Red Dead Redemption's Success On XB1 Is Another Knock Against PS4's Lack of Backwards Compatibility

For a company that started this generation as vehemently anti consumer as Microsoft with the Xbox One, they are sure doing a whole lot of things the right way right now, things that are definitively in the ‘pro customer’ camp.

Inside and The Banner Saga 2 are pretty great, but yeah - we're currently right in the middle of the yearly 'drought' on all platforms, not just Xbox... 'Below' and 'Cuphead' are supposedly due out soon, but the only solid looking upcoming games with actual release dates are No Man's Sky and Deus Ex, neither of which will release until august.

Which is precisely why Red Dead's backwards-compatibility is doing so well... that, and it's one of the best games ever made.

Especially a poor argument when backwards compatibility is not a replacement for new games, it is an addition. People aren't playing last gen games because they have nothing else to play, they are playing because they like the games and already own them. Many times actually it is nice for those who can't afford new games, but have a lot of old ones, or even a few old ones that they like.

You're so right! I mean, MS makes me feel horrible by forcing me into a free service full of the best and most loved games of last generation by giving away two BC titles a month. I wish they had an overpriced streaming service, missing major features of the retail releases so I could make the choice to play them of my own accord. Remasters to repurchase would also be a great alternative to a free service that let's me play the games I own already, or get cheap from Gamestop preowned. Yeah exactly why I've not bought one... yet!! I will at some point but if I wanted to be nailing 360 games and nothing wrong with that there were some great games but I'd just get my 360 out of its box again I wouldn't go and buy a new system just to play the games from last gen I can already do that. Give me a console that I can already play games not on elsewhere. As its stands majority of stuff is better played elsewhere.
Inside looks pretty cool but a system seller? Sure it'll get a port like limbo at some point also.
Sunset overdrive and Quantum break are a couple I'm interested in got halo collection and rare replay, tomb raider I'll get on ps4 other than that Xbox really isn't doing it for me this gen but always check out all consoles just wasn't willing to go day one on Xbox or even year 1.
I'll grab an Xbox one S nail it for a few months and make a decision in new year once nailed those select amount of games as to wether it's worth me keeping it, a new yearly gears/halo/halo wars/forza/F-Horizon FIFA cod etc ain't gonna do it for me, let rare make a banjo 3 or something that resembles a proper game they can clearly do it rare replay is filled with them. Microsoft just suck on the games front 3rd party deals etc fine but there games line up is average at best this gen they haven't got all the big 3rd party exclusives this gen and it's hurting them hard.

They had exclusives every month up until may and they begin again in August with the only "drought" months being June and July.

Where were Sony's exclusives last holiday season? Oh that's right....all they had were advertising rights to Black Ops 3, Star Wars Battlefront, and they had the Uncharted Remastered Trilogy. You people haven't got a clue!

This year so far, PlayStation has had Uncharted 4 and a Ratchet & Clank remake. And since we can't call games that also release on PC 'exclusives', then I guess Street Fighter 5 and The Witness don't really count, and lets not forget that No Man's Sky is also being released on PC, so that doesn't really count either.

Xbox does have exclusives. If you're the typical consumer gamer (majority) and you just enjoy playing games and consoles is the only convenient item you won't be playing any Xbox exclusives. At least that's how Microsoft sees it and has some relevancy to it.

Sony can only wish to increase their capacity for consumers without producing limited margin hardware just for it's customers to purchase it's exclusives. Considering this I have no doubt Microsoft going heavy on digital distribution we'll see more exclusives and new IPs than Sony will ever come close to.

Industry is maturing into the midlife cycle and there is a ton to be announced. Gamescom is around the corner, we might be revealed more.

So weird to me that people don't appreciate old games anymore. I own a pc that's more powerful than both my PS4 and my XB1 combined and I'll still play the original doom, wolfenstein, turok and many old games on it all the time. Exclusives are not the only games you can play on these consoles. Thats just a console war argument people use to act smug and elite to other gamers. Real gamers play games old, new, exclusive or not.

Regardless all the people in the comments are moving the goal post to make a consumer friendly practice look bad. A practice that people touted was worthless but now it's apparent that people like it and it's making money off 6 yr old games.

The fact is there are too many new games out and coming, many of them real 100% Sony exclusives for me to worry about a game I beat years ago and still plays fine on my PS3. Maybe my house is bigger than I think since I still have room for a last gen console. And the current load of games I am playing is pre PSVR. That is really going to add to the pile.

