I was happy with this E3. The analysis here asks if we should be happy with that kind of drop? Well I would like more. I would like E3 to be more about new games than Call of Duty 17, but the mix felt good this year.

Me too, but sounds just too unrealistic. Their is going to be a drop mid gen as most 3rd parties are making their new ips to have series throughout the gen, ie Watchdogs, The Division, Titanfall, Destiny etc. We'll of course see a bunch the start of the gen, then see those sequels later on. I'm not even sure it would be wise for some publishers to seek to start making new IP near the end of a gen as they won't even be able capitalize the concept for next gen, ie maybe its better to save it and have it as a next gen only title if it pushes the concept further.

@3Bn- Sony also doesn't make games for multiple platforms. They put in less money then a 3rd party might put into a game, thus are able to with much ease make new IP often. (That and a amazing list of first party developers)

Sony I wouldn't really say is the norm in regards to new IP, they easy stand above MOST publishers in regards to new IP output throughout a gen. Most seem to forget that God Of War 1 released in 2005, the same year XB360 released.

The Last Of Us released the same year PS4 was announced and released. They market their platforms for longevity and only prove such things with their actions. If this gen is anything to go by, owning a PS4 will come with great use, even up until PS5's announcement.

Now that is long term value folks lol.

'As much as the gaming community rallies around the big brands it has come to love, it’s in the development of new IP that gaming as an artistic endeavour has the most room to grow and capture new audiences."

This may be true, but you can also reinvent old IPs, like what happened with God of War. That way, it doesn't necessarily have to stifle creativity.

SlappingOysters2863d ago

Has it been reinvented. The story and setting feel so, but the gameplay looked like more of the same. I love God of War, but I expect the next game to play like God of War. Perhaps Halo Wars is a better example of mixing up a series.

Nyxus2863d ago

The gameplay looks pretty different to me, but of course there have to be similarities otherwise it might as well be a new IP.

Nitrowolf22863d ago

The gameplay looks far slower paced, which still looked great.

It doesn't necessarily look like a fast paced hack and slash.

Hoffmann2863d ago

The gameplay looked very different. It is not a fast action brawler/beat'em up anymore it seems.

I'm curious. Does new IP in this case mean it hasn't been released or hasn't been seen before?? What I mean is does the likes of horizon zero dawn and scalebound count as new IP in this case or are they excluded because we saw them last year??

poppinslops2863d ago (Edited 2863d ago )

The way I see it, the only games that should be counted are the ones that were announced at this year's E3 - aside from 'Death Stranding', which is currently nothing more than a trailer.

Worse still, the legitimately new IPs did nothing for me - 'Steep' looks like a less-fun Just Cause, 'Fe' looks like a poor-man's Ori and Days Gone might just be the least-original new AAA IP of the decade... those are literally the only 'new' games I can think of - unless you count those VR 'experiences'.

poppinslops2863d ago

'RegorL' has posted a link below, if you want to check it out... basically looks like a 3D Ori and the Blind Forest, except everything's blue and it looks like $#!t.

ninsigma2863d ago

To me it's like a cross between ori and tearaway. Looks interesting (some mechanics look quite cool) but unlikely it will match the masterpiece that is ori and the blind forest.

poppinslops2863d ago

Yeah, I may have been a little harsh in my assessment... I just wish devs would take more risks.

Something about recreating old school graphics in an era of HD high poly photo realism just hits a spot. I'm not nostalgic cause I mostly played GameCube and GB/A, but it's a visual style that gets over looked even by indies.
