box that takes up approximately 1/6th of the screen while your playing a game, and actively requires you to engage with said box to remove it, seems like a rather intrusive pop up to me.

Plus, one can turn off achievement announcements should they wish to, making it an opt in feature.

Some day you can be sure that there is going to be "state mandated breaks when playing video games". And you will be unable to play any games on your system for a set period of time (let's say 30 minuets).

Sounds crazy now, but the way things are going with governments having more and more control over their citizens, this is going to be a reality. Probably sooner rather than later unfortunately. Especially with the popularity of VR on the rise, you can bet some liberal politicians somewhere are already cooking something up. It's pretty much the liberal/progressive motto, if people are really enjoying something, they will find a way to regulate it.

Nothing more than ticking another Health and Safety regulation that the EU has probably started to enforce or is going to. You can be sure that if this is something that is being quietly brought in via a new law or regulation, that Sony will also follow suit.
It is totally pointless and just treats everyone like they are in a nanny state, but if they don't implement this feature they could face massive fines.

Omg guys! Stop making such a fuss! It's not force turning off your console! It's just a bloody notification! It's not going to damage your play experience in ANY way. I mean hell, you can even DISABLE the thing ...
However, it is a little ridiculous. I mean if you're on a 48 hour gaming marathon, a pesky notification ain't likely to make you stop. Mind you, it's VERY easy to lose track of time while gaming so if it makes me look at the clock I'd personally find it quite useful too ...

Also, it is a little naive to deny that many people are addicted to gaming and do do it 24/7. Obviously this notification won't get people to stop, but it will give Microsoft the ability to say 'Hey look, we don't encourage that ...' if there's ever some freak case when somebody dies of starvation or water depravation while on a marathon (yeah, apparently it's happened). It's useful in the case of a lawsuit being filed against them. Whatever the case, I really don't get what the problem is here, and I really don't see who really cares ...
