Nintendo [Stock] is Now Worth More than Sony

Nintendo’s stock price has surpassed 30,000 yen, putting the company’s market capitalization at double what it was just a week ago. Nintendo is now worth more than $40 billion, which is higher than its Japanese competitor Sony. This stock value is also the highest it has been in six years, presumably thanks to the launch of Pokemon Go.

Two things will happen, I think. One it will go to new heights of popularity and continue for the long term.
Two, stagnation and fatigue due to oversaturating exposure and it being everywhere.
Could be something in between, though.

I'm exciting to see where this goes and for NIntendo being more valuable than Sony because of a game that's popular? That won't teach Nintendo how to compete and I thought we would see Nintendo really work hard to compete and shed their arrogance.

I hope with the new CEO we see them shed that arrogance and work to compete rather than rely on a single ip to coast on and remain in their cloud in the sky.

lastly, I don't care who is worth the most as a gaming company or corporation in general, if I did, I'd be on team Microsoft for sure. But that doesn't matter. Sony is going to keep doing what they do as the other two will.

You mean one brand, the idea has been done before. Niantic had a previous game that is very similar. Then there are other old AR games like Invisimals that came out on the PSP. I even wrote one for phones about a dozen years ago that had you hunting ghosts.

The only reason this is popular is that they were able to make it Pokemon themed.

He was right but I've been saying that on this site for a very very very very long time now.

I did not care for their current management and I did not feel that this company made sense 4 Hardware especially console I still think they could probably manage with their handhelds, I believe it's going to be just as hard as it was with the 3DS the market is just very mobile right now and they're going to have a very difficult trying penetrating the market..

They cannot keep wasting the potential possibilities with their intellectual properties on expensive, Limited Hardware

They need to seek a larger install base and it is very clear they do not have the know-how to create Hardware that is going to Garner a solid, stable, healthy 100 million

There's only one console series that has been able to do this on average since its existence and that's the PlayStation.

With 12 million Wii U sold it's very clear they cannot continue this way they need to seek a larger install base to sell their games because the Wii U is clearly not moving 36 million copies of Mario Kart like the we did so basically why should they abandon this extremely large install base of potential users just to continue to make Hardware?

So spend more money to get less Gamers to make less money overall?

The only people that could do that are those that consistently maintained a huge install base to guarantee those sales in the only company that has an average of around 90 plus million is Sony with the PlayStation.

Michael pachter is merely saying what any business person is simply going to say , drop the debt with the hardware, software makes more money , become a software company and simply go after the largest installed bases. not only are you cutting costs from R&D development ,manufacturing and marketing you're basically increasing profit by an absolutely ridiculous extent for god sakes look at how much one single mobile game just made for Nintendo imagine if they 100-percent owned that Pokemon team? Imagine if they put their other titles on Mobile and other platforms? Do people not fully understand the possibilities for this company if they simply just become a publisher? I'd rather see Nintendo spend a billion dollars on a bunch of games then on a deep marketing campaign for a failed platform.

The money they are spending on those failed platforms is also money that could have been used to just make games...

But what is worth? In this case what they mean is that the stock value is higher than that of Sony's. If however you look at the total amount of assets both companies possess (you know, money in the bank and anything of value they could sell off) then the difference is quite big with Nintendo around $11 billion and Sony around $148 billion. Sony can buy their own stock 3 times over if they sell off their assets...

(as an aside MS total assets is $181 billion even tho their stock is worth more... which I always find funny since people keep thinking MS can buy Sony easily but those stocks are held by investors and other companies, not MS themselves so in order to buy Sony stock they would need to use their assets)

which is a natural defense against any company trying for a hostile take over..lol, no company really would want to take on that much overhead debt and overhead physical assets that they than have to account for in Tax's, operating expenses..etc.

and just 3 years ago it was even larger than that...also with Sony's physical assets total over 148+ billion remember 1 single building sold for over 1.1 billion. not to mention the fabrication plants in asia, china, japan

again, market cap and networth does not tell you the whole story in brass tax terms what a company is actually worth..

many people seem to think it does, but you cannot just ignore the overhead, the compnies physical assets, the value of Patents, its Holdings...to think otherwise is just unrealistic.

its easy to try to frame the argument in to a tight little package, when you want to steer the argument in a way that seems cut and dry..but in the case of companys that large..its never ever that simple..

when you can sell a single building for 1.1 billion, and than turn right around and purchase a large building in silicon valley..things are not so dire as many on here seem to think it is, when companies are that large..again perception of value on stock market vs what actual physical assets a company has is worth are two very distinctive values.

exactly, many things go into valuation..for example Dan Loeb wanted Sony put up 20% of its entertainment stock upfor public buy in..Sony told him No..even though it would have made for much higher stock price.Sony did so for good reason..Sony is keeping Playstation as private held asset, reason being sony and crazy ken created it back in 1993 for 3 million! fast forward to 2010

sony's playstation LLC has generated over 50 Billion @ retail for Sony! what do you think the valuation of such a asset is worth..being built for 3 million, but in generated over 50 billion for the compny in 17 years....way more than 3 million that is for sure..lol

I'm actually not surprised at this. We've been hearing for a while now that Nintendo was profitable, even in its current position with the Wii U. It's also pretty common knowledge that Sony isn't doing well in any of its ventures besides the PS brand. There have been rumors for quite a while that Sony may even be interested in selling of its TV division.