Sony is now hitting their stride in game production for the PS4. True, real exclusive titles for the PS4 that run the gamut from smaller fun titles, to VR, to gigantic platform selling exclusives and no laughable jabs about a very few months last year when Sony brought major blockbusters to the table can make up for the fact the Xbox has had almost no exclusive titles this year - you know in the present. And now thanks to their brilliant insight and unequaled marketing strategy they will never have another exclusive first party title.

Lots of salt is flowing due to BC, but that is a testament to great software design and great engineers that understands software. That is why you are seeing a consistent flow of new features monthly, and massive updates.

BC is a very nice convenience. I personaly dont just play new games. I play old games and being able to minimize the connect / disconnect of multiple systems is a plus. Its why i generally just keep the ps3 hooked up (for ps3, ps2 and ps1 games), 360 (for 360 and xbox) and wiiu (wiiu and wii).

I honestly dont see games as being old or new i just see them as being games. Many of which i have beaten numerous times and still play them. Others i have started and never finished.

Having the ability to play more games from previous generations on a newer system is a convenience that should not be scoffed at. I would not say its a selling point but a convenience that i certainly make use of.

The inflated importance given to exclusives is tiresome. The reality is that they make up a tiny percentage of the overall games market. And the number of exclusives that will appeal to any one gamer is even smaller still.

I played Uncharted 4 a few months ago and before that I would have to go back around a year to when Bloodborne released to find another exclusive I enjoyed on my PS4. Oh, I guess there was also Uncharted The Nathan Drake Collection about a half year before Uncharted 4, but those aren't really new games, as I played them all already on my PS3. (I just really enjoy the series and wanted the better framerates and enhanced graphics.) Now I have several more months of waiting until The Last Guardian releases.

This idea that either console is drowning in exclusives is just laughable. In reality, they are relatively few and far between. Especially if we are talking about the number that will appeal to any given gamer. Obviously nobody is going to magically love every exclusive that comes out any more than they would love every single multiplat.

Backward compatibility is something a lot of gamers want. The Wii U had it since day one, though missed out on third party support in general (which is why it floundered in sales). The Xbox one has support and it allows owners to go back and play their recent favorite games.

"But they have no games to play!" Pot calling kettle black? I always read comments on how people wish the PS4 and Vita were more backward compatibility friendly; why are you hyping up the Crash Bandicoot remake?

I'm sorry. You seem like you want us to take you seriously. But when you say what you did in reply to Brazz, you openly admit to being very selective with your list criteria....even going so far as to say that those are the only games you could remember(thus not really showing you care for PS games to begin with), and that you are unwilling to actually do any research on the topic before discussing it authoritatively.

In lieu of the fact that your selective process leaves out more than 90% of the exclusives coming to PS4 this year, it's not hard to see why so many others are calling you out for a biased viewpoint.

You didn't miss a few eastern games, you missed all but one of them.

No one here thinks that gamers only play the newest games available, but realistically, Xbox owners seem to be diehard in their assertion that every single X1 owner is all about the BC and awesome new titles coming out, when MS own statistics on the service seem to indicate it's not quite as utilized as is promoted on these forums. But to figure that out, one would have to extrapolate information, and look at things in a broader scope, and lately, Xbox fan boys seem to be going off the deep end in their misinformed assumption. I think MS broke them to be honest, as I've seen more levels of stupid with the Scorpio announcement than should ever be considered normal....but that's another topic.

Some people like playing older games, or are happy to go back and play a game they enjoyed in the past, or try out a game they never got a chance to play. I mean, that's obviously the case, because remasters tend to sell well also, and BC runs on the same principal, except that some people may already own the software.. But Sony wasn't wrong when they said it was a feature that very few people use. MS comments on the topic, if extrapolated among their user base, would indicate only a small percentage use it, or they don't use it very long when they do use it.

Anyhow, you are right, MS isn't removing games from production to support BC as far as I can tell. There is no reason to criticize them on that. But like with Scorpio news, it's not the groundbreaking feature that will make X1 the go to console. It's a nice feature to have and some people will use it. Take it for what it is, and leave it at that.

Sonys release schedule isn't perfect but they rarely ever do gaps like ms have become accustomed to. I remember that people on this very site were lauding exclusives earlier this gen and the premise of a better or comparable output to sonys... I remember people championing what phil spencer was saying when he pretty much acknowledged what many knew and others were trying to ignore ...

