Pachter:Announcing Scorpio Was A Bold Move by Microsoft;NX & PS4 Neo Are Probably Coming in Mid 2017

Michael Pachter praised Microsoft's decision to announce Scorpio well ahead of Holiday 2017. He thinks both NX & PS4 Neo are launching in mid 2017.

Yeah makes sense, if Sony and Nintendo can launch mid year they'll get an advantage over Microsoft. Launch madness without console shortages and then the usual Holiday boost from parents gifting Christmas presents

KaiPow2860d ago

Investors might not see it the same way. If the NX still aims for a March 2017 release, that's only a short window to maximize launch sales and title attachment before the fiscal year ends. If Nintendo doesn't hit the mark on either, that's going to be another angry board room meeting. Sustained sales throughout FY17 aren't going to be noticed by shareholders as sad as that sounds.

SmielmaN2860d ago

Nintendo seems like a safe bet to launch first of the 3. Dif audience of gamers/parents. Might be to target NA kids getting out of school and asking for the new system to play! Lol.

Mr Pumblechook2860d ago

If Pachter says Neo launches in 2017, thenitwill launch in 2016!

UltimateMaster2860d ago

Do you honestly think that releasing the Scorpio will do Microsoft any good at a higher price?
We are talking about a World economy. When the PS4 and Xbox One originally launched, they were cheap globally because the US currency was very low.
It was on par with the Canadian dollar, so that means the 400$ system was 400$. Now the same console who is 350$ and 300$ in the US is around 450$ and 400$. Given how that PS VR is selling at 400$ USD and 550$ CD, I can only wonder what will be the price globally.
Again, if all of Microsoft's game are also going to be on PC, if you're already willing to go that high, you'll invest in a PC and Microsoft wins nothing on the Xbox side. You can't say: "Oh, there's a game on that console that I can't play anywhere else." and the opposite cannot be said of PC exclusives on Xbox One.
It will fail. Xbox fanboys were already saying that 1080p resolution didn't matter but suddenly 4k might matter? Everyone has a 1080p TV, not everyone has a 4k TV.
Plus, it won't play 4k games @60fps without lowering the graphics.
We're still not quite there yet for 4k gaming.

Overload2860d ago

It's funny people think Xbox is such a threat. They're not. It's a system with no exclusives that they have literally had to give away stuff to get people to even consider purchasing the system.

Sweendog0072860d ago

You have no idea what your talking about

Xbox is a brand - exclusive games are under that brand , if not let me play halo on a PlayStation 4

Grow up with your fan boy shit honestly

If Sony are that confident in sales , then why they brining out ps4 neo ? Both company's are doing the same thing , and both have exclusive games.

Overload2860d ago

The Xbox One has console exclusives and zero upcoming Xbox One exclusives. The PlayStation 4 has actual exclusives and console exclusives.

Stop trying to redefine a word.

BossBattle2860d ago (Edited 2860d ago )

Not all Xbox games are coming to PC. Phil said they'll decide which X1 games come to PC. For one reason or another they just won't release on both. But if a game releases on both X1 and PC just buy the X1 version and get the PC version free. Even then the X1 version may release months or over a year before releasing to PC.

dirkdady2860d ago (Edited 2860d ago )

Pretty sure the direction is to make all games available on pc so games are available across PC and Xbox one.

2860d ago
slate912860d ago (Edited 2860d ago )

The only people who think its a threat are those that are constantly downplaying it in any article they can find, such as yourself.

To other normal people, who are actual gamers, there is excitement. Unless of course mid-console upgrades make some reasonably nervous about the future, which is understandable. But if you fall into that category then you would probably be giving the same level of criticism to both ms and sony. Which you (overload) arent.

