sadly just like the console wars we also have brand warriors in the cpu field. amd driver support has gotten a lot better and i serioulsy doubt we will see a 4gb gtx 1060 for only $50 more and have 20% or more power than the rx 480.

There have been countless reports for new games having problems with AMD cards...they simply don't work together with game developers so closely.

I don't usually game on my PCs, but I've always had far more problems with Nvidia drivers than AMD. Back in the Vista era Nvidia drivers accounted for a huge percentage of BSOD and so played a major role in the poor perception of Vista.

And why are Nvidia drivers so slow to install? A few months ago I upgraded a machine from an AMD card to an Nvidia card and it took a couple of hours to install. I took that old AMD card and swapped it with an even older Nvidia card in another machine and it was done in 10 minutes. This was the most extreme case I've seen but it always seems to take far longer when installing Nvidia cards.

Keep in mind that those slides about performance will be some best case scenario (as it always is for these kinds of things). The 480 is a fantastic card, that will make good work of dx12 titles down the road.

Second, the price, as moldybread said. Still, I wouldn't be all that surprised if they come out with a card that is significantly faster for around the $200-$300 range.

I'll be testing out more games just to see the benchmarks and performance. I can't believe how powerful this GPU is. Tomb Raider can also run in 4K 60fps. TBH its almost at 70fps with the lastest drivers. I have the V-synch turned off. In 1440p TR goes over 100fps. Like a dream come true lol

Why are you cheering Nvidia when we don't even know the price yet.

From the specs of the GTX 1060 it has 6GB of GDDR5 compared to AMD's RX 480 which comes with 4GB GDDR5 for US$200 and 8GB GDDR5 for US$229. It is possible for the GTX 1060 to meet those prices but we don't really know yet.

I won't deny that even that there are some people who would pay well over $1000 for a powerful graphics card but the average graphics card buyer purchases one between US$100 and US$300 and that is the area where AMD's RX 480 give the best value for the dollar. If the GTX 1060 is within the $100 to $300 mark then it will most likely dominate graphics card sales.

TF comparisons only scale perfectly with cards sharing the same architecture. I'm willing to bet the 1060 will be faster in gaming despite it being slower in theoretical performance. This bargraph can be misleading, because it doesn't start at 0 the way one would expect, but rather it starts at 80% of the performance of the RX480 in order to paint a prettier picture for Nvidia's card.

970 does have 4GB's, just it's split into two. 3.5 GB's at full bandwidth and 0.5 at a reduced bandwidth. Which was something to get pissed about, but the card still performed very well.

You don't have to believe anything, but it's not hard to beat the RX480.

Remember Nvidia's cards are clocking past 2000mhz, using less power, and it's TFlop ratings, flop compared to flop is stronger than AMD's.

Finally, even though you didn't address it, 3GB's and 6GB's can compete against 4GB's and 8GB's, because of color compression.

I.E., you can fit more in a smaller space. There's a good chance that you can hold more in Nvidia's 3GB's than you can in AMD's 4 GB's, if not it's very, very close.

While AMD did up their color compression, Nvidia now has for two straight generations. For example, it's a definite that if you have a 4GB Kepler, a 3GB Pascal can hold more data.

Nonsense that Nvidia tFlops are more. Tflop is a Tflop the architecture and gimpworks benefited Nvidia on Dx11. Now Dx11 is ending and Dx12,Vulcan Open gl are posed to take over. Nvidia can't do HW Async Compute and gimpworks wont work for them in new api's. The new Api's are all built around Mantle which AMD created once vega hits Nvidia will be in serious trouble. I find it hard to swallow that after the constant release of all these graphic cards, the games are still the same. I mean do the developers ever even get to harness the power of the previous graphic cards before there's some new "super graphics card" on the market. 1. There are technological constraints at any given point in time that dictate what you can build.
2. There is no set specification that developers "need". Generally speaking, developers will use as much power as you give them.

You may not understand it, but people enjoy playing the same games with higher levels of graphical beauty and with smoother, more responsive framerates. And it takes more power to do so. Have you seen a graphically advanced game running at 4k resolution and with a smooth framerate? It looks incredible.

Oh, and the Batman Arkham Knight thing is overblown. The game started out with issues, particularly on certain setups, but the graphical issues were fixed in like a week and most of the performance issues were ironed out with later patches. Honestly, it runs great for me. I'd even go so far to say that it runs better than most other graphically standout titles like The Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed Unity, Rise of the Tomb Raider, etc. And it looks really impressive and definitely competes graphically with those other titles.