Despite all that, BC is a noteworthy feature that I wished I had the option to use but claiming its 'another knock' is a tad dramatic especially when you look at the achievements of the consoles in question and the actual plus points that have created such a difference in sales and perception.. . .real knocks

While it nice to be able to play older games on occasion most gamers prefer to play newer games and the odd old game for nostalgia reasons.

Since the PS4 does not have backwards compatibility and most people who purchased a PS4 knew that. So many PS3 owners who purchased a PS4 and still wanted to play their old PS3 or PS1 games kept their PS3. Some still kept their backwards compatible PS3 which will play PS2 games as well.

Yes, backwards compatibility is a nice feature but for most gamer's it is not essential.

You shouldn't base games on the opinion of others (most of the time anyway). Over at Neogaf; there's threads on how Uncharted 4 isn't as good as the second (Uncharted 2), yet it received overwhelming praise by critics. I personally thought Rise of the Tomb Raider was a better game because it focused more on gameplay instead of visuals (it's a great looking game nonetheless), which is something I prefer but maybe others don't.

Quantum Break; a new IP with good physics, abilities, and awesome gameplay - rated 77 over on metacritic.

Microsoft has been seen as "the bad guy" throughout the Xbox one's reveal - and now - they're correcting their mistakes. Having the choice to play Microsoft's exclusives on their gaming hardware or PC, is a very welcoming feature for gamers.

Problem with QB wasn't that the game play wasn't solid, its that it was extremely repetitive. There was only one way to approach any given situation, with the only difference being you could choose from a few powers to use before you kill your opponent. It replaced cover shooting with a unique shooter element, which was interesting, but after a while it just got old. I don't even recall many of the reviews saying the game play itself was bad, just that it didn't sustain itself throughout the game.

UC on the other hand, had multiple ways to approach any given fight sequence, and several ways to perform those approached within that section itself. It was also solid game play, and didn't get old, except maybe in some of the platforming sections, but that's part of what UC is, so it was overlooked more.

As far as ROTTR, its game play was really good. About as solid as one could expect. But I wouldn't call it extremely varied, and its mechanics worked just as well as UC did. You may have preferred ROTTR more, and in some ways, I did too, but I wouldn't call it better than UC4, when UC4 was more technically advanced, and rock solid from start to finish.

MS has been seen as the bad guy long before they ever made the first Xbox. They're correcting mistakes, but knowing MS, they will make more. It's just in their nature, and one only has to look outside the gaming front to be able to recognize it, and once recognized, you can see them doing many of the same things with the Xbox.

MS has a lot of great features on the Xbox. I won't deny that, and I have no problem with them making games on PC as well. What I don't really care for is this blind fanaticism which some Xbox fan boys use to express the impact or desire of the features in relation to the console itself.

And before anyone says it, I'm well aware that the other side can blindly discredit good things as well.

Looking forward to picking up my Xbox One s this year and playing Gears 4, Dead Rising 4, ReCore and Forza Horizon 3 this holiday.
EA Access has also been a huge plus as an Xbox One owner, getting Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, Need For Speed and Unravel. Also getting to play full games a week before anyone else. It's nice that Microsoft gives gamers options, and backwards compatibility is another great option. I'd not played Red Dead Redemption on Xbox 360, so it's a nice option, and having it on sale for $7.50 the week it goes on BC is a great treat!

Propaganda much? I've played and enjoyed UC4, Ratchet, Bloodborne, inFamous Second Son and First Light, Tearaway Unfolded, Kllzone Shadowfall, Until Dawn, LBP3, The Order, Resogun. I'll be buying Odin Sphere when it's on sale, Last Guardian in a couple months. Waiting for another Gravity Rush sale as I missed the last one.

Other people have enjoyed Driveclub and are probably looking forward to Gran Turismo Sport this fall. MLB the Show is quality whether you like it or not. Fighters like Guilty Gear & Street Fighter 5 are there for those fans, ya got indies like Salt&Sanctuary and The Witness. Dragon Quest Builders this fall will be a first for that game in the west. I could go on but you know...got games to play.

I'm extremely curious as to what is so great on Xbox, but somehow any number of games on the PS4 can't live up to the X1 games that are worth playing.

From what I've seen, and based on what I've played, I haven't seen that much that is "worth playing" on the X1 either. QB was the most interesting title they had, and that failed to live up to the hype. MS best exclusives are the smaller 2nd or 3rd party indie type exclusives they manage to get....and that's about it....at least going by some arbitrary standard of what's "worth playing".