Overload2860d ago

Going forward, if you have an PS4 and PC, you literally don't need an Xbox One or Project Scorpio, unless they lied about Scorpio and it will have exclusives, which will still probably be available on PC.

thekhurg2860d ago

Agreed. It's a garbage brand and no threat to the industry other than the damage they do with having some consumers on a payment plan.

jessionpc2860d ago

Exactly. The brand had a good go for the first 2 generations, but now they've ruined Halo. What do they have left?

A racing game and Gears? Get real... Racing games are on every platform, and Gears is just a dudebro starship troopers clone. They destroy every good studio they touch, they created this nonsensical pay to play online feature, "Man, All those hundreds of millions and Halo 5 was STILL 3 hours!... WOOT! Love where that money went!"

Rip Conker, rip Lionhead, rip Banjo, rip Chief, and now rip dead rising exclusivity... Jeez, I could prob keep this rip meme going on for a few paragraphs...

MCTJim2860d ago

its also funny how much you hate anything MS related. Just looking at your comment and post history is shocking to say the least.

Bigpappy2860d ago

Exclusives? Seriously? You do realize it will be running most of the games, that will be on your system of choice, at a higher resolution and frame rate right? That's of course unless you are using a very capable PC. I only bought 3 exclusiveso for Xbox one since launch.

darthv722860d ago

"they have literally had to give away stuff to get people to even consider purchasing the system" man that takes me back to when Sony was offering up 7 bluray movies with the purchase of the PS3. Then again it is prob not the same as that was more about getting a winner in the HD war between HDDVD and Bluray.

darx2860d ago

Ugh...the exclusives argument means absoluly nothing! Exclusives do not matter this day and age, except on N4G. Enough with exclusives argument!

Overload2860d ago (Edited 2860d ago )

It's not surprising exclusives don't matter to a crowd that has none.

It's amusing. You guys try to redefine the word and when that doesn't work, you move on to other excuses.

darx2860d ago

Overload...ask yourself how many PS4's have sold. Now look into the top sellers on PS4 and note the exclusives sold vs multiplats. Now do the math. I am a PS4 owner and have yet play a PS exclusive.

XanderZane2860d ago

Games aren't on PS4 or Wii U. If you want them on PC you have to get Microsoft Win10 O/S and use their Window Store. Sounds pretty exclusive to me. You still will be paying Microsoft for them.

hiawa232860d ago

That is funny cause I am playing more Xbox console exclusives than my PS4 which I am currently only playing Uncharted 4 on.

starchild2860d ago

Microsoft has their games on Windows and Xbox, but that doesn't make them not exclusive. Those games can't be played on Nintendo or Sony consoles, which is what really matters in the console market.

I know a lot of you like to pretend you all own PCs, but any intelligent person can see right through that. Many of you turn around and attack or downplay the PC in other articles. Not only do many of you not own gaming PCs, but I would bet among the wider console user base outside of Internet forums the percentage is even lower.

starchild2860d ago

@Overload

You are the one trying to redefine the word "exclusive". Most people in the industry use the word correctly. Thus we see terms like "console exclusive", "Sony exclusive", "Microsoft exclusive", "Windows and Xbox One exclusive", etc.

"Exclusive" does not, as some misinformed people believe, mean that something is "available on only one platform". That is a misunderstanding --perhaps by those whose native language is not English, I don't know --but it is definitely erroneous.

The word "exclusive" simply defines and delineates a limitation of availability. An exclusive club, for example, does not refer to a club that only one person has access to, it simply means it is not open to everyone. (In that particular example it also carries the connotation of being expensive).

In essence the word helps us describe what is included and what is excluded. In fact, "exclusive" is an adjective which is related to the verb "to exclude".

Dictionary.com gives the following three principle definitions:

"adjective
1.
not admitting of something else; incompatible:

2.
omitting from consideration or account

3.
limited to the object or objects designated"

So, when someone says that a game is "exclusive to Windows 10 and Xbox consoles" they are in fact using the term correctly. It means that the game is only available on Windows 10 and Xbox and excludes all other platforms not listed.

