ThisGenGaming writes, "Possibly one of the most loved games from the last generation has been announced for a Backwards Compatibility release earlier this week.This adds Rockstar to the list of major developers who are releasing their most popular and heavily demanded games to the Xbox backwards compatibility catalogue, alongside 2K, Bethesda and Ubisoft to name a few."

BC is truly one of the best features for me especially since I sold my Xbox360

lxtrxi2839d ago

Hopefully Sony see how successful it is and scrap their PlayStation Now service for something similar - there's no comparable features that make PS Now even close to a competitor for BC.

NotAvailable2839d ago

Psnow is great, and since its a paid service I'm sure the money it makes is leagues beyond BC on xbone. Getting instant access to hundreds of games for $15 a month is fantastic.

Thatguy-3102839d ago

Ps now is not an alternative to BC. How can you guys not get that?

Kingthrash3602838d ago (Edited 2838d ago )

Xbox one has BC and ps4 doesn't.
Cool.
It's so over blown though. I think its sad that the best thing on xbo is 360 games. I wish xbo had a steady amount of xbo games instead of a steady amount of 360 games I beat long ago.
Don't get me wrong, I like it and it's a great feature ....but I'd rather play xbo games.....since that's rare I guess people are excited to play this very huge and long game again. I loved rdr...it's a classic, but fuck I beat it already...don't want to beat old games on my new, soon to be obsolete hardware.

ElementX2838d ago

I really don't think they can emulate very easily because PS3 had the Cell processor which was a different architecture.

Pancit_Canton2838d ago (Edited 2838d ago )

@lxtrxi

You truly are clueless on how the PSNOW works. It works on many devices like Smart TV, Blu-ray, Smartphone, Tablet and PC. It's not limited to PS3, PSVita and PS4. I think PlayStation are more unified than the Xbone and W10 could ever achieve.

ninsigma2838d ago (Edited 2838d ago )

Why scrap PSNow when it isn't any sort of BC?? It's not supposed to be BC. Think of it like this, MS are currently turning xbox into a service where their games are available on a common store between windows 10 and xbox branded devices. PSNow is also a service that is available across all PS devices starting from PS3 onwards as well as TVs and phones etc. I think it's about time people actually understand that.

Edit:
@commentator
Didn't know getting xbox games on pc was free....
Also didn't say anything about xb1 pc.

Liqu1d2838d ago

That's because PS Now isn't a competitor to BC, it's a cloud gaming service.

TheCommentator2838d ago

Ninsigma, why are you trying to compare a paid service like PS Now to TWO free services in XB1 BC and the unification of console, PC, phones, and tablets? It really doesn't work that well unless you were trying to make PS Now look that much worse, in which case I apologize for misunderstanding. PS Now is simply awful with its high priced rentals, missing game modes, bad compression, poor quality audio, lack of voice chat and innumerable other conscessions and omissions form the original game releases.

Aenea2838d ago

PS Now is not the same as BC, totally different market...

donthate2838d ago (Edited 2838d ago )

Pretty much, PS Now is pretty cr@ppy. There is a reason why it is pretty much rejected everywhere and nobody really uses it.

This BC though for XB1 is only going to get better with Xbox Scorpio next year so this is a huge win. I'm hoping for more games though!

Wouldn't surprise me if more people played BC games on XB1 than people actually using PS Now!

DialgaMarine2838d ago

PS Now is potentially the Netflix of gaming. No chance in hell Sony will ever scrap the concept. They're gonna let it grow until they can expand it to other platforms.

rainslacker2838d ago (Edited 2838d ago )

I don't think PSNow is trying to be a BC alternative, nor do I think Sony is trying to market or use it as such. PS2 classics I can see as such a thing, but that's pretty limited, and not even BC, but rather rereleasing emulated games.

PSNow is good for what it is. It works well for the most part, and is handy for those that want to use the service I imagine.

Beyond that, I wouldn't mind if Sony does do something to counter MS BC solution, even if it's done in the same way. Not sure they could do it for PS3 games due to the CELL, as the CELL is still extremely hard to emulate since it used specialized processes compared to the 360's RISC chip, but there is obviously no reason that PS2 emulation couldn't be offered(because it is through PS2 classics), and PS1 emulation should be perfectly capable on the CPU/GPU's that the PS4 uses, as less powerful PC's can do it fine with the OS overhead that Windows brings to the apps themselves.