Also hate to tell you this, but it's those anime games, and niche games which PS offers, which draw more people into the system, and that's why PS is such a strong brand and is beating Xbox....you know, because it has games that PEOPLE find worth playing. Yeah your not alone options are always welcomed but when the focus of your next gen console is being able to play last gen's games and not even on launch but as an after thought over 2 years after launch its hardly epic as its made out to be sure it's cool can pop your old discs in (used to be able to do this with Wii and Wii U, so it's nothing new) even PS3 let me play ps1/2 games. All of that was on launch tho and then they focused on all the upcoming future games not spent 2 years not long after launch worried about what old games to bring over all the while neglecting current gen games and forgotting that people bought a new console mainly for New games. Having the feature is great and all, but NS should really look at the situation they're in. These articles aren't helping MS save grace IMO. The only reason they're doing all this is because they're so far behind. Did they forget that Sony already did the whole bc before with the PS3? The feature is rarely used, and along with people not wanting to pay for it, is why it didn't last. Not sure how the games availability is a knock on PS4's lack of it. Seems it's forum goers and a couple websites that actually do the knocking to me.

Happy people that want to play the game have a means to do so. Would be nice if Sony offered something as well, but if they don't, then whatever, I'll can play 3 generations of games on my PS3 without any issue, and if it didn't have full BC, I wouldn't be that fussed about it.

I'm a regular purveyor of older(mostly retro) games, and I can say that between the PS4, Vita, and 3DS, I don't have enough time to play anywhere near the number of games I'm buying for them all....and even if PS4 was my only console, I'd be in the same position. Last thing I played on X1 was QB, and occassionally I try to muddle through the Halo:MCC campaigns to get up to speed, and I'll throw in Rare Replay once in a while. BC doesn't make up for a lack of new games to play, although X1 gets enough multi-plats that it could probably satisfy my new game needs if it came down to it.

Free backwards compatibility is never a bad thing. Sometimes I like to revisit a classic or a past game that I didn't get a chance to play. It's pretty cool that I don't have to break out the old console to play. Some games actually run better on the newer console like Red Dead Redemption and Black Ops. I wish my PS4 had bc. I could easily play Motostorm and the Resistance series. And no, I not talking about Playstation Now.

BC is convienant. It's a nice feature to have. it's worth hyping up good games regardless of how old they are.

Beyond that, the importance of BC to the console wars is more a bragging point, than a selling point. MS own numbers indicate that it's not overly utilized on their system no matter how you extrapolate it into a statistic, and the PS3 proved that people were more concerned about price and new games than playing old software.

PS1 digital on PS3 did quite well, but it was nowhere near what could be made off a new game release. Just some added revenue and a nice feature that the players could partake in.

At best, for those that are really into playing older games, it could be seen as a strong value added feature, but given how it's implemented, I wouldn't consider it a reason to buy the X1 even though I'm into playing older games often because it's a limited form of BC. I'd just buy a cheap 360 and be done with it if that's all I wanted, but since I have an X1, I'll utilize it from time to time when the mood strikes me.

In any given generation, I'll still be more prone to starting up a new game, and I go retro when I go through fads, or just want to knock out a game in my collections for whatever reason. Something that I can do on any number of consoles I own, or will use a BC solution if it's available.

Since it wasn't a console war talking point, everyone came to the conclusion that the lack of BC wasn't really that big of a deal. Yeah I remember those days when useless fanboys were defending the lack of BC because they just have to blindly defend these companies no matter what. Yeah, and it's a highly requested feature over at Sony's website too. But 3P up above is acting like it was only the Sony fans defending the lack of it's inclusion, while MS fans were making a fuss to get it since day one, when around here that is most definitely not the way it went. Both sides around here said it didn't matter, because they just wanted to play new games. The second MS announced it, is when it suddenly became important again.

My point isn't on the merits of either company and what they have to offer, rather that it is nowhere near as one sided as the original poster made it out to be, or how it is now.

I agree some gamers want to play games from the previous generations. I'm one of them. And I'm all for Sony implementing a BC solution, and even give credit to MS for finding a way to do it. When the mood strikes me, and the topic comes up over on the PS forums, I will participate and add my voice as one of the customers that wants it as well.

Since before this gen, when it was on neither console, I have been steadfast in saying it is a feature I would want, and at least for me, I would probably use it more than the average person who occasionally plays older games...but I'm also realistic enough to realize that it really isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things because the average person who wants to play older games, keeps the means to do so. I've also been steadfast in my commitment that it isn't really a system defining feature, and isn't that important to the average consumer, and that the people who act like it is, are being proven wrong by the sales of the systems themselves.