Sunny_D2860d ago

Lol, people move the goalposts all the time. I guarantee this would not be happening if XBOX One wasn't tanking in sales. People are only on board with this MS exclusive crap because MS said so. LMAO, otherwise these same people wouldn't have argued much about SF5 console exclusivity.

2860d ago
Bruh2860d ago

It's clearly a threat as you seem to be so upset by it you needed to feel the need to say a comment on the matter LOL. None the less last time I checked both Xbox and PS have included a multitude of free games in their bundles and promotions. As for exclusives, yes the Xbox no longer has any, but it still possess a great amount of console exclusives and for a mass majority of consumers who game on console. They still won't be able to experience that library on the opposing system and thats inevitably what matters.

Take Sony's sack out of your mouth and maybe you'll think straight

JasonKCK2860d ago

It sure seems to be a threat too you Overload. With the amount of time you spend downplaying it. The death threats and hate speeches being tweeted at Xbox employees doesn't help your case.

Kingoftherodeo2860d ago

remember when ps3 gave you free online just to keep try to get people to play their system. now they requiere you to pay for it wonder why

_-EDMIX-_2860d ago

I can't see a more expensive Xbox doing any better in sales especially considering it's merely an upgrade to Xbox One it is not a brand new platform with its own games.

Of course a select few will buy the upgrades of Xbox and PlayStation but most will likely stick with the regular versions.

People really need to factor that when you look on PC the Enthusiast gpus are actually not the norm.

_-EDMIX-_2860d ago

@sweet - oh please buddy give it a rest please stop trying to spend that garbage around here the reality is Xbox is a console as hard as you're trying to desperately make it seem as if it's now suddenly something else it's not going to take away from Xbox One and Scorpio are consoles they do not have exclusives simply because there are no games that are only could be found on said platform.

If somebody sees me playing something like Mass Effect and they asked me if it's exclusive my response is not going to be its exclusive to Electronic Arts or origin lol

Most people when they're asking in regards to something being exclusive want to know, can it be found elsewhere? they do not want to know the ownership of the product it's completely irrelevant and makes no sense ask yourself when someone ask if Call of Duty is exclusive do you really think they're asking if Activision owns it?

Of course not that's not relevant to the consumer what they want to know is can I play this product on a platform own.

I do not own an Xbox, I own a PC and yes I could play those games on my PC therefore those games are not exclusive to one platform, I do not own an Xbox how do you explain that I could play all the latest titles on my PC?

Exclusive means only one multi-platform means multiple platforms ie more than one the other platforms that it's available on is actually completely irrelevant to the definition of multi-platform..

That's like saying Arkham Knight, Resident Evil Revelations 2, Metal Gear Solid 5 are not multi-platform because they're also not on the Wii U when did the term get based on not appearing on a specific platform?

I'm sorry that you're having trouble coping with this but it's purely objective the term means only one and multi-platform means more than one

It actually does not matter which of the other platforms it appears on for example Little Big Planet 3 is a multi-platform title it is on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 and I believe PlayStation Vita.

I'm not sure where this Mass hysteria and religious denial has come from Xbox consumers in coming to grips that Xbox as a console is no longer receiving exclusives. Microsoft is focusing on more than one platform maybe you guys need to seriously deal with that.

I once again do not own an Xbox one I have no plans to buy a Scorpio and I could play every last one of Microsoft's top exclusives that they're releasing on my PC...... that doesn't sound like exclusive to me buddy.

darx2859d ago

Bruce755 might want to check your facts. The PS4 is a quality system I do not buy consoles for exclusives. And as I said consoles do not sell hardware this day and age.

Ashlen2860d ago (Edited 2860d ago )

I don't know when Sony's Neo will release but they have little need to rush it out. PS4 sales are extremely strong with out even a price cut. I don't know if this is what they will do, but if I was them I would take advantage of Microsoft playing their hand early and plan accordingly. Either release as soon as possible or plan for an even more powerful console next year.