@Notavaialble

I wouldn't discount how much money MS makes off it's BC solution. I'm sure they sell a lot of software from the 360 era when these games release. It's good for the publishers and the players because they have access. For the most part, I'd imagine most people that actually use the service do not own the original games anymore. Publishers are willing to let those that do play the game in the hopes of bringing in more revenue, which MS takes a cut on.

PSNow may bring in more revenue overall, although that's speculation, but I'm sure MS isn't upset with what they're making off their solution.

@donthate

What source do you have that people aren't using it? Most hardcore gamers don't seem that interested in it, but given that it seems to be cropping up everywhere on numerous devices, it's obviously being used by people who don't care what we have to say about it.

I can't speak on how they feel about it, but would Sony still be pushing the service, adding more games to the subscription service each month, and actively promoting it on their TV's as well as other devices if it was doing that poorly?

PSNow isn't for everyone. It's more for the people that don't own PS branded devices. But I know several people who subscribe to the service, and I've seen people using the app in demonstrations at the stores which sell such devices and seeming to like it just fine. It's available to PS owners to use if they so choose, but those PS devices are actually the place they aren't promoted as much, because it's primary target is a different market.

"Wouldn't surprise me if more people played BC games on XB1 than people actually using PS Now!"

It'd surprise me given how more publishers are offering up their games on PSNow than are offering up BC on the X1. Among our community here, I'd say more people probably are into the BC, but PSNow isn't really something I feel Sony is pushing to hard on the hardcore.

TheUndertaker852838d ago

The problem becomes if they do so how many "exclusive" features of remasters become redundant? Streaming, transferable saves, aspects of photos & video clips, then with Neo being around the corner up scaling?

Then games like the Uncharted Collection would be missing features the PS4 version doesn't have like multiplayer. Why would users then buy these remasters only to be missing features?

Aenea2838d ago

I think you're one of the few though, according to MS they logged 100 million hours of people playing BC titles across all X1 owners.

20 million X1 owners, hmm, that means every X1 owner played a whopping 5 hours! That is totally not that much and doesn't really show off how popular it is, in fact, to me it does the opposite.

Sure, not everyone uses it, say only half uses it? That's 10 hours per person that likes it. Ehmm, can't even finish a game in that time, so let's say you played 50 hours, that's only 10% of all X1 users, maybe 2 or 3 games. Hmm, still not that impressive...

sammarshall1022838d ago

100,000,000 hours played on BC games is great no matter how you look at it

kaizokuspy2838d ago

@sammershall it's not great when you consider those hours are spent on last gen titles due to not enough new content for current gen owners.

Aenea2837d ago

@kaizo
Nah, that's nonsense, the X1 has mostly the same games as the PS4, there's plenty new games to play

@sammarshall
It's an impressive looking number until you start to think about it, then it suddenly is not. But I do agree BC is great, wish I had it on my PS4, tho I don't think I would be using it much, still have my PS3 and that is collecting dust too, way too much stuff to play and more incoming rest of the year!

Misleading article title, makes it sound like R* was the FINAL publisher to allow this, which is not the case.

Clown_Syndr0me2838d ago

Has anyone got red dead multiplayer working? I've been loading free roam for 25 minutes..

mkis0072838d ago

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil1d 23h ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19921d 4h ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop18h ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom4h ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor1d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog22h ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit19h ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

So they eventually don't pay their workers and depend on our tips to pay them like the case with waiters!

Deeeeznuuuts1d 3h ago

That kind of practice is only normal in the states, as far as I know anyway, what a backwards system

H91d 2h ago

No it's as well in a every country that wants to amercanize

bloop1d ago

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum18h ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

Jin_Sakai1d 22h ago

Is this a joke? How about the big wigs giving up some of their pay for their hard working developers.

MrBaskerville1d 4h ago

Maybe the CEO could earn his money based on tips.

mastershredder1d 22h ago

good god. The devs are not baristas dude. Total 1% ideals. Fing Chadosaurus.