All that being said, should Sony offer some solution, I have no doubt that people will be praising it, and that Xbox fans will go and say how we said it wasn't important before, and the only thing that will change from when both sides didn't care is they will compare which one has the better BC solution....even if they are exactly the same.....such is the way all these types of things go whenever they happen.

As much as I would welcome proper backwards compatibility for PS4. It's not a feature I can't live without. A few months ago I bought a second hand slim PS3 for the price of a new game. Complete with controller. I can now play any PS3 game I wish to play.

A few days ago. I was so close to buying a Xbox 360 for £40 with 2 games complete with controller. If I had done that I could of played any Xbox 360 game I wanted. But I decided against is since I plan on buying a Xbox One S in a few months for 4K blu-ray. So can download some 360 titles and stream them to my PC.

We can all boost strengths and weaknesses on both sides at any given point. Many Xbox and PlayStation gamers always boost there consoles when the console is at its strength.

Here is my take on it. PlayStation had a weak holiday from August 2015 to January 2016. Xbox One had a strong holiday from August 2015 to December 2015. Sony ramped up the new year with titles but will fizzle out by second half on PS4 in preparation for VR. For those gamers not interested in VR you get Last Guardian and Gran Turismo(which may be made more for VR then PS4) so depending on how you look it at it PS4 is going to rely on Third party games like Battlefield, Final Fantasy, Call of Duty, Watchdogs 2, Titanfall 2 and Dishonered. Where as Microsoft Started off this year relying on Third party like Farcry Primal, Division, Doom, Overwatch, Battleborn and one triple AAA game while the second half is kicking into Gears with Recore, Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 and DeadRising 4. Overall, I see things from a neutral perspective both consoles provide gamers with a ton of games if you include indies. On Xbox standouts for 2016 first half of year are Oxenfree, Flame in Flood and Inside, on PS4, Alienation, Bruteforce and The Witness. Both have been and continue to be on equal footing with variety. On both sides gamers say they don't play certain games on each respective system. Due to preferences. Totally understood.

However, when I hear gamers downplaying BC and using lame excuses for example: Lack of games on Xbox One, or no new exclusives just comes off as bias and childish last I looked Inside came out a week ago, another game of the year contender for 2016.

I said this before and I guarantee I am going to get disagrees for saying this again, enjoy your system of choice and embrace pro positive gaming attitudes for both consoles and there respective offerings.

Once its all gone you will only be able to blame yourself.

Yeah nice try, but the general consensus is that that's nowhere close to fact. Sony has made their system extremely diverse in the types of AAA and indie games coming out and have come out.

I myself play on my PS4 more just because the exclusives come out all year, and give enough of a break for big name third-party franchises to release in the winter without straining gamer's wallets. I myself and holding out and waiting to see if COD4 will be released separately (hopefully with enough backlash from the community). I would hate to wait 9-10 months out of the year each year to play new games. No way is that justifiable in any way. BC is a great feature, but it's really to pick up for the lack of games all year long. But I guess some people don't mind paying $500+ for a machine that plays last gen games.

If anything it's a knock against the current line up of games for Xbox one, that dire that were relying on previous gen games, it's a great option and certainly a fantastic game but seriously you've all bought a new Xbox one just to play the games your 360 used to play? Sure gotta buy ps2 classics again but they are over 2 gens old some of those games haven't seen light of day since original release and if you were to buy original copies you'd be looking at a lot more than you can get digital copies for sure not every game but some of the rarer ones expensive as fook for legit copies. Dead Rising 4. Forza Horizon 3, ReCore, and Below are the others also releasing with Gears of War 4 this fall. Halo Wars 2 is set for February.
And yeah it's great to digitally own rare PS2 games but, in my opinion and personal preference, I prefer to physically own my games unless it is a game that can only be downloaded(for example, Velocity Ultra and 2X, Digimon on Vita at least, Resogun, D4, and Fatal Frame V). I'm still holding out God Eater will actually have a physical Vita release(which is why I haven't downloaded it yet) in the West but I highly doubt that's gonna happen.
And once again, I do not know any Xbox One owner complaining they get to play a few of their favorite 360 titles without any additional cost nor is it stopping them from playing current generation games. My friend and I are going through the Gears of War series again before 4 comes out and we both no longer have our 360s since our brothers took them years ago.
So I reiterate a third time; why are people knocking backwards compatibility?