Bigpappy2860d ago

PS Neo is all about VR. So they want to release it with VR this year. I Don't think they want to release either mid year.

Ashlen2860d ago

PSVR doesn't need Neo to function. It has been shown constantly the past year running on the standard PS4. Delaying Neo doesn't mean they have to change the plans for PSVR. And nothing that has been said this far indicates there are any plans for Neo only games PSVR or otherwise.

seanpitt232860d ago (Edited 2860d ago )

Yes if the neo comes 2 or 3 months before the Scorpio I think more people will wait out and buy the Scorpio. Neo needs a big head start if the stats are to be true need at least 6 months releasing so close to the Scorpio and being so much underpowered wouldn't be wise.

starchild2860d ago

Well, the sooner the better for me. I'm anxious to play PS4 exclusives like Uncharted 4, Infamous Second Son, Bloodborne, The Last Guardian and Horizon with better framerates and maybe enhanced graphics too.

Also, the longer they wait to release Neo the longer they'll have to wait to release the PS5, because people will want to get a few good years of use out of their Neo purchase. I, and many other people, would be upset if they launch the PS5 only a year or two later. They need to give us at least another three years.

2860d ago
Scottyxboxoneandps42860d ago

@Ashlen
If they are to release next year, they definately need to make it more powerful than the rumored specs.
Alot of gamers this gen have latched on to ps4 because of the power difference to x1. The average joe has done the same because of hype around that power difference.
Question is, can sony do it? I doubt it but it will be interesting to see if gamers and the average person gravitate to the most powerful one again.

XanderZane2860d ago

@bruce755
Dude, you're clueless. Go take a walk around the block or something. PS4 Neo won't be equal or greater then the Scorpio unless Sony wants to scrap the NEO, lose millions and start from scratch again. Sony already said they want to release PS4 Neo this year. Hardware specs are already set in stone. The best they can do is overclock the CPU.

Nintendo said the NX is launching in MARCH, was nobody listening at all??? Was supposed to launch this holiday season but they don't want to rush it like they did with WiiU.

XanderZane2860d ago

I don't think anyone cares to be honest. I don't see anyone rushing out for an NX unless it's $199 or less and has at least 10-15 quality games from multiple publishers besides Nintendo.

xfiles20992860d ago

I never really trust Pachter I do think the PS4 NEO will come this year. But if some how it does not come this year Sony are working to match or beat the Scorpio specs that is my thinking. Only time will tell

DragonDDark2860d ago

So still a rumour. @Aenae

babadivad2860d ago

I'm guessing your a Fleetwood Mac fan judging by your spelling of "rumour". Well, either that or a Brit. . .

_-EDMIX-_2860d ago

@dragon- it has already been confirmed that it's releasing this year by Sony also you might as well confirm most of the other rumors regarding PlayStation 4.5 based on its existence being confirmed in the first place.

Meaning that the specs are likely true the comments that were made regarding the rumor are likely true and it's release date of October is likely true.

The rumor stated it wouldn't have any exclusives Sony has confirmed that it's an extension of this generation it is not the start of a brand new one.

Sony is basically slowly confirming everything we've already read about some of the rumors meaning that it releasing in October is very very likely at this state.

True, there's no reason for PSVR only vor PS4, you will get ps2-3 graphically speaking games, remember, they need to split the power of PS4 to display 2 screens at 1080p

MyDietEqualsGames2860d ago (Edited 2860d ago )

Not sure why people disagree. House already said it was coming this year. Just as, SolidGear3 stated.
@Below

Their message has been Crystal Clear since the very start of this console cycle. Sony haven't confirmed anything outside the existence of the console and that it would come this year. I'm dying for a spec rundown/reveal, tho.

In December it is, yes, until then only the ones with the bigger HDs will be released. At least that's the case in UK and probably EU as a whole, not sure about the US...