But since Nvidia holds the vast majority of the market, alot of people will pay the 10-50 premium to get a comparable card, that might indeed be more powerful as well.

Let's also realize that by the time the ti and titan's come out, the 1060 will be Nvidia's 5th fastest card in it's line. 4th fastest if they somehow skip a titan.

As you said, power and heat are a factor as well. You might 'save' money up front, but over the life of the card, such power usage will probably even things out in 2-3 years.

Finally there is also a potential issue where the RX480 is asking the motherboards to spit out too much power, which might cause problems. Perhaps massive, perhaps as little as hissing during games and such. Basically the RX480 is using too much power for a 6pin and the PCI-E port can supply. Though 3rd party vendors will fix that by utilizing a 8 pin, it also might be a reason some might stay or choose Nvidia. Especially if some reports come out that it's harming people's PC's. Probably not, but we'll see.

Not had a 7870 since 2013 my self. But it should be a big worth wile jump to a RX 480. The RX 480 can play something like the division at ultra settings at 1080p with 60FPS. Where the 7870 at the same resolution and settings would probably barely manage a average of 30fps.

A lot of the Nvidia cards can beat the RX 480 in terms of performance. That isnt the question, the question is does the 1060 beat the RX 480 in terms of performance to price. So how much is this card going to cost and is it worth it for the end user to give up 2 extra gbs? The biggest flaw in this card is that it is a 3gb/6gb card at a time when having a 8gb card is really the way to go.

GTA5 exceeds 4gb when you max everything out at just 1080p resolution. So really what we are looking at here is the performance to price for the the 1060 6gb versus the Rx 480 8gb cards. With the RX 480 8gb only being $39 more than the standard card there is no reason to not go with that. So what is the performance per price for the 1060 6gb going to be like versus the RX 480 8gb? When we have those comparison then we will know who is the king.

They may not be giving up 2GB's. Holding data isn't a 1:1 proposition. When the card stores information, it is compressed. Nvidia has better compression than AMD. Thus 3GB's is close to or perhaps even surpasses 4GB's in AMD, and same for 6GB's to 8 GB's.

For example, 4GB's in Maxwell > than 4GB's in Kepler, because they improved on the color compression. Now they did so again, so 3GB's in Pascal might be slightly less than 4GB's in Kepler, but more than 4GB's in Maxwell.

AMD did improve theirs as well THIS generation, but Nvidia has two generations in a row. Also, we have to wonder where the starting point was at to begin with.

So yes, you might be getting less GB's on the card, but you might be roughly equal +/- a bit in what it actually holds.

DX11 and DX12 games. Games aren't switching over in their entirety anytime soon. Maybe like 2020 or so.

At which point pretty much all of us will be on newer cards anyways.

Games will continue to have DX11 in every game, and increasingly as time goes on, games will have a DX12 mode.

There are many times a game in DX11 on an Nvidia card will beat a AMD card running DX12.

The other things we have to remember is that both AMD and Nvidia will release better drivers that will increase performance. AMD might up their game on DX11 a bit, and Nvidia might up their game on DX12 a bit. Either way, with the cards coming out, DX12 isn't a huge deal when you consider cards like the 1070 and 1080 are running triple digits even 200 FPS in some games at 1080p.

This is actually funny to me.

The GTX 1060 is practically a GTX 980, which is in the higher end of the ballpark range for the RX 480 performance wise.

The performance difference chart is laughable, considering they have the green bars far above the Red one for AMD card making it look like a huge win for NVIDIA, when in actuality the scale is only +50% max, and the NVIDIA cards are ahead 15% / 25% in standard and VR performance, nice gains Yes but the graph is marketing fluff like no other making it look like the 1060 is more than double the RX 480. Nor does it show DX11 vs DX12 performance.

The real cause for concern is the rumored 3GB / 6GB versions. 3GB just isn't enough for core gaming going forward, so they seriously need to drop that set-up and just do 4GB / 8GB, or 4GB / 6GB if they want to be stingy.

The last thing that needs to be announced is price. The 980 is still hovering around the $350+ range, and even the 970 is floating around the $250 range. My assumption is they're going for $250, in which case the RX 480 is still the better value for the price:performance, though NVIDIA fans would still have a great price:performance card in the mainstream market as well.

For now I'll be maxing out everything for the next 5 years. Obviously with 64GB ram and 4.6ghz processor overclock.

One minute it's xb1 vs ps4, then Scorpio vs Neo, then Wii u vs itself, now its nvidia vs amd. All's I can say is be glad for the competition cuz with out it gaming would suck.