I honestly haven't seen any of that(I don't go to hardware articles cause everything is just rumors right now since the specs for Neo aren't out and we don't know everything about Scorpio yet) but I see two reasons:

1: Sony fans bashed Xbox One for being underpowered and now that the rumored specs for Neo are weaker than Scorpio, Xbox fans are getting their revenge
2: Fanboys. Fanboys will bash anything that isn't associated with their system of choice. All three companies have their fanboys and they will rip on what isn't theirs.

But yeah, those are my opinions on why people may be knocking the Neo. For me, I have nothing to say on the two systems because there isn't much to go off of until we get official specs and pricing from the companies

Fair play I used to be physical all the way but with ps+ and the various sales (ps2 classics barely £6) full retail games from £10-25... Digital for me these days ill get on disc if there's a chance it's not very good or ill not go back to it once finished then I can sell it on for everything else ie the timeless classics, digital it's not going anywhere and it doesn't fill up my room as its at bursting point anyway and looks likes a stock cupboard from a local GAME store.
Also physical has annoyed me by the fact that you barely even get the box these days the manual has been ripped out and you basically get a disc in a case which if it's Nintendo they've even cut out parts of the plastic case to cut down? Always got spare paper for the health and safety guff but not a manual? I'd never buy a digital game day one for £59.99 when can buy a disc for £40 or less but digital this days it's hard to ignore when you can get some seriously top games for fractions of the price... I'll always love my collectors edition tho even if half of those these days are awful here's the game an artbook steelbook case and a free costume and gun for online yeah that'll be an extra £70-80? No!!

Backwards compatibility is a must in these times. In an age where most of our games exist in digital form. Selling a console and going to a new gen means losing entire collections. You can't even sell them. I have games on 360 and PS3 I haven't played in ages, but they're still mine and in my account. As time goes by MS and Sony will discontinue the 360 and PS3 consoles. They have to create a way that allows us to continue to play games we own in our accounts in current gen systems. So that our collections migrate from system to system as years go by. MS is doing the right thing. While Sony is being greedy and charging us by making us pay for the games all over again.

Yeah being a Wii U owner amongst many others I certainly won't be buying NX just to play Wii U games if it's even possible, that's why I've still got my Wii U, I buy the new console whatever it may be at the time because of whatever new launch games and games due not long after are coming not because it's just gonna let me play my old games, it is great when it's available day one tho as let's face it how often do we get a little drought for 6-12 months after a console launches.. Personally, despite my numerous replies to trolls and fan boys, I think it's more a testament to just how good RDR actually is. People are excited to be able to play it again, because for whatever reason I assume they don't have the means anymore, and any game that can generate that much excitement after 6 years(I believe) from it's initial release did something right. Plus, many people probably offloaded their copies, which is why the game had a sales spike after getting the BC treatment. While I'm sure some are new players who haven't missed the good things said, and want to experience it now, I'd imagine a lot of those purchases were people who no longer had the original game anymore, and were willing to rebuy it just to experience it again.

That's something that a lot of games never achieve, and it's worthy of praise that the devs made such a good game in the first place. Screw if it's bad for Sony arguments, that's just console war fodder, praise the game, and the devs for releasing the game in the first place.

Keep in mind a lot of gamers sold their 360 and PS3 consoles to buy the next gen consoles. That means they lost entire digital collections that they purchased. It's not like the old days where you sold a last gen console and your games and got money for it. No, You no longer have access to your digital collection. Unless they add backwards compatibility or want you to rebuy your old games on your new system. Which you shouldn't have to rebuy something you already bought from the same company if it's the exact same game. Every next gen console should preserve it's legacy and your collection by making every game you ever purchased digitally from that company playable on your newest console from that company for decades to come.

Quantum Break is exclusive to PC and Xbox. No Man's Sky is on PC and PS4, so it's not an exclusive. You're right, you don't need an Xbox to play Quantum Break, or Dead Rising, or Forza, or Gears, but PlayStation cannot play them, so it is exclusive, because PlayStation is excluded from the mix. Street Fighter V is on PS4 and PC, so it's not exclusive.

Unlike Xbox 360, the Cell processor makes it very difficult to impossible to do BC by software. The would need add Cell/RSX processors to ps4 for BC. So that means a more expensive PS4 SKU...