007 Spectre made near a billion last year not even counting home video. Spider-man just popped up in the MCU via billion dollar Civil War with Homecoming filming as we speak for next year. Ghostbusters made over $60 mil' WW this weekend in spite and despite itself. Shallows is at $60 mil' against a $17 mil' budget, Angry Birds movie is at almost $350 mil' against a $73 mil' budget. Kinda paints a different picture.

Umm, cuz that's not what comedies generally open to? It's more than Central Intelligence, Ride Along 2 and Brothers Grimsby did this year, or the first two GB movies' openings. It's a solid opening (quote CNN Money). Especially for something that's supposed to be hated.

Spectre was a flop critically and commercially (it definitely wasn't Skyfall material), Spider-Man joined the MCU and is once again rebooted because the last two from Sony flopped. Ghostbusters is also on track to being not only a flop but being critically panned, Life of Pets outperformed Ghostbusters. Add in Pixels and other past Adam Sandler movies and you can paint other pictures also.

Sony pictures haven't had a real hit in some time.

Pokemon spin-off rarely make as much money as a main line Pokemon game. See Pokemon Rumble series or Pokemon Shuffle an forgotten app that never took off to begin with. Just having the name Pokemon isn't an instant seller. Pokemon Go is an exception to the rule.

Yeah it sucks. I'm hoping for NX to break that mold. However for Nintendo it's how they can still make a profit off abysmal sales like WiiU. A wii was a repackaged GameCube with motion controls and they were able to keep price cheap and still make profit.
Good for Nintendo but they really need to make NX a little more traditional enough so that 3rd parties can also run games on it as well. If not it'll be WiiU all over again. While Nintendo makes good games they just take their sweet ass time, and if you have no 3rd parties to fill in the gaps between 1st party launches people will stay with consoles with steady stream of games regardless.

Nintendo, in addition to having partial ownership are trademark owners of the Pokemon logo, and Pokémon character names.
And Iwata himself was partly responsible for the concept of the Pokemon Go game (with Tsunekazu Ishihara, as a april fools joke, haha).

The Pokemon Company is owned by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures Inc.
Nintendo did develop several different Pokémon games like Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Stadium 2 and Nintendo handles the publishing aspect & marketing duties.
Nintendo holds a 32% interest in the Pokemon Company AND Nintendo has a stake in Creatures Inc.

In 6 months, Pokemon Go will have released in 200 countries versus the few it has so far. NES Classic Mini will be in stores. NX will be revealed with a March 2017 release date. 3 years from now Nintendo NX would have most likely already outsold Wii U. If Wii U is the console that's out now and Nintendo stock is this high, will it be lower when NX is out? I think not.

Nintendo's mobile games will be an even stronger library in 3 years. Anyone can see that.

Technically Mario is a more popular brand than pokemon and is the only IP they have that outsells pokemon overall. Pokemon Go obviously is shifting those numbers, but we also haven't seen Mario on mobile yet.

Exactly why Nintendo the NX generation is more than likely going to be the last round of Nintendo hardware.

Their franchises are worth gold, their hardware as of late absolutely not, except maybe handhelds, but there's no need for a handheld (especially Nintendo's) when cell phones are everywhere, with vastly superior hardware, dedicated controllers / controller cases, and with their owners ALL THE TIME.

Nintendo simply needs to make mobile games, and sell mobile peripherals like a controller attachment, and they would make a killing in the mobile world.

There simply doesn't need to be 3 console manufactures.

Microsoft has gone PConsole as I said they should years ago (which plenty of fanboys argued against, now love it). PC is a large and growing market worth billions (the biggest issue is getting people to use MS Store over Steam).

Sony will likely stay traditional console with a Stream to any device service (which is fine considering PS has worldwide appeal). Console gaming is a large market with around 200m consoles sold, worth billions.

And, Nintendo needs to either go handheld or mobile (Mobile would be a killing for them). Mobile gaming is absolutely huge with probably a billion potential mobile devices, with a gaming culture worth billions.

This is the best way to make all 3 platform holders dominate a gaming market and make even more billions, instead of fighting for the same scraps every new generation.

Congrats Nintendo, while I'm not a fan of the game it has definitely been that Wii-like hit they've been looking for.

People are forgetting the stock market isn't real anymore, it's the plaything of HFT's which boost or crash a stock on anything, and central bank buying.

Plus you have to factor in the value of the currency.

This isn't about Sony, Nintendo, or Pokemon Go, it's about worldwide fraud. Stocks are in the biggest bubble in history.

Thus while it is understandable that with the Pokemon Go craze, the HFT, central bank buying, and other momentum chasers would push the stock up... it really is just bubble momentum.

Meanwhile the yen is about 20 percent stronger than this time last year despite Abenomics.

Thus when the markets are fake, drawing assumptions upon one stock or another is basically useless.

This will be short lived. I honestly do not trust nintendo one bit, especially after the wii. Yes it sold lots, but nothing over the years of owning it interested me, besides Zelda. Sadly I hoped better games would come. Then they rode that success train with the WiiU and that ended up a complete failure.

It's embarrassing that one game as simple as Pokemon Go can have these kinds of effects. Nintendo has been producing golden games on their handhelds this whole time, vastly better than this pos.