Tobsesan2860d ago

@Aenea

No, the 2 TB Version releases early August while the 500 GB releases late August

MyDietEqualsGames2860d ago (Edited 2860d ago )

Buying on impulse is rather dumb. Always look towards the future, especially if you can't afford every piece of hardware that comes out! If
I was tied to the Xbox brand, I would wait for scorpio and hang on to my Xbone vanilla, sell it before jumping to scorpio and be saving up. There is no need to have all the xbones released. It's stupid. I would sell my PS4 vanilla too if I didn't have a HD with P.T on it! For money to put towards the Neo.

In the end, it's your money, and if you're someone who collects these consoles, then, be my guest.

deafdani2860d ago

Holiday 2017 isn't around the corner.

Alexious2860d ago

Well, not really. If you don't plan to get a 4K TV any soon, there won't be any significant difference

kneon2860d ago

18 months is a long time. Like all electronics you should just buy what you need, when you need it. It you wait for the next big thing you'll always be waiting.

XanderZane2860d ago

Not buying an XBox One S, especially since the 2TB version is $399. I have a 4TB HDD attached to my current XB1. I'll just wait for the Scorpio at this point.

DragonbornZ2860d ago

Got a 2TB external in my X1 right now.
Will wait for a good trade in deal for the 500GB S model and just plug it in there.

DragonbornZ2860d ago

Lol people stop with this already.
Almost a year and a half away is not around the corner.

Flowingwind2860d ago

I have two 4K TVs. 50" Samsung SUHD with HDR and a 75" LG Super UltraHD with Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10. I already have a 5TB Xbox One (1TB internal, 4TB external), a 2TB PS4 and a 4K UltraHD Blu-ray player (only $399). I am waiting on the Project Scorpio Xbox One. Might move my 4K UltraHD Bluray player to the 50" Samsung SUHD when I get the Project Scorpio Xbox One.

kasino312859d ago

I think you are missing the point... it's about options that appeal to certain people. some people don't give a shit about the scorpio specs.....the price is what people care about. if you wanna save money and still play games, get the One s. If you want the powerful specs and great frame rates and aesthetics, get the scorpio...It's not stupid. they are catering to all markets.

I'm all for better hardware but stop talking to me,us(gamers)like we don't have clue.

Kalebninja2860d ago

Both microsoft and sony have stated they are not replacements for the current consoles they are for premium gamers and it's likely both will be north of $600 if they are actually aiming for 4K, the only replacement console coming next year is the NX.

DC7772860d ago

Well they ARE replacements but they can state that if they wish.

Alexious2860d ago

I don't think they'll be over $600. PS4 Neo with 4TFs could cost $450/500 at the most, with the basic PS4 getting a price cut.

Xbox Scorpio may cost $599, on the other hand, since it should be the most powerful.

kneon2860d ago

@DC777

They aren't discontinuing the production of the regular consoles so they aren't replacements

starchild2860d ago

You apparently ARE confused or misinformed. What you are saying goes against literally everything Sony or Microsoft has said and everything we have learned from the leaks. It also makes zero sense.

The platform holders are not going to invest all this money to bring these consoles to market only to release new next gen consoles a year or two later. They also aren't going to blatantly lie and mislead people into buying the base PS4 and XB1 with promises that they will play all the same games as the upgraded consoles only to turn around and say "haha we got you, suckers, Neo and Scorpio really are the next generation and they will be getting new games you can't play on your PS4s and XB1s!"

DEEBO2860d ago

You do know things change every day right.

It's doesn't have to stop playing the old games and it can run the new games better then the ps4/X1

It's like going the way of the pc really but still with fixed hardware.

_-EDMIX-_2860d ago

Both Microsoft and Sony have stated they're not releasing exclusives for these upgrades if they were brand new platforms they would have the market to justify them but that's actually not what's happening sorry but if you want to believe that theory you're fine too ,but it doesn't really make any sense and you don't even have anything to support such an idea