You missing the point the convenience of playing all your BC games on your current console is one of the many reasons BC rocks. Switching between consoles to play last gen games is really last gen. One of the things I like about the digital B/C is that you can save your games to the cloud on the XBox 360 and then download them to the XB1 and used that save file and not lose any of your progress. I did this with Torchlight and a few other games and it worked beautifully. The other positive is that you don't need to repurchase the game physically or digitally. Just insert the disc or re-download the game on the XB1 and away you go. I wish I could do this with my PS4. I have tons of digital games on my PS3 and lots of physical games I wouldn't mind playing on my PS4. I won't repurchase PS3 games I own just to play them on PS4. That's just dumb.

I'm definitely not knocking BC or RDR. BC is a fantastic feature IMO. I'm knocking the fact that as of TODAY you recently got your SECOND new game to play this year. How can you not think that is pathetic??

Plus you will shell out approx. 5-6 hundred bucks for a new scorpio, 1000-1500 for a new 4k tv (if you dont already have one), just continue to play RDR. It's the lack of productivity on MS part and the blind xbox fans that I am knocking.

Sony is not perfect by far. I would love BC on ps4. I would love a revamped OS with better game management. However, the sheer number of decent-good games is what makes up for all of the above. So, if you wanted to play RDR, or frankly any of a couple hundred last gen games, without investing in a gaming PC... you would have to buy an XBox One to do it. Sony fans are busy playing Uncharted, R&C, SFV, Alienation, The Witness, Firewatch, Salt n Sanctuary, Enter the Gungeon, Stories, Shadow of the Beast, Gravity Rush, Star Ocean ect. Plenty of exclusives already released this yr with plenty more still to come in 2016. No Man's Sky, Gravity Rush 2, GT Sport, Nioh, Abzu, DQ Builders ect.

Actually, PS Now has hundreds of games, if u own more than 10% of them i'd be surprised. So you are mainly paying for games you don't own. You also get to play as many games as you want with NO download or install, you can try 10 games in 20 min if you'd like. That is the appeal of PS Now, as well as being able to play games even without a console.

I don't get the hate towards BC. As though it's a bad thing or something. When the PS5 and XB2 come out, I sure as hell hope they both play my PS4 and XB1 games. I don't have the space to stock pile old consoles. And people keep talking about not wanting to play old games. What's with FF remake? UC remaser? TLOU remaster? Gears remaster? Halo Remaster? All these remaster tend to sell decently, which means there is a market for it. You don't have to like BC, but just move along then. BC day one is different than BC after 2 or 3 years into a console cycle. After 3 years there are plenty of new gen games to play and BC means very little. However, BC at launch would've meant a lot.

There's plenty of love for older games. Ask any of the people who bought into the above games. Hell, I still play through Zelda: A link to the past every now and then. My wife loves her some Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country. Needing fewer consoles around to play the classics is a plus in my book and many others regardless of when the feature arrives.

Sony has got to handle the backwards compatibility situation a lot better than they have. There is a better solution than trying to resale every PS2 and PS3 game previously purchased. The good news is moving forward (PS5, PS6) it should never be an issue again.

If they allowed the PS4 Neo to be compatible with all Playstation 1, 2, 3, and 4 games... I'd pay extra for it.

Xbox One has no new exclusives so they resort to playing last gen games. Most articles like these are paid by MS anyways. No one cares about Xbox One anymore, because the low hardware sales and ps4 3rd party games always outsell xbox one 3rd party games said so.

My point is that when people bought either the PS4 or the Xbox One or both, they did so not to play games they could already play on the PS3 and the 360 but to play new games - either new iterations of favourite franchises or new IPs altogether. Yes, having backwards compatibility is fine but you must agree that gamers, all of us, whether we like Playstation or Xbox would rather play new games, games which graphically take the most out of the new hardware and in terms of gameplay give us experiences we continue to enjoy each generation as well as new ones. This year we have had just one major AAA release in 7 months from Xbox. By comparison, we have had 6 major AAA releases for the PS4 so far as well as indies including games like 'Alienation'. You and I have had this discussion before on other articles where I have commented that since all games on the Xbox are also now available on the PC, there is no reason for those who have a PC to buy a Xbox, especially since the games will look better when played on a decent PC gaming rig. So then all the Xbox is now good for is a straight replacement for the 360 where you can play old games under BC. I, like many others, buy consoles for exclusives and games I can only play on the consoles foremost. I know I will not be able to play 'Bloodborne' or 'Uncharted 4' or the forthcoming 'God of War' or 'Spiderman'' anywhere else but on a Playstation console. Games I can play on the PC are purchased for the PC as I know that I will have the best visuals.

I hope this explains my comment. All Microsoft had to do from the outset to sell more Xboxes and make that console desirable is to have games that are only available on the console and nowhere else. The fact that you can play Xbox games on a PC does NOT make a Xbox One , Xbox One S or the Scorpio desirable, when all it takes is for me to pop in a new graphics card (or two or three) into any decent modern PC rig and it will run games far better than any console - even the proposed Scorpio which is still 18 months away.

I'm primarily a ps4 gamer. Getting a One S next month, but I keep seeing the notion that Xbox One will no longer have exclusives since it will share them with Windows 10 PC's. When you compare the list of PS exclusives with Xbone exlusives, a camp moves goalposts and say it is MS exclusive like Xbone exclusive never existed. The way backwards compatibility is implemented in the X1 is pretty poor, e.g. having to download a the full game you already have on disc and more data on top of that. It is basically non existent backwards compatibility if you are offline and if the online service is discontinued in the future which Microsoft have a track record of doing, backwards compatibility will be no more on X1.

Finally went back and played this in January on my PS3 along with many other games I've been meaning to play. Thank goodness I'm not eagerly hanging around waiting for BC support on such a thing or I will NEVER get around to playing some games too. How much money you want to bet 99% of these exited people have a 360 right next to their Xbone anyway?

Now onto the game. Still amazed how over-hyped this game is today. Played it back in 2010 and I got bored right around the time I got to Mexico in the story and met the legendary gunslinger guy from years previous. Never went back to the game until almost 6 years later, started it again. Still looks amazing today but THAT entire Mexico Act 2 section IS insanely boring. Can't believe I just happened to stop playing the game at that point back then. You go from one end of the map to the other constantly doing at least 15 story missions. And its a narrow long south section of the map too. I persevered and finally got to Blackwater though. The game gets better then. I got 100% completion in it and Undead Nightmare but never touched online in either at all, as usual in Rockstar Games.

But unanimous GOTY or greatest game of all time (lol)? No, just no. Its a great game alright but John Marston simply is not an interesting enough character. His voice when he is just shouting all his lines in the same monotone gets grating. No anger or sadness from him, just the same note the whole time. That Mexico part really slows the whole game down too.

The BC thing on Xbone is amazing. Its great and if they keep focused on it they will have all the significant games on it eventually. Its just a shame they lied back at the start of Xbone's life when they strangely said that a console built like a PC can't be emulated on another console built like PC. Turned out it could, they just wouldn't do it. But adding in another variable to put me off playing my catalogue is not something I would like either when my last console is sitting right next to my current one anyway (like just about everyone with an Xbone, don't try and deny it).

People keep talking about exclusives, but as far as my tastes go MS is doing well, they have turned around the ship, and since I buy all multiplats on the X1, 3rd party games might as well be exclusive.

I like many different games which is why I also own a Wiiu, as I like some of the Nintendo franchises, but between all three console makers, I prefer the OS, updates, Live, UI, and overall setup as the X1.

Speaking about exclusives, I am playing more X1 exclusives than PS4, not interested in the PC at all. The only PS4 exclusives I am playing are Uncharted 4 and R & C, and all those games announced at E3, mostly all of them are not coming out any time soon and the rest, not really interested in.

MS is a different company than Sony so anyone expecting them have more exclusives in the pipeline than Sony is crazy to begin.

I give MS credit, they have gone back to their roots, and very happy with them. MS just needs to keep doing what they are doing, let the haters continue to hate.

4 real. I see some people arguing that MS does remasters too whenever it comes up the BC is better than remasters. But really MS has done what... 3 remasters this gen?! Halo MC Collection, Gears, and state of decay. Everything else has been BC.

Sony has remastered just about everything. God of war 3, uncharted, last of us, heavy rain, beyond, gravity rush, ratchet and clank, Final fantasy 10, 12, 14 (square but ps4 exclusive), im sure theres even more im forgetting. The point is that BC is a great feature because this gen seems to be all about old games remastered anyway.

Sony is selling a 3rd party console with last gen 1st party remasters and a handful of new titles here and there and they're in the lead. That's not a good precedent to set as it shows that consumers are ok with companies not innovating and instead rehashing old titles with barely any effort.

Its crazy how this gen has played out because MS caught so much flak for being anti consumer but now its sony playing that role and people are giving them a pass.
